If I could give zero stars I would. The receptionist do not pick up the phone, you have to call multiple times for you to get a hold of someone and the answers are never consistent. RUDE STAFF. They use old cars. The older man who works the front doesn't care about the problem you tell him. All of the incompetence I could handle BUT the situation that really topped it all was when I came to my road test at 7am, an appointment I confirmed THREE times and I had the proof that I confirmed, was cancelled. When I asked the older man why was it canceled he just shrugged his shoulders and said I don't know. Unacceptable, he called the owner to get the situation sorted because I was HIGHLY upset. The day of my road test finally comes and me along with everyone else I was with FAILED TAKE YOUR MONEY ELSE WHERE They really need a better system for scheduling, answering questions and dealing the situations. read more

Very Un Organized My mom signed me up for lessons 4 mounts ago The rushed and signed me up for all of my driving lessons at once One afternoon I walked in to inquire about the time date of my driving exam only to find out you done get the exam unless you take the 5hr class, which the signed me up for After MY LESSONS I told the I want my final 2 lessons the week of my driving test So after the 5hr class I would call and ask "when is my driving test ?" The told me "we have to wait till the dnv contact us . So after these months of call and asking when no answer I decide to go with another company . I walk in Friday looking for answers to my questions or a refund . I receive a call from my mom saturday saying that the driving school call her to confirm my driving exam . So I call them my self How do I suddenly have a driving exam this Tuesday ? When I've been calling , walking in asking ? The woman over the phone told me in this exact words "who ever you spoke to was supposed to look in the system and no one ever did ." So I asked are you admitting no one did they job ? The whole process ended up costing me more because I had to go with a second company more organized and with better communication . This driving school is horrible. Please for the love of god go to any other driving school. Do not ignore the bad reviews like I did. Just go to any other school even if it is in a different borough. The office workers are nice but the instructors are the most rude and disrespectful people I have ever had the misfortune of dealing with. One of the driving instructors was so nasty and rude to me during the lesson and even threatened to end the lesson early because I was having trouble with a certain skill on the road. This driving school may be helpful for people who already have driving experience so if you are a brand new driver like I was this place is definitely not for you. I DO NOT recommend coming to this school, I it was a waste of my time as a new driver. I'm a woman, and most of my instructors were males, they flirted with me in the car Which made me feel very uncomfortable, and one of the male instructors played music through my lessons; When I ask him to turn it off, he just turned it down than proceeded to ask me about my personal life which made me feel even more comfortable. Told the young woman Maryam in the office about my experience and told her I wanted my money back for at least two lessons as I booked five, she tried to convince me that I couldn't get a refund and she didn't have any sincerity for what I just experience. I already had a driving license and had been driving 20 years in France, but when I moved to NYC I had to start all over again for a NYS driving license. Although annoying, the process was very easy. First I had to take the written exam at the DMV. I used the DMV app to study everything on my phone and also read the DMV workbook material once. I passed the test on Aug 27 at East Harlem DMV. Go early, the test and registration will be done in 15 min but the wait can be very long to then pay for the learner permit (2 hours). Once I had the learner permit I signed up for the 5h pre licensing class at Harlem Driving School because it is right in my neighborhood. They have such classes 3 or 4 times a week, I went on a Wednesday at 17:00 but you can do Monday and Saturday also. It was fine, but there was no AC (only fans) in the room when I was there on a hot and humid August evening. I then took 1 driving lesson (45 min) to get to know the car I would be using on road test day. The instructor gave me great tips about the exam. I decided to pay extra money to rush the road test appointment and passed it at the Bronx 233rd St location 5 days later. All in all the process took 25 days from the day I received my social security number to the day I passed the road test. License should come in the mail within 2-3 weeks. It was a good experience overall. On the day I took the road test all 4 students from Harlem driving school passed! read more

