One of our friends is not much of a swimmer and had a very hard time "relaxing" his body to float... after many "Friend I need you to relax" she realized like a true pro that it was not happening, Madi swam him over to the kiddie board and he had the most unforgettable time of this life. We did a whale watching tour on Thursday and then a sunset manta ray snorkeling tour on Saturday! Both excursions were fantastic! Trevor, Diego, and Tamae were great for our whale watching tour. We saw a mama and baby humpback, and then saw some manta rays on our way back to the harbor. And then Lena, Tamae, and our other 2 guys (I'm so sorry i forgot) were awesome when it came to the manta rays! We saw a few different manta rays and they made sure to move us around as the rays also moved. 10/10 recommend them for all the tours! read more

I booked a night snorkel to see the manta rays with a mom & had such a great experience with this crew/tour. I first off got lost finding the place & Diego was so nice, reached out via phone and sent us his pin location. He even stayed on the phone with me until I arrived & flagged us down. How nice right?!?! My mom was super anxious about this experience at first but Tamae was so kind and helped her to the float from the boat & back. She wouldn't stop talking about how much fun she had. The captain Mitchell played some amazing tunes. They served some hot chocolate after our tour too along with some snacks. WOW! What a once in a lifetime experience swimming with Manta rays! The beautiful creatures (we saw 4 on the 9 pm tour) were flying so gracefully! That was amazing but this company put the trip over the top! Patrick, Trevor and Tamae were AMAZING! Helpful fitting wetsuits and mask/snorkel, even when the kids had some trouble with the fit Tamae was so gentle and helpful! The boat ride out was quick and fun to the water on other side of the airport where a few boats were moored. They jumped in the water and set up a giant square light to attract plankton (which the mantra rays coke to eat). We held onto a rope around the square or sat on top to see the Mantas. While we were out there they guided us on who each manta ray was, why they are such special creatures and how they connect with them. It was a bit nauseating laying out flat on the top of the water with a pool noodle under your ankles and your head in the water but when I was just about done they announced 5 more minutes and it was just perfect timing! On the way back they offered hot chocolate, sodas and snacks like chips and Rice Krispie treats. Back on land they airdropped videos for donations and they were worth it! First time going to see dolphins and turtles on a boat cruise. I was a little scared at first because I don't know how to swim but the boat was equiped with emergency life jackets in case anything happened. So I felt more at ease. There were three crew members: Amy, Mitch and Tamae. They were very friendly and perfect hosts. They delivered what they advertised. They also offered two snorkeling opportunities and a free lunch consisting of hot dogs, chips, soda and an oatmeal snack. The family that I came with enjoyed the cruise very much. The boat is equipped with a rest room but it was out of order the day we went. They should have had a temporary portapotty or something until repairs have been made. They offered a snall bucket. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this cruise for something to do with the family while in Kona. read more

Are ready to try an adventure that is unique? Water activities are great but what about doing something at night, in the water and mysteriously fun? You must do this! A night time viewing of majestic Manta Rey fish! Oh boy, so fun. When I booked my trip to the Big Island I wanted to do as many fun things I could find. I booked a snorkel trip, a horseback riding tour, a Zip Line tour and when I saw this Manta Tour I was intrigued. Never done it. Well, booked it through Hawaii Activities and when I arrived on the Big Island I was anxious. The day came, I drove down to the facility early (good thing I did, I got lost) and introduced myself to the host. Maybe her name was Iruka, but a very friendly girl greeted me and accommodated any questions I had. She offered a wetsuit fins and mask/snorkel combo however, I bought and brought my own (because I know what it means for things not to fit right). We took off on time with about 13-15 people out into the abyss. Light was shimmering off the water as the sun was setting down. Very beautiful to see it on a boat. We took a short ride to the spot where other boats were anchored and the crew pulled out a square like raft. It had special lights in the middle to draw fish and Manta Ray. The special lights draw the plankton towards the light and the fish eat it right away. Everyone slowly dropped ourselves over the side and crew members helped us swim to the floating raft. We had to hold a small rope handle and given floating noodles to place under our feet to make everyone horizontal. This is to keep our feet from kicking underneath the raft and scaring the fish. This also kept everyone relaxed, well until we started seeing strange fish. I didn't know what Manta Ray looked like but at first I was scared to see this weird object coming beneath me. I then recognized the thing to be a huge Manta Ray. The come up looping to scoop up the plankton and repeat. The closer