Our tour guide Rose was great. Very informative and skeptical. Not to say she wasn't a believer in paranormal stuff! We had so much fun walking through SF Chinatown learning about the area's colorful history. The Haunt (and Rose!) were one of the highlights of my first trip to SF. The tour goes through historic and safe areas with only a couple steep hills to walk up. It coincided with Chinatown's night market so we got to get a glimpse of the lion and dragon dances through the streets, live music and djs. This is suitable for children since the tour didn't give any gruesome details and was more informative than scary (just what I wanted!). A friend always wanted to do a SF Chinatown Ghost Tour and why not play tourist for an evening. The Haunt Ghost Tour was not like what you see on the Discovery or Travel Channels (love those paranormal shows!) where you're walking in the darkness under the City, being locked up in an asylum or penitentiary and screaming every time you hear a noise. This tour was a short 2 miles (and 2 hours) and more about the history and dark past of SF Chinatown. Our storyteller for the evening was Rose, a 2nd generation ghost hunter. Enthusiastically knowledgable, friendly, and engaging which made for an interesting and enjoyable tour. Each person was given an EMF meter for ghost hunting and explained what it means when it beeps red! Activity was detected at the historic Hotaling Building built by Anson Parsons Hotaling for his whiskey business in 1866. Miraculously, it survived the 1906 earthquake and known to produce positive EMF readings... though can't be confirmed if it's the owner himself. Plan accordingly as no bathrooms available unless you hit up a restaurant or bar. Be courteous and buy something! Plenty of street parking (California Street) and best to park where the tour ends which is near California/Grant Ave. End Note: TBH, I was a little worried not of the dead but more of the "living" and crime that's been quite prevalent. The area is almost a ghost town (pun intended) but fortunately, our group was about 25 (mostly tourists) and felt "safe" with plenty of people in the area...and yes, some odd people walking around too. Updating bc we subsequently took the Hotel Investigation tour and boy oh boy you guys was that WILD-- from Jamie, our extraordinary guide, we learned a ton about the unique history of the place, and of the various assortment of common tools paranormal investigators use. I don't know what we were expecting but it was quite a busy night of activity and the experience there was super interesting and memorable. Nothing scary, but we definitely seemed to get some hot spots of activity that even had our biggest skeptics intrigued. This and the Chinatown tour are just really special and fun events to do to bond with friends, learn history about the area, and maybe even have a paranormal experience like we did on both nights. This walking tour was super fun and original. I really hadn't actually seen these stops in Jackson Square San Francisco near the Financial District. This tour wasn't in North Beach. You could see the Jackson Street sign and it went over to Chinatown. That's cool with me. Said Chinatown was the biggest Chinatown in USA. There were stories of people I hadn't heard about. If you're looking for a unique date idea and if you want to learn more about San Francisco's sketch past... BOOK THIS TOUR! I planned this as a date and my boyfriend had no idea what we were doing until we got there, ha ha ha. Emma was absolutely wonderful. She gave us these devices that sensed electromagnetic fields around us... and apparently a spike in these can mean there is someone.. or something... else around. We walked through various neighborhoods near the Transamerica pyramid area, including Chinatown. Emma was so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about San Francisco's haunted past.. and we learned just SO much on this tour. We even came into contact with what was suspected.. a spirit, or 2. We brought out copper rods to communicate with a spirit in simple yes or no questions. Was it fake? Who really knows...... Still such a cool experience overall. The group was very punctual so we left on time. It was a 1.5 hours walking tour and our host Aliya was very enthusiastic throughout the tour. I love free walking tours and try to attend one whenever I travel nationally or internationally. I was in SF for the weekend and signed up for the morning tour. Our guide was Fischer and he was smart, funny and entertaining. He kept the tour lively despite the weather for the day being quite cold. We had a fairly large group of about 12 people from all over the world and we ended with the same group. Fischer was very knowledgeable about the history and community progression of SF. He explained and showed us how to use the different modes of public transportation in and around SF. We were able to sample some delicious chocolates during the tour. He informed the group about the African American, William Alexander Leidesdorff who was known to be a millionaire and contributed a lot to the Bay area which was very exciting to hear. At the end of the tour, Fischer was very helpful in assisting people with recommendations for places to eat or how to get to their next attraction. I always give the suggested tip amount or more because generally they are worth it and more. The next time you're travelling check your destination to see if they offer free walking tours, you wont be disappointed. read more

