Erik Bradford was referred to me by another attorney that wasn't able to take my case. When I contacted him he was very calm and collected. He reassured me and told me the process. I had an initial consultation with him that was about an hour long because I had so many questions!! He gave me all of his attention and gave me very clear answers with reasonable expectations. I will start by saying that Mr. Hanson and his paralegal Monica are great, but unfortunately the billing department is another issue. Randy is very rude, when questioned why I am getting billed after receiving a random call from her after months of not having any updates on my case she was very disrespectful, she accused me of being difficult and refusing to pay every time she called, which is not the case. She told me I was wasting her time, and that she was so frustrated with me because I keep refusing to pay, pay for services I have not received. I had to closed my case because of her poor costumer services and accusations. I hope the attorneys know why they lost a client today. I've been asked by a handful of people if I would recommend this law firm and I always say no and tell them the name so they can avoid being taken advantage of. I recently parted ways with them due to always having to check in for updates, being overcharged, dragging the case on. My case had to be rescheduled due to their negligence (not filing a substitution timely) as well as finding out recently that they never filed any documents to finalize the court orders after the hearing. So I'm now taking care of finalizing orders with family court assistance 4 1/2 months after the hearing I was represented by them. Just finished a case with this law firm recently for a case I believe was simple. I already had the divorce but needed to modify custody orders and redo child support (he was unemployed when we went through the divorce and now he is working). I was charged 2k plus for the retainer and ended up paying over 2k in additional fees. I do think the billing was ridiculous for calls, fax and other misc things they charged me for. As far as the results, they were okay. I didn't get everything I asked for with the modification but the lawyer who showed up for me in court seem confident and knew what he was doing. He was nice and very professional. Would I recommend this firm, I would say no. When they went through my retainer and we had not even went to court yet I was upset and wanted to fire them. I thought about it and was like court is close it can't be that much more money. Like I said I paid another 2k with okay results. I never seen a practice charge those ridiculous prices for administration fees. Interaction with the law firm was always pleasant. You will pretty much talk/email to the legal assistance the whole time. Be careful with your email correspondence they charge for that. I would suggest finding a better firm that doesn't go crazy on administrative fees. read more

Where do I start! this firm is a joke not only did they over charge me for a simple custody case but they had attitudes on top of all of that. I wouldn't recommend these people to my worst enemy. When I first started with them it went ok untill we got closer to my court date. they switched lawyers with me two days before the hearing. When we got to roll cal they called my child's mothers name and my lawyer spoke up and said she was there to represent her. then after she realized she made a mistake she inerupted the roll call and told them she messed up and was there to represent me. never The less my case got called and the lawyer totally blew it and started making the judge upset. by the end of it the judge just went by what the mediator recommended and I got totally screwed. and because of there lack of being professionals I didn't get to spend time with my 1 year old son on Father's Day nor his birthday. Then after all that they slap me with a 4 thousand dollar bill not to mention the 2500 dollar retainer fee plus all the other little fees they added up for a simple 2 minute phone call here and there. I've been with this office for over a year and recently fired them. I initially hired this firm for a post divorce judgment issue. Initially I was very impressed by their effort and communication but as months went by, my trust and confidence in the ability of this firm quickly declined. I can honestly say that this firm made absolutely ZERO progress on my case. I spent nearly $15,000 into this firm with nothing to show for it. My representation at this firm could not even get my case to court, which was very frustrating. For months, this firm and the opposing council negotiated for a reasonable settlement but every time they negotiated we came up with no results. My ex wife and her council are very adamant on racking up fees for me and are not interested in coming to a reasonable settlement so the only way for me to be finished with this headache of a legal battle would be to present my case before a judge, which this law firm was never able to get to that point, even after over a year! This law firm was not aggressive and does not think outside the box. Recently I hired a new firm and the attorney I spoke with was able to come up with a simple yet logical solution to my case and had ideas that this firm never even thought of. Over all I feel very let down by this law firm. The last couple months I was with them, I felt a very negative attitude towards me from the attorney and the paralegal. I never got any reassurance that my case was being worked on. It felt as if my case just got put on the back burner and forgotten about but yet I'm still throwing money down the drain for them. Reading into my billing statements and seeing what I was being charged for I can definitely say this firm has some unethical billing issues. Some charges I saw were for absolutely outrageous things like $75 to send a fax or make a phone call. I'm an active duty Force Recon Marine and I am constantly out of the state on orders for long periods of time. I am also remarried with two kids and I trusted this firm to look after me while I was gone and I counted on them to come to a solution so I can move on and support my new family but instead I feel like they just racked up my bill and made no