A hellish move The first sign of trouble ahead is when the moving crew arrived on the wrong day. Apparently there was a mix up with another move! On moving day seven crew members arrived after 10 AM. There was some delay because of the snow. There were three younger men and two older men, one of whom was the supervisor. There were three boss also made a guest appearance for about two hours. He supervised for a bit and then helped pack some of the tableware. After that he disappeared for the rest of the moving operation, much to the chagrin of the supervisor. The other older man's job was to pack tableware and wall hangings. He did a good job of packing but was slow as molasses. The otters moved the furniture and boxes. What surprised was that none of the crew wore forearm straps, shoulder harnesses or lumbar support for moving the heavy furniture. When the bed frames, dresser and cabinets were dismantled there did seem to a proper method to the process. The was no labeling system. Screws, bolts and furniture parts were randomly taped together, some went in zip lock bags and some bolts and nuts were in someone's jacket pocket! Moving the heavy furniture proved to be disaster. It just wasn't a polished operation. Navigating the staircase with heavy cabinets was nerve wracking to witness. It was as if some random persons came from the street to do the job. The supervisor did give directions to the younger members but when he said right they moved left and at one point the supervisor's hand was pinned against the wall. He stumbled down the stairs with a howl. For a heart stopping moment I thought he would fall and have a serious injury. He got away with a bruise but he was out of commission for a couple of hours. At the end of the day only half the items were loaded in one truck. The rest were stacked in the garage and scattered throughout the house. The whole move had descended to the level of a clown show. By the time the truck left Muncie it was late in the day. We arrived in Fishers well after dark. By the time the truck was unloaded and items placed in the appropriate rooms it was close to 11 PM. So there was not time to reassemble anything. My wife and I just slept on a mattress placed on the floor. That was the end of day 1; this was supposed to be a one day move. Day 2 One truck arrived past 10 AM with three young crew members, one of whom was new. No supervisor, no boss. It took all day to load the rest of the stuff in the truck. By the time the time truck was unloaded and furniture reassembled, in our new house, it was well past 11 PM. The person who disassembled a lot of the furniture was not present on day 2, so reassembly occurred by trial and error! The fact that nothing was labeled further impeded the progress. They could not figure out where some bed frame components should go so they were left in a heap. During the move one master bed frame post was broken and the glass on one side of our beautiful curio cabinet was broken. Some protective cover pieces for the dining table went missing. I was told that a carpenter would be sent to repair all damages, at no cost. It's been 8 weeks since the move but no such person has called or showed up. Several phone calls to the moving company went unanswered. There were no clear instructions about providing meals. I assumed that the crew were provided for. It was only when one of the members expressed hunger, that I realized they were no food arrangements for them. I rushed to MacDonalds and Taco Bell to bring lunch for them. Henceforth we provided meals for the entire operation. It's a shame that they provided such poor service. I really wanted to support a local company, but I will always rue that decision. This was supposed to be professional moving job but it was more like a fly-by-night cowboy operation. If you have a small move, you might be okay with this company but for a big move look elsewhere. Horrible experience with this company. The owner was rude and very unprofessional. We used them for a residential move that was not finished. I mean who moves the tv stand and leaves the tv or doesn't take things off the walls? The owner blamed us because we didn't tell them what needed to go! You pack everything when you hire a mover to do the job. The used 2 trucks and 4 guys and still took them till 8 pm. Stay as far away from this company as you can. read more

So impressed! Just today, three men worked as a team to move a very heavy piano from a church basement. The space was extremely cramped and not very well lit. They were very conscientious about covering and protecting this instrument. My dream was in their hands. They did not rush the job, were very polite and professional. This piano will be a permanent fixture in our home. They even moved an antique chair to my upstairs, which I was unable to do. Hats off to all three of these individuals, you all deserve a raise!! read more

