It is most disappointing to get lunch and it not be correct. It is to the point where we feel this in intentional. I am not a native of Lansing but was told that Handy's has amazing food, so I decided to get it. The first time it was so spectacular that I went back and purchased another, only for it to be completely incorrect. The lady taking the order was rude, very unwelcoming and did not see to want to be bothered. I dismissed that thinking perhaps she was not having the greatest of days. Unfortunately, after having gone here 4 or more times with the order being, per the usual, INCORRECT, I have deduced that this is simply the way they do things, for us at least. Today, my burrito was ice cold. It is safe to say, while I am still residing here, that I have retired from supporting Handy's. My coworker mentioned that Handy's has the best chips and salsa in town so I had to give them a try. I do have a favorite red salsa in town already and Handy's red salsa was a little mild for me. I did love their spicy green salsa, though, and I now have a favorite salsa verde to add to my list! (It's made with a jalapeño base and has great flavor.) Let's preface by saying I'm Cuban (& I actually cook), in Lansing - 'nuf said. Now that that's out of the way let me tell you the guys there on Friday night were absolutely hilarious. I came for some true Hispanic food (not just MEXICAN) & got some comic relief, too. Bonus points! Handy's is an itty bitty Mexican market which is stocked with the following items which I pillaged on Friday: pasta de guayaba (guava paste), mojo criollo, naranja agria (sour orange juice?), Goya frozen tostones, mariquitas, fideos de sopa, vino seco, frijoles (beans), Jupiña, Iron Beer & even platanos verdes (green plaintains), to make homemade tostones if you are so inclined. There are two aisles LOADED with stuff everywhere so don't be disheartened by its size They carry all Goya products so they confessed that sometimes they have to wait for some items but in the event of that kind of emergency, I offered my mom's services in Miami. (She's become a pro at mailing me stuff & I've only been gone for a month.) Rest assured Hispanics in Lansing - Handy's is well-stocked & well-worth the trek to the market with the small parking lot but BIG offering inside ;) read more

The chips and Pico are the best in the city. I had a burrito today. It was phenomenal. I wish I ordered two. This is a family owned restaurant as far as I can tell. Old recipes from grandma type of place. It's well worth your time. Very friendly. I love this place. read more

A latin food market in the middle of ice country...awright its not ice country and I wouldnt call it a market (its about the size of a 2 bedroom apartment) but this makes me feel a little like Im back home in Miami. Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had has been in markets, but Handy's isn't among them. No soft corn tortillas, underwhelming nachos. I've heard good things about the breakfast burritos but I doubt I'll go back to try them. Lansing has too many great options to waste my time on the market equivalent of Taco Bell. read more

Best homemade chips and salsa EVER!!! It's a tiny shop, but they offer a lot of variety. As the name says it's a "handy" market.

A very small grocery store with a delicious deli. I love these tacos! And they have some excellent homemade salsa and chips! Their tacos and burritos are delicious, cheap, and quickly made! The store is very small and can get crowded easliy, but the food and service is so good, you don't notice it much! The groceries are a good deal, they have alot of bulk stuff. Definitely try them out. You'll go back, and back, and back again! Not just for the deli, but also for the grocery part of the store. read more

When I was introduced to Handy's over the summer by a good friend, I was a little disappointed that she hadn't introduced us sooner. I don't know who Handy is, or where Handy lives, but his/her chorizo burritos are pretty spankin' good. They aren't huge, and I think they cost like $2 each, but I will take a Handy's chorizo burrito with spicy sauce anytime over a taco bell burrito for half the price. read more

I went there last Saturday. It felt like going back to the Mom and Pop stores that I know from the South West. I've lived in both Los Angels County, Ca. (37 years) and Maricopa County, Az. (7 years.) Easiest and most accurate description "consistently the best Mexican food in the Lansing area" This place is and has been a gem find for decades and the best thing about them is nothing has changed. It was the best Mexican food and staples when I first walked in about two decades ago and they still are. The over all store is small but it is cram packed with everything you could possibly want including home made salsa, chorizo, tacos, enchiladas, pastries amongst other great food, and now I'm hungry. Everytime single time I go I load up. This place is a Lansing jewel, I wished they delivered, I'd have their food daily. There is a reason they receive 5 stars from everybody, they are the BEST in the Lansing area when it comes to authentic great tasting Mexican food. I'd read the great reviews about this place, and a Latina friend had recommended it, so I stopped by recently because I need a variety of dried chiles for a colorado sauce I was making. I was disappointed - they only had 1 or 2 pckgs of anchos & guajillos (staples for many Mexican dishes), their meat case was a freezer that only had tongue/lengua, they didn't even have Mexican oregano, many of the canned goods (Swanson broths) were covered in dust... I did take home a couple of burritos, which were quite good, and a container of red salsa (tasty but kind of bland) and chips (kind of greasy). I think I'll stick to ordering spices & peppers online. read more

I went to Handy's Food Market about 6 years ago on the recommendation of a family member who was living in the Lansing area at that time. I was told that Handy's was the place to get the very best chile powder for making chili con carne or Mexican food. I went there and bought several ounces of both chile powders. I took it home and stored it in my freezer. I used it in chili con carne. I don't make chili that often but when I do, I use only chile powder from Handy's. When I started getting low, I called Handy's and they mailed some to me. Now I am down to just a tiny bit of both again so it's time to go back to the market or order some online. It really is the very best chili powder. When I was a child, my mother would make enchiladas with Gebhardt Chile Powder. I don't know who makes the chile powder that Handy's carries, but it tastes better than the chile powder that I remember growing up and my mother was a fantastic cook. My sister-in-law now lives in Hawaii and I know that she misses being able to go over to Handy's for spices. I'm going to order enough chile powder so that I can send some to her. I have been in different Mexican or Hispanic markets in Grand Rapids but none of them carry the quality of chili powder that Handy's Food Market carries.
