Tried to call back after I got a call from a friend; It took forever to talk to someone and once I got to I was transferred immediately to someone super rude. She had so much attitude for no reason and kept talking over me. I also asked which hospital this was again just to double check and she told me she couldn't tell me, and kept very rudely telling me to call back at the call times. I went here a few years ago because I sadly was Withdrawing and hallucinating from pills and I was in such a bad state I was seeing and hearing things that weren't there and having nightmares and thinking they were real a group of staff kept throwing me to the ground and giving me shots to put me to sleep and then they'd drag and lock me in a room with just wall and floor and a camera for hours and hours to sleep on the cold hard floor with no blanket or anything and then they'd do it over and over and over and over again because I was hallucinating and like running up and down the hall lol i wasn't even being aggressive like they'd just give me shots over and over and then drag me to a empty room and leave me in there for hours and hours it was sooooo traumatizing and it was so cold in there cold showers it was dirty my bed when i got it had food and candy wrappers all next to the bed and the food was really bad they gave you a tray and you couldn't pick what you ate [[HIGHLIGHT]]it's really sad how they treat people in there[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] read more

My experience with HartGrove is this. Nothing to be proud about because your hospital is substandard. This is the second day my son has been home. He hasn't slept since he's been home. That was the first thing they told me they would fix. They sent him home with enough pills to last a weekend. No scripts no instructions. He is worse than when he got there. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Not one time did I meet with his doctors. Even when they discharged him.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] These cowards sent him home knowing he wasn't better. They lied and said wasn't sleeping at night. They said he was better. He is lying in bed stairing into space. Well unless he strolls around the house naked. They didn't care enough about my child to make a difference.This review actually mentions 3 hospitals. Out of the three Hartgrove is by far the worst. My son was sent to Alton Memorial hospital in t he has schizophrenia and was having a hard time we lost his sleep medication and he was in transition changing meds. We just moved back here from Missouri where we had guardianship over his medical. We did this to protect him. Many times the mentally ill are released to the streets without any loved ones knowing because of the Hippa Laws. They didn't know if our guardianship was valid in Illinois. He was in the emergency room about a month. They said none of the psychiatric hospitals would take him because he also had an Asperger's diagnosis. My son has an associate degree and was on the deans list. So I petitioned the court to make sure I also had guardianship in Illinois. I intended to go to Gateway Hospital in Granite City to convince them in taking him . Their denial was based on him being on the spectrum and was actually illegal. The judge told me my guardianship should have been excepted in the first place. Before I could put my plan in motion Alton Memorial had him sign papers to go to Hart Grove Hospital in Chicago. None of these hospitals would take him because he was on the spectrum but they had him sign papers sending him 4 hours away without notifying us. He was in such bad shape he didn't know what he was signing. They sent him to Hartgrove Hospital in Chicago. That place was a nightmare from the beginning. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I tried to call to talk to a nurse and check on him. They would not talk to me. I told the nurse I had Guardianship over his medical. The nurse said that's medical not mental and hung up on me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Alton Memorial said they sent copies of my guardianship papers several times. I sent them several times. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Each time I called these papers were not in his chart. I had to drive there with my sister and hand them the papers and insist they were put in his file.The only time you could visit was on Thursdays 6 to 8 pm. If he wanted to call it could only happen 12:pm or 8:30 pm.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] In the meantime they are changing his drugs every couple of days. Giving him shots to sleep. I asked about ECT. They didn't do it there but his doctor talked to another doctor who said it would benifit him. Only problem was the hospital that could do it would not take him. So after two months they said he was better. Sleeping though the night not delusional. They lied we went to pick him up my husband and I knew immediately this was going to be a long ride home. He was not is not better. If anything he is worse. So now after 3 months we are back at square one. All the places that are supposed to help don't. It boils down to this was a hard case that they didn't want to take on. So when you see the homeless mentality I'll people on the street keep this story in mind. See because of The Patient Rights Act that Reagan Started they can refuse treatment. The problem is this mentally ill people don't know they are mentally ill. When mentally ill people don't know they are ill, it is called anosognosia, a lack of insight or awareness of their condition. This is a symptom of serious mental illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and can make it difficult for them to seek or accept treatment. You have to petition the government to get treatment. For those who want less government get them out of the way of medical treatment. Get them out of the way of doctors and parents . My daughter was sent here in 2022, as it was the last bed available in the entire Chicago area. She has been in several, and this was the only one that had her crying. From the first day, she was crying and pleading to get her out. It took 5 days to get them to discharge her. She experienced severe trauma here. She did not tell us the nature of it until recently. This place looks like a prison and they treat patients worse than prisoners. I believe a lawsuit is in order. read more

