Incredible spot serving only vegetarian/vegan Chinese food! This place is tucked away in one of the Chinatown food courts, so it may be a little tricky to find but I promise it's worth it. The lady behind the counter is always busy but always friendly. She helped us make decisions about what to get and never lets us down. The black pepper "beef" stir fry is me and my partner's personal favorite. The tofu and eggplant hot pot is also nice (and served piping hot!!). The portion sizes are massive, providing excellent value. We are considering making Happy Veggie House a weekly stop in our household. Definitely check it out! read more

Wow! I ordered for the first time through Uber Eats. Everything was tastey, delectable, and satisfying!!! Portions were enough for leftovers which were just as perfect!!! I had Vegetarian Beef and Brocolli, Sticky Rice in Lotus leaf, Assorted flavors-Wheat Gluten, and Dumplings, for desert I had the flan. I'm writing this on a borderline food coma after having the best vegan Chinese meal of my life. Everything you want and miss from this style of cuisine and (to my knowledge) the whole menu is vegan. You'll spend your time repeating to yourself 'just one more bite' until 75-80 times later you realise it's probably best to take the rest of the food with you. We got the Spring Rolls, Wanton Soup, Veggie House Chow Mein, 'Beef' in Satay Sauce and special Fried Rice and every bite was amazing. Will 100% be back to explore the menu. Delicious vegan options! Would like more of an explanation of what exactly the meat substitutes are. I really am not sure what I ate..I did feel a bit unwell after eating the ginger chicken. It was crispy sticky goodness. Needed more sauce for the rice. I also got the noodle dumpling soup. It was pretty good. Dumplings had a bit of an odd spice for me and broth wasn't overly flavorful. The location isn't great. It's inside an Asian mall that is mostly closed down, should've door dashed instead of walking there. read more

I ate there around April 27, 2022 just after noon time. Google Maps says you have arrived but you cannot see the restaurant because it is inside a small mall with other merchants. You have to figure out how to enter the mall. I had to use paid parking as street parking spaces were being used. I think I will go back a second time. I arrived tired and was not paying attention. I had heard the restaurant served specials under $10 but when I arrived the specials were $12.50 and $13.50 instead of $8.50 and $9.50? I ordered the $12.50 one. The lady who served me was considerate. Although, I wish people in restaurants who are serving customers would not use their cell phones while talking to customers. Nonetheless, she took care of me. After I paid, she got me to sit down in courtyard seating while she prepared my meal. Food was fresh and tasty with two veggie servings along with a large serving of white rice and a veggie spring roll. I will have to try this place again another time. Perhaps it has other food options that I missed. I need to find out if the specials under $10 still exist or if prices have been jacked up. read more

In my opinion, this is the best place to eat vegan in Calgary. It is also my new favorite place to eat in general. While I appreciate the vegan places scattered about the city, something about the formality, overpricing, and yuppie atmosphere of such places has always been a turn-off for me. Happy Veggie House is laid back and located in a fairly quiet location, and you get a lot for your money's worth. I almost want to dock one star from my former reviews because this place outdoes them all. While I tried and enjoyed the stuffed tofu rolls that fellow Yelpers raved about, I feel that the real prize is the lunch special items. I was going to take a picture of my plate but I felt compelled to swallow everything as soon as possible. They do outstanding things with seitan and tempeh, and the server was kind enough to let me try a little bit of everything. Delicious! Was in Calgary for work and in need of some vegetables (so hard to find while traveling). I tried the Kung Pao "chicken". The imitation chicken was so tasty, lots of veggies, and not greasy! The taste of the "chicken" reminded me of the canned Chinese imitation meats but even better. The stuffed tofu roll is DELICIOUS and very special- gorgeous crispy tofu skin stuffed with shredded veg, a stunner. Ask for spicy sauce to zing it up. Great value and a great item. I'd usually got the sampler with various styles of gluten and it was okay but for some jarringly sweet notes and it's a massive pile of food but is a bit monotonous. Chinese food is notoriously difficult for vegetarians as so much of the cuisine revolves around meat. Happy Veggie House has completely solved this problem! All of their dishes include the tastes, textures, and flavours of traditional Chinese take-out but are meat-free! This place is my go-to when I need comfort food, or when it's my turn to pick which restaurant to order from. It's the absolute best! We love to put the Assorted Wheat Gluten (large) on top of the Singapore Noodles. We also always order the Dumplings, Spring Rolls, and "Chicken" in Black Pepper Sauce. The Ginger "Beef" is also really good. I don't love the Pineapple Fried Rice as I feel it lacks something, but honestly, it's all delicious. Give it a try! You'll be pleased! read more

Great vegetarian food. Very fresh. Cantonese style which is rare to find in the United States. I am glad we get a chance to try it.

This is tucked away in the food court in Chinatown of the building that Thai Tai anchors at the corner of 2nd Ave and Centre St. The menu consists mainly of wheat gluten formed into various versions, some of it looking like pieces of pork chop to rolled up sheets of tofu. I had the veggie combo. The portions are extremely generous and the gluten varied from one looking like beef cubes, having some what of a texture of beef and flavoured with soy and some anise. There was also curried gluten, sweet and sour gluten and one that looked a little like a pork chop which was sliced up and even had the texture of meat. It was all surprisingly quite tasty. I'm not sure it will be part of my regular diet but surprisingly filling. I was full for hours. I didn't care much for the curried gluten or the sweet and sour but the other three were ok. They also have other offerings such as a vegetarian version of the rice cooked in a pot (like you get get dim sum with pork ribs or chicken) that looked interesting as well as some stir frys and noodle dishes. This unassuming little eatery is inside a strip mall (City Plaza) in Chinatown. I have seen it changed ownership a few times, but so far it looks like they're here to stay! I think most people come here for their lunch combos, but they actually have a full menu which sadly to say, I haven't tried yet. I usually just come by to grab a lunch box to go - you can choose steamed rice or fried vermicelli, plus two or three items on the "buffet", plus their soup of the day and a spring roll - two items will set you back $7.95 + tax or three items will be $8.95 + tax. Their selection is slightly different every day, but they always have the marinated gluten (in different flavors) and you can get those by the pound. I like the variety and everything tastes so good! One day I will try their offerings off the full menu, or maybe I'll call ahead of time to order as their dishes are made to order so it'll take some time. If you haven't tried Chinese vegetarian food before, this would be a good place to start. Do note that they're cash only and does get pretty busy! read more

Fresh family run vegetarian Chinese cuisine in a little strip mall in Chinatown. Amazing prices and one of the only places you can get " seitan" ( aka the wheat meat) in this city.