effort to help me. I've had quite a few attorneys in this town for two different custody cases. The first I dropped after I was charged over $4k in one month without a shred of work to show for the charges (not even a response), another I left when I switched over to HGBH and she told me in a phone call that Shaun Hanson is the only attorney in this town she didn't mind losing a client to. Shaun took on my move away case with the utmost confidence that it would be granted and I am so thankful for all the hard work he and his team put into my case. We were in H2 with Judge Warren and for starters I have to say, when you see a judge happy to have your attorney in the courtroom you know you made the right decision. Shaun represented me at two court dates and then Erik Bradford carried my case through four very long days of trial. Both men were prepared and kept the entire case simple. They did not prolong the process the way my ex-husband's attorney tried to. They simply worked based on the case law regarding move aways and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that it made it all that much easier for the judge to grant it. Monica worked as the paralegal on my case and she was incredibly responsive and always on top of the documentation/paperwork in both a timely and efficient manner. She was always receptive to my phone calls and treated me like a human. She never overbilled nor billed the way I saw other paralegals bill in this town. I have recommended HGBH to friends, family, and even strangers. If I could put this entire law office in my pocket and take them with me to OK when we move, I would. I would like to say you get what you pay for but like I mentioned above, I have paid a sickening amount of money for "reviewing case file", "updating case file", etc with nothing to show for it. Do your research, go in for a consultation, feel the vibes in the office. From the first day I stepped into the office at HGBH I could feel the integrity of the entire staff and it was evident that they are passionate about their clients needs. The paralegal is terrible, incompetent, slow and not very nice. And believe me this matters when 90% of your billing is because of her. She landed here after feeling frustrated and taken advantage of financially by other local firms. I had a phone consult with Shaun Hanson regarding adoption vs legal name change for a minor. I was given excellent, valuable advice and pointed in a direction to attempt on own without legal counsel. Obviously a huge financial savings. I was told that he would be happy to step in should I need him at any time. My experience with Hanson Gorian & Bradford was the polar opposite of Tiffany. I was referred to Erik Bradford and went in cautiously, having had a bad experience with another family lawyer which cost me $16,000 and my faith in the system. Erik was courteous, efficient and a straight talker. He informed me the best ways for me to save costs by utilizing his paralegals and e-mails for communication which understandably billed a lower rate. He cut to the chase of the matter and clearly informed me of what I could realistically expect and not expect to achieve. He did not simply tell me what I wanted to hear to run up a bill. He was so concise and expeditious about refuting the claims of the lawyer of my ex-husband, my ex-husband actually agreed to meet and have Erik write up a settlement agreement! You would have to know my ex-husband to appreciate what an incredible feat this was to accomplish. Erik stayed late and calmly walked through the matters of contention with my ex explaining simply and under no uncertain terms what the court would deem fair and just to both parties. In an hour and a half, we came to terms and signed a settlement alleviating us from a costly hearing the next day. What 2 other lawyers couldn't accomplish in 3 and a half years and $40,000, Erik accomplished within approximately 6 weeks and less than $4500. I don't hand out praise lightly: it must be earned. Erik earned it and then some. He restored my faith in lawyers...at least this one! read more

Horrible Attorneys! They did nothing I asked them to do for my daughter and grandson!! It wasn't about the money it was having them represent my daughter. I wanted them to be her voice. She was very intimated and verbally abused by her sons father. I knew when it came to court she would not be able stand up against him to. So therefore we hired them. When I first had my consultation with Shaun, I felt good about him handling my custody paperwork. I didn't know what was going to happen and or what was to be expected later when my restraining order was over with my son's father. I have a problem more with his paralegal than I do with him. Every time I wanted advice from Shaun and or a question answered, either I don't get it, or when I do get an answer it isn't exactly all that I asked and simple and definitely vague. She is not very helpful or thorough when it comes to getting questions answered from Shaun. I hired an attorney to help me and to help give me direction as to the best possible options based on the situations and never got it!! I hope I will never need an attorney again, but I wouldn't go back. I did feel Shaun rushed conversations because of $$ which I appreciate as I didn't have the money to spend, but it discouraged me from detailing information that may have helped and to get to a legal professional perspective on what options could of been done or how to handle it. But the main problem was certainly the paralegal. I am ready to sign paperwork, get my bill paid and be done with this office. I had high hopes based on my first conversation with Shaun, but I feel his paralegal doesn't do him justice. I think spending $7,000 on a divorce attorney and then ending up doing it myself warrants a 1 star rating. I had gotten their number from a co-worker who went through a divorce and when I met with them, they said this would take 2 weeks since my ex and I were amicable and arrived at our own agreement. Maybe because this wasn't a high profile Rancho Santa Fe divorce it didn't hold their attention, but I expected better service for $220 / hour. They dragged their feet filing and only followed up with me once during the process to let me know what was going on. The last straw was when I got the Marriage Settlement Agreement that they put together and it was rife with errors. There were so many mistakes, there was more red than black on those pages. I ended up going to Barnes and Noble and buying "How To Do Your Own Divorce In California in 2009: Everything You Need for an Uncontested Divorce of a Marriage or Domestic Partnership" By Ed Sherman (now in its 33rd edition) and I DID IT MYSELF for $30 bucks. Well, that plus the $7,000 that I flushed down the toilet with them. And lawyers wonder why the profession is so reviled. Save your time and money and go buy the book - IF you can both agree on terms. Otherwise, I guess you'll have to walk the gauntlet of trying out lawyer after lawyer that won't screw you for billable hours. read more

