The regular bi-weekly Thursday night auctions, as well as the scheduled estate sales, always have a rollicking mix of items.... all jumbled together. A Chippendale chair might be auctioned just before or just after a pair of old golf shoes. You just never know! I'll bet there's not a lot that the Masseys haven't sold over the years! With the recent scandals at Ivey-Selkirk, it's hard to find a good auction house in the area, but the Masseys are doing a great job of picking up the slack without taking the fun out of their jobs. They like the upscale estates, but aren't averse to selling old farm equipment or store liquidations, either -- they just good-naturedly tackle the job at hand, and put on a really good show while doing so. The audiences are a hoot, too. You see a LOT of local antique dealers looking for bargains, lots of toothless Fagin types and hairy ZZ Top wannabes, and everything in between. Doesn't matter who you are or what you look like, though, because the Masseys like everyone, whether you're a bargain-hunter, an antique dealer, or an upscale collector, and they make it a point to entertain. Even if you aren't buying anything, it's fun just to watch the sale! That said, I've gotten a lot of magnificent pieces of furniture at Massey Auctions; some of it just reasonable and some of it for a song. I've also gotten caught up in the fun and gone home with a few nonsensical impulse buys, but that's one of the hazards of going. Don't go to one of the Thursday night auctions expecting Sotheby's. These are rapid-turnaround events held at the Maplewood American Legion Hall ... but just because the venue isn't tony doesn't mean there's nothing good for sale! The Masseys are honest, too, so if something is a reproduction, they will say so right from the outset, or if they aren't sure of the provenance of an item, they'll tell you that too. Come prepared, because the sales are cash- or check-only. You should go! You'll have a great time!

The shipping company is well known for its 1-star reviews, but Patricia Doyle's company still uses them. They sent my order, which included over $600.00 of collectible ephemera, in a weak-sided, used Pamper box with no protection. The box was stuffed with USPS priority mail boxes (which is highly illegal btw), and it arrived with missing items and damaged product. The Doyle company was told and refused to respond. This company does okay with auctions but is a failure with shipping as long as they use a 1-star company that does disastrous packing and shipping. The "Shipping Pros in Chatam, Illinois." Please have anyone but the shipping pros (which they certainly are not) ship anything for you. Please take a look at their profile; you won't regret it. Patricia Doyle refused to respond and allowed this company to continue representing them. I can't imagine any successful company partnering with such a disreputable packing serice (in my opinion) to ship and represent for them.

The store seems to specialize in glassware, ceramics, crystal, china, and other household items - but there are also toys, games, model trains, Disneyana, and even a beautiful Seeberg Jukebox waiting for their next proud owner! There's also some nice antique furniture, cabinets, chairs, bookcases and the like. No junk! Prices clearly marked! And the prices generally seemed pretty reasonable. And cabinets are unlocked so you can browse and select without needing to wait for the key!! I wish I could report that it was a good experience, but it was heartbreaking. I had searched for an auction house willing to take tools. Gary said he had experience and would handle it with care. I placed my trust in him and it was a mistake. His workers picked up Dad's tools then Gary did not return my calls or texts. I did not hear from him until I received a phone call stating everything had been sold and he wanted to know where to send the check. Below is what Gary promised he would do: Gary said he would give me an opportunity to place holds (minimum bids) on the expensive items. He did not. Gary said he understood I knew people who wanted the opportunity to buy Dad's tools. He was supposed to forward me the advertising for the auction so I could share it. He did not. To this day, I do not know when or where any auction occurred. When I last spoke to Gary, I reminded him of the promises he made and did not keep. His response was, "I'm sorry you are disappointed. I just need to know where to send the check." I could say a lot more about the frustration of my family as a result of this experience. However, I decided it would be better to simply share the facts about how Ahrens & Niemeir did business with us.
