We recently moved to the area and our lovely neighbor brought us one of their blueberry pies. For…read moreboth my partner and I, it was the greatest blueberry pie we've ever had. The crust was very homemade (didn't fit perfectly in the tin) and was the perfect amount of flaky. We think they use honey to sweeten the pie, it was so flavorful. The reason this isn't 5 stars is the prices. I checked out the farm later and it's $10 for a quart of strawberries, which are put in a brown paper bag because they save the quart containers. I had paid $7 at Beth's market in warren just a couple days earlier. Winterberry is wonderful, but it's not made for locals. The interior of their farm stand is magical, and not like any other I've seen, but again adds to it not being for everyday purchases.

We decided to finally stop in yesterday after driving by many times and seeing their signs…read moreadvertising pie. Upon entering, the young woman working asked us if we'd ever been there before. When we said no, she proceeded to tell us about the farm and it's history, in great detail (down to the owner homeschooling all her children and other details we didn't really need to know just to buy a pie). She explained that the farm was organic, which was good information to include, but she used the word "organic" enough times that if I got a flower for each, I could have walked away with one of their beautiful large bouquets. We definitely would have appreciated being asked if we wanted to learn all about the farm or not because some may be interested in standing there for 10 minutes before being allowed to proceed with looking around/shopping, but we were not. When we started to look around, we were first told about everything they were out of, before being told about what they did have, which I found odd. We bought a triple berry pie for $24. When we had it last night, and all 5 of us thought it was ok, but not great. The filling was tasty, but there wasn't much of it, so the pie was quite short and didn't come up near the top of the pie plate. The top crust had nice color, but was difficult enough to cut with a fork that the filling squished out and the bottom and top crusts touched before a bite could be broken off. The crust was dense and not at all flaky, with very little flavor. I generally don't comment on price because I typically feel it's a personal decision to decide whether or not something is worth it's price or not, but I know of other pies in the area that I could get for at least $5 less that are full-height, flavorful, and made with quality ingredients. Overall, if this is your type of place, great for you. Just not for me.

Owner operated and staffed, it's a small business you can support, the items come from their Farm two miles from the stand! They carry everything for your meal preparation needs are. Stocking seasonal produce, local favorites, and state favorites. We arrived just after the flags were hoisted that they were open. Plenty of parking and handicap accessible. Store is perfect sized with ample walking and items displayed at arms length. A farm stand decorated with signage and pictures. Owner greeted us and asked if she could help us find anything, we were looking in the bakery case and did not see the rolls we've heard so much about. It's Sunday and it's known as cinnamon roll day; they are displayed and served in the coffee room, around the corner. We were so early the rolls had not come out yet. With in three minutes they came out hot with melting icing YUM!! You're choice to take a plate or to go container. Plenty of napkins and forks. We sat in our car since it was a cold fall morning to enjoy our treat. The dough has a nice buttery flavor, dry yet not crumbly. The cinnamon and sugar layers had the perfect amount of each that one did not over power the other. For someone who feels breakfast is not complete without bacon, I really enjoyed. $2.99 each was reasonable.

The line up is an eclectic mix of Maine products and vendors. Whether you need a sweater (or her lamb), specialty vinegars (and recipes), or any other delicious housewarming or holiday present, the market offers a diverse array of products besides the organic produce and other goodies. We like providing them to our VRBO guests too. We do wish they would move Hootenanny's Bread to the south end of the market near Dharma Farms and Kelly Bros beef-- it would reduce the congestion from the long lines and make the "main street" of the market more enjoyable. The market moves indoors with fewer vendors in November-- being in the historic freight shed is a little more crowded but also cozy as the winter months progress. And our freezer is never without a Mainely Poultry pot pie or two, some haddock "burgers", or a Chase Farms apple pie. It's our kids (and their kids) favorite activity when they visit.

Grab yourself some totally goattly chipotle cheese, a few loaves from the Van Gogh of Dough, and some chicken legs from Maine-ly Poultry. And even if they aren't punny, pick up some fresh eggs, crab dip, squash, sage bundles for spiritual wellness, handmade candles, peppers of all kinds, shepherd's pie, heritiage pork, and the best jam ever. That's just a little bit of the selection. And if you tell the folks selling bulbs for your garden that you don't have a garden because you lead a sad life in NYC, they will offer a sympathetic, "Awwww." But my favorite thing about this market? There was a little kid trying to buy a pumpkin, and he dropped it. The nice vendor said he could still have it, but now it's a squash. I'm going to be using that dad joke for decades to come.