they got to the light the more they scoop. There were small and large Manta Ray's and everyone was so excited. Never heard so many screaming into their snorkels with excitement! Lots of people had underwater cameras like go pro. I brought my Insta360 and video'd my experience. Unfortunately, I can't find a way to upload it here. I'll post a link to my YouTube for my samples. After about 45min I was already getting weary from holding the rope and my camera stick in my hand. Although I had my own wetsuit top on, I was getting to feel a little cold. Fortunately, I was able to sit on top of the raft and watch everyone enjoy the fish below. Gave me an idea to stick my camera pole into the water and continue filming while I sat on the raft. So much fun! The ride back was scary fun. Traveling through the dark without any lights but the moon illuminating on the water in front of us Wow! This is something you'll never forget. Aloha! Where do I even begin to express our feelings! This our first time in Hawaii and we decided to celebrate our 10 year anniversary together on this beautiful Big Island. I've read dozens of times and heard from many people that if you go to the big island you must do a night manta ray snorkel tour. I'm here to say they know what they're talking about. You MUST do this. It is a once in a lifetime experience and I highly recommend the Iruka Hawaii Dolphin experience. We were a little apprehensive but we heard that this group was really good making people feel comfortable. We are both in our mid 60's. There were quite a few on the trip that were not strong swimmers and wore life vests. My wife was a little apprehensive too even though she can swim. Tamae was with her every step of the way, waiting for her as she jumped in the water and guiding her to the board to hang on. I saw her and the rest of the crew (Madi, Amy and Toby) helping and reassuring those that were not comfortable. In the end I think that everyone had an amazing experience. A huge manta, named Gabby, came within inches of the whole group. It was like being buzzed by an underwater B-2 bomber. This tour was amazing!! We saw tons of manta rays, they say they usually only see 2-4 but we saw like 20! It was crazy, we even had a special guest star of a reef shark and some dolphins. We did the later tour, the 7:30 and it was totally worth it. So many manta rays. Did the night manata ray tour tonight and holy moly this blew my mind. They speed you out there (which was fun) they they have lighted boards that you just hold onto and float with. Plankton are attracted to the light and the mantas eat then, so these huge gorgeous animals are swimming at you within touching distance and doing flips as they catch their food. We went on the night tour to see the Manta-rays and it was great. The crew were friendly, helpful, and energetic. We learned a lot about the mantas and got to see so many or at least the ones we saw kept coming back to the light! One picture had four of them! The only down side was the rough water and I guess that's pretty usual there, it did make you tired after a while holding on to the raft and being tossed around by the waves. We booked the moonlight Manta tour through Viatour. The boat is new, understated and well maintained. The staff is professional which stood out next to a childish carnival barker captain unloading at the next dock as we loaded up. They motor to the spot at high speed but you feel completely safe at all times. The crew provided assorted beverage cans including Spindrift, chips and good hot cocoa at the end. The staff told marine themed dad jokes and played good music to keep it light. We saw basically nonstop Mantas inches from our faces. There are not enough words to say how fantastic these guys are. I have a really bad leg that doesn't always cooperate and move correctly. When I got in the water I unfortunately had a niiiiiice panic attack. And my leg wouldn't work. Oh; and did I mention the sea sickness? Yeah. BUT these guys.... MAN I'm tellin ya! They got me to a safe place- I was able to watch these MAGNIFICENT and amazing mantas ROLL about an inch from my face. The span on these guys was 6-8' across!!!!! Absolutely the most amazing experience I've had in my life. I'm 52 and not a spring chicken. When time was up (boooooo)! I still couldn't move my stuuuuupid leg- so they brought me back to the boat (I was on a floatie raft at this point and safe) and helped get me up the ladder. The sickness still hit and the crew helped me with ginger ale and..... ahem.... a warm "bath" when we got back to the dock. "Hawaii, where the air is so dewy sweet, the stamps lick themselves." -Newman, Seinfeld We did both the Dolphin & Manta tours, both were fantastic and different experiences. Captain Brian, Kogi & Aaron were all great, special shout out to Aly for taking care of my 11 yr.old Kai during the Dolphin swim. Stick close to Aly, she'll lead you right to the dolphins - plus watching her free dive w/ the animals is so beautiful, she's really connected to the environment. Da Scene: When you arrive at the dock hit the restrooms, you'll be out there 3 hours so best to make the pitstop. You'll get a breakdown of the coming events and outfitted w/ gear, they supply everything (even pool noodles if you are not a strong swimmer), but you can bring your own if you want. Dolphins: I brought my body board fins which are great over short