As someone who quilts and loves to travel which includes plenty of road trips, Hart's Fabric was at the top of my list for my first stop after driving straight up from Los Angeles. I arrived around 11am and was excited to pick out fabrics for a new quilt project and had high hopes for this place! Unfortunately, I was told they don't have a public restroom which of course made the experience rushed and uncomfortable after several hours on the road. I was hoping to take my time looking and picking out fabric but ended up only grabbing a zipper before needing to move on...and I still wasn't able to use the restroom before leaving. During my brief stop, I did notice some cute Ruby Star Society fabric, lots of notions, a variety of materials, and bins of $4.50 fat quarters. I wish I had been able to enjoy more. read more

We are so lucky to have a store like Harts Fabric in Santa Cruz! Their selection simply cannot be beat. I do a lot of quilting and have recently been branching out into clothing, not only is the variety of fabrics offered here mind blowing (rayon, linen, wool... gorgeous Italian silk!), but they have the most knowledgeable and friendly staff. On my most recent visit I was helped by a super sweet gal (didn't catch her name, sorry!), not only did she help me pick a beginner friendly pattern, but also helped figure out what fabric to buy and how much I'll need for my size. I was a little nervous to start my clothing making journey, but she really gave me the confidence to jump into this project! I can't wait to come back into the shop wearing my new dress! read more

I went there recently and was highly disappointed to see that they had no current Tula Pink (only a few bolts from 3 years ago) No Allison Glass, and Not up to date with the top designers and trends. I bought some fabric just to support a local shop and the young woman who cut my fabric was the absolute worst! There were a few cuts of fabric that had 1-3 inches more than what I order on that cut, I asked if they had a discount for getting the last piece of the fabric she said no. One cut was 1 inch over and I asked if I could just have the 1 inch since I was getting over 20 different fabrics, she said no and that they MUST charge for every inch. I will mind you that since they seem unable to do math, you can only buy your fabric in 1/8ths of a yard increments. So, how was she going to charge me for the extra 1 inch since when I tried to order a different size earlier she said she couldn't cut it because it wasn't on their pre calculated cheat sheet sizes (and yes it was over a half yard). I think they need to hire me to come in and teach these worker's some basic math skills or create a cheat sheet that has each cut in 1 inch increments so customers can get the sizes they want. The kicker here, is that for one of the fabrics I ordered 36 inches, the cut was only 34 and she said, is it ok if I just give you this or do you want me to cut you a new piece? I asked her what the price would be, she said she would still charge me for the 36 inches even though it was only 34 and there was more fabric on the bolt, that particular piece had just come to an end. That's a hard pass!!! So, earlier, she had to charge me for every inch, but when its in their favor, they can overcharge. Never ever in a million years ask a customer if you can give them less of the product for the full product price, that is absolutely nuts!!! I am going to go in and get her name so I can update this. She was in her young 20's, short dirty blonde hair that may have had blue coloring that was faded. They also have no restroom for the public. I was in there with my elderly disabled mom and I spent several hundred dollars and my mom couldn't even use the restroom. Their customer service was horrible, the selection was abysmal and I saw fabric that was there 3 years ago still sitting there, they don't carry Aurafil thread, they Dont carry Pattern's Annie's , they Dont have trendy fabrics, no restroom, rude, and horrible parking. Let's not forget their high prices as well. No thank you. I can order fabric from shops online that carry the full lines of all of Tula Pink, Kaffe Fasset, Anna Maria Horner, Odile, Allison Glass and the likes of them at great prices $8-$12 a yard and get free shipping. I wont be back other than to get the worker's name who cut my fabric. Last but not least, they Dont cut anything over what you order to prevent an uneven or short cut and guess what, at least half of my 20 plus cuts were not cut straight and didn't come out to a full 36 inches. Absolutely nuts for people who are supposed to be professionals at doing that!! Oh, and she folded my fabric haphazardly as well. New fabric should be treated like gems and folded perfectly so there folds Dont affect the fabric, as it stretches the fibers and they will never go back to how they were which is not good for quilting. This place needs an overhaul. read more

