Why 5 stars? Because Louis was the like water in the unemployment desert. --- --- --- I recently learned a little known fact that unemployment is not an enjoyable experience. I know most people think it's great, but actually I'm here to tell you: No! If my unemployment were a baseball card, here's the stats you'd find on the back: 7.5 Months 1,070 Applications 94 Interviews 49 Companies If that's not an All-Star performance, I don't know what is. Somewhere in the neighborhood for Rejection #819 or so, I started to wonder if I was doing something insanely wrong. I've hired a lot of people in my career, so I thought I knew the right things to do and say on the other end of the process, but I was getting rejected in every way imaginable. Enter: Louis from Have Better Conversations. It turns out the two of us worked at Yelp at the same time, but didn't know each other. Fortunately, we had a mutual connection and he suggested I meet with Louis. I initially wasn't super enthusiastic about adding more Zoom calls to my schedule, but I figured that it couldn't hurt to get a new perspective. If nothing else, Louis severed as an excellent confidence reinforcer. Despite how aware I was that many of these remote jobs were receiving over 1,000 applications, it's hard to avoid self-doubt creeping in when you are getting rejected at such a high velocity. Louis reminded me of what I needed to be reminded of: I had a pretty impressive resume and was a good conversationalist. Going into these conversations with that reinforcement helped my confidence tremendously. "Have Better Conversations" they say. "But, I already talk constantly and spend my entire life having great conversations!!" You say back. Wrong. You can always be having better conversations, and especially where you least expect it. I had my private first session with Louis today after having attended a group event he hosted on interview training (which I highly recommend you reach out to him for if you have one coming up). For the private session, I wasn't sure what I even wanted help with - when you're a talker with ten years of sales experience like me, it's easy to recognize that while obviously no one is perfect at conversations, it can be difficult to diagnose exactly what you can tailor or improve. This takes me to describe Louis' myriad of offerings when it comes to conversation coaching: it doesn't even need to be "diagnosing something you're doing wrong," it can simply be taking a specific conversation you have in mind and helping you attack it strategically.
