It went well from the first moment of contact. We were in town preparing for our daughters wedding that was coming up in the next few weeks. We have a beloved family dog who needed somewhere to play and be happy. We found happy tails and immediately knew we found the right place. Jay was welcoming and accommodating given our out-of-town status. Enrollment, including uploading health and safety data as well as scheduling the time that we needed to have our pup in their care, could not have been smoother. We did a test run two days before the wedding for 4 to 5 hours and agreed that if we didn't want to be at the wedding so badly we would spend the day at happy Tails! Whitaker was quickly noted to be a "good boy ". We returned on Saturday early in the morning and left him in good hands until the pick up at closing time on the same day. Everyone was happy and we wonder should we move to Portland in order to use this wonderful doggy daycare? I've been taking our dogs to Happy Tails for at least 12 years. Prices are very fair, bookings are easy, the facility is spotless and easy to get in and out of, and staff are always kind, friendly, accommodating and super nice to the dogs. My girls seem well-treated, well-rested and happy when I pick them up, and they never come home with that faintly yucky smell that I've noticed after leaving some overcrowded facilities. Oh dear, I used to love Happy Tails, but I won't be going back since our last experience there. First the plusses. The dogs are safe, the place is clean, it's very convenient and overall the staff is wonderful. What's the problem? We left our little one there for 5 hours one day and found out that she had been "resting" for four and a half of them. It took 3 emails and a phone call to get any response from the manager about my concern. She said she had called and left a VM (after many attempts to reach her). I'll take her word for it. I finally went in. My dog, who is happy and eager to do anything at all, did not want to get out of the car there, and then pulled to leave when we got inside. She has never done that ​ever, anywhere. The manager suggested that they had not gone out much that day because of the weather. Nope, it was a fine day. The two employees who were on that shift no longer worked there so she couldn't check with them. She seemed not to know that there were 80 dogs that day, instead of the usual 40. I asked if they were short staffed. She said no, although it was her turn to take dogs out to one of the yards, and there was no one else to do it while she was talking to me. She said that the usual rest to play ratio is 45-60 minutes of rest to 20 minutes of play, so the dogs don't get overstimulated and "learn to calm themselves." She couldn't tell me why it was 135 minutes rest to 15 minutes of play at our last visit. The kicker was having a look at the rest area. Small cubicles with water bowls but no toys or bedding on the concrete floor. Four and a half hours lying on a concrete floor without even a blanket or toy? Even if the typical rest:play ratio is what she said, that's still 3:1. I'm sorry to lose this facility that we used to love. read more

Happy Tails is just the best. They took my 1 year puppy with very short notice since I had to be hospitalized, and kept him longer than originally planned until I was released. They very kindly made sure that I could pick him up a little late since I was coming on the train from Boston. I had never been apart from him. They gave updates and photos, and I was relieved to know he was very safe and happy. He got to play with the other doggies, and he had a great time. The facility is large and very nice. I reserved the training area for a seminar and sent a $200 deposit. Unfortunately approximately one month prior to the seminar the person leading the seminar ended up with serious health issues and had to cancel. I immediately contacted Happy Tails and sent along the cancellation email. There is NOTHING in the contract that states it is non-refundable. After multiple emails I was told that corporate would send a check directly to me. This was in November and still nothing. I am planning to schedule another seminar with a different person but Hapoy Tails will not get our business this time. read more