I am truly saddened to write this review, and contemplated doing so because I have been shopping here when I lived in the area and then online for my small business...spending easily thousands of dollars across a decade. My intent in sharing this experience is to remind them there is accountability in how they respond to legitimate/fair concerns, and to try to warn others on how their experiences may end up blowing up in their faces. The fact is/was, Hart's store is clean, well-organized, and the prices are fair. I've always enjoyed going up and down the rows just admiring the assortment. In-person customer service isn't consistent, but heck, those little bumps are really normal as part of being a small business and I have appreciated it when there were some really great helpers (see also other reviews). Hart's flat-rate shipping service online (currently $8.75) is a great deal when you are ordering large amounts, and very fair in middle amounts. After all, a flat rate envelope (padded or regular) via USPS Priority is about that much (and the outer packaging is at no add'l cost for businesses), and depending on the thickness of the fabric, you can stuff a few yards. However, for small/light amounts, you can end up paying just as much for shipping as the fabric. Well, I get it. I run a small business too, and one of the things that really hurts us all is the cost of shipping as it only grows while big corporate companies get lower rates due to their volume. My awful experience started when I wrote an email reporting that the nearly $9 I paid for shipping was sent via First Class service that costs a total of ~$4-5. I had only ordered one yard this time because ordering fabrics online in bulk is very risky. I had planned to go back to get more. My email explained why it felt like I was being misled - knowing the cost of the services I paid, it appeared unethical that Hart's was pocketing the overage under pretense of covering shipping costs they did not use. All I wanted to know was, why it couldn't just be shipped at the value I paid (aka Priority). Had it been done that way, I still wouldn't be happy, but at last it would be an honest and transparent way of doing business. I understand that most people are likely happy with their policy because the average consumer does not know how much shipping really costs and it is a good deal in bulk. But, out of all the fabric stores I support, including ones on Etsy, it is not unusual to get a refund for shipping overages over $1. So I suggested that could be made. But, it's not what I really was looking for. I can happily throw small businesses that bone as a tip. The first response flippantly told me to check the policies in place. I had many times before, but I did again just in case I misunderstood it. You can see the wording in the "original policy" photo I've attached to this review about UPS versus USPS at Hart's discretion. The ambiguity of the shipping method was why I had reached out for clarity - aka paying nearly double for the shipping/packaging service I received. I was disappointed by this response as it did not address my concern, and so I wrote back suggesting that the email be passed onto management and policies be re-visited. At this point, if Hart's did not respond or simply said thank you and made no changes, I would have likely just shrugged and continued supporting them when I was able to purchase larger amounts. However, they opted to take this opportunity to write me back, failing to not only legitimize my concern, but also opting to gaslight me with manipulation. I was sent a supposedly copy and pasted quote of a policy I simply did not read. Feeling gaslit, I go to the policy page once again to check my eyes and memory. The policy had suddenly been changed to differentiate between USPS Priority and First Class at Hart's discretion between my two emails (see the second photo). In a way, it's a good thing they took my suggestion and updated the policy for the benefit of all. Again, that's all that had to be done and I would have moved on. However, the fact that it was changed and then used to push responsibility on me (twice) of not reading and understanding their policy, along with self-victimization excuses of being a family-owned business was truly an insult to injury (plus a shady "we don't have to use Eco packaging" that has other implications). There was no attempt to take accountability sincerely. Any hint I made of unethical and unprofessional business doing...was only confirmed by this manipulation. Unfortunately small businesses that handle things like Hart's will only damage the rest of us. It is every business' choice on where they will eat costs, not to whine abut it and put it on customers. At this point, I will not be supporting Hart's any further and I'd suggest others to look elsewhere, such as a lovely small business up the East Bay Area that offers much better quality customer services with a real h(e)art! read more

While they continue to have a nice selection of fabrics, the customer service has become less than satisfactory. I purchased special order Sunbrella fabric and needed to know how much extra to buy for piping. The man who assisted me said, "oh we don't tell you that-we leave it to the designers". I was so flustered that I didn't think to check Google. Of course, sure enough, it's a simple formula so why isn't that a simple thing to offer to help customers? Then, I was required to pay $25 for shipping which would have been fine if delivered to my home, nearly an hour away, but the shipping was for delivery to the store so that, "they could check it first". This would have required me to drive another two hours round trip, just to pick it up. However, after waiting over two weeks, I called to inquire on status to find that the fabric I ordered had been discontinued. Apparently, the factory called but no one bothered to relay the message to me. It's a nice store otherwise. They ought to do better. read more