If your relative is admitted to Hartgrove, and they are mentally healthy enough to be released, but you are having trouble getting them released, here are the steps I followed to get my relative released: 1. I had my relative request and sign a 5 day request to be released form. My relative requested this form when she arrived, but did not receive the form until two days later. 2. I called the Hartgrove main switchboard at 773-413-1700 and requested to be put through to the Patient Advocate hotline. This line is not answered by a person, but by a machine. I left a message as to why my relative should be released. I called and left twenty messages in one day to let them know I was serious. I received a call back the next day, and the Patient Advocate did listen to my concerns and did contact my relative's nurse practitioner and social worker. I believe this contact helped to secure my relative's release. 3. I called the nursing station on my relative's floor. This was the number my relative gave me so I could call them in the 12:30-1:30 call in hour. I asked the nurse who picked up the phone to text my relative's doctor/nurse practitioner and or social worker to call me. 4. In order for your relative to be released, the nurse practioner/doctor and social worker need to sign off on the release. Once I was informed that my relative would be released, I followed up. My relative informed me that the nurse practitioner had signed off, but not the social worker. I called the nursing station on my relative's floor and asked the nurse to text the social worker to call me. When the social worker called me, she was in a room with my relative signing off on her release. 5. Keep going. I did not give up and just kept trying until my relative was released. Here are the government agencies to contact and file complaint: Illinois Department of Public Health takes telephone complaints at 800 252 4343. Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation can be reached at 630 792 5800. Illinois DCFS child abuse complaint hotline is 800 252 2873. U.S. Attorney's Office for Eastern District of Pennsylvania is 215 861 8200 U.S. Office of Inspector General hotline 800-447-8477 Further, the Audit Committee of the parent company should be contacted including the SEC since Hartgrove's parent company is a pubic company.In 2020, Hartgrove's parent company, Universal Health Services paid a $127 million settlement to the U.S. Dept of Justice. It alleged violations involving medically unnecessary inpatient behavioral health services. See Press Release of U.S. Attorney's Office, E.D. Pa. dated 7/10/2020. A 2011 report of the University of Illinois at Chicago about Hargrove Hospital found multiple issues according to a September 28, 2011 Chicago Tribune article. My view is Hartgrove and UHS should be investigated again both by federal and state authorities given the recurrent complaints of the 371 google reviews which continue after its 2020 settlement with the federal government. Simply put, an argument can be made that Hartgrove should be shut down for failure to comply with the 2020 settlement. Hartgrove's parent company entered into a 40 page Corporate Integrity Program with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services which lasts until July 6, 2025. It is supposed to stop further fraudulent actions. The canned responses to the 371 google reviews tell people to "contact us" by going to Hartgrove's website. The "contact us" tab merely has links to medical records release form. The canned response is meaningless since it gives you the name of no human being to contact. Under the federal Corporate Integrity Agreement with parent company Universal Health Systems (UHS), UHS was supposed to create a mechanism for complaints. It has failed to effectively do so. Hartgrove should put a user friendly complaint contact form on their main web page so the monitor appointed by the federal government can know about the dozens of complaints since the 2020 federal settlement. The wrongful conduct continues as evidenced by 271 google reviews. However, the parent company has this online complaint portal which is difficult tp navigate: https://uhs.com/contact-us/ Patients who are still at Hartgrove Hospital and not satisfied should look into filing a grievance with their insurer, if they have one, and file a grievance asking for transfer to another hospital. read more

