I took 12 of my friends to this ghost hunting tour for my birthday this past October, and we had the BEST time! It was so cool using the EMF readers, talk box, and SLS camera to speak with the ghosts. And we loved learning about the ghostly history of all the places we visited. But I think my favorite part of the tour was talking with Tommy while walking from one location to the next. He is so knowledgeable about the paranormal, and it was fun bouncing off ideas with him. We did a private tour for my daughter's 13th birthday party this March. The walk was a modified one for teens that left out the serial killer houses, and it was such a hit with her and her friends! The right amount of scary. They loved the ghostly stories of the area but also getting hands on with the ghost detecting equipment themselves. Everyone got their own detector, so they didn't have to share, and they had so much fun seeing what signals they could pick up with their devices. It made it so much more than just a ghost walk. I am so glad we plumped for this. It was a unique birthday experience at a price that was manageable. That it was 2 hours long meant it didn't feel rushed and gave them time to have a real go with the equipment. The guide, Tommy, was great - incredibly knowledgeable, deeply committed to authenticity, and super responsive on email. There were also prizes which made it even more fun for them. We live in the Haight and this is a real gem that has been right under our noses for years! I would thoroughly recommend it, and particularly to parents who are looking for birthday ideas. I went a few years ago when walking tours started picking up during covid, as there wasn't else much to do. It was so much fun! To this day, I still tell my friends who live in the area about which places and parks are haunted. The host is reputable, entertaining, we got fun prizes, and everyone had a great time learning about the local area with a spooky overlay. I did book a different ghost tour that was downtown with another company, and it was very generic and impersonal compared to this one. The hosts were possibly unemployed actors who kept forgetting their lines for the stories. HIGHLY recommend Haunted Haight as this guy knows his stuff and he has a passion for it, rather than feeling like a side gig. I am a bit of a nerd so I when I travel I like to visit some historical touristy spots that might be a bit off the beaten path. One way to explore a place is with a haunted tour. Yes, it can be goofy and cheesy but it's an alternative way to find out about the history of a city. This was a 2 mile walking tour through the Haight and Ashbury district of San Francisco. It's a mild walk since there are only slight hills to navigate. Finding a parking space around the streets can be a challenge, so you might want to come a bit early. We decided to have dinner close by and then walk over to the meeting place. There are a number of great dive bars in the area, restaurants and off beat stores to visit if you have a chance. The tour guide Tommy Netzband was very friendly and took time to greet and interact with everyone individually over the course of the 2 hour tour. The tour moves at a good pace, but we often found ourselves waiting for people since we had the tendency to walk ahead of the group. The stories of murder, spirits and hauntings were interesting. There wasn't anything too spooky and there were no gimmicks. It was really fascinating to hear about the different characters that lived in the area over time (Jim Jones, Manson, Janis Joplin) and how the landscape of the area has changed (farm town to amusement park to hippie village with beautiful architecture and victorian homes). One nice part was the ongoing prize raffles throughout the tour. The gifts were cheesy, but it was cool to feel like we were getting a little something extra for the price. The tour guide really seemed personally invested in the history and stories that he told, and it's always nice to see someone passionate about the things they do. Informational, hauntedly intriguing, and amusing. Tommy our wonderful guide, presented historical facts about the city and the haight district as well as snip bits of bewildering stories of paranormal events. The tour was a good 2 hours which flew. Tommy took us walking about 16 blocks or 1.5 miles, no uphills. The night was nice but chilly, it would benefit you to wear comfortable and something warm if possible a warm costume. The walk began at the coffee shop and looped back around past the panhandle park and golden gate park back to the same street we began. Tommy took us to the old residency of some famous people and to spots of reported paranormal experiences. Raffle prizes were generously given out through out the walk. They just kept coming one after another from Tommy's small bag! He even managed to pack a portable projector to use as a visual at some parts of the tour! The group size was about 40 individuals. The group was a mix of locals and out of towners, all adults. It was a well