Dress down, wear no jewelry and have a small cross body bag which you keep in front of you. Bring a shopping bag as Sympa's bags are flimsy and awkward to hold. Monoprix sells a great foldable bag at the counter for 1 euro. Go early, go often, and avoid Saturday. Happy shopping. If I am in Paris for a week I am at Sympa 3 times.

The store was huge and well stocked, with tons of clothing and accessories, as well as an enormous pharmacy and cosmetics area. I thought about picking up some Caudalie and La Roche-Posay products, which were very cheap, but decided against it to avoid checking my bag going home. Joke was one me when I had to check it anyway, and barely made my flight because I hadn't accounted for that extra chunk of time. Buying a bunch of French skincare would've saved me a little bit of stress. I did get a French nasal spray on the recommendation of my friend who lives in Paris. I bought it for my perpetually congested husband, who was home watching the kids. It was the only souvenir I brought him from my trip (though I did get a Diptyque candle for the house), and I actually used it first when I caught a cold last month. I can at least attest that it worked quite well. The Monoprix was bustling, but check-out was easy and quick. I left with my nasal spray, and my friend did get her black cardigan. If you're looking to score some well priced French products, this place is definitely worth checking out. And if you're on the fence about that Caudalie Beauty Elixir, just go ahead and treat yourself.

While malls die all over America, retail still thrives in Paris. Exhibit A: Galeries Lafayette Haussmann. I've been to this department store a number of times over the years, and I both enjoy it and fear how completely it can suck up precious vacation hours. It's a fantastic place to shop, with a ton of well curated inventory spread out across multiple floors in multiple buildings. The main building features that beautiful domed ceiling, which manages to catch me by surprise every time I walk in. I haven't had the opportunity to shop for my own clothes here in a long time, but I've gotten some really great stuff on the children's floor, and discovered the souvenir section on my last visit, where I picked up some cool Paris Metro toy trains and magnets. We did somehow get stuck at Galeries Lafayette for over two hours and ended up skipping Notre-Dame, which might have been a better place to spend our last afternoon in Paris. But it was sale season, and my kids look super cute in their heavily discounted Petit Bateau. Galeries Lafayette is busy and sometimes overwhelming, but it's a wonderful department store. I wish we had something like it back home. I'd much rather shop there than fall for targeted ads on Instagram.

The young woman who rang me up was delightful and offered to bubble wrap the two cups I bought for safe journey back to the States.
