This was the closest place with very reasonable prices. I was shocked at how affordable they are. Staying on weekdays and weekends, the average cost per night was only 75! The cabin was clean and had just what you need. Queen bed , a mini fridge, heater, a/c! They do have grills for each cabin but you are better off bringing your own. The provided grill is small. The bathrooms and shower were very well kept. Clean and always supplied with TP. They had firewood for purchase at 25 cents a log. They had 2 boats (canoes) to use. No extra money required. Quiet hours were respected and everyone staying there was friendly. Steve in the front was awesome. Great customer service. This place really knows how to take care of their customers and they truly care about their facility. It all shows. I will be coming back here if I travel up north again. Keep up the great work!

I told her it was a vehicle that was modified, we have a bed (very comfortable one), working ac, etc. she said OK I have one site available. Woohoo!! We drove hours.. and hours.. to get there to be turned away because we didn't have a RV. They blocked our campsite with gulf carts before we got there with other employees standing in our spot with their arms crossed to tell us to leave. I asked if they could accommodate us somewhere else in the campground but rudely was met with a firm NO it's NOT ALLOWED! She said the girl that made the reservation "didn't understand what I was talking about". This area doesn't have a plethora of available camping on the spot so we were left high and dry! BUT! We did find a LOVELY place (that literally had a cancellation that same day) if you're stuck in the same situation with these people. Chain O'Lakes Campground is AMAZING!! ZERO STARS to Honcho Rest. The campground was clean, the spaces are not cramped together and more than a few have lake views. There is running water, pit toilets, and steps down to the lake, and each campsite has a picnic table, fire ring, and parking spot. A few are against the forest, some are in the middle of the site, and the others kind of by the lake (these were my favorite, nothing like waking up in the morning and looking out on a clear blue body of water). Overall I was very happy with this campground, it seemed underused, which was kind of surprising given the beauty and quietude of the area. My only complain was that it had a lot of yellow jackets that wanted to eat my lunch more than I did. Bring spray or something, you're probably going to want it. Or maybe it was just my site, who knows. You can fish in the lake, it's stocked with trout. The water also seemed very clean, I almost went for a swim (it wasn't that cold either). There is also a day-use area, so you can just picnic or fish if you feel like it. To get here you have to drive down S Stephan Bridge Rd and will then take a left - keep your eyes peeled for the sign. There is also a sign on MI-72 which will point you in the right direction.

I stumbled upon this motel by chance, and I'm so glad I did. After traveling all day, all we wanted was a hot shower and a good night's rest. The room has a nostalgic, throwback feel, but it was exceptionally clean. The sheets were crisp and bright white, the bathroom was spotless, and the carpet had been freshly vacuumed. The owners who checked me in were incredibly kind and welcoming. It was nice to see the whole family there--it gave the place a warm, personal touch. I'm truly grateful I found this motel. If you're looking for a clean, comfortable, and welcoming place to stay, I would definitely recommend it.

We stayed on one of the "cabins" with a kitchenette (really just a larger motel room). Kitchen space was a little tight, cookware was very limited (fortunately we'd brought most of ours) and most appliances were old. The oven ran hot and scorched one of our meals, and one stove burner didn't function. The microwave was a bit sluggish. Still, it served us fairly well for a few days of breakfasts and dinners. Walls, tiles, and carpets in the cabin show plenty of wear though they're far from decrepit, and the room was very clean. It takes a while for the water to run hot, though once it does it is very hot! The shower stall was clean and roomy; even at 6'6" I didn't have to bend to get under the nozzle. Our double bed was small, on the soft side but not uncomfortable, with loosely fitted sheets that tended to come off easily. Thought the price was a bit high for what we got, but I've paid more for less. Fay's offers some discounts at local restaurants that can help save a few bucks on chow. They won't be my first choice for lodging in the area, though they're not a bad choice at all, especially if you want to be close to town.

We called and emailed numerous times to get ahold of someone since the code to our cabin wouldn't work either. We were late checking in by the time we could get ahold of someone. Then the lights in the kitchen wouldn't work. We found a blown fuse but then ran into issues with the fireplace downstairs that the switch didn't work on. This continued with finding no light bulb in a lamp to the upstairs shower not working. 12 people had to use 1 shower! We called and the only person available to assist was at the bar. He finally came over that night and said he'd get us a discount. Then we get to the clubhouse and the sauna is out of order and the hot tub was dirty. We asked for some cleaning to be done so we could use it and no one would answer again. Since leaving that weekend, we never got a discount and never heard back from anyone despite repeat calls! They won't even answer phone calls and still no response to my email from check in.

This is large as state forest campgrounds go, consisting of four loops with about half a dozen…read moresites each. Most of the sites are fairly open, so shade during the heat of the day can be hard to come by. Generally sites are level. Many sites overlook the river, and since the campground is on the river, it's a good option for canoe campers. Water from the hand pump is a bit rustier in appearance than what you see in most state forest campgrounds, though it tastes fine. One advantage of this campground is its central location. If you'll be visiting different places around the Grayling area (say, fishing the Au Sable as well as the Manistee river), this is a better jumping off point than the campgrounds located further up or downstream on the Manistee. It's only seven miles back to Grayling, so a grocery or ice run doesn't have to take a sizeable chunk out of your morning or afternoon. That said, this convenience comes at a price. If you're looking for a quiet getaway, this is not the place. M72 stays busy much of the day and night, so traffic noise will be a constant. There's a large, busy canoe livery directly across the river, which can get very loud when the canoeists arrive back (often a bit intoxicated) from their floats. Even so, I still make it here once or twice a year. The location plus good fishing nearby make the inconveniences tolerable.

My kids and I stayed here for a family reunion (of approx. 85 people) recently. The property…read moreitself is nice--clean, very quiet, far enough away from city lights that you can see lots of stars at night--but I had a couple of issues with the cabin we stayed in. The back deck was accessible from my bedroom on the main floor, but the door to the deck was stuck so badly at the top that I had to use all my strength to yank it open. I was afraid I would end up breaking the glass in the door, so I left it alone after that. Secondly (and I suppose this is minor), the shower head in the main floor bathroom was one that shot out thin streams of water quite forcefully. After a while it felt like needles on my skin. Not pleasant. Oh--and if you want something more than barely-adequate hotel-style linens and towels, you'll have to bring your own. Overall, though, it was a nice getaway at a reasonable price, and great for a family reunion.
