If anyone LGBTQ+ is reading this...I have been a part of and led at MANY similar churches…read morenationwide with great worship, youth group, and evangelical-style preaching. Most are not LGBTQ+ affirming but are what they call "welcoming." I thought this was one of those types of churches. My wife, kids, and I were recommended this church by one of our friends. She said it would be a good fit for us. At that same time, another mom of our kids' friends invited our kids to a movie night and told them to invite their parents to come along. It seemed great since more than one person had recommended this church to us, so we went with our kids. We attended the movie night and a couple of Sunday services, and our kids loved the youth group, so we wanted to give it a shot. Unfortunately, it turns out that the mom who invited our kids to the movie night did not know we were a gay family. We showed up and sat by her and her husband, and two days later our friend came over very upset. We asked what happened, and she said the couple that invited us to the movie night were deacons from the church and also her neighbors. They had realized at the movie night that we were a lesbian couple with kids, and they informed our friend that we were not welcome at the church and that we should not be attending. I got a call right after that from the church after filling out a visitor card, and I told the lady on the phone what happened. She said she works closely with the pastor (I forget her title,) and said that the pastor would want to speak to us about what had happened. I contacted her again when I did not hear anything back, and she told me she did tell the pastor about the incident, and that he would be calling us, but is very busy. .... I quickly realized it was a call that would never come, lol. We had to tell our kids that we needed to look elsewhere. I am happy to have found an affirming church that we love and are very involved with, but in case any other LGBTQ+ individuals, families, or allies are looking for a church in this area, I wanted you to know what happened. No matter what their beliefs are, I do not believe this is how Jesus would have wanted a family seeking a church to be treated by DEACONS in the church. I was the daughter of a mother who was known worldwide in the Christian world as a leader, speaker, and president of a Christian organization, and a father who was an elder, nationwide leader, and board member, so I was appalled at how church leadership handled this.

I don't do small groups…read more Then I met this young, strapping man who looked like he took a break from an Elite model runway who asked me repeatedly to join the LACG small group at Cafe Mak in classy Koreatown. Hesitant, I attended reluctantly. After a couple months, it became a blessing, pleasure, with delightful surprises, healthy accountability, and joyful laughter. It was a weekly event that I was looking forward to like a boy awaiting the release of a great video game. The community group's main theme? Jobs. Why? It's because they're either soul-crushing or a symbol of our personal goals and desires. So far, our prayers were all answered. That's right. Drop your jaw in disbelief. But careers don't define us. They are timely examples of His grace and love for our minds and souls to relax and use our workspace and our self-esteem to help, love, and pray for those who don't know God. Back to LACG! Most of us have grown incredibly close. I've seen friends leave due to jobs and/or distance. I've witnessed some of us fall in love who will also flee in the near future. New and old faces come and go but the thread of the small group remains intact. Spiritual growth is relational. You can't grow spiritually alone-- it is impossible. The group keeps us humble, open, honest, and brave. I believe we've all become better listeners except for a couple of us who still need practice on focusing and being prompt. Miracles are welcome. Pastor Tim and Pastor Daniel have discovered themes and messages that apply to our lives in the modern world with familiar scenarios of conflict with others, individual sins or addictions, emotional flaws, and understanding God's word without being righteous ourselves. I love how concise, direct, and significant the sermons are that don't drone or repeat themselves. You should know that church is the people. We go to church because we're dirty. Not because we're clean. I'm the dirtiest by the way. "We cannot change unless our love exceeds our fear."

It's time I've edited and updated my review…read more I've had the privilege to be at this church since the beginning. And these past 3 years, since the church's inception, have been amazing. People have come and gone...and come back again! The church has been on the verge of closing, but now it's truly in a season of growth. SBMC is not a perfect church, but it is a place in which gospel-centered community is truly evident. As opposed to programs and specific ministries, we try to do LIFE together. It's hard, but it's joyous struggle as we seek to disciple one another and grow in our faith in Jesus. Hebrews 10:24-25: "And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near." ***To whoever is seeking, there are also plenty of great churches in the South Bay and God's universal church isn't confined to a building or a single congregation. Hope you find a church community where you can serve and grow.***

What an AMAZING church! The love of God is SO powerful here!…read more A friend of mine had been trying to get me to come to their Friday night, young adults Bible studies for months. It's called Soldiers of the Son, or S.O.S. For short. I finally caved in and absolutely loved it! I was overwhelmed with people welcoming me, hugging me, introducing themselves to me, and asking all sorts of questions about me. I had literally never been to a church where people cared so much about new people. I felt seen and very much loved, even though I barely met these people. Fast forward two months, I've attended some of their Sunday services, and even participated in their 35th anniversary celebration services. The Friday worship night was off the hook! It's not often you get to just come to church and just sing your heart out to God! The whole church community at Living Bread has been such a blessing to my life, and I'm sure to the lives of so many others. It's such a healthy, wholesome, and spirit-filled ministry! I hope and pray they continue to fervently serve & follow the Lord!

Maybe someone from the church will read this and turn up the temperature. We would be grateful and return. Many blessings for this dear church.