The ghost tour was more of a history lesson. We never actually went into any of the haunted areas or had any real chance of seeing ghosts, orbs, etc. The guide was nice and knowledgeable about the area, but it's not an actual ghost tour. Recently back in the city with my teen daughter and really wanted her to do this tour with me, but sadly they are still not back up and running. Where are you guys??? So we opted for the SF Ghost Hunt Tour with a gentleman named Christian. It was ok. My daughter really enjoyed it. I probably would've enjoyed that one more if I didn't have this one to compare it to. Sebastian is SO animated and just an absolutely outstanding storyteller. My fiancé and I took the Haunted Tour for our last night in San Francisco, and it was a great way to spend it! Mary Vice is an incredible host, definitely the reason this tour is as fun as it is. I didn't think it was all that scary, but it's a super fun way to learn some of the more spooky history of SF. And some of the people on our tour definitely did find it scary lol. Either way, I'd definitely recommend giving this a try! Good to know as well, the tour is described as being an hour or so of walking, but you stop a lot to hear the stories, so walking wise it's not bad at all if you're worried about that kind of thing :) read more

Sometimes my timing sucks. I flew out to San Francisco a few days in advance of a conference to hang out and visit friends. Unfortunately, said friends were going to be out of town and I needed to occupy myself. Having seen a lot of the big sights in SF, I decided to look up Free Tours by Foot and see what they had offer. While I generally like FtbF, I found their offerings in town lacking. On a whim, I searched for other free tour options and found Wild SF Walking Tours. Wild SF Walking Tours offers two tours, Chinatown/North Beach and Castro/Mission. I picked the Chinatown tour on a whim, but learned on the tour that if you're thinking of doing both, doing Chinatown first is ideal (I think because of the chronology of the tours). Our tour started in Union Square and there were about 30 of us, some locals, but most not. All of the guides dress in quirky, hipstery outfits; it makes them easy to spot at Union Square. Our guide, Fischer, was great; very knowledgeable, funny and personable. He did a lot to engage us and get us mingling with each other along the tour. It was so friendly and comfortable that when he ended the tour with hugs, this non-hugger didn't feel the slightest bit put off. The tour, approximately three hours, covered a lot of ground and there was even an option of a group Chinese lunch afterwards. We saw lots of touristy and non-touristy areas of the two neighborhoods. There's a lot of walking; it's not at an unreasonable pace, but you should wear comfortable shoes. If you're looking for a good, in-depth tour of a few neighborhoods rich in history, I highly recommend Wild SF. I also recommend bringing water with you, it was a while before our beverage/bathroom stop. TIP: At the end of tour, if you tip $30, you score a free t-shirt. read more

Memo to all tourists (or locals) who find themselves in the SFO area: I implore you to go on a wild SF walking tour. The better half and I were on vaca here early september and this was my first visit to this pleasant west coast city. We wanted to check out the Castro but didn't want to just wander around aimlessly. I'm so grateful I somehow came across this FREE walking tour by a pretty random google search. Reserving a spot online was easy enough but I don't think it's required. The meeting point was easy to find, as was our impeccably dressed guide Wes. After an initial meet and greet with intros and a sing/clap along with Wes we were on our way to the Castro. This initial portion of the tour bordered on being cheesy but everyone had such a good attitude it turned out to be a nice ice breaker. Wes was a natural at bringing together a group of 25 or so total strangers and psyching us up to spend the next 3 hours together strolling around town, chatting and learning about San Fransisco. He seamlessly orchestrated getting us onto the subway to our destination and kept us entertained, laughing, mingling and having a great time. We went on the Castro/Mission tour; it seemed like only 25% of the time was spent in Castro which we wished we had explored a little more. Toward the 2nd half of the tour there seemed to be a lot of listening to Wes, who has an encyclopedia in his head devoted to local history and culture. It was cool to hear it all but I found myself having to try harder to take in all the info. That said I was impressed with everything he had to share. Our tour group consisted of mostly young European tourists; in fact there were more Germans than Americans! Not sure if this is typical, but I liked hearing my fellow tour folks tell me about why there were in the city, where they came from etc. I really hope these guys expand and get more publicity. My friend and I would have liked to go on the night tour (especially since it was the day after Halloween) but the guide was a no-show. We waited for 30 minutes at the spot designated (came 20 minutes early to find the heart statue on Post and Powell) and ended up calling the number in the email to ask where the guide was. We were talking to another couple who appeared to be waiting as well. The guys on the phone weren't able to get ahold of the guide so they cancelled on us 20 minutes after the tour was supposed to start. Thankfully we got the refund that we asked for. They also offered to let us on another tour but this was our last day in the city and I wouldn't want to waste another part of my day waiting on another no-show again. It ended up being a complete waste of a trip down to the Union Square area. Also waste of a dinner because my friend just grabbed something quick nearby to eat before our tour time, but we could have went out somewhere less touristy for dinner if we had known in advance that the tour wasn't going to happen. What a disappointing way to end what was a really great weeklong stay in SF. Beware of no-shows. Register at your own risk. I can't recommend this company unfortunately. read more