My experience here has been horrible and HOPEFULLY THIS REVIEW WILL WAKE UP THE OWNERS. The receipt never stated that a refund will result in future bookings with them to NEVER be able to book again. I was moving out the state and was unable to complete. Ive contacted their refund number line and email several times to reschedule my lessons with them, to which ALL HAVE BEEN IGNORED. $155 and they charged me $85 in FEES. Management does NOT Ever contact you back simply because they DO NOT CARE. MARTHA at the st nicholas location was the ONLY employee who said she will try to help the situation as I do have some time before I love to schedule the lessons and complete the rest of my package. I came to Harlem Driving School in the end of May to purchase a package deal. I chose 8 lessons with the 5 hour course and road test. This cost me over $400 which I paid up front. Before doing any lessons, I went to the St. Nicholas location to do the 5 hour course. The instructor was late and we were all standing outside almost 30 minutes before he arrived. They had us in a FILTHY room. There were ants coming out of the walls, huge flies buzzing, and I even saw a few roaches, one which ran over the girl in front of me's foot. I was terrified the whole time and paranoid that a bug had crawled into my bag and I would bring it home. After it was over, they told me they would hold into my certificate until I was done with my lessons. I had never driven before in my life. The lessons at Lenox location were fair enough, we left and came back right on schedule each time. However, one female instructor who I went out with twice was texting the entire time on her phone, reaching into her bag to pull out snack including chips and tamales, eating them loudly, spritzing body spray on herself, etc. She was not paying attention at all or giving pointers except occasionally to tell me to make a turn. It was very unprofessional and a waste of my time. The next trouble came in with this place's lack of organization. My lessons were so spaced out that it felt pointless. I definitely learned a lot, but it was not effective at all because the lessons were weeks apart. After 4 spaced out lessons, I had a month in between the last 4 which were crammed in two double sessions over two consecutive days. After completing my lessons, I came to the Lenox location to ask about scheduling my road test. They said they would need my certificate to schedule it. I told them that the school had it. It seemed that they had no communication with the other location.. and could not get the certificate from them? I had to walk back to St. Nick's to get my certificate, then walk back to Lenox and give it to them. They then told me that they had already put in a request to the DMV for my road test when I first came to them in May (2 months ago at that point). They told me ti just wait til they call me for the test and that it could be a while because the DMV was backed up. While it had already been 8 weeks, it seemed fair enough so I waited. In the beginning of August, I still had not heard from them so I called inquiring about an update for my road test. They told me there's no update, just wait, and HUNG UP on me. I called back and asked them to please check. The girl discovered that they had NEVER put in for my road test after 3 months. She told me she would do it the next day, as if it was a huge inconvenience to her that she was wrong. I cant believe they did not even check to make sure all the times I asked. They wasted months of time being unorganized. This was the $400 service I paid for? Finally on September 4, I received a text from someone at the school telling me my test would be on Tuesday 09/09. Tuesday was the 8th. I did not know whether the test would be on Tuesday the 8th or Wednesday the 9th due to the error in the message. No one responded to my message. Finally, I got someone on the phone and was told it would be Wednesday. I did not even trust that answer and was worried they had made another mistake. Anyways, I showed up for the test on Wednesday at 12 as instructed and we went to the DMV. The guy who took us was very nice and explaining everything to us. I did not feel confident for the test at all because it had been 2 months since I had done a lesson, and have no other way to practice. Me and all other students with us that day failed. I feel that Harlem Driving School is to blame because they forgot to schedule my test for months and did not provide a seamless well planned experience. They should get your test date, then schedule lessons closer to that time. I have to take off another day from work to retake the test, and have no idea how I will practice. This place has great prices that's literally the only thing nice I can say the customer service sucks they literally charge you for all their mistakes they don't know how to schedule people so you pay a cheap price for your package but then by the time your done paying for all their mistakes it becomes expensive they don't have nothing in order you call them they always say they going to call you back and they don't they put you with a different driver every time you go for a class so things is different every-time I would not recommend this place to anyone read more

I attended Harlem Driving School last summer. 10 Lessons, 7 instructors, and a failed road test later, I left there with my head low and my hopes high. Cons: 1. Testing is in the Bronx. If you're not taking lessons in the Bronx, then depending on the site, taking your road test there can be daunting, confusing, and intimidating. 2. Un-standardized instructional material or practices. Each instructor had a different way of doing things. Some of their tips and advice conflicted with one another. 3. Car(s)- the car I used for my road test had a busted transmission which would have been nice to know before parallel parking. read more