Hart's has been my go to fabric store for about 10 years now. The fabric selection is always wonderful. I am leaving this review today because after years of ogling, a specific fabric, I finally have a project for it. However, I did not know what the fabric was called and only had a vague description of it. I called their floor associate Matilda and explained as best I could what fabric I was looking for. Initially, she was unable to find the fabric but give me useful search terms of help me narrow down my search. With her help, I was able to find the name and the color way of the fabric. Unfortunately, after having it in stock for two years they had sold out (hence why she couldn't find it). However, Matilda did search the back just to make sure that there wasn't some stock still available that wasn't on the floor. I have also had really good experiences with almost all the floor staff. They are very knowledgeable about fabric, fabric usage, and fabric usage across different cultures!! Each associate has good general knowledge and it is always interesting to learn what they specialize in. Overall, I highly recommend you go to the store, if you are looking for fabric! read more

Hart's Fabric is my favorite place to shop for fabric. They have a wide variety of different fabrics for clothing, quilting, and upholstery. They also carry a lot of hard to find sewing supplies. I also love their selection of clothing patterns. The directions and fit are "spot on." I'm relatively new at sewing and appreciate detailed directions in sewing patterns. Shopping in person - fantastic! Their staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and have sewing experience. I've also purchased both fabric and digital patterns online through Hart's. Always a positive experience. I highly recommend Hart's Fabric to anyone who is looking for a unique collection of patterns, prints, and great conversation! Hart's can be pricey, but totally worth it. They have a decent sale rack of fabric and I save money in the long run because I end up with exactly what I'm looking for depending on the project I'm doing. read more

I'm really surprised they have good quality fabrics and a trek out to San Francisco isn't necessary. Like, good Italian silk fashion fabrics. Secondly, the service is excellent. The people who work there are knowledgeable and friendly and didn't make me feel sheepish for being new to sewing and asking questions. What an absolute delight! We brought in some of our high school tech students to introduce them to fabric stores and show them the plethora of delightful ideas they can get from different textiles. Aidan gave us a tour of his families wonderful shop and then we all wandered around in search of the "magic". We all had such a wonderful experience. I love that all of their patterns are from independent pattern makers and artisans from all over. I will definitely be back to spend some time perusing them. We found some wonderful fabric to start our mermaid making processes (we're putting up "Peter & the Starcatcher") as well as some beautiful embellishments. I also found some wonderful printed material that I plan to make a fun little gothic apron, for myself. I'm so happy that I found Hart's! I've read reviews where others said that the staff was distant and rude...are you delusional? The girls working here are FABULOUS! Always a sweet smile, a cute joke and they take the time to remember me when I return. Always helpful, always super nice. It's like an entire store of Manic Pixie Dream Girls with an affinity for sewing and crafting. Love their selection. They have a lot of unusual prints you won't find at discount or chain stores. While the prices are a little more on some items than most...it's really the same price per yard as JoAnn's on most fabrics! Fabric is not cheap unless you shop at warehouses, so if my options are supporting an amazing local business that's quirky and fun or a big name chain store...it's obvious where I'm going to go! I LOVE that they stock patterns from indie companies like Colette and Victory patterns. I've never been able to buy those in a shop before...only online! And the selection is huge! Rating - 5 Stars Contrary to what some of the other reviewers have said, during my visit here, the customer service was actually top notch! This was my first time in a fabric store and doing some sort of crafting project (I was making a tie blanket), so I'm grateful to say that the workers were extremely friendly and helpful. One of them even went out of their way to make a copy of instructions they had on how to make the blanket for me! On top of that, the workers were quite supportive of the ideas I had for my blanket and offered useful advice to questions that I had as well. I'm not an expert on sewing, fabrics, or crafting for all that matters. My mom is a great tailor and I'm ashamed to say that I cannot sew a straight line no matter how hard I tried. One thing I am good at, is turning my Halloween ideas into reality through my blood, sweat, tears, and crooked hems. I went to Hart's to hopefully find some spandex to make my costume. I was directed to the back section where there was a large decorated sign that said "Halloween Costumes!" There were plenty of bright colors, but nothing stretchy and the spandex material I was looking for. Instead I found bathing suit fabric that is stretchy. Unfortunately it was super expensive! I tried to see if any of the other fabrics would work the way I would want it to, but I would just be wasting my time. So I forked over my money for a yard of this expensive fabric. The customer service I received was nice. The guy led me around the store finding me all the stretchy material he could find. Then he left me alone to roam the store by myself, which I like doing. So now here I am about to start sewing up my costume. Let's hope everything turns out ok and the money will be worth it in the end! read more

