Harbour Air provides a quick and reliable alternative to BC Ferries for reaching points on the Lower Mainland. BC Ferries' reduced schedule from Nanaimo and increased fares are swiftly making harbor planes the way to travel, instead of a special treat to catch a show downtown or make an early morning flight without the hassle of parking and driving.
I needed to make a 10 AM international flight from Vancouver International Airport, and originally planned to catch the Duke Point - Tsawassen Ferry and drive to the airport at a cost close to $100 for the car and two passengers. At that rate, I decided to check Harbour Air's website to price shop and I'm glad I did. Flights are short, direct, and snappy.
Some of the highlights:
1. A next day, 7:50AM ticket to Vancouver was $48. Buy in advance and the savings are great.
2. Plentiful flights throughout the day and evening.
3. The flight duration is 30 minutes, better than 90 - 120 minutes for the ferry.
4. Gorgeous views over Gabriola and Mudge Islands and Georgia Strait. Bring your camera and sit next to a window.
5. Landing on the Fraser River is a fun experience.
6. Luggage is stored in the floats and in the back area.
7. There's a pub at the riverside terminal if you want a bite to eat or unwind before heading on to the headache of YVR.
My full flight took off from glass-smooth seas on a gorgeous Monday, and our friendly captain allowed one of the passengers to sit in the jump seat. I wish I'd thought of that first! The DeHavilland Beaver took off and seemed to reach its cruising altitude just about the time we needed to descend over Richmond. Some passengers brought earplugs for the propeller, completely unnecessary even if you sit on a wing. The Fraser River landing was the bumpiest part of our ride, and we touched down to a light breeze. Airline staff got us moored and luggage unloaded in only a few minutes. Regular shuttles depart for the main terminal and other YVR terminals, taking you right up to the front doors. Sure beats hunting for a spot or being shooed in the drop-off zone!
Sea planes depart from Nanaimo's harbourfront at a private quay connected to the Lighthouse Bistro and Pub. Ample parking all along Front Street and the Port Authority structure is meter only, so bring your quarters. Port facilities are monitored, clean, and well-maintained. The main office for Harbour Air sits on the pedestrian walkway just before the Lighthouse Bistro where you check-in, purchase tickets, and weigh luggage. Due to space limitations, luggage is measured and weighed carefully.
Special note, free beverages, newspapers, muffins and pastries are available in the lobby at the Lighthouse Bistro. Tazo teas and hot chocolate are also provided if you're not up for a cup of coffee. I wouldn't take these on the plane unless you have a travel mug.
Harbour Air also offers a cargo service. Definitely worth checking into if you need something dropped off ASAP in Vancouver and don't want to trust Canada Post. read more
