We were vacationing in Yachuts and I lost the car keys on the beach somewhere. We were completely stranded! No taxis or other car services around these parts. We just returned from a trip to the Oregon coast. We were ready to check out of hotel and problem with steering column on the truck! Couldn't move and key wasn't going in. I just bought a 125 year old house in Newport and wanted to change the locks. I called Harvey's, Stephen answered the phone (no voicemail- an actual person!) and was able to come over right away. The locks were old and difficult to work but he managed to change them out, add new doorknobs in the finish I was hoping for, and make the place secure. Harvey's rescued me late at night when the keys got locked in the trunk, and the interior trunk latch wouldn't work. After trying everything under the sun, it became clear we needed a new key. The spare key was with my wife who was in Canada, so she texted him photos of the key, and he actually made a perfectly fitting key from those photos! He opened the trunk and there were the keys! We needed a deadbolt on a rear exterior door repaired near Depoe Bay, where it was completely frozen from the salty sea air. I called Harvey's at around 8:00 on Thursday night, expecting to get an answering machine. Instead, Steve answered as he was working on someone's car lock, discussed the issue and told me he would check his stock and call back in the morning. He called Friday morning as promised and said he could order the lock and come out Monday afternoon or Tuesday when it arrived. Cost would be a $75 service charge plus the cost of the deadbolt. Sure enough, Steve called yesterday (Monday) morning and said he could come right out from Newport, as the lock had been delivered. It turned out that the doorknob that I thought was just for pushing the door open also had a latch and was frozen. Steve worked nearly two hours to get the doorknob and the deadbolt detached, so that the door could open. He had not brought a doorknob because I had not discussed it, so he installed the new deadbolt and reinstalled the original doorknob, after taking care to wax the screws and oil the lock. He also took the time to instruct us on periodically taking the lock off and oiling it to protect it from the salt air and minimize the need to replace it. He said he could come back the next day and install a new doorknob and suggested a door handle that would be easier for my mother to operate. He then followed up by text to confirm that he had it in stock and that he would be here today at 10:00 a.m. True to his word, Steve showed up, installed the new door handle, and again was careful to wax the screws and oil the mechanism. He was unfailingly cheerful, even the previous day when it was so difficult to remove the faulty doorknob and deadbolt (and the doorknob was unexpected). Steve's grandfather, "Harvey," started the business, and his father, also named Harvey, continued it. Steve is the third generation to own it. Steve only charged the $75 service fee for the first visit; otherwise the only charge was for the door handle and the deadbolt (he preferred cash or a check). He was professional, helpful and trustworthy. We enjoyed talking with him while he worked about whales, books and all sorts of things - he is a quite a talker with a good sense of humor. We wouldn't hesitate to call him again if we need a locksmith. read more

I was really pleased with Steven Henry from Harvey's Lock and Key who came to my house to repair my front door lock. I was afraid he would not want to take apart and reassemble the broken Baldwin lock because the company sent me a repair kit that had a million little pieces, but he patiently worked at it until it was done. Went skim boarding at one of the Newport beaches. The tide came up and swept away my car keys. Called around for a locksmith. Nobody wanted to even try to help me but I was referred to Harvey's by everyone I called. As soon as I talked to Steve at Harvey's he was on our way and arrived in 5 minutes! Took him only 2 minutes to unlock the car! He then drove me to the Honda dealer to get a new key and programmed the key himself. He's all about saving the customer money too. I would give 10 stars if I could. We were stranded in Rockaway Beach (2 hours from Newport) after losing our only key in the sand the night before. We were trying to get to Bend. We called every locksmith around our area and beyond and finally got a hold of someone at Harvey's. Did I mention this was a Sunday. I think it was about 1 p.m. and whoever answered(I feel really bad cuz he was awesome and I can't remember his name) said "yeah I can do it." He grabbed his stuff and headed our way. We had a spare key but it didn't have a chip so we needed a key made using his expensive computer. He showed up in his van with the key cutter and computer system and had our keys made In about 30 minutes. Our nightmare was over thanks to his willingness to drive 2 hours from Newport on a Sunday. It cost a little bit but nothing outrageous considering what it would cost at a locksmith on a normal day. Can't say enough good about our experience. read more