It has been a little over a year since my visit and I am still dealing with PTSD from their 'treatment'. 6 days of HELL. Three days of no toiletries, no food I could eat even though each meal I reminded them I was a vegetarian, bed bug infestations, and being forced to take medication because as a manager of the department said 'take the meds, attend group meetings, play the game or we will keep you longer.' Their groups were a joke. Even the person leading it would basically talk about whatever they wanted. I happened to be there when they were being 'audited' and watched as the staff hid things that were not allowed on the floor in closets, drawers, or wherever they could. I had overheard night shift talking about me and when I brought it up to one of the managers. She asked 'well did you go confront them?' Of course I didn't. And since I didn't know the names of the staff members and I asked her if she could look it up because I had the date and time it happened. To which she replied 'well i am not going to accuse anyone if you don't have names.' Hartgrove has made it very clear IT IS NOT OKAY TO NOT BE OKAY. This place is a shithole. Please get your records straight, people. Three phone calls with three people in a week over the correct contact information, which still isn't correct. As a previous patient in 2019, I can confirm that they heavily medicate the patients, I was put on a large dose of Lexapro and was so sick and dizzy and shaking. The psychiatrist was only available to meet once a week, the therapist was available once and the medical doctor was doing most of the work because people were getting sick off of the food. The social worker was only available once you were set up for release. The men and women were all put together on the same floor and there were physical fights between the women, and some of the men would sneak off and have sex with each other, and the staff wasn't catching them. This place is a shithole. For my daughter, I was told by school staff that this place got better and they sent her here from school because of suicidal threats- no one is available, the staff are hard to get a hold of, the psychiatrist Dr. Hussein is never available to talk to and when she is, she says she knows nothing about my child's mental health history because she won't speak to the school social worker or even the social worker on staff, who is handling my daughter's case. Dr. Hussein lied to me on the phone saying she would not give my daughter medication but the very next day, the nurse calls to tell me they are putting her on meds at the dr's recommendation. Staff does not communicate with other staff on the patient's case. Staff does not call back, you have to call 100 times to even get someone on the phone. Staff spells patient's name wrong, staff spells family member's names wrong. Very poorly run but this is the norm for all mental hospitals these days. You want to know why more than 50% of mentally ill people never get treated properly? The USA government cuts funding, cut funding means poor training and education of staff or even understaffing, understaffing means sloppy management of mental hospitals, sloppy staff means patients who are very sick get bad treatment and they don't get better. read more

