It's the BEST SNORKELING in all Hawaii's islands. It has a diversity of thousands of colorful fish and coral. It's the inspiration for the movie finding Nemo. After 1-2 hours of snorkeling, we boarded the boat to try the water slide and second floor diving board. It was super fun. The crew provided sandwiches, chips, fruit and soda/water. On the way back we hugged the coastline for great pictures. We stopped and watched a pod of dolphins who came to the boat. It was a magical tour for any snorkeling lover. The crew and boat were outstanding. We loved it.

Since it's a smaller boat u can go faster and get maybe closer to the action. The drawbacks compared to a more traditional "ferry" type wld be ferry has bathrooms and comfy seats and shade. This one we did had saddle seats which were ok but comparable to a padded bike seat. Not so comfy for males especially perhaps. If u go, u can bring your own waterbottle, make sure to wear copious amounts of sunscreen and bring more to reapply. I (female) was happy I wore a long sleeved rash guard and long light colored leggings. Can wear any shoe that cld get wet, tho we did not get wet. Could wear sneakers if ur ok if they get somewhat messy. Wish I wore water shoes for the grip and the sun protection bc my feet got so much sun exposure in flip flops and not much grip. We left most of our stuff in the hotel room safe and just brought keys and drivers license. Wish I had brought cash for a tip for the driver and tour guide. Can bring phone for photos. If u are the first to arrive to the dock, you may be able to snag the seats right in front of the driver, which would be the way to get any sort of shade. Wear a hat, preferably with a chin strap or affix a baseball hat to your ponytail (ladies) or flip cap backwards as a guy when the boat goes fast so not lose hat. Wish I had had some more neck protection. Drink water. Reapply sunscreen. You'll be fast then will stop to look around so there's time to stand up, reapply etc. Great and informative narration by Dennis. Captain driver was also great. Wld recommend but again consider your needs for shade, seating, and can't go to the bathroom for three hours. Nice bathrooms at the harbor tho, flushable booklets, water and soap. Hope this helps!

Captain Andrew and Olivia were excellent guides, they had great energy and humor while sharing information about the wildlife. Their boat, the Artemis, is the "Rolls Royce" of whale-watching boats that I've been on; clearly designed for optimal wildlife viewing and passenger comfort. We saw multiple humpback whales, three species of dolphin, and many manta rays during our trips with them. The crew is clearly very knowledgeable about the local wildlife and did a fabulous job finding animals, as well as positioning the boat for viewing them. On the manta ray night snorkel... DO IT! It exceeded my expectations tenfold and I would reckon it's one of the most unique ocean experiences anyone could have. You get to float effortlessly (with a board and pool noodle) while watching these majestic animals feed all around you! The boat is a great platform for this too, as there is a hot water rinse available to you when you get out of the water. I will book trips with this company EVERY TIME I visit Kona in the future! Both experiences were completely awesome and I can't wait to be back.

Both Ashely and Alec have researched whales in Alaska and Hawaii, so hearing specific researcher knowledge was really cool. Ashley was also just so enthusiastic. She really made us understand how special it was to be out there witnessing these animals. The water was a little rocky at times, but we still saw so many whales, including one that got within 30 yards of our boat. The best part was actually on the way back. We were already at time for the tour, but Ashley noticed a group of boats congregating and went to investigate. It ended up being a whale shark that came right up by the boat, which the guides told us is an incredibly rare event. It was just an awesome thing to see. You can really tell they have so much reverence and respect for the whales. If you have any interest in seeing these animals up close and hearing from specialists who work with them full time, this is the company to go with. We have so much respect for the work Ashley and Alec do.

