Somehow, having lived in German Village and been in the area often after that, I never made it here. I assumed it was a gift shop, maybe with tchotchkes and kitchenware, German snacks, German Village souvenirs. I was nearby today and time to kill, so I went in, finally. And: it's a wine shop. It does say "wine and gifts" outside but I figured it leaned towards gifts. And I am not a wine drinker. If I were, it looks like a heckuva good wine shop. There are also plenty of local beers in a cooler. A few gifts, mainly in the form of sarcastic cocktail napkins, drinking accessories, etc. Not my kind of place, but I will be directing "winos" here. read more

Really great wine selection ranging anywhere from inexpensive to some of the higher more expensive wines. I personally find the organization of it easy for finding what you're looking for. I personally have not dealt too much with the staff as I do feel like I am knowledgeable in wine and haven't needed too much in terms of recommendations or finding something. read more

What more could you want in a wine shop! This is the perfect little cozy place. I want to live here, lol! They have such a wonderful selection of wines and everything is fairly priced. The employees are very helpful and knowledgeable. They actually have a decent amount of wines here that seem really unique and that I've never seen before in regular grocery stores, so I usually try to pick up something new every time I come. They also have a cute little bar in the shop as well so it'd be fun to come for a drink and then take a bottle home with you. The people who work here are so knowledgeable, you can walk in and describe what you want and they will give you 5 options with various price points. They are fast, nice and I don't even look myself anymore, I tell them what we are looking for and they give me options and I trust them because they are never wrong! read more

Really like both parts of this establishment! I'm not knowledgeable about wine, but they had a VERY extensive selection, plus a corner with beer and soda. They have a little wine bar and some tables, where the owner is happy to pour you some to try. She was extremely nice and helpful. Best of all, they have a store cat. There's also a laundromat next door with the same name, so I'm assuming they are owned by the same people. It is a really cute, very retro place, with everything you need in a place to wash your clothes: coin machine, soda machine, sink, tables, benches, reading material, and of course, a scale that gives insight to your personality [for the low cost of 1 cent]. But they don't like when you bring blankets. My friends and I go to OSU but come all the way down there to do our laundry, because it's a really nice place and a fun trip. I was a little concerned moving from Northern California, only a short drive to Napa and Sonoma, that I wasn't going to have the options for libations to which I've grown accustomed. Hausfrau Haven put my fears to rest. What a great selection of wine and a good selection of local and import beer. The people are kind and helpful there. Great little wine shop, tons of selection. However, the grey haired gentleman working there must have been having a bad day. When I went to do some research of a few bottles of wine, I noticed there was little cell service. The names of the WiFi suggest that it is for patrons of the shop. I asked if I could have the password, and was given a condescending NO with a giggle along the side, and instantly felt unwelcome. When I asked for help finding Medoc, he said "any of the ones that say Medoc on them." I did not want to buy wine from here after that, but I did because... because wine! read more

Known to locals for the extent of it's wine selection, it has a good assortment of magazines, funky oddities, and sundries. If you are looking for greeting cards other than the bland collection at your super market, drug store, Hallmark, this is a place NOT inclined to kiss the butt of the American Family Bigotry Brigade. It's beloved by Columbus' elite, sophisticated crowd, many of whom DO drive a distance to enjoy it's welcoming ambience. Very unique place! Not only is it a bar, but this small shop sells wines and other goodies! We came here because some friends live in the neighborhood and are regulars. Wine was always filled promptly and they brought our table snacks (popcorn, m&m's). I'd definitely frequent this place if I lived in the area! read more

Really neat store with a pretty good wine selection. They have a great selection of regions and prices. Some of the wines I saw there I have not seen for sale before in the Columbus area. It's well laid out so it's not hard to find a particular type of wine you're looking for. Yes there are better wine stores in Columbus but this one works just fine for the people of German Village and it's a great place to just stop into if you are going for a walk down there. They have some craft beer but not much. They keep it tucked away in the back in a couple of refrigerators. Even though it is a small selection is it s a decent selection of the popular local stuff like Bell's Oberon. Lots of cool knick knacks if you are looking for gifts for people. The prices for the stuff is a little high but I don't think you're going to find those gifts they sell anywhere else in Columbus. read more

