My significant other and I love Mert's Specialty Meats! When we are looking for a specific cut or uncommon protein, we can usually find it here. They have both fresh and frozen meats, as well as some produce, spices, sauces, cheese, and more. Last time we stopped in, we got a pre-packaged and frozen Instant Pot meal that we just cooked up a couple weeks ago and it was excellent. They had tons of recipes to choose from and we can't wait to add a few to our freezer for the winter months! read more

In Ingham county, this is a 5 STAR. In comparison to the places I've been, its a solid 4. Mert's provides a quality butcher experience. With a large variety of fresh cuts (beef, pork, fish, etc.) it is definitely better than the local mega marts, and provides the one-on-one customer service that only a good butcher can provide. In addition to their fresh cuts, they have a large assortment of reasonably priced, shop-made sausages. So far every batch I've purchased has been great. They additionally have a decent selection of more obscure meats in their freezers (goat, beef bacon, etc.), marinades, and dips. However, it does have a smaller meat counter than Marindorf's, but I also think the quality is slightly better; and its closer to East Lansing too. read more

Unable to shop to pick out specialty food gifts, as they're restricting entry to one member of a family. While I completely support the safety measures being taken during COVID-19, after turning away one of the two adult members of my party, they immediately allowed two more shoppers into the store. If they want to restrict numbers, fine - but to be turned away because we're related? Nonsense. We immediately left and drove to Merindorf Meats, where we were very pleased with the staff, the store, the *appropriate* safety measures and the excellent product selection. Get this, first of all, I was ready to downgrade this place to 2 stars, cuz I went into the Michigan ave. location and of all things, they didn't have any ribeyes, Delmonicos, or tenderloin steaks for sale Weds. when I wanted a good steak. Then I went looking thru their extensive frozen meats. I came across a package of 4 vacuum sealed frozen burgers for about $10.00 called bacon and blue cheese ground chuck patties. I thawed one out, pan fried it on a super hot cast iron griddle, ate it with no cheese, condiments or bun, and it was perhaps the greatest thing I've ever eaten. I'm not joking. It was heaven on earth. Again, this review is based solely on that one item I bought from this store. But it was so damn good I am still marveling over the perfect blend of ingredients. I'm not creating hyperbole when I tell you that you need to go get some right now. These are the things cravings are made of. It truly is that good. We are new to the area and we're in search of a specialty meat shop. We headed to Mert's in hope of finding our new 'go to' meat shop we purchased two bone-in rib eye steaks and some of their brats with the butchers recommendation. Tonight we grilled our ribeyes. They were absolutely the worst we have ever had. No taste. Terrible. We're hesitating to try the brats. We won't be back. Still looking for a specialty meat shop-- we may need to make the drive back to Grand Rapids. Mert's was a waste of money. read more

Mert's has a good selection of meats and great service. Although it calls itself a specialty store and does carry some obscure cuts and organ meats, Mert's lacks a full selection of meats, offal and prepared dishes to warrant a true specialty shop designation. I'll start by saying that the service at Mert's is very good. You are always greeted with a hello when you enter and the people at the meat counter are very helpful. They ask questions about what you are planning to cook and offer suggestions to pair the proper cut to your dish. They really know their meats! The meat selection is pretty varied and stocked with the basic cuts. They do carry sweetbreads, duck, and tongue. These obscure cuts are all frozen and I try to avoid frozen meats at all times. I understand that they have to keep them frozen because they aren't high turn-over items. Besides, they don't carry tripe, beef tendon, beef knuckles, or pigs feet (all of which you can get from Meijer). I was very surprised they don't carry pork spare ribs. While they do have sausages, there aren't other prepared meats like terrine, pate, galantine, or salumi that I'm used to at other true specialty meat stores. However, the biggest issue I have with Mert's is the prices. I will always pay more for high quality and ethically raised meats. However, I can get the same products elsewhere much cheaper. For example, they sell Miller Poultry chicken thighs for $2.69 a pound. The exact same product at a market on the west side of Lansing sells it for $1.79. The same price disparity for pork shoulder between places is another example, but I am not sure where their pork is sourced. Go to Mert's if you like the meat counter experience and good service. Other than that, its pretty ordinary. read more