Do be warned that the waters are a bit choppy and the boat goes fast so expect high winds. I was a little hesitant about snorkeling as I'm not the strongest swimmer but felt well supported throughout and we saw some amazing views. The mantas got so close to us! It was a surreal experience and I love that the crew took go pro footage from below and later shared the videos and pictures with us right as we got back to shore complimentary. Thankfully, they had space for our entire group for the sunset time (615pm check-in) and we didn't have to wait for the late-late slots. Online booking was easy-peasy (no kama'aina discount, unfortunately). We checked in (parking is street parking and there are several boats leaving from the same area, so it can be a bit of a challenge) pretty easily - there were folks out front directing us where to go for Sea Quest. I decided the $35 for the GoPro rental was a steal compared to trusting my waterproof phone pouch and I have no regrets - you can leave the camera running the whole time and they give you the SD card at the end. It was no trouble to do that once we got there, as I didn't add that when booking. They have a decent gift shop and the keiki in our party bought themselves some stuffed souvenirs. We got fitted for shorty wet suits and prescription masks if needed, and then waited for them to split us into boats and groups. We were accompanied in the water by Wylen (sorry if I butchered the spelling) and Abram, and they had the perfect blend of aloha, humor, and information. Super chill, but you also knew they meant business about Rule Number 1. From there, we boarded the boat, a small zodiac-style craft, for the 5 minute journey to Manta Village. The website made it seem like we could leave things on board, but that really wasn't the case. We left all bags, clothing, towels in a secure room on shore, slippers got collected on the pier, and small things like eyeglasses were stored in a bin on the boat. No trouble, but I wouldn't plan to take anything with you on the boat. Getting into the water was easy, and we had one keiki who was a little apprehensive about everything - they took great care to lower him into the water, and when he wanted to go back to the boat a little early, they accompanied him back to the ladder no problem. There were plenty staff around to help and also identify the mantas by their markings. And there were SO MANY mantas! We had an amazing evening watching them - I lost count and forgot many names, there were so many swimming past. We had 30-40 minutes in the water and we had multiple mantas around us the whole time. I thought the time was plenty - by the time we had about 5 minutes to go, my stomach was ready to be back on land. My only regret is not stretching my triceps beforehand - I was not expecting my arms to be so sore after holding onto the bar around the light board! We paid $135ish plus fees per person (all ages) and it was the highlight of the trip, for sure.

While we didn't partake in the breakfast fruit or mini muffins on board, the pre-departure coffee was welcome and yummy. On the return, we greatly appreciated and enjoyed our boxed lunches (the salad was particularly great!). We had the option for complimentary light drinks or to purchase cocktails but just drank our water. Then we did the really late night manta snorkel, which was intense but truly awesome -- the mantas came within inches of our faces repeatedly, and we were often surrounded by a school of decently sized fish. Because everyone in the group is lined up along the same lighted board, you're very close to your neighbors, but the sea life is so majestic that you barely notice anything above the water. Cocktails available for purchase on the way there, and complimentary hot cocoa on the way back. We had the same competent and professional, yet friendly, crew for both outings. They prioritized both safety and comfort. We had plenty of time in the water. Boat was clean and well-stocked (including the bathroom and when my daughter needed a band-aid). They played fun music. Masks fit us well and didn't fog up. Other provided gear included noodles to make floating easier, reef safe sunscreen for the day snorkel, and wetsuit tops for the night snorkel. We enjoyed our trip tremendously and Cpt. Craig was very informative about local history if inclined to ask. All equipment and bait was provided, and included in the overall cost. Although there are no guarantees you would catch fish, when fishing, we were fortunate enough to do so. We each landed a yellow fin tuna. We had never used the gear necessary to hook up and land these delectable fish, but Cpt. Craig was patient and informative on how to do so. At the tail end of our trip he filleted our catch and bagged it up for us. We were provided beverages and snacks, if interested. There was great communication before and up to our charter. I/we highly recommend this charter! Should we ever return to the Big Island we will do this charter again, no doubt. I may, if the others were inclined, charter it for the whole day. Thank you, Cpt. Craig, for an outstanding adventure. For me, personally, it was the funnest part of our week stay on the island. Here are a couple of tips. (1) Keep in mind - there is not a restroom on this boat. So, you should plan to flush the pipes before launching unless you want to waste valuable time returning to the launch ramp. (2) You can get some of your catch through the TSA and Ag checkpoints at the airport if desired. We froze some of our fillets and had them in zip bags, placed within our carry-on luggage.

We laughed when my husband and I caught tuna but by the time we reeled them in the dolphins surrounding us got to the fish before we did. We relocated and ended our day each catching Wahoo. I was able to catch some sun lounging in front of his boat. We made a friend and the next time we visit we will definitely be on Craig's boat again. Highly recommend. That's right, there are two ways to reach this beautiful white sand beach and gem by hiking, and the path I took was via the Kekaha Kai State Park's main parking lot, and first that is a rough 20-minute drive with 4x4 vehicles like Jeeps from Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway to that trailhead. Then it's about another 30-minute hike in each direction and you go on lots of loose lava rocks and it can get hot, so make sure you have sunscreen, a good bucket hat, and plenty of water. I don't know about the second way in, so I could not speak to that method. But in any case, it is so worth the time and effort when it was all said and done. There were a few crowds when getting to Makalawena Beach but not super busy at all. You'll find other tide pools, palm trees, and other native plants. Waves are rather rough at times, but it is still swimmable for the most part.