If I could rate "0" stars for this law firm, I would. I hired Mr. Hanson and his firm to represent me in what should've been a cut and dry custody case. I had previously had 80%+ custody of my son, when his father moved back to the area and decided he now wanted 50/50 (i'm sure to avoid paying child support). I stressed to the courts that this was a challenge for my son (who was only a toddler) to go from living primarily with me to now being shuffled house-to-house every 3 days. Mr. Hanson assured me that he agreed this situation was not suitable, and that we could contest the mediator's recommendation in court. I guess what he meant by contest was that I could roll over and submit to the judge when it actually came time to go in front of the judge -because that's exactly what Mr. Hanson did. When the judge (who was new to the family law bench) stated that he was following the mediator's recommendation (the same mediator that has several grievances and complaints filed against him), Mr. Hanson didn't make a peep. Just asked that a "90 day review" of this arrangement be made. But as anyone in law will tell you - once a court makes a ruling, they hardly ever go back on it without damaging evidence. So here were are 6 months later, $6k later, and my ex has 50/50 of our son. And my son is now regressing in his behavior and can't understand why he's split between two homes all of a sudden. Thanks, Shaun. Meanwhile, while the 90 day trial period was underway, my ex submitted a declaration to the court accusing me of abuse, racism, and a bunch of other unreasonable things (he was grasping at straws,) and the paralegal from this office calls me to "discuss" them - I put discuss in quotations because what I really mean is that SHE continued to accuse ME, and took my ex's words as truth rather than asking me my side of the story. I was 39 weeks pregnant and she basically told me, "well you've lost the case now just so you know. we should just call opposing counsel now and agree to 50/50" I'm sorry - but who am I paying you to represent? I was hysterical and emotional and could not believe she approached me in that way. I was so shaken up because I knew what the truth was! And here she was taking my exhusbands side. While was paying her $200+ an hour to read the court documents. I show up to court only to find out that Mr. Hanson had had supposedly had some kind of motorcycle accident and wouldn't be there to represent me at the hearing that day - his partner, Mr. Bradford would. Mr Bradford showed up 90 minutes late and basically took advantage of my pregnant emotional state and told me not to go in front of the judge - to agree to the 50/50 arrangement and be done with it. I told him I would keep the current arrangement (which was technically I had 57% or something random,) if the schedule of the visits could be changed - instead of 3 days on 3 days off, could the schedule be one week on one week off. Mr Bradford said sure! No problem! Come to find out, this made the custodial timeshare an even 50/50 percentage, meaning I lost primary custodianship of my child. And now to enroll him in school next year, I will have to pay the courts (and another attorney) for a 730 custodial evaluation, which is upwards of $10k. The representation of this firm is horrific - they look at you as a number, an invoice, a payment - they don't take the time to get to know your case or your end goal. Their end goal is just getting paid. Period. I spoke two Mr. Hanson TWICE between October and May - once at our consult in October, once at the hearing in November - and never again. All of that for over $6k in work. On top of that, the child support was revised based on the 50% arrangement. Shaun and his paralegals could not figure out how to read my ex husband's LES (military pay stub,) or my disability pay stub (I am since remarried and now on maternity leave from my job). It took me pointing out errors to THEM to get the revisions and the numbers corrected. Three drafts of child support numbers had to be made before they could figure it out -- oh and don't worry, they charged me for all 3 revisions. Even the time spent correcting THEIR errors. I received an email from the paralegal yesterday saying I had 10 days to pick up my file since they had "removed themselves from the case," and if I didn't pick up the file within 10 days, the file would be shredded. I picked up the file today - barely a binder-full of information. And when I got home? A $450 bill was waiting for me in the mail - charging me for the letter they wrote to me saying they were withdrawing as representation on this case as it is their "procedure," charging me for preparing my final file - and then charging me for things I paid for on my LAST invoice. I don't think so. I am no better off in my custodial case with this law firm than I was when I started over 6 months ago. Please please please heed my advice and stay AWAY from this law firm!! read more

Very disappointing experience. Shaun seemed very professional, but the initial consult was the only time I spoke with him. The rest of the time my case was handled poorly by his paralegal... I felt like their last priority, as I was charged for checking on my case after not being updated for over a month, and at which time I was told nothing had been done on my case. I even had to draft my own proposal... perhaps I just expected too much by thinking my lawyer would help me determine what was a fair request.