I contacted Hardesty Movers out of Muncie, IN to give me a moving quote from Richmond to Indianapolis. The quote was given by its owner, former basketball player, Rickie Caldwell, who since his teen years has been working for this company. It's a tender story to listen to, and Mr. Caldwell is very mannerly and helpful when he is estimating. Now the estimate: I was quoted on 26,000 pounds of freight and 300 boxes an hourly figure of $165 + $100 fuel fee starting from leaving the warehouse to destination. Mr. Caldwell had inflated the numbers so his estimate would sound very affordable in comparison to the other estimates I had received. It would take 20 hours, a 5 man crew, and 2 day service. The load was to spend the night in Muncie and delivered to the destination the next day. The crew consisted of 5 men on the first day, and six men on the 2nd day. The 2nd day's crew was unsupervised by the owner of the company. I will say the loading day went fairly well with few issues. I did notice, however, that as soon as the owner left the premises two of the workers were no longer doing what I was asking them to do or becoming argumentative about my requests. Delivery was late the 2nd day because of the early morning rain, which was a good thing as it stopped raining about the time they arrived 2 hours later. My issue with this move was that there was no one in charge, except for one worker who was the mouthy one, complaining about how tired he was and how much he was hurting as he jostled my furniture about, which I saw various times. I had antique furniture which they managed to destroy, nick, and/or obliterate. Most of the damage was hidden from me, as I kept finding pieces or piles of furniture pieces hidden in the garage among the boxes. No one said a word about the broken items. To wit, here's the list to date: 1. Victorian shelf with tiles - - - one column broken, shelf off 2. Victorian shelf for the Royal Bayreuth porcelain, obliterated 3. Gold whippet statue in the entrance, broken in half 4. Victorian music stand, the little balls on top shelf, broken off and put in a little pile in the garage 5. Victorian tilt table, table legs/support destroyed. 6. Armoire - - - corner on the upper crown missing 7. Oak buffet on third floor of old house, moulding missing, I picked it up from the floor and gave it to the owner of the moving company. He has no idea what he did with it. 8. English deco armoire, leg broken off 9. Thonet bentwood hall tree, nicked midway stem 10. Dining room chairs, scratched and rubbed against each other, leaving all kinds of marks 11. Thonet screen, hole left in one cane screen due to a finger pressing through the weave Upon presentation of the final bill, which was over $389 over the estimate, I deducted the overage from the final invoice until they would make good on the repairs of the above. He said he had a repair man in Muncie, but the man couldn't get to it for another 30 days, I was told later. Mover had one employee that was especially bad, boisterous, complaining of being tired, knocking furniture about, and bossing the others. I did find beer bottles in the back of the house. I am sure it didn't help his moving maneuvers. In all fairness, three of the workers were very helpful, John, the older gentleman and Jerry, the younger one, were exceptionally helpful. Mr. Caldwell called the same complaining worker that he would deliver the rest of the stuff the next day. I called Mr. Caldwell and asked him to finish the move that same day, as he had to come to address some of the damage. Since then I have been calling the owner of the company, who told me they were cleaning the truck out and the two pieces from the armoire and the buffet would show up. He kept putting me off, when I reminded him that it had been several days that they had been cleaning the truck, he went off on me, screaming and yelling, and hung up on me. My only remedy is to seek recourse via the websites and through Angie's List. In summary, if you are moving boxes and no fragile stuff, i.e., antique furniture of any kind, you might use them for a lower price, but if you are, in the end you will be eating your savings through repair work on your stuff, not to mention that repaired antique pieces lose half their value. Unsupervised the crew of workers is not working at optimum efficiency since one of them is affecting the others. And, lastly, being screamed on the phone about rickety furniture and having to put up with my deduction, (mostly that he vociferated about) and not allowing me to respond and hanging up on me is most uncivilized. I wish I had contracted Stuart's Moving in Indianapolis as I had done many times in the past, for they really care about their reputation and know what they are doing. I suppose if you want cheap, you get what you pay for, and a lot more in the end as the repair bills start mounting. Mr. Caldwell asked me w if I would hire him again. NEVERMORE!!!!! read more

This move was the second time I have used Hardesty Moving & Storage. From the initial inquiry via phone, to the setting up the move, to the confirmation, and ultimately the end result all were professional, pleasant, friendly. Mr Caldwell stopped by my apt during the loading to say hello. The movers arrived within 10 minutes of the scheduled time, loaded, drove to the new destination and unloaded within a reasonable time frame. The cost was what was quoted in the initial inquiry.