humored and eager group, contributing factor probably is Tommys warm and funny personality. As a paranormal enthusiast, going on ghost tours is a hobby for me. I've been on a lot. Going on ghost tours is the best way to learn about the history of a city. The Haunted Haight Walking Tour is in my top 3 of favorite ghost tours in San Francisco. I liked it so much that I've gone TWICE! Tommy is a fantastic storyteller. I really appreciate the fact that his stories are well researched. One of the worst things to encounter on a ghost tour is someone lazy whose source is a lazy google search. There's one tour in San Francisco that does that. If you're interested to know which one that is, check out my reviews so you can avoid it. This tour is definitely not lazy. Tommy is clearly very passionate about the history of the Haight. Even if you're not into the paranormal or you're a skeptic, there's still a lot of interesting stories to keep you entertained on this tour. I'd recommend wearing comfortable shoes and dressing very very warmly. When I went, I wore a down jacket, a cashmere wrap, leather jacket, and leather gloves and I was STILL cold, even with all the walking we did. The weather in the area is unpredictable so come prepared. With Halloween coming up, this tour would be a great activity for the month of October. I'd recommend this tour for locals, out of town tourists, date night activity, or just a fun night with friends. Ooh, and everyone gets a prize! I don't think anyone went home empty handed. The glow in the dark growing zombie I got is awesome. SF natives have heard many ghost lores growing up here. This native and her brave sis had heard about the ghost tours for awhile now and were curious to learn more and the upper Haight and all of its glorious architecture and history served as the perfect backdrop. And since it was just us three (a rarity), we got to ask all sorts of questions. Some infamous and unknown folks have lived and strange events have taken place in this lively neighborhood. Learn about the City's early history of cemeteries to hauntings and possibly some ghost readings with devices, if you dare. Admire the majestic and ornate architectural buildings-Victorians, Edwardians, & more in all their glory along Waller & Page Streets, especially after the sun goes down. Old buildings always seem to create the right spooky and more eerie atmosphere. And end the tour at a haunted bar. Though unsure of what I saw, I look at sidewalks & old homes very differently now. I'm a little spooked. 4 spook-i- licious stars. Year round, but it seems best when daylight savings time is over. PS. Bring a sweater. So the Upper Haight *is* haunted by more than just agro-panhandlers and a few too many fashionista boutiques! My initial expectations were pretty low when my friend told me she got me a ticket to this thing--I was more excited about the prospect of getting drinks afterwards. That all changed when we met Tom, our tour guide (AND Founder & President of the San Francisco Ghost Society!) and began our 16-block journey through the haunted bowels of the Upper Haight. The man is a wealth of information and makes the whole thing fun. Don't go into this gig expecting to actually see ghosts...this isn't that kind of thing. We did learn quite a bit about the history of San Francisco and why it's one of the most haunted cities in the country. Aside from giving us some great historical tidbits, Tom took us to quite a few haunted sites and explained the theories behind what may be going on there. I won't get into any of the details so as not to spoil the secrets of the tour, but it is an awesome two-hour experience. Meet with our tour guide, Tom who quickly checked us in. We went into the coffee shop and ordered some fruity energy drinks to help perk us up for the two hour tour. Tour: I appreciated the fact that alot of the information he shared was first historically researched. It gave more credibility to the stories. I learned alot of good history about Haight and saw some pretty cool architectural homes. Tom did some raffles and gave some small, fun prizes throughout the tour. We ended the tour at a haunted bar. Suggestions: comfortable walking shoes as you will be walking 1.5 miles (16 blocks). Upside is that there is no uphill walking. Also bring a jacket or sweater as you will get cold. read more

This is such a FUN tour! Tommy was such an awesome tour guide. We learned not only ghost stories, but also about history of San Francisco. I liked how Tommy related to us, he really is entertaining and a good story teller. He is very passionate about his city and it makes you all the more excited to be there. I think the tour is OK. It is, in my opinion, worth more like $5 rather than $20 that is charged. I was expecting it to be eerie and scary, but it was more like tit-bits and short stories. Whats hot: - Its a good walk around the haight area. Mildly interesting architecture. - There are around 8 gifts "raffled" away. This builds excitement and keeps things lively. Whats not: - I was expecting it to be mildly scary/eerie. It was not. - At $20, it is expensive. - Stories seem kind of vague and fabricated (yes, I know its a ghost tour, but they were vague even by those standards). - Is kind of long and slow paced. read more

