We paid Mr. Harwell to provide drawings for a home renovation. We received a drawing of one room and we told the drawings of the other rooms would follow. We also paid for a septic system inspection which was never done. We have worked with contractors on three home builds with no issues, unfortunately not the case with Harwell Building Company. read more

When my roommates hired Barry Harwell to redo our bathrooms, I was excited because I'd heard that he does great work--sadly this was not the case. Our project was supposed to take seven days and be done on December 17th, it's currently January 21st. In the last month and a half Barry's crew have knocked a hole in our living room wall, stripped the finish off of hardwood floors in our entry way, and showed very little if any respect for our home. When the work began to drag past the stated completion date, I hoped it was because the crew was paying attention to details and would do a good job. This has also not been the case, every aspect of this job has been poorly done. Fixtures were installed backwards, the wrong walls were painted and then poorly painted over again. Electrical wires have been left hanging out of the ceiling, and the work in general looks much worse than what I would have expected if I were doing the job myself. Barry's crew (and Barry himself) rarely show up and when they do they typically don't stay for very long, coming up with any number of excuses as to why they need to leave and can't complete the project. At this point I just want them out of our house so we can fix the issues ourselves. If you value your home, care about the quality of work done, or want it done in an honest and timely manner, please do NOT hire Barry Harwell. In person he's seemed like a nice guy; however, the effort put forth in this work has caused me to seriously question his integrity. read more

If you don't read this entire review at least know this: Harwell Building is by far the best building company in Birmingham, perhaps Alabama. I can substantiate that claim by telling you that I have had them do two huge projects at my place and both times they made my dreams come true. In one case, he took part of my unfinished basement and turned it into a library, media/exercise room and a bathroom and the second project was to build a large screened in porch off of my living room which is effectively on the second floor. The projects were very different and yet he did a splendid job on both of them. Barry worked with me from the planning phase to the finish. He listened carefully to my ideas, made helpful practical and money saving suggestions and then gave me what turned out to be a very accurate and reasonable estimate for each project. If adjustments needed to be made along the way either because I wanted to change something or they ran into some structural problem that was unanticipated, before moving on Barry would discuss it and revise the estimate for approval before proceeding with the job. Both projects were done efficiently and finished on time. The people he has working for him are excellent at whatever he assigns them to do and he checked up on the project regularly. Barry is honest, hardworking and reliable in every way. On top of that he is simply a good person. I've seen some other work that he has done and I'm equally impressed by his talent. I would hire Harwell Building for any other projects I wanted done or even to build a new house should I move. I'd suggest that you do the same. You will be happy with the results read more

Harwell Building Company built a screened in porch on our house about 3 years ago. Was satisfied for the most part. Had to have them come back after one of the 6x6 post began to warp very bad. The job was never completely finished, the painters never came back for the second coat of stain on the ceiling of porch nor the paint on the fascia boards. When Barry finished we were told they would be back. Never happened as far as painters read more