I was looking online, and needed some quilting fabric for a quiltalong and stumbled on Hart's. Their website was chock full of fabrics that looked great, so I gave it a try! My order arrived within 2 days!! I was thrilled. I placed a second order yesterday, and customer service called to let me know one fabric was out of stock. She offered to let me select something else. I asked her to please select for me. I can't believe this place! I'm loving it. My order is arriving today!!! It was my first time here today. I came across their website while searching for fabric and was impressed with the different selections. Curious to see the website vs. store, I came in today and luckily saw all the fabrics that I was looking at online. Reading past reviews, I'm not really sure what the people who gave low ratings are expecting. The fabrics were all neatly organized by categories and easy to view. Customer service was excellent. I had two different salespeople ask if I needed any help. The only thing I could complain about it was the cutting line, but when the person ahead of you has 6 different items you should know it's going to take a minute. The girl working the cutting counter was super friendly and another girl came to help me once she saw me standing in line. In regards to price, I think it is on point. Yes, it is a little bit pricier than somewhere like Joann's, but only by maybe $2-3. Compared to the selection and quality, it is worth it to me. They had really great fabrics in the sales section too. Santa Cruz is a little out of the way for me to visit this store all the time (or else I would), but it is definitely worth a special trip or to check out while in town. read more

I have ordered on-line from Harts in the past. I recently placed an on-line order for a $10 swatch of fabric and paid the $6.99 for shipping. The item was mailed via USPS 1st class mail on January 13; it is now January 27 and the package has still not been delivered. Upon calling Harts Fabric they told me once it leaves their facility it is out of their hands and told me to call the USPS. As I write this I have been on hold for 50 minutes waiting to speak to a USPS representative to see where my package is. I politely asked Harts Fabric if they would at least refund me the $6.99 for shipping and they refused stating that once it leaves their store it is out of their control and cannot credit me for shipping, despite the fact that I still have not yet received the item and the USPS website says that it is "on its way to our next facility." I understand that Harts Fabric sent the package out in good faith, but as a customer who paid for the swatch and shipping for a daughter in need of the swatch for a college fashion portfolio deadline will be doing business elsewhere in the future. I was hoping that Harts Fabric would at least extend a gesture of goodwill by refunding my shipping fee, but apparently not. So, ten working business days (not including the Martin Luther Holiday and two weekends) have passed since the swatch was shipped and I do not have the fabric swatch, just a useless tracking number and a store that refuses to at least credit the shipping fee. If Harts Fabric is going to charge $6.99 for shipping a swatch, they should stand by the service they use and expected date of delivery. Mind you, the package only needed to travel about 100 miles from the store - not across the country. Bottom line, buyer beware if you order from Harts Fabric on-line. If the carrier misplaces or loses your package Harts Fabric could care less - it is not there problem and they will not offer you any customer service to help remedy the situation. read more

I ordered fabric online from Hart's during the current global pandemic. I was searching for a new fabric store since the usual suspects (Michael's, Joann's, and Hobby Lobby) all had ridiculously long shipping times. I was looking for fabric to make a quilt. Hart's selection online was fantastic. They have such cute prints, and things are categorized in fairly intuitive ways. For example, I was able to look for quilting fabric in a "Celestial" category! Try finding star fabric at Joann's, and you'll see how amazing it is that Hart's categorizes so well. Another thing I really liked what that they said they'll call you if they can only satisfy your order in multiple cuts. When you order fabric from Joann's, they say they might send you your order in multiple cuts, which sucks! Especially if you're trying to make a larger piece, like curtains. Hart's doesn't have that problem. Most importantly, though, Hart's shipping was phenomenally fast! I ordered on 4/13, it was shipped (Priority) on 4/15, and I received it today on 4/17. Fabric was a bit pricier than what I'm used to, but that was also met with a commensurate increase in quality. The 100% cotton fabrics I chose are soft and vibrant. I'm excited to get started working with them! Threw them in the wash just now. I'll definitely come back to Hart's for my fabric needs during this stay-at-home period! read more