This ghost tour kicked ass! I went with 15 friends for my birthday and it exceeded my expectations! I thought this would be a goofy but fun time. It was funny and goofy but also really informative. Tommy is so well educated on the paranormal and I felt like I left the tour with a greater understanding of how/why people experience hauntings. The tour also covered the architecture and a general history of the haight that really gave his stories some context. We didn't see any ghosts but a friends phone failed when we were trying to talk to one. If you have any sensitive people with you, don't worry, the tour is creepy but not scary. Tommy himself is an incredible tour guide. He clearly loves what he does and brings a positive energy to the tour. He's a great storyteller and had answers for any question you throw at him. He's friendly, involved and even raffles off prizes during the tour which is a nice touch. Couldn't be more satisfied, $20 a person is money well spent. I wish he did tours all over the city. This was a little below OK. I thought we'd have a blast as the Yelp reviews were quite good and overhyped everything. I thought I would enjoy this walking tour but was sorely disappointed. We came during our vacation to SF in August. I didn't like how we walked for about 1-2 miles but there really wasn't that much good stuff or information that I couldn't google. If I were to walk two miles in his shoes, I would make the "Haunted" Haight tour more haunted and drop the architecture angle. There were only a few ghost stories and not very well substantiated. He is a very knowledgeable historian and does not try to convince you of the authenticity of his stories, he simply says what happened and any research that backs up his story. It's a great neighborhood to tour, he guaranteed that there were no hills on the walking tour and he was right. He also goes over the architecture of the houses which was very interesting. Overall, very informational and interesting. It was $20 per person, you can pay online and you receive an e-ticket. It was a two hour tour. The stories were great, hearing them gave me goosebumps. If you're a history geek and want to learn some interesting factoids on the Upper Haight neighborhood, this is worth it. The tour lasts about 90 minutes and stars/finishes near Coffee to the People. You'll take a stroll through the Panhandle and learn about cemetery re-locations in the area, then see the spot Buck Naked was shot at in the early 90s. Then it's up to Page Street to see the house Jim Jones lived at in the 70s, along with a lesson in architecture of William Cranston. Then it's on to the Grateful Dead house, and a Janis Joplin's old apartment where a murder in has left the sidewalk supposedly haunted. As far as the supernatural aspect of it, I would say if you're looking to see firm evidence of ghosts existing, you'll be disappointed. But, it it's still fun to check out. read more

I love a good ghost tour, but I've been spoiled. The first few ghost tours I ever went on were in the incredibly haunted small town of Alton, Illinois, where we were able to go inside pretty much every haunted place on the tour. As a result, haunted walking tours like this one will never really get the full 5 stars from me. That aside, this was a pretty good tour. I spent a weekend in September 2009 doing a couple of ghost tours in San Francisco, and this was the last one of the weekend. I appreciated Tommy's deep research into the neighborhood, and the silly gag gifts he brought along to hand out at various points during the 2 hour tour. In general, it seems like there are 2 main types of ghost tour hosts - the technical, gadget-y ones and the Natural Born Storytellers. Tommy was definitely more of the first type. That's not to say his stories were lacking, but they felt more facts-oriented than dramatic or eerie. He's very matter-of-fact in delivery. The tour itself is well-planned and includes a lot of neat information about famous Haight-Ashbury residents of days gone by, as well as the architecture and insane pricing of the area. There was no point on this tour where I felt like someone might have a truly paranormal experience. I've been on tours where the night feels alive with the possibility that you might actually see a ghost, but this one felt more like an extremely fascinating lecture. If you enjoy history, you will almost definitely be very happy with this tour. If you want more of a ghostly experience where the guide really tries to play things up and make you feel the "haunted energy", you'll probably be happier with another tour. Of course, for most of us it won't be an either / or proposition. My last piece of advice - bundle up! The guide brought along an extra blanket, but that doesn't help much if you're on a tour with 20 other people. It gets very cold at night. read more