Mert's is...meh Given the lack of good specialty meat stores in the area (Merindorf's doesn't cut it in my book) I was excited to try Mert's. I have been half a dozen times over the past few months The quality of the meat itself ranges. I have had some pretty good cuts of meat from here. However, generally i have found the meat quality to be mediocre. Yesterday I purchased lamb loin chops. I purchased the same from Meijer the week before and I actually think the Meijer meat was better (sorry to say). As other reviewers have pointed out, Mert's tends to shine with prepared meats like burger patties or lamb kofta where they have added the extra ingredients and it is ready to cook. The customer service is inconsistent...sometimes it's incredible and sometimes it leaves a lot to be desired. As one might expect, the young people working behind the counter tend to be the most aloof and uninformed. I ask challenging meat questions (to which I already know the answer) to see if the people behind the counter know their stuff. They usually do not. To me, that's half the reason to buy at a specialty meat store and pay higher prices...for the expertise (the other half would be higher quality). Overall, I do like having Mert's as an option here, I do hope they thrive and I do recommend people try it out. Just don't expect the high level of service and meat quality you'd find at a specialty butcher in a bigger metropolitan area. On a positive note I saw yesterday they are expanding into the store front next store making a lot more room. Wonderful to see. With that said, when the East Lansing Whole Foods opens in 2015 I suspect the meat counter there will give Mert's a run for their money. read more

Please don't ever go here! Unbelievably poor customer service. I ordered a whole pork belly in order to make porchetta. Arrived to find the meat frozen and wrapped. Brought it home, thawed it out and realized it was cut in completely the wrong shape and would never work (despite having described what I was making while placing my order). Despite the hassle for me, I expected it would be a simple case of calling and explaining my situation in order to exchange the meat. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Called and explained myself. I let them know that there was no way to tell that the cut was completely wrong as it was folded onto itself and frozen solid when I got it. It had to be thawed completely in order to see just how awfully wrong it was. That made no difference. Sorry, you bought it! It's yours now. Unbelievable! Please, I'm begging you, drive the extra distance to Merindorff's. They had exactly what I wanted, FRESH, and wrapped it right in front of me so I knew exactly what I was getting. I guess my dogs will be getting a $35 piece of junk Mert's meat for dinner tonight. read more

Try the Bacon and Bleu cheese burgers - heaven on a bun! (if they don't have fresh ones, they will most likely be able to make some while you wait.) The lamb burgers are equally incredible. Before Mert's opened in town, Merindorf's was the nearest butcher shop--and it's not always convenient to add a 20 minute (one way) drive just to get something for dinner. I am so happy that Mert's has made a growing selection of quality meat easy to get in Okemos. They don't have HUGE selection, but they are always expanding their selection and adding new things. Today, we picked up "Hawaiian Linguisa" (Portugese Sausage). This was so surprising to me--I'm from Hawaii and I could never find it in Michigan. In fact, I once paid $$$ to have it shipped frozen from Hawaii. Now I can get it at Mert's. The customer service here is outstanding. The staff are always friendly and helpful. It is a little more pricey than the grocer store, but I will pay a dollar more to know that my meat is local and safe. I love to get ground chuck for burgers done medium, the whole free range chickens when they are on sale, and the flatiron steak. read more

If anyone remembers L&L Food centers in Okemos then you week of course know Mert. I have only been to the location on Grand River but have seen another one on Michigan Avenue. The meats here are the best quality that I have bought in the area. I personally go with the porterhouses as a favorite. The selection of other prepared meats and specialty products are other reasons why to stop in. This is a great family butcher shop and I hope that it will be around for a while! read more

First of all there are two locations, and the one in Lansing has a more limited selection; it's good for picking up some brats or steaks and the like, but the one in Okemos has a much larger selection. They have all the standard cuts you could want, lots of game meat, and off the top of my head the only stuff I've asked for that they didn't have were large natural sausage casings, pork blood, and whole skin-on tilapia. The stuff you won't find anywhere else like offal? They have at least three different kinds of sweetbreads, and I was sorely tempted today to pick up some rabbit kidneys just to see what I could make. As for the customer service, I don't know what others have experienced, but it's almost too good. I generally get asked what can they get for me before I've had a chance to look things over. Employees are more than happy to check the back and dig around in the freezer case when you're looking for things, and when I was making some pancetta Shirley herself told me that if I brought it in at the end of the day right before they broke the slicer down for cleaning that they'd be happy to slice it for me for free. read more

First of all let's just say that at 64 years of age I am a foodie that has cooked a fair share in my life and I know a piece of quality meat that has been properly butchered. I ordered a whole beef tenderloin several days ahead for a dinner party. For 30 years I had the pleasure of ordering from Dr. Beef at Goodrich's , which unfortunately has closed. I went to Mert's expecting the same quality and service and was extremely disappointed! my fault for not looking at the "so called tenderloin" before I left the shop. AND....any good shop should show you what you are purchasing before it is wrapped. what I found was the most sinew laced, riddled with connective tissue, still partially sheathed with silver skin, improperly tied piece of meat I have ever purchased. So back I went and beyond the disappointment of the meat I was horrified by the insulting, argumentative, manager. I have never in my life been so poorly treated by customer service. he was obviously looking for some kind of argument because he came storming out of the back room again to tell me I knew nothing about marbling and then stormed off. This was in a store full of Saturday morning customers. They did fully refund my money but they have lost my business. Maybe it was just the odd luck to get unsatisfactory product, but the level of customer service is inexcusable. read more