Please don't let anyone come here! I was forced by the ER because I was starving myself from depression. I was never suicidal or aggressive. I stayed from 12/1 - 12/9. They're at fault for my lamotrigine withdrawal and never gave me all of my meds from their pharmacy even when I told them everything I take. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My mom brought some nice warm pajama pants since it was going to be 10° but they didn't even give me those.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] There were only two shower times a day. I always wanted to shower in the morning but when I asked for my shower stuff they wouldn't bring it to me in time. I would be told to wait so when I asked later they would complain that I'm asking outside of schedule. The bathroom was right off of the door with only a curtain. When I would turn the shower on the shower and bathroom curtain would blow around. Anyone walking in the hall could easily see me naked. That made me feel so violated especially being a SA victim. They were 3 days late on my laundry so that stopped me from showering as well. I needed to be hydrated especially since I had diarrhea. When I asked for sport drinks or anything with electrolytes they said it was a luxury and they wouldn't order it. The dietitian came up to me and said he can only put in ensure orders. When I asked for one the charge nurse said the order wasn't in and it's only for weight gain but it looks like I don't need to gain any weight. I proved them wrong with my meal ticket and they finally gave me an ensure. [[HIGHLIGHT]]One day I was nauseous and asked for meds but the nurse sat there and ignored me while on her cell phone. I told her I need it now or I'm going to be sick and she said "hold on I'm doing something."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Don't get me started on how filthy that place was. The old guy cleaning would grab the day room garbage bin without gloves then touch everything else. Food or drinks would get spilled and it wouldn't get cleaned up until the next day. The mattress pads were lined with dirt, hair, food crumbs. There was an all around weird smell and sometimes urine stench. A psychotic patient snuck into my bathroom and stole my used hygiene product. When staff tried to take it from the patient the staff was slapped. The patient received a shot and it didn't help because the patient did it again. That same patient was allowed to randomly walk the halls at night making noises causing me to wake up. I saw a special needs patient sit in their own waste multiple times. They were placed back in the day room only to do it again. It broke my heart to watch them struggle. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I was being discharged I asked for help with my bags since I hurt my back a few weeks ago and the charge nurse rolled her eyes telling me to do it myself.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Then a patient tried starting a fight with me and nobody did anything as if they thought I deserved it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]As the charge nurse lead me out I started crying and she rudely told my mom "good luck... Mom." At Hartgrove Mental hospital i witnessed 3 roommates who were consigned to a living death of overmedication from over 9 pills, never getting out of bed around the clock except sometimes to eat, living in permanent darkness.. They use a serum to liquify their waste so they can do this. They were put down so they can never get up again. One guy didn't look like he would last long. He said he was 55 looked 75. Another guy in his twenties, his life finished as if he never had a chance. This is the Health Care System they don't want us to see. I was literally dying from an internal infection for 3 days complaining of pain, fever, night sweats, high blood pressure, nausea, they did nothing! This hospital and Little Village Academy from Little Village really took me and my brother as threats, this affected us threw middle school and high school I'm now 19 and hes 18....yes we at the time where kids we didn't know better ...we where immigrants looking for a better life...take notice my mom didn't know better the system failed us the system decided to but us in this facility giving us pills to "self control" ...I wish I would've gone back and told someone of the dangers this place can have on a child. I want to give this place the worst review possible. I want to be very open and honest about why I was there and my experiences so individuals looking at this place can have a full understanding of the horror. I was sent to Hartgrove for attempt suicide after I made the decision to take 19, 10mg, of my prescribed Prozac pills. I arrived at the hospital where I sat in a room with no information after filling out paperwork on what was to come next. I sat in there for at least 2 hours by myself and then a man arrived and said "okay we are ready" so I followed. He led me to UN2N which is the location of what wing of the hospital I was in. Upon arrival I needed to be formally checked-in which means they review your personal belongings so you are not a danger to yourself as well as following the "rules" that Hartgrove alleges they have about language and other various things. I sat in the chair and the man who was checking me in took 40 minutes to do so because he decided he wanted to eat his Tostados in front of me. He made comments about cannabis use that were completely not expected from a staff member. I then was led to my room where I was suppose to stay, I was given only a blanket, NO pillow, NO toiletries, NO feminine products as I was on my period. I was told absolutely nothing and left in the room. I did not know what I could or could not do and did not want to get in trouble because I could tell this place was unlike an environment I had ever been in and unfortunately people here were experiencing a variety of different problems and I did not want to risk not being taken seriously. I went to sleep that night and woke up the next morning with no information still. Luckily for me I did have a nice roommate unlike many people who I asked in the morning "what happens next" and she shared with me that breakfast will be soon and they turn the hall light on to let people know they are allowed to leave their rooms. The room I was in had no clock, no waste bin, the "door" to the bathroom which is a curtain was hardly attached. I arrived to breakfast to be served meat which I cannot eat because I have never had meat and it physically makes me ill. I did not eat the breakfast and asked that I be served a meal with no meat for my next meal. There are only two things to do while here: you can either sit in your room or you sit in the Dayroom which has a TV, no games, and coloring. Still with no information on what was going on, I got to meet with a doctor who talked to me for less than a minute asking how I was feeling and said I was given basic vitamins as standard procedure for anyone in the hospital. Not one person around me was being given vitamins. I took them thinking the doctor knew best, obviously, as I was still confused. I then met with a psychiatrist, who discussed with me for 5 minutes and said he thought I may have bi-polar disorder and wanted to start me on new medication, I thought it could be possible and agreed to start on the lowest dosage possible. For my rest of my time there here is what I witnessed: group therapy does not exist. In the mornings ONLY during the weekdays did they offer cognitive-behavioral therapy which was very pathetic to say the least it spanned 30 minutes each morning and since there are no clocks you never know what time it is or when to go to the dayroom. The "therapy" that was held 2x a day after that was the worst part of all for me personally. The woman who would "lead" it would use extremely foul language, from the N word, to every cuss word in existence. She would use these words while discussing her personal recent end of her relationship with her girlfriend. It was not therapy, it was entirely her ranting about her relationship and how she was a "bigger person" in her relationship. On some days she would yell at a patient who had a cognitive disability telling him to "get his shit together" "get a girlfriend" "be a man" and it was quite frightening. This all would occur during group therapy. At times I felt so uncomfortable by the language being used, particularly in reference to sex, because I suffer from PTSD that I would leave the room. I complained to someone who worked at the hospital about the language and then I sat in my room. I discovered that first full day there that they thought I was suffering from opioid abuse, which as you can see is not why I was there. They kept performing KPGS on myself and the first time I asked why and she did not give me an answer but the second time that day I ask the man who was GOING TO perform it and he said its standard practice have someone uses opioids to make sure their heart rate is okay. I informed him I had never used opioids and what I was there for and he quite literally said "well this was a waste of time, you do not need this" and left. At this point I was very concerned about my health treatment plan and asked to see a copy of the report of why I was there because clearly there was a miscommunication. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR KIDS HERE!!!! This place is so unprofessional, rude and make you feel like your in jail. They have girls with boys, they have kids that are dangerous, with kids who are emotionally damaged and they don't know how to take care of them. They take your kid and promise you can visit and call, don't believe them, once your kid is inside don't even think about visiting them. Forgot phone calls, the line is usually busy or no one answers and if they do answer they say there are no phones available. Once your inside they lock you in a holding room and you have to bang on the window to even use the bathroom. Staff in front is extremely rude and dont give you a choice if you at to have your child there or not. One staff member threatened me if I didn't sign her in they would be forced to take her from me. If your in the hospital and they recommend this place, TURN IT DOWN. WAIT FOR A BED SOMEWHERE ELSE! Trust me you will be thankful you did. read more

