Just going to Hapa is a party. We have two faves in town for sushi and Japanese specialties and they each have their own twist on the menu. It's sort of like having to kids with the same heritage but they are not exactly the same but neither is better than the other, they are just different. Tonight we needed a fish fix to get healthy Vitanin D for me and good clean protein for my husband. With veggies of course an a tasty dessert, I'm partial to sashimi and had some tender large pieces of very fresh hamachi. My husband also likes crab and crispy so he had the spider roll. We shared some happy hour specials, salmon avocado roll and yellowtail scallion. We started with the warm "magic mushrooms" which is named for its appearance but is actually salmon wrapped around a core of avocado and grill and garnished with a nice soy based drizzle and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Nice on a chilly evening with snow still melting across town. Since he had a few leftovers to serve as his lunch tomorrow, I ordered the salmon skin roll to go. Since it is not raw salmon it holds up beautifully overnite in the fridge. When home alone, it's my go to takeout item. The staff is impeccable and the seating pretty and comfortable. No longer a fan despite being a frequent customer. We sat at the long sushi counter today at about 11:30am, and unfortunately, it was disgustingly dirty. Along the entire metal section just above the eating counter, there appeared to be old rice and other food debris that looked as though it may have been left from the previous night. There were also food and/or soy sauce splatters along the wooden baseboard in the same area. To make matters worse, there was a noticeable accumulation of dust around three large sake bottles displayed in the corner. My photo unfortunately does not clearly show the extent of the filth. I asked our very nice waitress if the cleaning crew had been absent. She apologized and promptly began cleaning the counter herself, which I appreciated. However, that should never have been necessary. Someone should have cleaned these areas either at the end of the previous evening or before the restaurant opened. I also noticed staff cutting mounds of cucumbers with bare hands. To me not acceptable. Where was the management oversight? For a restaurant where customers are eating raw fish and other food prepared in front of them, cleanliness should be an absolute priority. We will not be returning. It was my second time visiting Pearl Street in Boulder when my husband and I had lunch at this location, and I must say that I quite enjoyed the food and dining experience. We were visiting my husband's alma mater (University of Colorado, Boulder) when we were starting to get hungry for lunch. Some friends recommended this restaurant, so we thought that we'd give it a try. It was a Monday night and I'm glad we made reservations. The place was packed the second we walked in. Upon walking in, it was clear that it had a very clean and modern ambiance. We had to wait a little bit for our table even though we had a reservation. However, the host provided use with free edamame for us since we had a little bit of a wait. They were very salty but yummy! Shortly after being seated, our waitress arrived. She was very friendly. We placed our drink orders. The food was ordered a little differently and you ordered using a paper menu. You could also order with the waitress too. The food came together. I placed a pick-up order today (Tuesday) around 11:30AM for lunch. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bowl, sushi lunch combo, and vegetable gyoza. I was told it would be a 15 minute wait time and it was. The food was given to me in a plastic to-go bag with a handle. Inside the bag, the sushi and gyoza were in plastic containers and the chicken teriyaki bowl was in a cardboard container, which got soaked from the miso soup that spilled inside the plastic bag. It was a mess! My biggest complaint is the chicken teriyaki bowl contained a lot of cilantro and red onion, which overpowered the other flavors in the bowl and made it not very enjoyable. Quick to be seated and very friendly staff. We were pleasantly surprised with the flavours and tenderness of the black cod. All the rolls tasted fresh and looked really appetising when they came out. Service was a bit slow after we put in our order but they offered a free bday dessert which was amazing and so generous. I got up from my seat and located the manager to report what happened. She said she would talk to her staff that serviced me. Our waitress finally came back to the table and I explained to her what happened and she told me it is my discretion what I decide to do when it comes to how I was treated and the service I received and she walked off. This is my last time patronizing Hapa Sushi and I will let everyone I know to not patronize this Restaurant! The Manager need to be retrained on common courtesy as well as the employees she oversees. I spent the day in Boulder yesterday and was looking for a new place to enjoy lunch. Hapa is definitely NOT new to me, but dang, it looked so good I opted to go there anyway, even though I've been a frequent Hapa consumer. We grabbed a spot inside to enjoy the air conditioning and began the delicious experience. Thomas was our server and was absolutely wonderful - pleasant, funny, informative and fast! He recommended the Magic Mushrooms so we started off with those and some iced green tea that tasted like toasted sesame seeds (YUM!). The Magic Mushrooms were buttery chunks of avocado wrapped in broiled salmon, topped with aioli and drizzled with sweet soy. Each bite was a phenomenal flavor of healthy fats with a perfect balance of sweet and salt. I wish I'd tried these years earlier! For the main course, I got my regular favorite, the Dragon Roll - shrimp tempura, California mix and cucumber, wrapped in avocado and Unagi, along with the Firecracker Roll - Shrimp tempura, avocado and cucumber topped with spicy tuna, masago mayo, sweet soy and tempura crunch. Both rolls were so decadent and fresh, and we demolished both within minutes. The crunch on the Firecracker Roll was a wonderful balance to the tender spicy tuna topping - I'll definitely be ordering this again. I ordered chicken kabob, a house salad and wagu beef sliders. The salad was a massive pile of greens atop tomato and cucumber slicers with a vinaigrette dressing drizzled on it. Finally, Finally found our sushi place in Boulder! I have to admit the average 3.5 star rating on Hapa through me off; normally Yelp does a great job showing good vs mediocre sushi. So to set the stage, I am incredible sushi snob. I don't mind paying up for good sushi and I have been to the best places in the world. However a true omakase restaurant in Boulder is elusive, so have been seeking "something solid". To that end, Hapa sushi fit the bill. We ordered 4-5 orders of Nigiri (and along with Sashimi represents the true litmus test for good or poor quality fish). We also got 2 vegetable rolls (asparagus and Cucumber/avocado). 2 shrimp Tempura rolls and 2 of their special, big rolls. Started the meal with a house salad and we also had a couple of beers. All of that came out to be around $160, which for the amount and quality of the food, i thought quite reasonable. Standouts are definitely the roll; while the fish was great, it wasn't over the top amazing the way that you would have at a true omakase restaurant. The $16 toro (2 pieces) was buttery and delicious. My favorites were the specia rolls that were on the menu (they had some names that i can't remember, but the rice, sauces and quality of the fish and vegetables were great. The ambiance was lively and it felt awesome to be out and in a vibrant, bustling restaurant. We were able to make reservations, were seated promptly and the service was great. Stepping into Hapa, you notice a charming, if not dated interior that aspires to high end sushi of yesteryear on the coasts. It's bustling! We get seated at the sushi bar. It's nice with flowing water running by. Within 3 minutes we'd been asked 4-5 times if we were ready to order. It was one of the most awkward, clunky service experiences we've had in a while - oh, here, have some water as glasses are juggled as they were trying to also take back menus. We ended up ordering the daikon fries and miso soup to start. Miso soup is from the standard sushi restaurant tap. The daikon fries were crispy and went well with the ketchupy dip. If somehow I end up back, would order the fries again. The sushi, tl:dr. 2/3 the rolls on the menu you'd end up better just getting grocery store sushi. They're alright, kind of disappointing as the menu descriptions sounded good but the rolls fall completely flat since besides rice, they were scant on content. We also got some of their specialty sushi. They come a bit bigger and smothered. They're good but I don't know how many pieces I could eat since the novelty kind of wears off. 4/5. Overall fun vibe but don't go if you're looking to have excellent sushi. read more