I had the most incredible snorkelling/whale watching experience with Sunlight on Water! We had a very rare experience of being able to see a tiger shark, up close and person, while maintaining a very safe distance. We also had a pod of dolphins who were seemingly babysitting a young humpback whale come and interact with us In an unreal way! The baby whale came and swam underneath our boat, belly up and then turned around and swam underneath it again! It was one of the most magical experiences of my life! The entire crew of Sunlight on the water really make the adventure though. They are so kind and caring and knowledgeable about what they do. You can really tell how much they care and how much excitement they have for what they do. There is so much love and passion that goes into these trips and you would be remiss if you came to The Big Island of Hawai'i and didn't book your snorkel experience with them. I couldn't recommend them more, you have to check them out, you will not be disappointed! read more

We did both the dolphin swim and the night time Manta swim.. Both trips where amazing.. Boat was clean and stocked with snacks/ drinks and they gave us lunch on the dolphin swim. Staff went out of there way to be informative and safety was first on there mind the entire time. The Skipper was intelligent and friendly. Waters are clear, fish are plentiful, dolphins are fast and the Manta Rays are Huge. The bonus to the entire two trips is all about timing.. there are so many other charters that come out it looks like a shopping mall in the ocean and everything is 75% off. We left both times beating the crowds. It was nice to see everything before the crowds cheapened the feelings you get. Way to go Sunlight! We will be back to use your tours again! read more

I am not one to write a review but these two humans are well worth boasting about. I cannot express my gratitude enough for the patience and kindness Alyssa and Taylor showed me. I did the Ocean Safari and it was undoubtedly the scariest and coolest thing I have ever done. We found a pod of Pilot whales that had 5 oceanic white tips accompanying them. It took a lot longer than I would like to admit for me to get in the water but the genuine support, kindness and patience these two showed me had me feeling completely at ease when they did finally get me in. Our crew on board Sunlight on Water was the best. They were helpful, fun & knowledgable. We went out on a night with a huge number of mantas and Lauren let us stay out to be the last group in, which we were extremely grateful for! Yet she asked several times if anyone wanted or needed to go back to the boat. In other words she was sensitive to the desires of our group. Lauren helped us understand how we needed to act while with the mantas. She was respectful of our group, the mantas & even other groups. The crew was fantastic. They made sure we were all comfortable and safe. They went into the middle of a fray of boats but it seemed as we were alone with the mantas. Their platform to hang onto was easy and the mantas are within inches of you as they do their ballet. Amazing creatures. We didn't want to leave, but coming aboard to a warm water washoff and hot chocolate made leaving the mantas more palateable. You won't go wrong with this tour group. read more

We did the Manta Ray night snorkeling tour with them and it was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Experience of a lifetime, for sure, and I'm an avid snorkeler, longtime ocean girl and scuba diver. The crew were great, stopped off at the fish farm and got to see both dolphins (including a baby!) and a monk seal while waiting for sunset. They were helpful, friendly and knowledgeable. Went near the new moon, on a slightly overcast night, so the plankton gathered around the lighted boards and we saw Manta Rays the entire time we were in the water. Tonight's manta ray show was extraordinary. We were with a small group of people and were the first boat to the location. We had lots of personal attention from the captain and the crew and in addition to the manta ray dive, they took us by some local points of interest. We had the best time. My sister lives in Hilo and has been several times. The crew, Captain Shawn and Bradley were amazing help with anything that was asked. When we got to the site for the mantas, it was rough waters and a slow start but then the mantas came and put in a great show. There was a warm shower and hot chocolate for us for the ride back. Best day on the ocean - EVER. The crew was amazing. Swam with the Dolphins, did some whale watching & laughed our heads off. Great fun!

It's awesome! Definitely a must do on the big island. There are other boats that go out but Sunlight has one of the biggest.

Captain Natalie and Assistant Anna were fantastic, knowledgeable, funny, and very attentive throughout the trip. Captain Natalie shared interesting stories about Captain Cook and the surrounding lava caves, and she even helped me with my snorkeling gear and inflating the vest. The snorkeling spot near Captain Cook Monument was incredible, and we saw so many fish. They also provided fresh fruit, chips, cookies, and soft drinks. Thanks to Captain Natalie and Anna, all six of us had a great time and would highly recommend this company.