distances, but I should've used their diving fins, much easier to glide underwater. Mantas: you'll get a wet suit, so wear light/tight bathing suit (huge baggy board shorts or frilly swim suits will just get in the way). It's around a 30 minute ride on the "ridgid inflatable" boat, which has covered bench seating for 14-16 folks. BONUS: Ride the edge of the boat, straddling the inflatable part - it can be a wild ride. Daytime you might see some spinners along the way, night time was very cool, the plankton kickup in the wake of the boat and light up like green firefly, you get a rollercoaster and light show at the same time. Da Dolphin Event: In captain Brian's hands, you'll arrive at a semi-protected cove that the resting dolphins like to hang out. You'll slip in to the water and your guide will lead you to where they are crusin' around - sometimes they go in circles so you just surface snorkel until they come back around. This ain't the Hilton, you don't touch or feed the dolphins, you get to swim with them in their natural environment and observe. Pretty cool. We got within 4-5 feet several times, and the dolphins didn't seem to mid us at all, twisting & turning, sometimes going vertical and popping out of the water we were there a good hour or so. Captain Brian must have minions all over, cause he got a call about a daytime manta sighting, so off we went and we hung out w/ that manta for a good 30 minutes before he took off into the deep. We still had time and were going to another spot for some SUP & more reef snorkeling, but the rest of the party (6 guests from Japan and even 3 from my crew) were DONE by then... As the lone wolf, I didn't want to extend it alone, there was one bucket hugger and I felt bad for her. Aly sliced us up some fresh pineapple (big knife!) and we cruised back to the dock. Da Manta Event: Upon arriving at the Manta spot, the crew will float a couple of led lit boards out on the water and wait for the plankton to come. You slide into the water and swim about 10 yards to the float boards and simply hold on (loosely) and wait for the Manta to come feed on the plankton. if you have trouble keeping your legs floating, they will slip a little noodle under your ankles. Lots of fish come too and they also love the plankton - I actually saw an eel in the flurry - Aaron said to look out for octopus, sometimes they swim into the mix as well. When the Manta came it snuck up on me from behind, I was just watching all the fish when something grazed my stomach and rolled right in front of me downwards, with his tail skimming my legs as he went by... whoa, total rush! Then it was pretty much a silent visual ballet, sometimes 1-2, a couple of times 6-10 just doing belly rolls in front of you feeding... they rarely bumped into each other, when they did, it was funny as they shrugged each other off. There was one who was missing a horn and I guess had a tougher time judging distance cause he was on me like a stripper most of the night! BTW, same rules too: they can touch YOU, but do NOT touch them. Highlight was went he misjudged the light board and bumped it a little, the folks on the other side of the board squealed with delight as they got that final ovation before heading back to the boat. You're out there a good hour or so. BONUS, the Mantas surfaced while we were stripping off our wetsuits, a bunch of them were crusing near the surface as if to say "mahalos for coming out!" waved their fins a little whle before continuing their feeding ballet under the surface. Just a super special time. A little hot cocoa hit the spot (two cups for me thank you) then ride back - very cool... stars in the sky, green plankton "fire flies" in our wake, and the island lights on shore. Unnnnn-forrrrrrr-gettable, really. Note to Mgmt: Add Go Pro camera rentals, you'll clean up! We had our little under water camera, but I would've gladly rented one for even better pictures/video. My husband and I did the manta and dolphin experience. They are not very organized. They called us Monday night to advise their boat had broken down but our manta was for Tuesday. For the manta experience, it was ok. After seeing the other companies on the water, a lot of other companies had better light boards to attract the mantas. The light on our board went out right when the mantas were coming back which led them to swim away. For the dolphin dive, they bring you to where the dolphins are. They did try to see if dolphins would be elsewhere but then ended up saying they couldn't spend that much time searching. The dolphins happened to be outside of the harbor where the sharks are known to hang out as well. It's an ocean so sharks can be anywhere but for those who may not want to swim this area, you may want to choose another company because they'll act like they aren't aware. There were multiple tiger sharks there. There may be people who don't care and are ok with swimming with sharks, if that's you then they are the company for you. Also, the family we were with, the mother got sick and they didn't seem to care at all. Their bathroom was not functional on the boat and they didn't have anything on the boat to assist. The mother was hunched over in the inside of the boat while the female captain swam in the water and told me "they would figure it out". They are not customer service oriented. Please choose another company if you would like great service. They aren't a bad company but they leave a lot of room for improvement. read more

