But when it comes to the flooring work, a few things happened: a. The majority of my purchased laminate materials was wasted due to installation challenges resulted from uneven subfloors: Before project started, I explicitly confirmed with the company on the product I intended to purchase and received the thumbs up. When my original carpet was removed, the contractor quickly found out that my subfloor was uneven, which present challenges to installation. With two attempts using almost all the materials, we concluded the product was not viable unless we either level the floor. That decision could have been made earlier b. The vinyl installation was suboptimal: Then I suggested I go together to pick a more flexible vinyl product with the contractor. As you can see in the picture, the installation was sub-optimal. The contractor attempted to float the vinyl but multiple pieces popped up after installation. Then an attempt to glue down some of the pieces was pursued. What you see on the picture was the outcome. At this point, this project has started since two months ago. I do not know what else can be done, nor do I want to push for another cycle of reinstallation so I closed the project. The other day, I walked in the new ORD airport pedestrian walkway. The vinyl planks there were well installed despite the fact the ORD subfloor was not even either. Typically, I'd expect the output of a residential project to be higher quality than commercial space, presumably due to smaller space. Am I missing something? I appreciate the hard work but I really cannot give thumbs up to the output. This is an investment property. I don't even know how my future renters would value the home improvement after spent more than five thousand dollars on it.

What sold me on S.N. Peck vs. their competitors was their old world personability and nearby location. My general contractor Tammy literally drove over to my place to talk to me in person when delivering their bid. The next day I emailed some followup questions...rather than respond to my email she drove over again to talk in person. I never met their veteran President but know that he's President of a local Habitat for Humanity branch, and is shown in photographs wearing a bow tie. Not only was the quality of the contractor's work excellent, but Tammy and the contractor also patiently provided me with thoughtful pointers on my own novice DIY projects in progress- painting, reflooring a room, tearing up carpet. She took time to understand my "vision" for fixing up the place, and showed a genuine curiosity and appreciation for how the work was shaping up. In an age of electronic transactions and automated call waiting systems, it's good to find a place where the customer service comes first.

I had a very bad experience using Jacob. My initial impression was that he was highly professional,…read moreand since he talked a big game I expected he would be very competent. His quotes were expensive but I've used a lot of contractors over the years in rehabbing my homes and serving on association boards, and know the value of paying extra for high quality help, so Jacob stood out. Unfortunately Jacob ended up having the terrible combination of being the most expensive while providing the worst quality work of anyone I've ever used. Jacob replaced a broken sump pump along with electrical changes to improve the setup. He was to provide me with a primary pump and a backup pump with "Battery back-up system w/ charging units to be installed for primary pump and secondary pump". Basically, the primary and secondary pump were supposed to both work with AC and DC power from a battery. The primary pump he installed only works on AC, so in a power outage it is worthless(exactly what I wanted to avoid). The backup is a much weaker pump and only works on DC. When I followed up with Jacob he insisted that the primary was just AC, but that it was also backed up, which makes no sense. I wasn't sure if he knew he was scamming me or just didn't know what he was talking about. After getting a chance to research the model he used, it is notorious for being cheap and unreliable. Worse, the electrical work was of embarrassing quality and I'll have to replace it before I could ever sell, and he actually charged me $300 extra due to some "surprise". There are multiple code violations and this job looks so terrible I've attached pictures of it. His reasoning is that I shouldn't care how it looks in my laundry room, and insisted it would pass inspection. Just as a finishing touch, he reused a 17 year old check valve instead of providing a new one, which saved himself ~$25 and threatens the integrity of the whole system. I had other contractors confirm my suspicions of his work and the pumps he used, as well as replace another sewage ejector pump at 1/3 the price of Andrew's quote for a separate project. Now I know I wasn't Jacob's favorite customer, as I was looking to use him for immediate help rebuilding our finished basement after a flood, and all of my other trusted contractors were busy and he was not. I went through different options with him to get the cost down, but at the end he was 50% more expensive than the next highest option, and his scope was much more limited (I was providing most of the materials myself). I had a bad feeling so I cancelled a few hours after telling him we were ready to go. He exploded with insults against me. I felt bad about what happened and know that business owners are competitive so I didn't hold it against him. I apologized and asked him if he would be willing to move forward with the sump pump work described above. This was my biggest mistake. He apologized back and agreed. Maybe his crap work was payback to me, but it is still his unprofessional work and exactly what you are paying to avoid when paying Jacob's prices. You can get quality work using licensed insured contractors that are much less expensive than Jacob. He has a few 5 star reviews out there, but he was so bad for me that I promised myself I would warn others as soon as I got a few moments to write a review.