I took a few courses with this school and thought it was just okay and a cheap price. The 5-hour class was a lot better than expected. Learned a lot but the class was held on the hottest day of the summer with no AC. The instructors are pretty strange and vary in personalities and temperaments. I think the best instructor is a lady (forgot her name, Ebony maybe?) but she isn't available most of the time. Actually, it is pretty hard to get a good time slot here, as they fill up pretty quickly. I took the road test with them and failed but the worst part is that they take you up in a group so you have to wait until everyone else is done to go back unless you find the public transportation on your own or take a very expensive Uber back into Manhattan. Since then, I ended up going to a more expensive school and passing with them. You definitely get what you pay for... read more

I went in to take my road test and I was told 30 min after waiting that I was scheduled to take the test a month later this is after the fact that I showed them proof of the appointment confirmation that they sent me. They are horrible, and the drivers will not teach you what you need to know. They don't answer the phones so good luck trying to reach them for any reason. I purchased 5 lessons and 5 hour class w road test with them. Sal and Juan are great! They really teach you and make you feel comfortable. They will not let you take the road test if u aren't ready! There is one woman who is kind of tall, dark toned and mid length hair she has the worst attitude ever! I was coming for my first lesson and was already checked in with, she waited 20 minutes to try and "check me in" she asked my name about 3 times, asked if I had an appointment gave me a clip board and said sign here, the picture on the bottom didn't look like me. I am looking at her like um okay and than she asked again, what is your name I told her the guy with glasses gave me the proper sheet to sign my name after all of that -_____-. Than I forgot I was scheduled a lesson today, so I call and try to reschedule which is NOT canceling, same woman continuously telling me a fee of $10.00 would be charged, I'm like okay sooo can I pay when I have my next lesson because clearly I can't make my appointment today. I just don't understand how rude someone can be over the phone, she made it her business to TELL ME...."I just had to let you know the fee" okay lady I freaking heard you 3 times but still tell me how rescheduling and canceling is the same thing, plus I called hourssss before my appointment time. The one good thing I can say is there is this older African American male who is an amazing instructor, patient and kind and very respectful. I strongly recommend going to a different driving school. Due to Covid, I had to cancel 3 of the 4 driving lessons I paid for. Before I had a chance to reschedule them, the school had gone ahead and set up my driving test for me. I asked them explicitly if I could resume my three lessons if I did not pass my test and they assured me I did. When I went back to get those set up, after failing the road test, they said it wasn't possible. I pushed back and they had me call the owner /manager who never got back to me. All along, they were rude, poor communicators, and this doesn't even cover the issues I had along the way. There was no policy to refer to and each person had their own idea about what was ok or not. On top of that, not long after that I saw a student and teacher in my me of the driving school's cars. When they took too long to move when the light turned gteen, a car behind them honked rudely. Instead of just proceeding, the instructor stopped the student from driving and waited out the back car, merely out of spite. Not a particularly good driving lesson if you ask me. This has been the worst experience for me. I paid for the 10 class and a road test. After finishing all my lessons and my five hour class I was told my road test will be scheduled 2-4 weeks from that date. Which was in May. July came around two months later more than enough time for a road test to be scheduled. I called to find out the progress I was told there was no record of my payment for the lessons(mind you if I didn't pay for the lesson You guys still had me complete all 10 classes.. did that not strike you as strange since I didn't pay for them) I had to bring a receipt of my payment. The lady made a copy and told me that they would schedule me as soon as possible. It's now august still have not gotten a call and that's a month ago. I called once again told the rep what I've been going through she said there was no indication that I signed up for lessons, she can't find my record and that she was going to look into it and call me back in 10mins. I waited all day and nothing. Ok now it's September 5th I called this morning spoke to a different rep!! She tells me not only does it show I didn't complete my 5hr class but that my learner permit is not on file. WTF!!!! I'm F&@ing fuming at this point it's been 4 months and I have not gotten my road test. I've called, I've gone to the school and at no time did anyone think to tell me none of this info is on file. 4months!!! I would never recommend anyone here and I have plenty of friends who are looking for a driving school I would never tell them to go here and when I go in tomorrow to once again drop all of these documentations off I'll need to speak with the manager on the type of ppl he has working for him. I would say this school has great teachers,I will not say how many times I tried for my license(at other schools) lol.I found this place after hearing my nephew recieved his license from them.I took 5 lessons at first and failed because of my turns,braking.I went back a month later a took 3 just to feel more confident.while learning I felt very confident and the teachers Dorian,jose,kevin taught me well.I passed on 2nd try with this school.I reccomend this school to anyone,I want to thank them truly.They are not pushy,lazy, never stopped for personal business or just sat and talk.It was all about getting you your license. read more