We went on Halloween night and of course the group was HUGE...about 60 ppl. Tommy did a really good job with speaking loudly, but we opted to slide up to the front at most stops. It drizzled on/off through out the entire tour so we did not get to go deeper into the parks unfortunately. Loved the history that he provided. Loved his passion for what he does. Don't be scared, go ahead and pay the $20 and get ready for an informative two hour tour of the Upper Haight! Tommy Natzband leads a spirited excursion which covers 16 blocks (2.5 miles) without having to chug up any hills! He is a wealth of information, not only about the paranormal but the history and architecture of the Haight. I didn't know the Panhandle park was created to find out what trees grew best in S.F.'s climate! I didn't know Buck Naked was shot near the statue of McKinley (how ironic!) We saw where Jim Jones lived with his family in 1976 and saw 'J.Jones, 1976' scrawled in the concrete outside and learned that Jim Jones Jr. scribbled that all those years ago. As there were only nine of us on the tour, it was much more intimate than his Halloween night tour which brings out 80 or so folks. We learned about EMFs, EVPs and all the other ghost hunting equipment he uses and had a chance to use it on a haunted spot just outside a residence where Janis lived. A young man was shot and killed on the sidewalk here and people hear heavy boots running outside from time to time even though no one is around! In an effort to do new things on vacations or less mainstream touristy stuff, we decided to start doing Ghost Tours, starting in Galena, IL. On our trip to SF, we wanted to find a decent tour and searched the internet to book a reservation. We decided upon the Haunted Haight Walking Tour. It was only $20 so we booked it. The tour guide Tommy was very personable and passionate about his tour. Not only was he very knowledgeable at the paranormal field, but he also was very knowledgeable about the history of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. This included the hauntings themselves, the architecture of the neighborhood, the local and national celebrities, etc. The tour itself was very easy and fun. The best part was no hills on the tour. We also had prizes during the tour for added bonus. It took about 1.5 hours, but it was quick. It went by too fast. I highly recommend this tour and Tommy will give you other activities to check out if interested. read more

I really enjoyed the tour, especially because of the variety of stories and points of interest. The tour guide, Tommy, is super personable and really makes the tour a fun time for all. The ghost stories are interesting, but the surprise for me was really the spots where famous and infamous people lived in the Haight's Hay Day AND the very pretty architecture around there that Tommy was keen on pointing out for us, including a few things seen off in the distance as well. I think this is a great way to have a Haight Street experience with a fun twist: Ghost Stories! And I actually did end up getting a few creepy feelings at certain locations. I love that Johnny Netzband! He is so knowledgeable, personable, accessible, and funny. I have run and driven through the Haight a million times in the last couple of decades, but as of tonight the way I go through the Haight is different. I had no idea what lay below and above me, and now I know... The tour (that Tommy actually researched, wrote, and created) was fascinating and fun. Tommy knows much of the history and architectural aspects of the neighborhood, and of San Francisco. he is also very informed about the paranormal, in a quirky and light way. For example, it is wild how many famous people lived in the few blocks we walked. Janis Joplin, Grateful Dead, Patty Hearst, Jim Jones, Hells Angels, Robert Cranston, and Charles Manson... this tour highlights and stops outside many historical houses the famous and infamous lived in. And I have to mention the wacky little prizes Johnny gives out! I think we got the best two: A CD of Magic how-to over 20 tricks, and Wooly Willy. Oh *and* he is a vegetarian!! No animals were hurt in the making of the tour :) And Johnny didn't mind that I stopped to say hello to every dog we passed...even in the Panhandle where there is a cute pooch every two steps. The Haunted Haight Walking Tour something I was looking forward to on my recent trip to San Francisco. We took this tour on a saturday night in December so it was pretty cold. Remember to bundle up really well and wear something to cover your ears. The tour was scheduled to start at 8 and the meeting place was in front of a coffee shop in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood. When we got to the coffee shop I was a little worried because I didn't see anyone else outside waiting. I had to double check to make sure it was the right meeting place. When the tour guide, Tommy, showed up we learned that my girlfriend and I would