My experience with Hawaii Driving School is mixed. My sister and I both signed up for packages together. We each purchased 10 driving lessons. The positive aspects of my experience was the teaching itself. Carlos was a nice teacher in terms of knowing what our particular weaknesses were and ways to overcome it. My sister passed her Road Test and I am very happy for her; as for me I did not. That was not particularly his fault because I felt like I needed more practice anyways. The negative aspects of my experience was his professionalism, more specifically scheduling. He was always late to our lessons, with the excuse that we were a bit far from his location and that there was traffic near our area.That is something to keep in mind I believe when one schedules with a student, taking traveling time into consideration. My sister and I would wait up to 30 minutes for him to arrive at times. He should set time aside based on location/time for traveling between lessons; as well as schedule as many lessons realistically possible for himself without burning himself out. He is the sole instructor of the school, so he handles scheduling and I believe he has an assistant who helps with scheduling road tests. If it weren't for that , I feel I would have personally had a better experience with the school. The car itself was a really old car, and the brakes were difficult. I know you're supposed to learn how to adapt to any sort of car, but in terms of learning, that was a bit of a struggle for me. I try to be fair with him because he seems like a nice man, and you can tell he cares at the end of the day, but in terms of overall experience, it wasn't as great as it could have been, hence 3 stars. read more

I can't trust any of the negative experiences said here. I've been driving for 12 years in Spain but I had to get the American driver license. I live in Jackson Heights, so I saw this driving school and I asked about how to do it. I didn't want to take so many classes because I know how to drive in general, but not here in NY. Carlos, the best instructor ever, took me for a class and made me drive around Jackson Heights and he let me decide whatever I thought I needed under his advice. I didn't have my car and I wanted the exam fastest possible, so I decided to take the package with 5 lessons, the car and the appointment. He tough me everything I needed for passing the exam, he explained me each detail and each thing about the instruction during the test. He prepared me the best he can for the exam. I've just took my exam in Jamaica, after 1 week since I got my learner permit, and I felt so comfortable. I got my license driver with 0 points and I applied everything he told me. Carlos was an amazing instructor who goes above and beyond to help you learn how to drive. He is unbelievably patient and helpful with me, and was extremely flexible and accommodating in the timing of our lessons. I passed my road test easily after all the hours of diligent driving instruction he gave me. Some driving schools will suck all the money they can out of you, try not to teach you well, and hope you fail your road test so you have to keep paying for lessons. I had that experience with a different driving school a couple of years ago. Carlos is the exact opposite; he genuinely cares about helping people achieve their license and does everything he can to help you without ripping you off. read more

Took a packaged lesson, and passed with flying colors on the first try! Before taking these lessons, and being a native NYer, I've had 0 driving experience being in front of the wheel - aside from bumper cars, and posing inside Bentley's and Ferrari's to make friends jealous of a car I didn't own (but hey, how many of you have sat inside a Bentley? I rest my case.) The instructor, Carlos, is patient and knowledgable, with plenty of techniques to teach. He'll teach you his ABC's of driving, and make sure that you don't forget to flick your turn signal when turning...or look behind you while backing up...or fix and check the mirrors before driving, you know where i'm getting at. Now i'm not saying these happened to me, but if it did, he would've reminded me with his ABC's. He'll help you work on your weaknesses, so you can be a better driver, pass your road test, and be the proud designated driver on your weekend shenanigans that you were meant to be (PSA: Don't Drink and Drive.) The car...well yes, it's old - but old is experienced; a veteran of these city lights. Yea, it's not the latest model, but it runs damn fine compared to...ok I have nothing to compare it to, but it runs well. It's also a testament to how well he takes care of his car. You'll have time to play with your fancy digital dashboard when you sign for your own car, but the fact that it's a simple car makes you focus on the important things. The car's pedals are just the right amount of sensitive, you feel it purr when you step on the gas, and feel it resist when you step on the brakes; he'll also remind you to be gentle, so as not to give you and your passengers neck problems. All-in-all, I had a pleasant experience with Carlos and Hawaii Driving School - I can't recommend him, and the school, enough. read more