I was a patient here for the second time back in May of 2021. Long story short Hartgrove allowed a young man to walk into my face and become verbally aggressive and abusive while watching. When I told him off I was transferred off the unit and given a PRN. A few days later I was in my room sleep and woken up by a nurse who called my name then gave me meds. Later when I woke up my roommate asked me was I feeling okay and that she was upset that she did not get her meds because the nurse gave them to me. I was confused but I could remember my name being called then sitting up taking medication. I've called patient advocacy but of course I'm not getting no help there either. I was told no paper work would be filed and they want to just sweep everything under the rug. read more

This is the worst hospital ever! It's dirty, the food is terrible, the staff are uncaring and cold to the patients, there is nothing to do besides watch T.V. or color in the dayroom, all interviews with the doctors, social workers, and therapists occurred in the hall with no privacy, there were never enough linens and hygiene supplies for the patients, etc. As for the pictures they have posted here of the the facility: a buffet? a basketball court? cute rooms? I never saw any of that. There is nothing about this place that is rehabilitative. The program was a joke, half of it consisting of "rest and relaxation", which was just patients being restricted to their rooms with nothing to do. The other half of the program was college students running half-assed groups that are geared toward the level of a 5th grader (mazes, musical emotions, etc). At one point in my stay, I found a patient cutting her wrists with a plastic fork. I asked the patient to give me the fork, which she did. However, when I turned in the fork to the RN and told her that the patient had superficial lacerations on her left forearm (I am a paramedic), the RN responded by saying that I shouldn't have intervened in other patients care. WTF?! I left this facility in worse shape than when I arrived. I developed severe anxiety while I was there so bad that two days after my release I was advised by my psychiatrist to be seen in the emergency dept. where I was given IV Lorazapam and a prescription for a weeks worth of Lorazapam to keep me calm. This place is a joke, I cannot understand how they think they are helping people with issues, they have you in a room for hours .They don't allow you to come out till they open up the day room, I was surrounded by a few really disturbed individuals, some who banged their heads on walls, some had arguments with themselves, and a young pregnant teenager who kept seeking attention by starting fights and being loud with other peers, this place will not keep your loved ones safe, I was taken here after speaking to a doctor about depression next thing I know, I was being transported to this hell hole, when I was suppose to be at work that morning, instead everything went south... read more