be the only ones going on this tour. Instead of hurrying because he only had 2 people on the tour, he took the time and effort to really get to know us and befriend us. I was really appreciative of this because he could have easily decided to just do his job and get the night over with. The tour itself was really interesting and fun. Not only did we get some great ghost stories about the area, but Tommy knew a ton of the historical aspects of the neighborhood. It's amazing how many famous people lived in that area. From Janis Joplin to Charles Manson, this tour covers many historical houses that the both famous and infamous once inhabited. What was also surprising was the amount of knowledge he had about the architecture of the buildings. After the tour ended, Tommy stuck around to make sure we knew how to get back to our hotel. That's going the extra mile. I recommend this tour if you're looking to explore a new area, hear some interesting ghost stories about real places, learn some fun history and spend a couple of hours walking with friends and loved ones. If you're looking for an extremely creepy or startling tour, this probably isn't it. It is also probably a better tour for people who aren't from the area and haven't been to the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood before because the new element adds to the sense of excitement. Also, the smaller the group, the more fun and spooky it'll be. I guess that goes for most things of this nature. Ask a lot of questions. Let's start w/ the host/curator/inventor of this tour, Tommy. He's an absolute historian of ghosts/hauntings/murders/strange happenings in The Haight (and San Francisco is general). I learned a ton about San Francisco, and it made me want to go on more historical tours. A lot of ghost tour guides are totally cheesy and make bad jokes, or are very new agey or total kooks, you spend more time rolling your eyes than having fun - not Tommy. He's a very straight forward & factual storyteller & the tour registers more like the best history class you've ever had w/ a few goosebumps, rather than a full on "holy S^** I'm scared". He's treats the paranormal & hauntings like true science, which makes the tour all the more enjoyable & believable. 2 hours, $20/each, no hills (so it's good for out of shape visitors or older folks), tons of kitschy Halloween prizes given away between each stop, & the tour ends at a haunted bar. 5 stars all the way - so glad I spent my Halloween evening w/ Tommy & the ghosts of The Haight. read more

We decided to do the Haunted Haight Walking Tour one weekend. I really like the fact that the tour was held at night....inda gives you that fun, creepy feeling. We went with a group. At first when we arrived at the coffee shop we thought it was a little weird of a place. The tour guide Tommy arrived and was really nice. He explained the tour to us and gave us an insight on what were going to expect! Best part is if you cant stand hills there is ZERO! The tour seems long, but it goes really quickly! We learned alot of information regarding the history of Haight. I was expecting more of a spooky feeling. I thought we were going to take walks through haunted houses. Despite the lack the tour was overall a blast! I do recommend this for familys over a certain age due to the history involved! read more

Whether you're trying to get your 'ghost hunter' on, or just looking for something fun and interesting to do, the Haunted Haights Walking Tour is totally worth it. Tommy, the creator of the tour, is friendly and knowledgeable; the time and effort he's put into developing the information he shares on the tour is evident. Lots of interesting stories and facts about SF ghost history will wet any ghost hunter's whistle, or even give a 'regular person' cool conversation topics to impress friends. We won't give any spoilers, but the tour consists of some pretty cool, ghostly landmarks. Tommy brings along a few ghost hunting tools that he actually lets the group use to try to contact 'the other side'. No matter the occasion: date night, family outing, birthday party, or just something totally random, the tour is a memorable option. We would rate the tour PG 13; the tour isn't too gory and shouldn't give anyone nightmares, but Tommy does discuss real life occurrences (murders, hauntings, etc.) that could scare younger kids, so use discretion when bringing the kiddos. The tour lasts about 2 hours, and Tommy has thought of everything. He has a bathroom stop along the route and he has even taken the effort to ensure the tour has virtually no hills! I went on the tour on Halloween, 2015 and it was a lot of fun and a memorable experience. The weather was perfect for the night - there was a light fog that added a spooky, mystical quality. As someone who enjoys both Halloween and the unknown, it was something that I greatly enjoyed and would do again. The tour guide is knowledgeable about SF history as well as ghost hunting in general. He is eager to answer any questions you might have and