The tuna poke bowl was amazing. Everything was fresh and there were a lot Of good sides such as corn, avocado, cabbage, cucumber, roe and something crunchy served on rice. I went with a spicy sauce and a bit of sushi sauce (a teriyaki like sauce). That was extra for $2. I think the owners have changed. The interior has been renovated since I last went years ago. My 12 yr old and I were visiting Ottawa from San Francisco and needed a quick lunch before our tour of the Senate. It was a hot afternoon so sushi sounded appealing. I hesitated when I saw the 4-star rating but am so glad we decided to go. We have some good sushi in SF but the quality and freshness of the fish we had at Sushi Fresh rivals the best of them. Reviewers dinged the place by a star for the atmosphere, but when I am going for sushi, the freshness, tenderness, and taste of the fish is so much more important. And the place is very pleasant for lunch. It definitely deserves at least a 4.5 rating. It also seems reasonably priced, though I can't compare to other local sushi restaurants. I liked the variety of items on the menu from bowls to nigiri to special rolls and bento boxes. We shared a Roll Bento and a Sakura special roll and it was plenty for both of us. The pieces were large with a generous proportion of fish versus rice and veggies. If you want sushi that will melt in your mouth, this is the place. I'd be a regular if I lived here! read more

After a long day touring the city I stopped in at Sushi Fresh for some dinner. While my meal was really good I would recommend taking out. The restaurant itself looks fantastic. It's clean and modern but very small. It can sit about 10 people and definitely cannot accommodate large groups. If I had known that ahead of time I probably would have looked elsewhere for my family of four. I saw most people ordering to go, which I feel is how they get most of their business. The staff was very friendly. You have to order at the counter and they will bring your order to your table. The lady behind the counter was energetic and happy to help. My meal took about 20 minutes to come out and she was very apologetic. She sounded very sincere and apologized 3 times over the course of the night. I wasn't in any rush so it was completely fine. I ordered a red dragon roll, beef gyoza, and the sushi and sashimi combo. The beef gyoza came out first. It was super crispy and cooked perfectly. While it didn't taste much different than your standard gyoza, I loved the crunch on it. The sushi was really good! The fish is cut large and thick, so you know you're getting your money's worth! The rice also has a nice flavor and the sushi as a whole was of really good quality. Overall I really enjoyed my dinner but I would recommend taking out due to the size of the restaurant. A small, quick meal would be fine but I don't think it's well suited for family dinners. The quality of the sushi, on the other hand, is fantastic and I'd definitely order again! read more

Excellent and F-R-E-S-H!!! We ordered the shrimp and vegetable tempura, sake and maguro sashimi, ume triple roll and the black dragon roll. The tempura was light and airy. The restaurant changes their oil frequently which is evident in the fragrance of the fried delights. They are generous with their cuts as the eel was a perfect ratio to the other ingredients. The sashimi was fresh and melted on our tongues. The miso soup was great for the fall weather. The service was impeccable especially as they accommodated all our allergies and put sauces on the side. I had lunch here recently with my husband and it was great. Very affordable, especially for a restaurant in the Byward Market. They have lunch specials from 11am to 2:30pm. We had the Combo #2 ($11.50), which had Miso soup, salad, 2 beef goyza, 3 avocado maki, 3 spicy salmon maki, 3 California maki and 3 shrimp tempura maki. The rolls were freshly made and were tasty. The rice to filling ratio was good. Service was really nice and efficient. The place is really small. It only seats 18 people and there are 2 rectangular tables, so seating is communal. However, we were there on a Wednesday at 12:30pm and there were only 2 other customers there. This place is a bit hidden because it doesn't really have its own sign. It's sort of inside the Lapointes Restaurant. Sushi Fresh is on the ground level and Lapointes is downstairs. So glad we discovered this place :) read more

I stopped here for a quick lunch! I ordered one of their sushi bento boxes and I was not disappointed. It was brought out quick and it was fresh. There isn't much you can say about sashimi except it's fresh or old! LOL ok ok, I lie, the quality of fish is also important. I had zero issues. I enjoyed my bento box and it was a great price. This sushi joint in Byward Market is a fine stop for a fresh and casual meal. I came here for a light dinner, since I had had a very large lunch. The menu has a lot of options - mostly sushi, obviously, but also nice sides and appetizers and a few non-sushi entrees. I ended up ordering a seaweed salad and a spicy tuna roll. The seaweed salad was simple and pretty standard. The tuna roll was tasty and had a good amount of fish. The restaurant ambiance is simple and casual. There weren't a ton of tables, but there was enough space not to feel claustrophobic. The waitress was friendly, though not very attentive. Overall it was an enjoyable experience. I had the Special Roll Moriwase (32pcs) (which came with Spider Roll, Double Shrimp Roll, Caterpillar Roll, Kamikaze Roll) for $43. This was the perfect amount to feed two people. It came with two miso soups. It was confusing to find the restaurant at first because it shares space with a fish and chips spot (downstairs). They share the same entrance as LaPointe restaurant. I saw that there was outdoor dining outside but I think it may belong to LaPointe. The interior is casual. They have wooden tables with a black/industrial theme. They sell snacks like Pocky toward the front of the store. My favorite of the 4 rolls was the double shrimp roll (fresh shrimp on top and shrimp tempura in the middle). I liked that the ginger they gave was cut up really small but they gave very little of it. I thought the rolls were good but in a very simple way. The spider roll was my least favorite because it had an aftertaste I couldn't pinpoint. Their menu is large and offers non-sushi dishes like bento boxes and noodles. Their website says they sell Korean cuisine too but I don't recall seeing it on the menu (I probably missed it). read more

