Lorenzo and his team turned our Chicago bungalow's upstairs from a half finished attic into 2 bedrooms for our kids, a full bathroom, sky lights, separate AC/heat system and a little open hallway. They were great guys and got this big job done really efficiently over the holidays. It pays to have someone who has experience with these old Chicago houses. We had multiple people tell us it would be impossible to build a full bathroom with a shower up there without popping the roof. Lorenzo did not bat an eye, he said it was no problem, and it wasn't. We were referred to Zo by some friends, who had him do a beautiful renovation job in their kitchen. From the very first phone call, my wife was impressed with his passion for & knowledge about construction work--a noticeable difference from the other contractors we'd talked to (who were all extremely friendly, but didn't exactly exude professionalism). We asked him to rip out all the flooring throughout our newly-purchased condo, and install new hard wood flooring. The estimate was slightly higher than everyone else we talked to, but seemed worth it given the confidence we felt. And we weren't disappointed! The workers were friendly, polite, and efficient. After we discovered water damage in our half-bath that ruined parts of the wall and flooring, we called Lorenzo. We used Archetype several months before to create built-in shelving below our staircase and finish our hardwood floors in the living room, and were so impressed with their work that we immediately knew we wanted Archetype to work on our bathroom. We are THRILLED with the end result! Because of the water damage, we did a complete renovation and Lorenzo's team handled everything (drywall, tile, shiplap, paint, lighting, plumbing, hardwood flooring, etc.). They helped coordinate the purchasing and shipping of things like the tile, toilet, and hardware, so we just had to wait until their team received everything for the job to get started. My wife and I were looking for a property in Pilsen. We were originally looking for a multi-unit building but ending up buying a vacant commercial tavern and converting it into a house. Lorenzo Leon at Archetype, our general contractor, was instrumental in helping find a property suitable for rehab. Lorenzo went to all our showings to make sure the property was sound. Lorenzo found an architect, Arek Jarog and helped in the design or our space. The tavern was originally built in 1883 and was vacant for eight years. The tavern and restaurant were on the first floor and the second floor was an apartment. We used the structure and rehabbed the entire building. Lorenzo supervised every aspect of our project. He figured out problems that occurred along the process. Many issues came up since we were doing a complete gut rehab of a 133 year old corner tavern. We reconfigured many of the windows and opened the windows that were filled with brick. The exterior of the building barely resembles the original structure. His suggestions and experience in problem solving helped make our home amazing. The fit and finish of the home is remarkable and Lorenzo and his team took pride in their work. Lorenzo came out last month for a basement remodel quote. He did not take any measurements or visible notes. He was the ONLY contractor out of 5, that did not take ANY measurement AND did not follow-up. He asked me what the square footage is...? By way of his other questions, he was more curious about what I do for a living (I answered vaguely), and sharing his unsolicited opinion about single mothers (which I am not; strange conversation). What do these have to do with the project? I see they mention in response to other reviews that their quote often goes to junk boxes. I checked, and I do not see it. If that is really an issue wouldn't they follow up with a phone call ? Maybe if I had disclosed that I'm a COO and professor I would have received follow-up. Hopefully, the lack of attention and follow-up to this $100k project was not due to racial profiling and assuming I could not afford it. read more

They get 5 stars alone just for being willing to service the southside. So, I had my attic converted into a master suite and it needed everything. Electrical, plumbing, hvac, insulation, etc. Even including a last minute roof replacement due to a former contractor ripping me off. Lorenzo came by and gave me a very reasonable estimate and he and his crew got to work. The project took about 3.5 months. I had to go out of town twice during that time and the crew took excellent care of my home. I hired Archetype Design to repair some water damaged drywall & paint a level of my house. Lorenzo & his guys were great! I was most concerned about the drywall since it was in a weird corner of my kitchen. Needless to say I was more then impressed with the patch/paint job that was done. My husband I decided to tackle a very large rehab project. I met a lot of contractors prior to choosing Lorenzo and his team, but when I met Lorenzo, I knew he was the right contractor for us. While Lorenzo comes off as laid back, he is thorough, efficient, and demands high quality. With Lorenzo, comes his designer, Kara, who was extremely helpful. She heard our ideas, drew up some visual plans, helped to make choices, and supported us in designing a beautiful space. The work team....Danny, Rigo, Margarito, and Jose are amazing! They show up when they say they are going to show up, inform you when you they will not be there (which is