obviously does this for personal enjoyment and not just monetary reasons. No ghosts were present on the tour, but the stories are effective in helping you to imagine their existence, or at least leave you wanting to learn more about their sightings. The group for the evening was pretty large - I want to say somewhere around 60 people - and you are encouraged to wear costumes on Halloween. One person also brought her dog (who had a costume too), so it is dog friendly. I would have brought mine but he hates long walks. Bringing small children is probably a bad idea, due to some of the graphic and violent nature of the stories. The raffles will likely appeal to teens and mature children, though, if you feel they are old enough to come. I noticed a few teens, but most of the group were adults. I came alone and many others did as well, so you shouldn't feel pressured to bring friends/family (although I am sure that would be fun too). Despite being called "Haunted Haight", there is very little to do with ghosts on this tour. It is mostly a history of the Ashbury-Haight area with a couple of ghost stories thrown in there for flavor. While I appreciated the history lesson and extensive review of Robert Cranston's architecture, I was expecting ghostly stories and tales of hauntings; instead he prefaces the tour by saying that a lot of reports of ghosts are "bullshit." Disappointing. Also, there is a lot of dead (ha) time when walking from one area to the next. As an improvement to his tour, Tommy should consider telling more stories as you venture to the next place. Maybe additional ghostly stories about San Fran (not just the Ashbury-Haight area)? Just a suggestion. Overall, a nice walking tour, but not what was advertised. read more

My family of eight (My wife and I along with our six children, aged 12 to 25) booked a 'group' tour with Tommy on a Tuesday night as part of a cross country trip. The tour was a highlight of our vacation. The walk is a great combination of history and the paranormal, and Tommy is an engaging and informative guide. We got a fascinating tour of this historic area, saw many local places of interest, learned and absorbed local facts and legends, and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Our youngest has some developmental issues, and Tommy was great with him as well. I can't recommend this enough to anyone visiting (or living in) San Francisco! Tommy is an awesome tour guide! He knows tons about history in the upper Haight. I was expecting tons of ghost stories but that was not the case, however this was not a let down whatsoever. He had so much historical information about the area that I am officially intrigued with old San Francisco. Tommy is super friendly and funny and made the tour go by super fast. He gave us raffle tickets at the beginning of the tour and every now and then he would give us prizes, which in my opinion just made everything a lot more fun! And another plus is he shows and explains the gadgets he uses and even lets you use them! Totally awesome! Paid for tickets for a tour on July 25, got a call telling me the tour is canceled, kinda lame, but the real issue is I still haven't received a refund for the two tickets i purchased. I called the brown bag ticket agency and they said they can not give me a refund until the owner of the tour informs them it was canceled. read more

Now I want to preface this review with that I have been on quite a view ghost walks and well, I give them myself in Central Indiana. And also, I just arrived in SF the same day I took the tour so was a bit on the tired side. So take it for what its worth. I am not a competitor, just in the same field. First of all - the guide and owner, Tommy, is a great guy. Really enjoyed his enthusiasm and especially his historic knowledge. That and the Haight area architecture was the best part of this tour. And the parks. The Ghost stories - not so much. If you have a Ghost tour and you are fully aware that your first 1/2 (more like 3/5) is less of hauntings but more oddness and architecture - I think you need to replan your tour. Just my opinion. The "save the best stories for last" approach is not bad, but it does seem to drag on a bit in the beginning. And thats from a total history nut like me. If someone is less interested in History and all about Ghost stories.... I don't know. Maybe Tommys approach of 90% or 99% of ghost stories he hears are just a cases of the person needing a plumber or electrician scares people off with more stories he could use. Lastly, I read some of the other reviews on here and some like it, some don't, but I totally thought the raffling off of Halloweenish trinkets and candy was a waste of time and distractions from the great history and atmosphere and honest/serious/fun approach of Tommys story telling. Some of those raffling off stops to break up the walks between stops were welcome and useful (despite its route being astoundingly low on hills it still quite the distance) but I don't understand why he would do this. read more