A series of poor experiences with personnel helped neither our child nor us as her parents. Communication was practically nonexistent, "phone sessions" (a ridiculous concept to begin with) were scheduled but not followed through by staff, no papers were given at admission (e.g., no contact numbers, no rights and responsibilites, or any other basic information), no progress notes came to us at any point. Our high schooler's discharge papers from the PHP were unprofessionally written: full of inconsistencies, cross-outs, and errors that didn't make sense. read more

It has definitely gotten me on the path to improvement and in particular Dr Lynda Pettigrew has been a great help even after leaving with helping find certain information and getting back to work. I just wish we had better maintained things to do in the day room. Most of the games and activity stuff was missing several part like the chess set was an amalgamation of several different chess sets and many of the pieces were broken. read more

My loved one is in here currently and they do not get treated properly. They use excessive force, force medication upon patients, and my loved one has ptsd and was held down and dragged across the floor instead of comforting them. I absolutely despise this place. read more

i haven't been in the rooms with a roommate and everything but i have been in a program where they supposedly help your depression, anger issues , etc. i'm the program, they have you sign in and they wait for a little bit until they start. they had us do these things that are like "what helps you calm down" "what makes you mad or anxious." after that, they would take us outside for about 30 minutes. it's a pretty big spacious back and mr.paul and ms.monique were good. so was ms.jackie and other workers there. when i was there, i was stuck with the kids 11 and younger and the boys and girls were in the same room. if you're older, you get into a room with just girls or if you're a boy, in a room with just boys. they also have bathrooms in the rooms. read more

I was there in March of 2015. I have PTSD from childhood abuse. I ended up going there after I tried to overdose on insulin. This was after I had a stroke and wanted to end it since I had trouble talking among other problems. I did not choose that hospital. It was the only one that had room. Horrible! If I could sue them, I would. They locked me in a room with the paperwork. I felt like I would not be able to leave until I signed that paper. It took forever and only after I signed the five day did they come to get me. No threats, just a simple understanding. When I first was in a room, I was not given any things that I needed. No toilet paper. No sheets, pillow, toothpaste, anything. I could not call my husband to get them. I was not a threat. I didn't get my toilet paper or any necessary items for three days. I believe it was a Friday and I didn't get anything, no matter how much I begged until a new weekday crew came in. Even then, I was not given anything until the new nurse asked if I needed anything. I had given up hope and stopped asking since I was having so much trouble communicating as it was. I stole and borrowed toilet paper or whatever I needed. It wasn't hard since a lot of the people were depressed, in the day room or just in bed crying. The psychiatrist was in a hurry. Didn't want to take time to talk to me I guess, since I talked really slow during that time. I was completely helpless and afraid to try to talk since I sounded drunk from my stroke. Most of the staff had tons of stuff to deal with and if I asked for anything, it took a lot of strength to talk. They didn't have time for me. I grew up in Chicago and I loved my city. Now, I live in a suburb and never even want to go back to Chicago because it hurts after all that. They didn't treat other people any better. The people who sat behind the desks didn't want to be bothered. The staff was overwhelmed but the administration was snotty and mean. Not my Job... was what I heard when I asked for a toothbrush. Sorry, it's been a long time but I'm still angry. I'll never get over what they did. I know I can't be alone. read more