rare), are clean, respectful of your space, and so easy to get along with! Danny is super communicative and available for questions whenever. Overall, the basement remodel took three months or so and looks amazing! We love it! Since finishing, there have been a couple of things that needed attention, but Lorenzo was quick to respond and came to check things and fix whatever needed fixing. We highly recommend Lorenzo and his team! Lorenzo runs a great operation...he was attentive and available throughout the whole project and continues to be even after they have completed. When our Old Town condo needed a plethora of work done - shaving down doors, putting in new carpet, patching and painting, roofing rework from the previous contractor - a friend recommended Lorenzo and Archetype. Reluctant to try yet another different contractor, we requested they first take a look at our half-completed roof project from the previous team. Not only did Lorenzo immediately identify, without prompting, what needed rework and what was still outstanding, but his team was there the next day. Within two weeks, the job that had previously take three months was done and done correctly. I live in a condominium and my front room windows were an unusual style and needed to conform to condo regs, but Lorenzo and his crew were able to order ones that fit the specs to a tee! Installers Tom, Daniel, and Jose were also very professional; not only did they do a great job installing the windows, but also arrived on time each day, were super polite to my roommate/tenant and myself, and cleaned up after themselves. The only reason why this review isn't 5 stars plus is b/c there's not a financing option & paying everything up front can be tough for a lot of people, but you definitely get what you pay for from this business. We needed some work done to improve the soundproofing and smoke-proofing of our condo, which included building an entirely new wall to close-off a a loft bedroom. Lorenzo quickly identified the most cost-effective way to achieve what we wanted, and then delivered exactly what we were looking for. This was a pretty major project, and while Lorenzo and his team wouldn't sacrifice quality for speed, they took down and replaced two walls, built a third wall, painted all those walls, repaired and repainted a two story cathedral ceiling, and painted two other rooms all in less than two weeks, and at a price that did not break the bank. Obviously I'm glad to give Lorenzo a very positive recommendation, and will use him again the next time we need work done. read more

What really impressed me: -They showed up on time to start the job. Lorenzo showed up on time for the initial estimate and was really friendly, didn't try to push for anything I didn't need, but pointed out some damage I hadn't noticed before. When I opted to have them start, they showed up right when they said they would. -They wanted to complete the job ASAP so I could get my place back to normal. Lorenzo's crew had estimated 2-3 days for the work, at at the end of the 2nd day they asked if they could stay late to finish it up. I realized I never wrote a review for the work Lorenzo did in my loft condo in September. Because I love it so much, I thought I better write one. Lorenzo remodeled my guest bathroom and totally transformed it. I had a bathtub taken out and replaced with a large walk-in shower. His people did a great job! Lorenzo himself was accessible to me throughout the whole process and came over many times to discuss my options, show me samples, etc. I also want to mention that he worked with Mary Garst, a bathroom and kitchen designer. She came over, measured and drew up a plan and met me at tile and lighting showrooms. I first got in touch with Lorenzo years ago when my basement flooded and I was about to leave the country and needed some drywall & insulation cut out ASAP to prevent mold. He was there with a crew right away, and got what needed to be done fast and at a fair price. This past January, I had Archetype do a partial remodel of my kitchen - install new countertop, faucet, and sink, put in a tile backsplash and under-cabinet lighting, and rebuild the bottom of a cabinet that had some rot from a previously leaky sink. Because my house was built in 1885 and somewhat shoddily rehabbed prior to my buying it, I inevitably run into issues with things not being square/stable/etc, so this project also ended up involving cutting out and replacing/repainting a good amount of drywall around a window as well as replacing all the electrical outlets in the kitchen. Lorenzo and Tom were wonderfully patient throughout this entire process, even when the work was more involved (drywall, outlets) or took longer (as everything in my house does) than anticipated. They were even patient when I did crazy-person things like insist the countertop that arrived wasn't the one I ordered (Lorenzo literally drove me across town so I could double check against the sample at the warehouse...it was the same) or ask to have the countertop be recut (...multiple times). I would have thrown up my hands and walked out if I were them. They didn't. They are princes. I'm incredibly happy with my new kitchen, and the quality of their work is top-notch. If you are looking to flip a place or do something on the cheap, Archetype isn't the company for you. But if you care about your home and want things done right, Archetype is truly passionate about high-quality work and design. I hope to work with them again many times in the future. read more