Thankfully, they had space for our entire group for the sunset time (615pm check-in) and we didn't have to wait for the late-late slots. Online booking was easy-peasy (no kama'aina discount, unfortunately). We checked in (parking is street parking and there are several boats leaving from the same area, so it can be a bit of a challenge) pretty easily - there were folks out front directing us where to go for Sea Quest. I decided the $35 for the GoPro rental was a steal compared to trusting my waterproof phone pouch and I have no regrets - you can leave the camera running the whole time and they give you the SD card at the end. It was no trouble to do that once we got there, as I didn't add that when booking. They have a decent gift shop and the keiki in our party bought themselves some stuffed souvenirs. We got fitted for shorty wet suits and prescription masks if needed, and then waited for them to split us into boats and groups. We were accompanied in the water by Wylen (sorry if I butchered the spelling) and Abram, and they had the perfect blend of aloha, humor, and information. Super chill, but you also knew they meant business about Rule Number 1. From there, we boarded the boat, a small zodiac-style craft, for the 5 minute journey to Manta Village. The website made it seem like we could leave things on board, but that really wasn't the case. We left all bags, clothing, towels in a secure room on shore, slippers got collected on the pier, and small things like eyeglasses were stored in a bin on the boat. No trouble, but I wouldn't plan to take anything with you on the boat. Getting into the water was easy, and we had one keiki who was a little apprehensive about everything - they took great care to lower him into the water, and when he wanted to go back to the boat a little early, they accompanied him back to the ladder no problem. There were plenty staff around to help and also identify the mantas by their markings. And there were SO MANY mantas! We had an amazing evening watching them - I lost count and forgot many names, there were so many swimming past. We had 30-40 minutes in the water and we had multiple mantas around us the whole time. I thought the time was plenty - by the time we had about 5 minutes to go, my stomach was ready to be back on land. My only regret is not stretching my triceps beforehand - I was not expecting my arms to be so sore after holding onto the bar around the light board! We paid $135ish plus fees per person (all ages) and it was the highlight of the trip, for sure.

I usually suffer from sea sickness but I never feel ill on the Fair Winds boats. The staff is always so nice and friendly, which makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. We do miss the BBQ burgers they used to cook for lunch on the boat, but the vegetarian menu they offer now is still pretty good. We also really appreciate their efforts to be environmentally friendly, which makes us feel even better about supporting them. Overall, it is always a memorable and enjoyable trip, and we look forward to it every year!

We got into the anchorage and tied up to a buoy with 1 other boat there. A couple more came by the time we were finishing up, but it was a really nice, relaxing, uncramped trip with dolphins along with us both out and back.

Guides said morning trip got skunked. Wasn't more than 10 min. Into our trip we saw our first whale, playfully showing its tail as we watched, along with a calf. Then another spouting. Then another showing its tail and a calf, too. Then spinner dolphins putting on a show right below out catamaran. And a manta ray on our way back to shore. Whatever the captain was doing, they skillfully did their job, spotting the whales, kept us informed, the guests nicely lubed with beverages ( we don't drink, though, so water was icy cold ), just a relaxed yet successful boat trip successfully searching for whales. Thanks Hawai'i Nautical for reducing my bucket list, your on my Recommended list for the Big Island!

We all wanted to go together, so when we told them we would all cancel...they talked to another group to let them know that if they cancelled theirs, they could go on another night for free. Because it wasn't handled with discretion, it made the situation very uncomfortable with the other family. To top it all off...we saw no manta rays...but we also know that this isn't their fault. Disappointed to say the least.

The boat is so much fun, cruising everywhere at 30mph and even just for kicks we traveled at over 40mph at times. Not only is this speed fun but it's effective. Within the first hour of our trip we already found a pod of pilot whales to swim with. They had not been sighted much in preceding weeks so it was a big deal. Several successful drops with them and Capt. Brett was ready to take us to the next opportunity. Which by the way was more than 10 miles out at "F" buoy where we had an in water encounter with rough toothed dolphins and an oceanic white tip shark. Our in-water guide, Ron, was fantastic and carried so much energy and enthusiasm. We felt very safe next to him as he guided us around the shark and dolphins in 10,000 feet of water. After we left the buoy, Brett found more pilot whales for us. It was another fantastic drop and skillful spotting. Obviously the trip was already going great but Capt. decided to try and finish things off by seeing if any hammerheads were schooling. We did manage to find one and we stuck it out for 30 minutes to see if a school appeared, but it was too early in the day. Nevertheless, we appreciated the effort! On the way in Capt. Brett showed us the capability of this US Navy Seal RIB with its highly maneuverable turns and handling. It made me want to get a boat like this for myself! If you value your time, Wild Hawaii Ocean Adventures is the FASTEST and one of the most CAPABLE operators on the Big Island. Bang for the buck it can't be beat. And Capt. Brett along with water guide Ron were top notch and professional hosts.
