She was fortunate to find her dream gown: a $1300 gown for $299. Can't beat that! There were many gowns in good shape for great prices; my daughter's a size 12 so she had a fair number to choose from; I think she tried on at least 10. The consultant was very helpful but not at all pushy. The décor is plush 1970s (original) and quite comfortable, but for these prices I wouldn't care if it were in an outlet mall. Now, the downside. Naturally, when you buy a gown at a clearance center, it will likely need some alterations. The seamstress there said they would soon stop offering alterations on site but that I should call her in early September as she also works from home. So I called her right after Labor Day and she told me she was booked through October. Boo! However, she gave me the name of another seamstress in Janesville who turned out to be awesome working under time pressure. So the first seamstress redeemed herself a wee bit. One more thing: there were many, many bridesmaid dresses there at terrific prices, but the mother-of-the-bride section was almost non-existent. Bottom line: go here first just in case you luck out like my daughter did.

They have imperfections, tears, stains, etc. If you're crafty and ok with a fixer upper, this is a good place to go! I got some ideas on dress styles and will take those to Vera in Madison. There wasn't much traffic at this location, so we were helped right away. It is pretty far out, but it's nice for a fun little weekend pop-in, if you are in the area.

After being measured once, I came back and it was like the dress was custom made for me. On top of that, Mahin clearly loves what she does. She made me feel so comfortable and welcome, and even let me bring my grandparents who can't make it to my wedding. I think she was as excited as I was when I found the perfect dress. The outside of the building doesn't look like much, but don't let the appearance fool you. There's a huge selection inside, with lots of different styles. Highly recommended!

I scheduled my appointment which they were nice about - they have good store hours. I explained what I wanted and my price range. They didn't have the type of dress I was looking for - tea length, strapless, corset back - but I picked out some dresses from the stuffy old rooms to try on. After trying them on Mahin said "I have just the dress for you." She brought in a dress that was very pretty, and a little more than DOUBLE my price range. I tried it on anyways, which I shouldn't have. It was an amazing dress and we sucked it up and bought it. My "prize" was a veil up to $200. I explained I didn't want a veil but rather a birdcage, which they have, and she said the "prize" didn't cover that I would have to get a veil or nothing. They added that if my bridesmaids bought their dresses from them they would receive a discount so we scheduled an appointment. When we came for that appointment she seemed annoyed by us, maybe she was having a bad day. I had one girl who was too little for the dress we ended up choosing so they gave us a book to look through for junior brides and flower girls. We didn't find anything we liked and said we'd look elsewhere for that last dress. Fast forward several weeks and I receive a call saying my dress was in. She said she noticed that I had 5 bridesmaids but that we had only ordered 4 dresses and she hadn't ordered them yet because she was waiting on the 5th one to decide on a dress. I explained that we had decided the day we were there not to order the 5th dress from her and she was quite rude saying that I never told her that and now the dresses may not arrive on time. I asked her to order the dresses and she did. When I came to try my dress on I immediately noticed an awful smell when entering the fitting room. It smelled like fish, bad! When putting the dress over my head it was clear the smell was coming from the dress. I was too excited to see the dress I didn't mention it. Then the dress didn't fit - it was too small. Mahin didn't seem to think anything of it and said when they had it altered they would move the modesty panel and it would be fine. While standing in what seemed to be a room with the temperature set to 120 degrees having her pin my hem she was again quite rude. She actually got quite loud with me when she insisted that I had moved and she would have to redo part of the pinning. My mother had to stand with me holding my arms so I didn't pass out due to the temperature so if I moved, I didn't mean to. $500+ later after alterations to hem it a few inches and put in the bustle I came back to try the dress on again. The fishy stench remained, the bustle clips were horrible, the hem was still too long, and it STILL DIDN'T FIT! Again, she didn't think anything of it and said that if I wear a girdle that should take care of it. I finally mentioned the smell, after everyone I had there with me said "yes, it's awful" and she didn't notice it. She said "maybe after we steam it it'll be better." The girls dresses came in and we decided NOT to use her alteration services so we just picked them up and left. The dresses were as expected and were all a little big, but that's better than small. I decided to pick my dress up several weeks before the wedding to see if we could do something about the smell. I "googled" it and apparently dresses that are shipped from over seas are sprayed with pesticides so that could have been the reason. We left it hang out and it got better, but never totally went away. I took my dress with to a different seamstress when the girls had their alterations done to ask for a different modesty panel to help my dress fit better and the wonderful woman explained that my dress was not anywhere near the right size. So, another $300+ later she put in panels on the side of the dress to get it to fit the best it could. This was all AFTER I had lost 15 lbs since I had been fitted in the first place. In the end, my $600 dress budget ended up costing me over $2000 and I smelled like fish on my wedding day.

The store is really pretty, and we were warmly greeted when we checked in. Their dressing rooms are nice sized and feel really private. Lydia was our consultant and she couldn't have been better! She started by asking me to describe what I liked, and she was able to put that into bridal terms. She was patient with my family picking our different options and she brought me some fantastic picks (including the dress I ended up falling for!). She brought me dresses under my budget too, which I really appreciated. She wasn't pushy at all. Vera herself even came in to say hi and brought me an option! Lydia was sweet, fun to work with, and asked me the right questions when I was torn between two options. I didn't feel rushed and was able to take my time going back and forth between two dresses. Overall, I had a great experience at Vera's and would highly recommend it!

Vera's is such an iconic spot that I had fairly high expectations but looking back felt neutral about my visit there. The store itself was clean and appeared to have numerous dresses in stock and were a variety of styles. After checking in we were taken back to a ready room where my bridal party was able to comfortably fit. My consult was polite but I'm not sure she understood my style. It felt like each dress I tried on was a hard sales pitch as to why that dress was "the one" rather than allowing my feedback to guide the dress selections. Then when it came time to ordering the size of the dress, I was shocked to see how poorly measured I was and that the staff member did not answer my questions when I had hesitations about the size she had chosen. I left feeling meh and anxious about my dress and feeling more like I had been pressured into the purchase than I cared to feel. Which is not a fun feeling after spending a large amount of money. After purchasing the dress, the list of tailor recommendations were horrible and thankfully I found someone not on the list. Overall I'm not sure I would go back there again for my dress.