I went for an early dinner and was served quickly by a very pleasant waitress. I ordered the crunch roll (california roll with tempura - I could possibly eat this once a day. Forever.) and the green roll (avocado and cucumber - I would eat this as my OTHER meal. Every day.) and was pleased with both of them. However, the rolls were a wee bit warm for how I like my sushi. Give it to me chilled, yo! Based on that I would have given this restaurant 3 stars, however; their avocado was perfect. I mean absolutely perfect. It intensified the flavour of both my rolls and made them taste like buttery goodness! Oh sweet, sweet avocado, you add magic to everything. My friend hand a hand roll with peppers and she seemed to enjoy it. They have a lots of options and the presentation is really lovely. Sushi Fresh is located in the Market, and it's actually connected to the Lapointe restaurant (not the fish market), on the ground floor, which is why they have the same address. I'm a huge fan of Sushi Fresh for a few reasons. I love that they offer delivery, which not a lot of sushi places do. They also have a really large menu of appetizers, all kinds of rolls, and moriwase sushi boats. All of their sushi and sashimi is really fresh, and I think they might actually get some it from Lapointe. All of their menu items are affordable, and their moriwase boats are such a good deal that it should be considered stealing! Some of my favorites here include salmon, white tuna, and sweet shrimp sashimi, Kamikaze maki rolls, special Ruby rolls, Sushi Fresh moriwase, and the tempura and roll bento box. read more

I'm going to start out by confessing that I love Sushi Fresh. I feel it's one of the most under rated Sushi restaurants in Ottawa. Sushi Fresh is a bit of an anomaly; from its barely noticeable sandwich board, to it's staff that hardly speak English or French and, of course, the fact that it's located inside the La Pointe's restaurant all make it very "unique". When looking at Sushi Fresh's menu, one can see that offers the standard sushi rolls, sushi and sashimi, cooked dishes and bento boxes. If you're vegetarian, they offer an adequate number of meals, rolls and appetizers. There are a few things that really set it apart from all other Sushi restaurant in Ottawa. 1. The quality of the fish is always very high. I suspect this is because they are buying their fish directly from La Pointe's. 2. They offer free delivery for orders over 30$. Be forewarned, delivery can take up to an hour. 3. Given the very high quality fish, the prices are VERY reasonable! You can fill yourself up for 10-20$ easily depending on what you order and how much you can eat. I always leave Sushi Fresh feeling like I really got a lot of bang for my buck. 4. This might have been some of the best sushi I have ever had. Sushi Fresh has a prime location for delivering sushi that is, well, *fresh*: located just above LePointe in ByWard Market, Sushi Fresh has access to the best fish daily. We ordered the Special Roll Moriwase ($38.95 for 32 pcs) for two people, which included the best soft shell crab roll I have ever had. Each roll was beautifully presented and the portions were generous. Add to that the absolutely adorable place settings and tea service, and I think I've found my new go-to place for lunch or dinner in Ottawa. read more

So many sushi shop serve rice rolls with a meagre speck of fish you might as well order the vegetarian options and save yourself a few dollars! But not here: the fish was definitely the star of each item. The rice was soft and pillowy although the chef could up his game by giving a bit more seasoning love. I guess you can't go wrong with super fresh sushi grade fish when Lapointe is your main monger. You can eat in although it is not cozy at all (great for a quick bite) or takeout. I understand you can also enjoy the sushi menu in Lapointe's restaurant located downstairs which is much more comfortable. Overall though, very good and priced within the norms. read more

Sushi Fresh is a very small restaurant, located on the upstairs level of lapointe. The sushi is well priced ($8-10 for a special roll). The rolls are a great size and the fish is very fresh. We tried the kamikaze, green dragon, caterpillar, and spicy crab all of which were delicious. We also tried the seaweed salad and sashimi. The sashimi was $4ish for 3 pieces, and they were pretty sizeable pieces. I would definitely recommend sushi fresh (especially if you don't want all you can eat). read more

Raw fish is fresh, and they aren't stingy with it - I have never seen rolls with so much salmon and so little rice. Came in for dinner on a Sunday to a fairly empty restaurant. I had the chirashi sushi bowl, sashimi:rice ratio was a little sad but their rice is well flavored. The avocado accompanying it seemed a little pathetic, with three slices no bigger than my index finger in total.... but the freshness of the fish is what I came for and it is what I got! Bonus also for having some serious wasabi. Price is a liiiittle bit higher than your standard eat-in sushi (~$17), but the environment was nice and this *is* the Byward Market! Frequently travel to Japan and this is about as good as you'll get in Ottawa. Service is prompt, portions are big, price is reasonable. It's affiliated with Lapointe Fish Market, so the fish is coming directly from their monger. Sushi Fresh and possibly, C'est Japon are the two best in Ottawa I've encountered so far. A little gem hidden inside the indoor market where I have seen politicians and TV celebs (next to the bagel place and facing the Crocs store). The older couple who run this cute little restaurant make my lunchtime with their unpretentiousness, friendliness and great humour. It shows that they genuinely want to provide good service at very reasonable prices. I particularly like their sushi rolls and tempura shrimp / yam, which are all made to order while you wait.
