First of all, it would be great if this business changed its name to something more culturally sensitive. They offer a great service and we totally appreciate that. Having a non-racist name would be an excellent change. Spending a summer day floating down the White River has become an annual tradition for a small group of friends and this business makes it easy. The phones and front desk is managed by a bunch of teenagers who sometimes provide spotty service, but we've learned to keep our expectations low in that regard. This Canoe Livery is perfect on the essentials, though. We like the variety of tube styles (some have a bottom for those chilly early summer days, some have a cup holder, some are kid sized). The way the process works is you pay a fee to rent your tube, then they will bus you to a drop off point. You float down the river for 2-3 hours, enjoying sunshine, cool water and forest views. You will then reach a landing (which is also the place you departed from). It's obvious and impossible to miss. We recommend a cooler for your favorite beverages and a dry bag to keep your important items safe. The front desk will hold your keys while you float, which isn't a bad idea. We've seen people lose their keys on the river before. In these times when many of us are looking for more outdoor activities, a river float is one of our favorites. A great sport to make a memory! Whether you are with just one person or a group, Happy Mohawk has great service and quality canoes and tubes. Nestled in the back roads of Montague is this hidden gem and it is full of beautiful scenery along the river. White River is clean and typically has a slower flow to it. Happy Mohawk has the transportation covered for when you first get on the River and when you get off the river depending on where you are getting on and off at. It is very helpful and makes the experience worth free. I definitely recommend Happy Mohawk. Bring sunscreen and wear a hat! It can get super busy on the weekends during peak summer months so plan ahead! read more

Took two trips to the west side of the state for camping this summer and ended up tubing at HAPPY MOHAWK 3 times. Would definitely return - the pros and cons are listed below. Pros - Nice length as the ride is 2-2.5 hours - provide straps to tie tubes together and also paddles which was helpful for getting out of tricky situations on the river - most of the river is shallow so if you get out it's easy to get back in the tube - lots of the trip is shady and the river is the perfect width (not too wide unlike other rivers I've tubes this summer) - have place to rinse off feet after after the tube ride - bathrooms were nice and clean up change in before and after the trip - all staff were very informative of telling us how long the tube ride would be and helping us out on any questions we had Cons - They either had tubes with headrest but no hole in the middle or tubes with a hole in the middle but no headrest. Wish they offered a tube with a head rest and a hole in the middle. - the bus driver was VERY impatient with us. We made reservations every time and if we were not by the bus by the time of the reservation he was not happy. He would call out our name every couple of minutes asking where everyone in our party was located. All three times we arrived slightly before the time of the reservation but were not ready to load the bus for 5-10 minutes after the reservation by the time we paid, put sunscreen on, and changed. I think they should tell people on the phone to arrive 15-20 minutes before your reservation or have the employees driving the bus not be so impatient. I enjoyed my three trips to HAPPY MOHAWK and will be back when I return to the west side of Michigan. read more

What a great experience from start to finish!! We were there in early June, so we pretty much had the river to ourselves. We had 2 two-person kayaks (my husband and I, with a kid in each), and did the 3 hour trip. It was a little challenging with my 10 yr old son, at first, but we both quickly synched together amd figured out how to steer and paddle the kayak. Younger kids might have some issues. Very relaxing trip down the river. A few obstacles, but nothing too crazy. There's a campground pull out where you can stop and eat (pack a small cooler!!). We stopped for a bit and moved on. Nice to see the woods and such. Really felt like we were out in the middle of nowhere. Saw a lot of turtles and a muskrat, but not too much of anything else. My oldest son thought he saw an eagle way up high. We got back to the landing, and only waited about 20 mins to be picked up. Wasn't bad at all. Extremely friendly staff. Would totally do this again next time we're this way... read more

My family did a three hour canoe/kayaking rental. Most of us were newbies, but overall we really enjoyed ourselves. The staff were friendly and efficient. The river was the perfect scenic setting for our adventure. It was truly an adventure since this was a first time experience! The river is calm, but we didn't realize that it isn't "lazy"! My mom definitely needed chocolate after all the paddling with my dad in the canoe. I had a kayak, and loved it. Yes, more work than I expected, but that ended up being what I liked most. The second eight miles of the trip had some downed branches and shallow water, which meant lots of maneuvering and getting out at one point to walk through the shallows. It made me feel like I was on a true adventure. Being a suburbanite, it was awesome to be out in nature like that. And I really felt like I earned that burger and milkshake at dinner! read more

Ok, so if you're not from the White Lake area, then you're probably a bit underwhelmed by the variety of choices that await you in terms of "things to do," right? I mean, there are a LOT of activities, but about 99.9% of them are water-based, water-themed, or water-filled to some degree. You may be getting tired of it, but the Happy Mohawk Canoe Livery is... Tourist: Ok, Tom, look - no more water! Isn't there something else we can do than sit in another boat for an hour? Tom: But Mr./Mrs./Ms. Tourist, hear me out - this is more than just a chance to sit in a boat for awhile! The Happy Mohawk Canoe Livery (try saying that five times fast...) is really a neat experience, too! Not only must you actively navigate your canoe (or raft, tube, whatever) downriver, but you also get to view some of the most pristine wilderness that Michigan has to offer. Tourist: I guess, but will we see anything neat? Tom: Sure! There are tons of animals native to the White Lake area who make homes at, in, or on the river! Turtles, frogs, birds (both native and migratory) muskrats (not as smelly as people say!) It's just a fun, relaxing time and the whole family can enjoy it. We had so much fun on our raft! The staff was friendly and courteous. A bald eagle flew over us. We saw some turtles and lots of dragon flies landing on our hats. Tip: Bring bug spray for the beginning of the trip. read more

Overall our trip was fun! The bus to take you to the river only comes once an hour so plan accordingly - we had to wait 45 mins. I wish they told me that on the phone! The tubes aren't bad, but they're nothing amazing. About half way through there was a fallen tree that took over the whole river and we had to get out of our tubes and walk on the side that was full of holes and mud. A huge process to untie 8 tubes and safely get everyone over/around. I wish we were warned or they addressed it when we got back. The cooler tube was big and cheap. The river wasn't overcrowded. read more

Very peaceful and serene canoe or tubing trip on a calm river. Staff is very friendly and helpful. It is ok to bring a lunch and swim on the private banks. Excellent for beginners. Bus brings you to launching area or can pick you up further down the river. Good prices for families. Nice for vacationers to experience some untouched natural beauty. read more