I have been coming to this butcher ever since they opened shop-they are always knowledgable, helpful, and the meat is wonderful. Whenever we have a holiday or family gathering, we always go to Merts to get the main course, and have never been disappointed in the taste and quality of the meat. And the twice baked potatoes! Wonderful. However, we will not be going back, and instead will be going to Merindorfs down the road.....or to the new butcher on Saginaw. The reason is simply unecessary money grabs. The first experience with this was the marinades. I don't know if anyone knows this, as I found out only after using their marinades for years.....when you order meat, I was always under the impression that the marinade was complementary. It is not. If you watch, they will put the marinade in the bag, and THEN weigh the meat. As a result, you are paying the same price for the marinade as you paid for the meat. If you are marinading a nice ribeye at $13.99/LB, then you are paying the same for the marinade. I only noticed this after I had bought two NY strips, and asked as an afterthought to add the marinade-and watched it add a full .5 lbs.....meaning I was going to pay $7 for about a cup of marinade. I called them on it, and the response I got was that "they can't give it away for free," which I wholeheartedly agree with. However, there is no attempt whatsoever to charge a reasonable, flat fee. What upsets me most is that this policy is nowhere to be found anywhere in the store.....it's almost as if they just hope no one asks and they can just take in the profit. It seems small, but if they are gouging you on something small like that, where else are they? The last straw came today. If you haven't tried it already, try their Ultimate Burger Blend. It is absolutely amazing. I went in to get 4 patties-and they had none in the freezer or fridge. They had plenty in the case, at $4.99/lb, which is a great price. So, I asked him to simply make me 4 patties. He obliged, and made then in about 30 seconds. When I went to pay, I noticed the price was now $5.99/lb. I asked why, and was told "for labor." They obviously disagree with me, but I think that is ridiculous. They have lost my business. I may not be important to them, but I am disheartened that a "community based" business would engage in acts that would take more money from community members than they need to. read more

Only been to Mert's a couple times. Bought lamb chops for Valentine's Day and absolutely enjoyed them. And bought brats today for a pool party. Loved them and the service. The boys were delightful. I had been looking for hanger steaks for the past week because I was having a dinner party, and I was so relieved to hear the woman on the phone inform me that the meat counter had trimmed hanger steaks for $8.99 per pound. The particular cut of meat is difficult to find because many butcher shops simply don't offer it for sale, or it gets discarded after slaughter because it is easily damaged. It also doesn't help that there are only 2 steaks per steer. You can imagine my excitement when I got off the phone with Mert's. I drove 40 minutes to Okemos from my home in Brighton later that day. I got up to the meat counter and I definitely saw the cuts of meat in front of the hanger steak tag, however, they were certainly not true anger steaks. The cut of meat labeled a such was in fact a sirloin tri-tip. When I asked one of the gentlemen behind the counter if they had any hanger steaks in the store or just the mislabeled tri-tips, he politely told me that he would go and get the actual butcher for me to speak to. I didn't catch this butcher's name, but when I asked him if he had any real hanger steaks he insisted that the cut of meat I was looking at was in fact a real hanger steak because it came from the top sirloin of the cow. I'm no butcher, but I am a well-seasoned cook and have cooked my share of meats, beef and otherwise. I have cooked hanger steaks before as well as tri-tips. A hanger steak is a cut of meat attached to the last rib of the cow near the kidneys, from the plate. It is near the area where the skirt steak is cut from. A tri-tip (which this butcher was trying to turn over to me as a hanger) is from the sirloin, which is located in the loin of the cow. I realize that mislabeling or naming these cuts incorrectly is common, but it was clear that this butcher was aware of the mistake and refused to acknowledge it, assuming I wouldn't know any better and take his word for it. In fact, before heading to Mert's, I stopped in Merindorf and was told that they did not have any true hanger steaks, but they could sell me a skirt, flank, or flap instead which IS similar in texture and flavor. Had the Mert's butcher done the same, I probably would have given them a much higher rating. Their meats looked fresh and they had a decent selection and reasonable prices. Needless to say, I did not purchase anything from Mert's, but I received pleasant service over the phone as well as from the meat counter retail staff. However, the fact that one of their butchers lied to me, assuming I wouldn't know better, left a horrible impression and I likely won't be returning. Be sure you know what you are buying before you buy from Mert's. read more