Tori was amazing. I ended up on a 7 person boat so she was a great hostess to all of us. She was telling us everything she knew about the Mantas and was able to answer any questions we threw he way. We ended up getting out there really late, probably about 9:30pm because of my complaints below, but that is what made our experience so nice. When we arrived there were about 4 other boats out there and about 10 minutes in they were all gone. We had all the mantas to ourselves and they all came to see us. They came so close that they actually touched us. Unbelievable experience! Starting out, I thought this was going to be a disaster. They called us early in the day to tell us the boat had broken down and changed our time and boat. It said to arrive no later that 7:45 and no one even showed up from the company until 8:00. Then we waited another 45 minutes for a boat because they didn't know which to take. I was getting very frustrated, but it was all worth it in the end! read more

This was by far my favorite tour!! My husband and I did the night time Manta Ray snorkel the first night we were on the Big Island. We were staying in Hilo but made the drive to Kona. I had a fabulous time and would definitely do it again. At the time we did it the wet suits were a part of the booking, which we did through the ITT office. We made our way to the harbor and grabbed a bite to eat then just hung out and waited until people arrived. We were fitted for the wetsuits and kept some valuables in the trunk that we didn't want to take on the boat. We departed the harbor in time to watch the sunset while heading out. I appreciated that because sunsets on the Hawaiian islands are amazing and to see it from a boat was even better!! We arrived in the spot that we were doing the snorkel out of and we were given some instructions. Allie, who is AMAZING, got everything together. They put some LED lights on surf boards and send them out to float near the boat. While we were waiting a HUGE Manta was just swimming near the board! I got a picture of it from above then jumped in. It was just a few yards to swim to the board and it had handles to hang onto. My husband had his go pro and we just patiently floated and waited for the Manta to come. They are attracted to the bacteria that is attracted to the LED light. We only waited a little bit before this HUGE manta came up swimming by everyone. It was the most amazing sight!! I was giggling inside my mask the whole time. They are just gentle giants swimming by you. I'm not sure how long we were in the water for but once they called us back, we all got in the boat and dried off then we were on our way back to the harbor. This time it was pitch black and we were flying through the water!! Being prior Navy and driving speed boats like this, it was so thrilling for me! On the way out to see the manta ray we came across a pod of spinner dolphins which was the highlight of the trip. They were jumping and playing around the boat, the family loved it. Riding the boat, sitting on the edge was a blast to the manta ray sight as well. Hanging onto the decaying surf board that held the lights that didn't work half the time was definitely a down fall. This is the reason why the manta rays never came over to our side of the board, the light didn't work. While were out there hanging onto the board, other companies are out there to with their nice boards, BRIGHT lights and so that just never gave us a chance. After about 30 minutes in the water they said it was time to go while every other company was still out in the water enjoying the Manta Rays. Just seems like we were in a hurry and being rushed to the harbor. I heard "Hang loose" is the company to go with if you want to see the Manta Rays. I say any other company will probably be better than this one. The point of the lights is for the manta ray to see the plankton...no lights equals no manta ray. So we paid $360.00 for a boat ride to see dolphins. With that being pretty cool, we live on Oahu and can do that way cheaper and have but to see the Rays is something you can only do on the big island. read more

Great experience with Iruka Hawaii and the manta ray experience. There are a lot of companies to choose from but this company keeps it real, genuine and brings the aloha spirit with them. The crew was really nice, so this review is not about the crew. This is about the whole experience including my children who are good swimmers and were really excited. To be honest I would not recommend this at all. Too expensive for the 5 minutes experience you will get. If you really want to see the manta rays, choose another company. The boat spent very little time in the water and we had our face in the water for a long time without any action. When they approached the other boats, that apparently were in the water longer before and after us, we finally got to see one Manta Ray for 5 minutes because the other boats had bigger lights, the crew from the other boats, were in the water pointing lights to it. I am happy that I got to see one but the price I paid for 5 was $390. I paid for my 3 kids thinking this was gonna be amazing based on the cost but I was really disappointed. I wish I didn't. I rather do whale watching in Maui for $39 per adult and kids are free. I would not return to this experience ever again. read more