How much do I love this place!!! The staff is always positive and fun to engage. They are always happy to see Max and the other dogs. They seem to have a good grip on each dog that frequents Happy Tails. Max is so laid back and I believe it has everything to do with his ability to integrate with other dogs two days a week at Happy Tails. He gets to be a dog...which is weird to say, but as a dog owner, I realize there is a difference when he is home and when he is being a dog at Happy Tails. It is all for the good. We made a reservation well in advance to board our dogs while visiting my sister in Yarmouth. I emailed, uploaded photos and vax certificates to the website, and spoke to someone on the phone. Our dog LOVES Happy Tails - and we love the customer service, and how tired and happy she is when we pick her up! We started sending our pup to Happy Tails doggie daycare several months ago. She is young and hadn't been socialized with many other dogs; Happy Tails did a wonderful job acclimating our pup with other dogs and even helps with basic training/obedience. Since going to Happy Tails about once a week, our dog is much more social with dogs, has improved her basic obedience skills, and is better about how she greets humans (e.g. less jumping). While it can be tough to reach someone when you call (the staff are always with the dogs), if you leave a message they get back to you very quickly! And once your dog(s) go for their "Paw-sonality" test, you don't have to schedule doggie daycare visits, you just drop them off on whatever day(s) work for you. It's nice to not have to worry week to week which days they go. They are open 7 days a week, with long hours. They do punch card sales every few months, which is a great deal. And they started using a new software (Gingr) for reservations, payments, and records. Very easy to use and convenient. Our dog just did her first overnight boarding (which needs to be scheduled in advance on the phone/voicemail or through the Gingr reservation app). We had a great experience: It was super easy to schedule, even with short notice, and our dog came home very happy. What really showed was that the next time we dropped her off, she was beyond excited to see the staff and her doggie friends. I would highly recommend Happy Tails to any dog owner, and am excited to see all the additional services they will offer with the new aquatic room that is being built! read more

I like the owner. However, we had a problem with our dog experiencing anxiety during stays after no problems for over a year. The weekend staff was not helpful in trying to work with us to figure out why there was a change and basically made it clear they would prefer we not bring our dog back rather than helping us figure it out. read more

Happy Tails continues to impress. Our dog had a minor altercation this weekend with another dog. Happy Tails' staff was communicative, attentive to Luna, cleaned up her injuries and made sure she took it easy the rest of the day and worked to ensure that she hadn't been emotionally scarred by her doggie run-in. Luna is, I am glad to report, happy as a clam and doesn't even seem to be bothered by her injuries. Happy Tails even comped our entire stay as a gesture of apology. Definitely recommend. Dogs get into fights sometimes, it happens, and Happy Tails handled the situation professionally and safely. I have every confidence that they would be prepared to respond to a bigger incident if one happened, and that they did everything they could to make the whole thing as smooth as possible for both Luna and for us! The staff is friendly and attentive, and very careful to match dogs in playgroups according to their personalities and histories. This is a wonderfully run dog care facility. Dog care is not always easy, as there is a lot to coordinate and sometimes plans change-- especially when it comes to dog walking. I have used walking and boarding as well as daycare services, and I'm always happy and even impressed with the flexibility and professionalism I get. They communicate well and are open to communication from dog owners. My dog is always excited to go, and tires out when he comes home. When I first started taking my dog to daycare, I thought this place was great. He always came home tired. But as the business grew, so did the groups that the dogs were placed in. For reasons unknown, my dog became skittish and reactive to other dogs. I believe that this was because he was put into too large of a play group and was not separated from the dogs that frightened him. I have also heard through the grapevine that high energy dogs or scared dogs are pulled out of group and placed in a pen by themselves because the staff does not want to deal with them. To a dog, this is punishment for being scared and they respond with aggression. I have seen the size of the outdoor groups, with only one person watching, and feel that it is not safe to have that many dogs together at one time. I also think the staff does not tell the owners if their dog is having a problem, so they continue taking the dog thinking everything is fine. I think a daycare should work with the owners to make the experience the most rewarding for the dog and to curb any problems that may arise. If you decide to take your dog here be wary. Many dogs do great; however, if your dog has a tendency to become overwhelmed or is shy, this place may make the problem worse. read more

We found ourselves in a serious pinch with unexpected travel for bereavement to the UK for 2 weeks, and our usual dog sitter (my Mom) had a broken shoulder. Our enthusiastic golden doodle needed some extra TLC.... that's where Happy Tails (Frank- and Bridget too) came in to save the situation. Frank came to Yarmouth to meet our pup, walked her for nearly 10 days, and had her at day care once. He put my Mom at ease knowing that Happy Tails could provide whatever level of care was needed.