My husband and I have been in the Bay Area for about 8 months now. We had visited SF many times, but always found ourselves disenchanted with it and what the city now represents. I somehow stumbled upon Wild SF Walking Tours and thought it looked interesting since we wanted to check out the Castro and Mission areas. I was especially interested in learning about Harvey Milk since he is in fact a New Yorker. I had been longing to learn about the fight for gay rights in SF as this is a topic close to my heart. A side note to Wild SF - Harvey went to college at University of Albany but he is actually from downstate, NOT upstate. ;-) Big difference between the two areas, kind of like LA vs. SF. The tour of the Castro was AWESOME! Our tour guide was energetic and full of many great facts. It was a lot of fun to visit the Castro, kind of like being back east in Provincetown. We also took a tour of the Mission and enjoyed that too. It was great to see Dolores Park and the beautiful murals of the Mission. I think it is important that our guide brought up the gentrification of the area and the topic of the lower/middle classes being squeezed out due to the high rents. We live in Silicon Valley, so we can relate to this (to a lesser degree). I would highly recommend this tour to anyone looking to explore the Mission or Castro. read more

We went on our 4th Wild SF walking tour yesterday - the food crawl around North Beach (Little Italy) and Chinatown and it was amazing. Wild SF does the BEST walking tours of the city. We did our first tour as tourists and we now live in the area and still use them as a our guides to find out new stuff about a wonderful city. One of the best tours I've been on! I saw a fllyer for the Wild SF Walking Tours at Amsterdam Hostel. I actually live only 40 miles from SF, but I'm relatively new to the area, so when I had a friend visiting, we decided this looked like a fun way to learn about the city. It's certain that The Captain knows a lot more about the history of SF than I do! I learned so much on this tour, and we laughed a lot. We started on the Chinatown tour, had lunch with Captain, then went on the North Beach tour and joined him for dinner afterwards! I really feel like I know Chinatown and North Beach so much better now, and I love knowing the history and fun facts about these neighborhoods! This was a great way to spend the evening in SF. The night was cold and foggy and perfect for an evening of tales about some of the city's darker history. Wes was a great host and guide and an awesome story teller who regaled us with spooky, creepy, and insightful stories about deaths, murders, and strange happenings in some of the historic spots of the city. Based on Yelp reviews, I took the Chinatown tour with Fischer. I had a fantastic experience! And by the time it had ended, I'd signed up for the Haight/Ashbury tour that same afternoon with J Jo! Amazing value and highly informative plus entertaining! Wear comfy shoes and throw yourself into the experience... Fischer is animated, interesting and knowledgeable. He made the history of Chinatown come alive. His profound respect for the people and their culture was apparent and he shared a little about his family's Chinese heritage as well. We learned about The Gold Rush, the earthquake and subsequent fires and destruction of 80% of San Francisco. We heard about the hopeful immigrants seeking freedom and fortune and the legacy of documentation and "paper sons" and so much more. We got a colorful and sensitive history lesson delivered by a genuinely caring guide. There were a couple of opportunities to meet fellow tour takers and the group had fun together. Fischer invites you to have lunch after, which two of us did, and it was delicious and even more interesting to chat with him. Each tour guide follows up with an email thanking participants and sharing more recommendations for things to see in the area. He was a groovy, creative troubadour sharing fascinating stories and stopping periodically to illustrate with renditions of songs from Country Joe, The Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. I was vaguely familiar with the hippie movement but now I'm completely intrigued and impressed at what happened in a few years. J Jo set the scene with his eccentric appearance and artistic delivery, and his guitar slung over his shoulder and he seemed timeless. Our group was very international and different and he won everyone over immediately. It was trippy and wonderful! By the end, I wanted to become a Deadhead. I learned so much about how the cultural revolution that took place in that part of SF informed the entire country and a generation and had repercussions all over the Western world. It was educational but memorable because of our artistic and wonderful guide. Again, there was an obvious respect if not reverence for the local culture and current residents, too, which I appreciated. Maz was our guide for the Radical SF: The Castro + The Mission tour and we loved it! It was excellent two mile walk trough the two neighborhoods. Our guide was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The tour had serious and funny moments, which I thought was good. He played the ukulele a couple times, which I also loved! His passion and vast knowledge really came through. I would recommend the tour for both locals and tourists. I'm from out of town and learned a lot about the long history of the area, and many interesting facts about the recent history. Maz did not sugar coat the hard parts and he did a good job of giving all sides to the stories. Also, at the end of the tour our guide had lots of recommendations for more things to do around town, food, drink, music etc... We were looking for something a little more unique and along the lines of the "real" thing, and this certainly delivered.