Communication with the office staff is horrible.. you pay for a service and they do not accommodate your request for specific drivers.. they book appointments incorrectly...they do not give you highway lessons like other driving schools do.. they tell you have to get your license and then pay separately to do the highway lesson. I have had 4 different drivers give me lessons..each instructor gave there own way of driving so sometimes it's confusing on which way is the right way.. I ask them if I could have one driver and it didn't happen..the driving instructors are good but it's just not worth the headache.. I would never recommend this place to anyone.. read more

Sad to report that although my driving instructor was fantastic, the 5-Hour licensing course is a joke. I was told that I should be there at 8:00am and that class would last until 1:00pm (on a Saturday.) I arrived at 8:00am sharp and was told to sit down. The instructor proceeded to hand me a bunch of booklets filled with news articles about sexual offenders and drunks. After skimming through a couple of the articles, I asked him how this had anything to do with driving. He brushed me off saying that we'd have to wait until all of the other students arrived as he did not feel like repeating himself. He was completely rude and clearly made it clear he wasn't going to give me any further information until everyone had arrived. Come 9:00am, the course instructor proceeds to tell everyone that the class will start in a few minutes and it will now last until 2:00pm. Anyone who isn't okay with this should pick up their permit and leave! As I was not able to stay past 1pm, this ended up being a complete waste of my time. Thankfully I was able to get a refund for the class as I will most certainly not be returning to this school. NO one seems to know who is in charge, none of the employees communicate with one another. The course instructor could care less that I was given false information and was not in the least bit apologetic or accommodating. My experience was cool. Ya were professional. 1 piece of advice, try to pair the student driver with the same person each time. I say this because I have had a different instructor for each of my lessons and it is confusing because each instructor drives differently. i would do something one instructor told me with a different instructor and i would be tool not to do that. The driving instructors may very well be great, but the 5-hour course instructor is NOT! He was rude and nasty for absolutely no reason. The manager Sal tried to make it better, but the damage was already done. On top of that, the communication at this school is f*cking ridiculous. When you call, you might get the Harlem location, you might get the Bronx location. What the hell?? Why don't you have two phone numbers?! When I tell you guys that this is the best driving school in Manhattan because it is . I had a package with 10 lessons which include the car , appointment etc. My instructor was Alsenio and he was the best instructor at the school. He explains very well and prepares you of exactly what is going to be on the road test. If you have a question he will answer as many times as you want to know. Parking was my difficulty and we kept practicing until it was perfect. The staff is so nice and responsible. I would recommend to anyone that is a new driver. I passed my driving test with flying colors and even got a compliment from the examiner. Thanks again . read more

