Spicy Salmon roll - just awesome!
    Mir A.

This is my absolute favorite sushi place in the Ottawa / Gatineau region. Sushi Go comes a close second. I am rating this place almost exclusively based on its sushi / fish menu because I do not eat meat. As far as sushi goes this is a place where I would love to meet the chef. First off the ambiance is pretty nice and modern, with outdoor seating also available. The place probably fits about 60 people so its not too huge. The wait staff for the mostly very friendly and most of them are also quite knowledgeable and willing to help with product selection. The fish is of a very good quality and really fresh. The sushi preparation style is unique. The sushi comes surrounded with a lot of flavors in terms of sauces and toppings. Some of the sushi is also slightly cooked/seared. All of it leading to amazing flavour profiles! The plates are a bit small, sort of like tapa style so you have to make sure you order a bit more food than usual. The prices are excellent for what you are getting. My friends and I have been here numerous times and we definitely plan to keep coming back.

This is a great place to go. The sushi is the best around Gatineau. Highly recommend.

I was a bit surprised at how business casual the decor was. It's comfortable, with lots of leather type bench seating. A good portion of the customers were business people. Our waiter knew we were there for a special occasion. He also knew the menu very well and was willing to express an opinion when asked, like what paired well, what his favorites were. All of the dishes were beautifully prepared and delicious. Thank you Play staff!

The Long Version: I was at Play Food and Wine Bar for a professional event that was sponsored by a pharmaceutical company. We were a group of about 30-40 people and had a section of the restaurant to ourselves. We had a set menu with a choice of mains (beef or vegetarian). We started off with a few hors d'oeuvres served on spoons. Servers were going around with them and I got to try two different types. One was a shrimp on a dollop of wasabi cream and the other was a gnocchi. Both were tasty and prepared us for the delicious meal to come. We all had the mixed salad, which was a spring mix with grapes, candied pecans, and whipped goat cheese, in a cucumber and mint vinaigrette. I loved the different textures and even though the salad came pre-dressed (I always prefer dressing on the side), the dressing wasn't heavy, so I didn't find it too overdressed for my tastes. For my main, I chose the beef cheek (the vegetarian option was gnocchi). The beef cheek was so tender and literally fall-apart. I didn't even need a knife. It was so flavourful too. It came with mushrooms and mashed potatoes. There was an olive and sun-dried tomato sauce on the beef that I found a too potent and overwhelming in flavour, but overall I still enjoyed the main. For dessert we had the chocolate tart. It had salted caramel on it and under the layer of chocolate was a layer of white chocolate fudge. It was very rich and decadent...overly so. I finished it nonetheless, lol. Service was excellent. We had several servers assigned to our group and they were attentive. They kept our water glasses and wine glasses full. Although I enjoyed the Pinot Grigio, I was driving, so had to limit myself to a glass and a half. Play Food and Wine Bar is owned by Stephen Beckta, who is a bit of a local celebrity, lol. His first restaurant is Beckta, which I have been to and while it's more upscale than Play, I actually enjoyed the food at Play more. His other restaurant is Gezellig, which is in my neighborhood (Westboro) and I've been to it a couple of times, and I definitely like Play better. I'm glad I was introduced to Play. The room we were in was lovely. It was long and narrow and had a bar. As with all restaurants in the Byward Market, parking is paid parkade parking or paid street parking only. Review #139 (2025)

The scallop crudo being on best app IMO. The tuna was OK and so was the welk which surprised me as being a menu item. I guess itsya popular time to eat! 3 weeks was worth the wait, as the anticipation of what we were about to enjoy grew stronger. Bread to start, with whipped butter. Hot from the oven. Soft, pillows of carb goodness, with a touch of salt. We started with the TOMATOES WITH FIOR DI LATTE AND RICOTTA STUFFED ZUCCHINI BLOSSOMS which was devine. My main was the ROASTED RAINBOW TROUT WITH BOILED POTATOES, PASTIS HOLLANDAISE AND SEA ASPARAGUS and hers was SWEET CORN AGNOLOTTI WITH BUTTER, PECORINO AND JALAPEÑO. Both dishes were faultless. We finished with Eton Mess with meringue, whipped cream and stewed rhubarb for dessert. It looks like a LOT, but the meringue is mostly air, so we tackled it with ease. And, it wasn't as sweet as expected. Americano to cleanse the palate. Fortunately, we found a parking spot right around the corner, so our full bellies didn't have to go too far.

Wow! This is my new favourite restaurant. This restaurant…read morereminds me a tad of The Melting Pot in the states, where you cook at the table using fondue oil, cheese and choco. But this elevates that process and is Japanese, which is one of my favourite flavour profiles. The ambiance is so nice. There are screens between the tables so that you can cook and eat in private, which I really appreciated. Being new to the process and restaurant, I felt so fortunate to have Jarred as my server. He explained how everything worked and was so patient with me. Basically, you pay one price for all you can eat...and it's such a bargain! There are so many meats, sides and even desserts to choose from. Jarred helped me choose and was so patient explaining everything that had been marinated in soy sauce and was not gluten free. I was disappointed I couldn't have beef, so he told me he would grab some brisket without the marinade. I ended up ordering that brisket, shrimp and sausage for the meat. The sides were sweet potato in a brown sugary sauce, corn, pineapple, and rice. I can say that the sausage was my favourite, had a nice sweetness to it and different from the typical sausage you get elsewhere. You use the grill to cook everything which is so much more fun than just sitting and waiting for the food to arrive. Everything was so fresh and just tasted amazing. The grilled pineapple was divine! Jarred also suggested I order the Bibimbap. It was a dish with seaweed, veggies, and an egg on top. It tasted like an amazing sushi roll. I also had an UME pineapple drink. You can add an extra oz of alcohol for just $2. It was delicious. There are always staff around and they clear dishes you are finished with super fast. Everything moves there like a well-oiled machine. For dessert, I had this little creme brulee, which was just the right size not to overstuff your tummy. So amazing all warm and bubbly after it sat on the grill. One of the best I've ever had. While writing this review, I discovered there is a location relatively close to where I live in Waterloo. I will definitely be going. This isn't just an extraordinary dinner, it was an extraordinary experience. Perfect food, perfect service, and such a great value! This would be so fun for a date night or night out with friends. I will definitely frequent this restaurant, LOVE it! This location also has a parking lot, which is most welcome in Ottawa!

While eating, I found a piece of metal/steel wool in the chicken that was served to me. This is a serious safety issue, imagine if I have swallowed it. Then instead of addressing the situation properly, we were only offered 10% off, which doesn't reflect how serious this incident is. (Looks like really not) I even asked them how do they handled this situation, and they just said 10% off is the best they can do ‍ This is not just a small mistake, it's a food safety concern!! Posting this to raise awareness and hopefully encourage better standards when it comes to food safety.