A great experience. They helped me from the beginning of the process in making sure that I completed my five hour course and recommending me a course with a discount to scheduling the exam. I didn't have to do anything but schedule and show up to lessons ready to go. I was able to pass my test after only 5 lessons with the school and two lessons off on my own. It was well worth the money. The instructor really takes the time to explain the process to you and makes sure you understand the formula to passing the exam! read more

One of the most professional business I have ever come across (That is after living in Asia, Europe and North America!) Carlos is one of the most professional person I have ever met. Thanks to him, I passed the driving test and got my driving license in less than three weeks. I took 10 driving lessons and he was able to instill the confidence in me in that short duration (I had no prior driving experience) He did not try to micro manage me at all and his precise yet perfect instructions were very helpful. I could see that he actually cared about my driving unlike many others who just extract money and waste your time. He is also very down to earth and humble person. I called this company today after reviewing their website and the TWO reviews out there. Upon hearing the voice on the other end of the line, I stated to the representative that I was interested in getting driving lessons for my son and that I would like to ask a few questions. He said ok. Once I asked my first question, which was "may I start off with knowing what kind of vehicle your company uses?" The response was "first off, where are you calling from?" I asked if that mattered in terms of me asking about their services and possibly buying a package. He replied in the most unprofessional tone "yes it does matter where you are calling from, matterfact THANK YOU FOR YOUR CALL GOODBYE!". I am rather happy that I was able to see what I could expect from this place before spending a penny. You are in the Queens DMV schools listings, you are in the Queens yellow pages, online under schools in queens there lists HAWAI DRIVING SCHOOL....it's safe to say I'm in Queens as well. I don't recommend this school, the instructor Carlos is unprofessional. I took a couple of lessons here and suddenly he disappeared. Never again answered my calls. What kind of driving school does that? not a good one obviously. Not to mention that the car is pretty old and the seat belt is all stretched out. So I don't even know whats the point of having a seat belt in that car. Just steer clear of this school. read more

Carlos helped me get my drivers license after Ferrari Driving School failed to prepare me properly. I had already failed the exam twice and had given up for a couple of years, but I had renewed determination to get my license when I saw that I needed it to get a humvee license (I'm in the Army Reserves). I was immediately pleased upon hearing that Carlos was also a veteran! He took extra time to make sure I understood everything and I didn't have to break the bank. Carlos is an awesome instructor. The best thing about him is that he understands that each student is different and therefore coaches the individual accordingly. He helps you correct your weak points and also answers the questions patiently. At times he might be tough, but that is for the student's benefit. He teaches you how to drive the right and practical way that gives you the confidence to pass the test. Even while we were waiting for our turn, he kept on motivating that I will be able to do it, and be confident about it. Unprofessional, rude manners, terrible at scheduling, doesn't schedule lessons or road tests in timely manner. Yeah his prices are cheap, but it was a HEADACHE learning at this place. Doesn't callback to schedule lessons or road test, doesn't follow through, is unorganized, disappears for weeks, endless excuses. And then he's rude and impatient after all that. Very quick-tempered and rude while teaching. Not worth your time or energy; do yourself a favor and go to a different driving school!! read more

When I was committed to making myself learn how to drive I was searching around my area for driving schools. I read the review above and a few other reviews and thought this would be the right school for me. I just want to start off by saying the car used by the instructor is a VERY old Nissan. If I had to guess I would say its about year 1992 or so it's breaks are horrible and you will never experience a smooth drive in the car. Second, although the instructor is very sweet as a person, he can be rude at times and just yell at you making you nervous and loose your focus on driving. Lastly, he may at times just make you drive in a straight direction for 10-15 minutes loosing time away from learning and mastering other parts of driving. Although I did pass my road test the first time with the help of my mother I would not recommend this driving school. Spend the additional few dollars and choose Ferrari or another school that guarantees a better car and better teaching experience! read more