A very small but straight to the point driving school. Ive been putting off taking my test for some time and this was a great place to begin practicing again. I was able to get a lesson scheduled quickly, my instructor was online and I felt great after my lesson was finished. If anyone is looking for the best driving school with the best driving school instructor, I highly recommend that you go to Harlem driving school in the Bronx and ask for Katelyn the driving instructor .. trust me you wouldn't want to go to anyone else other then her ..I started my lessons in September because my permit was about to expire November 7th ..with very very little driving experience by the time I got to my 3rd -4th lesson Katelyn had me driving like I had yrs of experience under my belt.. she also help me to perfect my parallel parking and 3 point turns .. after only taking lessons for ( 1 MONTH ) I passed my road test October 24th 2019 .. Having my drivers license has ALWAYS Been a goal of mines but for some reason, I Never thought It would ever Happen to me especially in a short amount of time, but It did! Worst driving school ever. I paid for an 8 lesson package. Took me 1 month to get a 5 hour class which was shit. Then I was scheduled for one driving lesson. After that Every time I called to schedule a driving lesson I would be told the driving instructor was not there for a month. Which was a lie because I've seen other students taking their lessons. I had enough of the b.s, and decided one day to go in for a refund. The lady who works there was extremely rude and disrespectful. I paid $190 for my lessons and I had already taken a 5 hour class and 1 lesson so that was -$90 deducted from the balance. So the balance then goes down to $100. So get this $100 minus a 10% discount for cancellation fee and i'm left with $90. They then told me that my refund would be $81. How the hell do I go from $90 to $81. Please. I know i'm bad at math but that right there does not make any sense at all. Worst driving school ever. Do not do it to yourself at all ! So unorganized and rude staff. read more

Excellent driving school ! I recommend it to everyone. I was referred by the manager Mr Sall. I took package number 4 which is 5h class, 3 lessons: each 45 mns and a road test appointment. My first lesson didn't go well since my instructor Mr B. was not in a good mood. So, Mr Sall re-scheduled the lesson with an other instructor Mr Price who is excellent and very professional.Mr Jose also is good. They show me all the details in order to pass the road test. I purchased a package of 5 lessons, 5 hour class & car for road test. Harlem Driving School is not only unorganized but very unprofessional. I am only giving one star for my instructor Roberto who was very professional and a great teacher. After completing my 5 hour class which was on June 24th, I called to have Harlem Driving School Schedule my Road Test. I was told I would be given a call back but never received a phone call so i called again later in the week just to be told it takes 2-4 weeks for me to get the date for my road test which didn't sound right. After calling continuously to make sure the road test was scheduled I spoke to multiple people and each time was told something different. I decided to go to the DMV myself, I got the phone number and scheduled my own road test. It literally took 2 mins with the automated service. When i called Harlem driving school to ask why is it that i have been waiting over two weeks to find out my road test was never scheduled and having to schedule it myself, I was put on hold multiple times and was never given a answer. I then asked them to make sure the car will be available for the road test, again had to call multiple times and finally got an answer from Beatriz who did not have any record of my purchase, telling me i have to pay for the car which i then had to explain to her that i paid for the package which includes the car. She then let me know that even though my road test was at 11am I would have to be at the driving school by 7:30am to then get escorted by one of the instructors and other people taking the test the same day (again something i never heard before). So much time was killed that my Road Test was August 28th, over 2 months after taking my 5 hour class. On the day of my road test I decided not to meet at Harlem Driving School as I lived closer to the Road Test Site and it didn't make sense for me to go downtown just to go back uptown. I made sure i told Beatriz to let the instructor know so that no one would be waiting for me. I received a phone call while i was on my way to the site and a gentleman by the name of Sal told me that I was not allowed to travel to the site on my own and that i would automatically FAIL if I showed up at the site without the instructor. I responded letting him know this was something I've never heard of before and didn't understand how i would Fail if I was simply going to contact the driver when i arrived at the site and meet him there, he then proceeded to tell me "WHEN YOU FAIL, DONT COME BACK HERE"...(SMH TOTALLY UNPROFESSIONAL). I am so happy I did not go to Harlem Driving school that morning but instead met them at the Road Test site because there were 4 people in the car when i arrived leaving me no room, I literally would've been sitting squeezed in between two guys in the back seat of the car. Which then proceeded to me standing outside waiting for hours until it was my time. Luckily there was a Park on the corner where i sat on the bench until time passed. After the first two people completed the road test I was invited to sit in the car for the last hour before it was my turn. Luckily I PASSED! (haha Mr.Sal :p ) and will not have to deal with Harlem Driving School ever again. I do not recommend anyone to go to a school where you're told you'll FAIL. Horrible customer service. I wouldn't say its worth the price. And will definitely say I passed because of the practice I had outside of the school in between the two months that past while I waited to take the road test. read more
