Rose our Ghost Tour guide...@ The City's Original Shoreline - Hotaling Alley
    Cheryl M.

A friend always wanted to do a SF Chinatown Ghost Tour and why not play tourist for an evening. The Haunt Ghost Tour was not like what you see on the Discovery or Travel Channels (love those paranormal shows!) where you're walking in the darkness under the City, being locked up in an asylum or penitentiary and screaming every time you hear a noise. This tour was a short 2 miles (and 2 hours) and more about the history and dark past of SF Chinatown. Our storyteller for the evening was Rose, a 2nd generation ghost hunter. Enthusiastically knowledgable, friendly, and engaging which made for an interesting and enjoyable tour. Each person was given an EMF meter for ghost hunting and explained what it means when it beeps red! Activity was detected at the historic Hotaling Building built by Anson Parsons Hotaling for his whiskey business in 1866. Miraculously, it survived the 1906 earthquake and known to produce positive EMF readings... though can't be confirmed if it's the owner himself. Plan accordingly as no bathrooms available unless you hit up a restaurant or bar. Be courteous and buy something! Plenty of street parking (California Street) and best to park where the tour ends which is near California/Grant Ave. End Note: TBH, I was a little worried not of the dead but more of the "living" and crime that's been quite prevalent. The area is almost a ghost town (pun intended) but fortunately, our group was about 25 (mostly tourists) and felt "safe" with plenty of people in the area...and yes, some odd people walking around too. Tour will be over around 10pm.

Wow what a great experience! I've always wanted to go ghost hunting so I was super excited to do this because I am really into history too. I learned so much about SF and all the crazy things that happened. So many great stories! Our tour guide Emma was fantastic. She had such a great energy about her and she's very knowledgeable. Suuuuper funny by the way. Highly recommend her!

Ramen is the perfect dinner after the tour.

Bday fun for the wifey was the plan and this tour was not bland! Emma the tour guide was so good and told us about graves made of wood. Totally worth you time and that is the end of this rhyme! I would totally go again even though we did not see any ghosts.

I surprised my husband on his birthday with this tour as he wanted to do it for a long time. Booking online was easy and we met at the foot of Transamerica pyramid building. The group was very punctual so we left on time. It was a 1.5 hours walking tour and our host Aliya was very enthusiastic throughout the tour. We did a mix of SF history, haunted stories and also trued to communicate with the spirits using some tools. Overall it was a good tour as a fun activity for adults but I just didn't find it spooky enough!

Very good tour with a great tour guide (Jamie). Was pleasantly surprised by the info and the use of facts vs pushing supernatural material.

This is one of few SF walking-tour companies that still offers tours after sunset (the Haunted SF tour). Currently they have five tours: (1) The Free SF Tour: Intro to SF, local tips, history and friends (2) Food Crawl! Chinatown + North Beach (3) Haunted SF: Ghosts, Murder and Mystery (4) Haight-Ashbury: The Free Love Movement (5) Radical SF: The Castro + The Mission Our group did the 75-minute Haunted SF Ghost Tour at 8:30 PM. Tickets must be purchased on the website ahead of time and each ticket is $18 (not including tax). We met our tour guide Mary at the heart statue in Union Square (near the intersection of Post and Powell). Our guide Mary Vice, who also happened to be a drag performer, was a FABULOUS and COMPELLING storyteller! Our group ventured through the Tenderloin (e.g. John's Grill - one of the oldest restaurants in SF) and various hotels (e.g. The Westin St. Francis, Hilton, etc.). Every time we stopped at a particular spot, our guide always had chilling stories about murders, haunted rooms, serial killers, etc. Absolutely amazing walking tour! I highly recommend the Haunted SF tour because it is such an unique tour and it also gives you an opportunity to walk off the night's meal!

Sebastian was Gone With The Wind Fabulous with his cape. He was such a wonderful guide. Thanks for the tour!

She checked in with the group often to ensure we could hear and understand her and provided clear directions to the next stop on the tour. The tour was really interesting and a pretty flat 2-mile walk, given the slope of some of the hills in SF. There were noteable stops along the way like the SF's first saloon and "the living room" of Chinatown. These tours are pay-what-you-want at the end. We didn't have cash and the website said they'd accept card; we ended up paying Vicky via PayPal.

Tidbits, such as the existence of a watering hole in the 19th century called the Fierce Grizzly (so named because it had a grizzly chained next to the door) and how today's Chinatown architecture came about after the 1906 earthquake, made our walk memorable and our time with Britt go by fast. The only (slight) disappointment came when we stopped by Caffe Trieste but didn't have time to enjoy their delicious espresso even though a coffee stop was mentioned in the tour description. We highly recommend this walking tour.