It was easy to reach out to Lorenzo, he came over to look at the project and said would be in touch for the quote. Then he disappeared. I never heard back from him. It was my impression that my job too small for him. This is actually the case for majority of the Chicago contractors. As soon as they get one good review or referral, it is difficult to get a hold of them or you have to follow up multiple times, which is not my thing if I am paying them. They only take the job if it is big enough. But again I explained the job clearly on the phone. So I guess he is doing good and pretty busy, good luck. I ended up working with a south side contractor, I actually found the guys while driving around and walked into the construction site, talked to them right there. Sometimes this is the best approach. Just grab them in Homedepot or walk into a home where you see people doing work, works better than Yelp:) read more

I should have written this review earlier but I was preoccupied with a newborn. We had work done in April of 2017 to close off the loft portion of our second bedroom to turn the bedroom into a nursery. Lorenzo was very professional and courteous, did an amazing job. My son came a bit earlier than expected, Lorenzo did his best to get everything completed beforehand. Tom came and completed the last minute touches and did such a great job. Yelp comes through again. We were fortunate enough to purchase a new home and we wanted to do a complete gut in the kitchen. I originally had Lorenzo at our previous home to do some bathroom renovations but we decided against it. Luckily we kept his info close because shortly after, we closed. First impressions are a big indicator in my book when it comes to contractors. At both appointments, he showed up promptly. He took a look at the scope of the work and then he wanted to get a feel for what was on our wish list. My family has been through two major renos in two separate homes so we are comfortable with the idea that there has to be a general target budget for a contractor. We explained what we wanted vs. what we needed. He gave us an immediate idea as to what we should expect to spend based on the scope of the work. I did quite a bit of research to find out what a project like ours would cost and scoured the forums that were available. His numbers were very much in line with what we thought which was a plus. We had a handful of meetings to get all the details ironed out--this included meeting with a designer (from Seigle's in Lincoln park, Mary Garst is fantastic), and a few more for measurements and to spitball any last minute ideas. They got right to work and his crew moved fast, especially with the gut. One of the best things about Lorenzo is his ability to walk you through every stage. He explained everything in detail about what was involved, what they needed to do, any added cost and certainly how to get around any problems they encountered. The biggest issue we had was when we took out a wall separating the dining/kitchen area. We had two of our forced air feeds that led to the upstairs in that wall and it was a pain to get around. I will tell you that Lorenzo has "a guy" for everything. They came in, looked at it and sewed it up the next day. Added cost yes but to avoid a delay on the finished product was worth it--also, we went into the reno knowing that you have to assume an added 10% for the unexpected. He also gave me a great referral for carpeting for two floors in our house ( I had three quotes and it wasn't close as far as quality and price). We also threw a wrench into the plan about a week in--we wanted to gut a second floor bathroom. So now we are knee deep in two huge projects. He had half his crew work on the bathroom specifically so we could start moving things into the 2nd floor earlier. The other half obviously worked the kitchen. The best (and worst part for me mentally) was tile choice: My wife and I wanted to get tile from Tile Outlet to save because we had done it before and it worked out. The problem is that my wife teaches and is also a student so she had no time to sit in a store and browse for hours. I had to relay everything and take pictures which never does any justice to actuality. We (Lorenzo and I) made five trips to three different places to look, and over the course of two weeks. We couldn't make up our mind and each time Lorenzo told me not to choose until we knew it was right. He took all the pressure off and we are really grateful because we got a finished product that we wanted, knowing we will be living with it for a long time. He never rushed me and always told me the most important thing was to make wifey happy. Truer words have never been spoken. We finished both projects in a little over eight weeks, that is after two cabinets were the wrong fit so we had to wait for those to finish. In the end, we have our dream kitchen and an amazing bathroom complete with rain shower and floating vanity. Our kitchen is higher end but not crazy (before and afters provided). We are thankful to have found Archetype design on yelp. There is a clear reason why they have perfect ratings. We would recommend to anyone looking to do reno, regardless of what the scope is. We reached out to Lorenzo to get a quote on a kitchen remodel; Lorenzo got back to us right away and was accommodating on when he was able to come out and quote the job. Lorenzo was solution oriented and had great ideas on how to remodel