I'm not sure what to think of Hausfrau Haven. Aside from its silly German name, this store is decent -- but a bit strange. They have a great selection of wine and beer. OK, that's cool. Once you wander to the opposite side of the store, you find they carry greeting cards and a few party supplies. Weird. Then there's the selection of kitschy gifts. Weirder. This is my favorite wine shop. The wine selection is a hit! There is a vast range of prices and varietals with hidden vineyard gems. The person picking the wine has excellent taste, you could really walk in blindfolded and pick an excellent bottle. This wine shop also has a bar in it. This is the only place my husband and I go to buy wine. They allow you to purchase a mix and match case and receive 10% off, something we do at least once a month. They have a great selection of wines, from Crane Lake to much more expensive ( I would not know what they are, since I am limited to only purchasing wine under $20). The people who work there are exceptionally knowledgable and always help us find new wines or have some suggestions for wines under $10. Attached to the place , runs a laundry, old machinery, disrepair, on the day that I used, 6 machines were dead, insert a note in the cash machine caught my money. This place is very dangerous! Today I went there with the intent of getting a birthday card and walked out with two bottles of wine....no card. I already have a stock of greeting cards at home, so I don't know who I was fooling? They have such a good variety of quality spirits and most importantly they gladly keep stock of my favorite: Cantele Primitivo, a hard find in Ohio. I love this place! I've been twice on Friday evenings to sample the featured selection of wines at the bar in the back of the shop, and both experiences were nothing short of perfect. Very Good selection for wine, pricing is decent, not high but not super low either on the major producers. All of the major wine producing regions are represented, even some of the less well known areas of Cali like Monterey. The guy working when I was there was not particularly knowledgeable nor had he actually tried many of the wines, and despite this he seemed a bit pretentious. Personally I Prefer Wine on High in the Short North area for my wine purchases, but seeing as I moved from Victorian to German Village I'm sure I'll head here for convenience-sake. read more

I've found a lot of great gift ideas here! Wine or champagne is always an appropriate thank you to the host or acquaintance you may not know well, but how far do you drive to find something unique or that they haven't already tried? This place has a great assortment of both local and higher-quality bottles, and also the cry-pillow-girls-night bottom shelf stuff with cute labels. The staff exudes a passion for their shop and genuinely cares to help the customers find what they're looking for - though not seeming pushy or arrogant about their expertise. They also have a bar that they open to the public on Fridays and Saturdays for tastings. It's something different and fun to check out down in GV. I've been a couple times on Fridays for an early start to the night, and it's been a good size crowd, not stuffy and if you are actually interested in wine knowledge or want your tinder date to think you are, then it's a perfect time to chat up the staff and show off. I'm not much of a wine connoisseur so it was quite a crapshoot to walk in looking for a birthday bottle for a friend of mine. The gentleman there was polite, factual and sensitive to what I was looking for in a gift, and he hooked me up with a deep red french table wine that my friend greatly enjoyed. I was just on my way to a meeting down on the southside when it became apparent that I had onion breath. I was on 3rd street in German Village and decided to run into this place. Although I live in the neighborhood I have never been, unless you count the time I was being hassled inside the adjacent laundry mat and tried to seek refuge here but it was closed! I always assumed it was just a wine shop and it is with a bunch of other delightful things mixed in. Upon entering I was pleased with the old school deli treats the I am used to seeing in your typical shady bodega in NYC. The counter is full of random throw back gum. I scored a pack of Clark's Teaberry for 25 cents! They also have other coin candy like single servings of swedish fish for a nickel and little bags of chips for under a buck. Since I got my gum quick and on cheap I decided to poke around for awhile. There is a serious stock of wine here at all price levels and from vineyards around the country. In the back there are two coolers of beer. As I was eyeing the Rasputin Imperial Russian the owner came over to tell me that although the beer stock is smaller than the wine they will order anything you like at a competitive price. Nice. Just as I was leaving I realized there was practically an entire store on the other side. The selection is random...a flamingo wine holder? They also have a large stock of greeting cards and gag gifts. As far as a neighborhood wine, beer, and liquor store this place will fulfill all of your needs both practical and whimsical..but probably not worth the trip if you are not a local. read more

You can find almost any area you want and in a price range that is always fair. If you are lucky, you can ask her to take you downstairs to her cave. Amazing. Pretty empty when I stepped in this chilly Saturday afternoon. However, the atmosphere inside was nothing close to empty. Surrounded by bottles of the finest wine and the charm of this old Village establishment, I felt right at home on my first visit. After a nice greeting from the cashier I headed straight to the back where the beer was (sorry wine enthusiasts, I don't know what I'm doing with grapes). They have a great local selection (Seventh Son, Jackie O's, North High, Mad Tree, and Rhinegeist). I LOVE local brews. They also have a good selection of regional beers including quite a variety of Bell's and a few other Michigan suds. I grabbed a spring seasonal 6 pack and a single stout from Jackie O's and can't wait to try them. The bar on the other side of the wine/beer selection looked almost out of a movie and I can't wait to come back with some friends at a busier time and see what that is like. read more