the kitchen based on our wants / needs. Lorenzo and team were great and responsive to scheduling times and answering additional requests / questions. The work was completed on time and within scope and when something did go out of budget - they were quick to let us know the cost impact and our options. We had one hangup with the lights (outside of anyone's control) but he was very responsive and we found a work around that kept us happy and on budget. Tom was the man - he was great to work with explaining the process and options, great work and professional. The team handled new counters, sink & faucet, lighting and back splash - it looks like a new kitchen and we were glad to work with someone we trusted and provided quality work. What we appreciated was Lorenzo and team are capable to handle any job but are also able to offer advice and options on how to complete the job as well - so when we were not sure on models or materials, they were quick to offer multiple suggestions and advice. I had called Archetype Design and Construction when my heat had gone out during a few days of really cold weather. They had come the same day, when they said they would come and also knew immediately what the issue was. Unfortunately, b/c I have an outdated furnace, he did not have the product available in his truck to fix the situation. He had promised he would come out first thing the following morning, with the part along with other parts that would help my furnace work better. He arrived as promised and he was able to fix my furnace within 10 minutes on top of the additional fixes we discussed. My place was warmed up within seconds and my furnace is so much quieter that I don't even need to turn up the volume on my tv any longer. I can't believe I was living like this for 10 years, but thanks to Archetype Design, it has made my living twice as better. With the added baggage of having an interior design background and severely picky creative mindset, the search was on for the perfect contractor to lead the brigade. We were so fortunate to have found Lorenzo and his skilled team of leaders and craftsmen. Having a basic idea of what we wanted, we really relied on Lorenzo and his team to find and offer solutions to our wish list. If you have the chance to hire him hurry up and do it because the guy is going to be booked for the next few years for sure. We recently hired Lorenzo/Archetype to close off a third bedroom (installing pocket doors and big closets) in our West Loop condo, and we could not be more pleased with our experience. As renovation newbies, Lorenzo helped us at every step along the way. He provided helpful design suggestions and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable and happy at each decision point. I also appreciated his professionalism in working with the property manager of our condo association to make sure the project adhered to the condo association rules. Lorenzo's crew finished most of the job while we were on a vacation. They did a wonderful job, were very attentive to detail, and kept construction dust to a bare minimum. Lorenzo and team were great to work with from the beginning on my bathroom renovation project. He was prompt to arrive for all meetings, came prepared, and was always readily available via phone, email or text. Once the work started, his crew (Tom and Jose) were professional and great at the work they completed. Every night before they left they would clean up the whole working area, put all the tools away inside the bathroom, and zip up the dust protection cover on the door. It's like they were never even there! They were flexible and worked with me through some delays in material arrival and made good use of the time they spent in my condo. Lorenzo and his team were great to work with, any questions I had were answered promptly. The "guys" were all friendly and helpful and tried to keep dirt and dust to a minimum. They were always there when they said they would be. My kitchen is totally updated and it has made some of my neighbors jealous. GOODBYE 1990s!! To be clear, honest and not confuse anybody: We didn't have any work done by Archetype but only an initial consultation on a kitchen remodel that we were looking to do. Lorenzo came over and was really nice, polite and seemed to know what he was talking about. We had preliminary drawings done by a friend of ours, so we showed Lorenzo the ideas we had and that we'd welcome any feedback from him. He gave us his ideas after spending about an hour at our house and told us we'd hear from him in about a week. 10 days went by and after not hearing from him I emailed Lorenzo asking him if he was still interested on the job. He emailed back a proposal with very little details and this really high total price for the job! Part of this job requires removing a load bearing wall and he didn't even have an architect come over our house to look at things! Neither did he provide us with any samples or drawings of what the cabinets would look like! What kind of person would sign a contract like this? read more

I read so many good reviews about this guy, however, I called him and informed him that I had a big rehab project, he stated he was busy and would have to go grab a pen and paper to take down my info and would call me back, I am STILL wanting for the call back. I feel that if a company wants to do business with a potential customer, the customer should not have to run after them and constantly call. No business here! read more
