Washington Heights offers dance, porcelain, theater, painting, pottery, and children's art classes, among the many offerings at this hopping little cultural center. The building doesn't look like much either outside or in, but the instructors are consistently talented and accomplished, and the students have nothing but good things to say. If you have children in the Lakewood area, look into Washington Heights for summer camps where they'll have enough fun they'll forget that they're learning something, plus be out of your hair! I've noticed significant progression in my daughters art skills after coming here. During our last visit, the woman working with my daughter created a custom drawing upon my daughters request. She even spent some additional time beyond the paid art lesson, to help teach her some techniques and let her finish her painting. At the birthday party we hosted, the staff helped me set up snacks and decorations that we brought. They were great with follow up and reminders when we were planning the party as well. I feel this studio is for the "few select few" whom Ms Witherspoon can teach and have quite a high level of experience. The website indicated you will be taught how to paint but this was not the case for me. I knew nothing about painting only having done paint by number through the years. It was suggested that I purchase over $400 of art supplies and through Jerry's only to find out with now being with the Greenwood Village Curtis Art Center that I do not need many of the paints nor brushes. I am learning about value, placement and how to mix colours to achieve and learn about the colour wheel and how to make the colours work for my painting. I was interested in painting a landscape and found the selection to choose from was around animals and things I was not interested in. I stopped because the only print that even came close just did not do anything for me.

The owner and facilitator (she prefers this title rather than teacher), is wonderfully supportive and accepting of all the students, their creative process and final outcome. Kids and adults not only leave with their finished piece of art, but a sense they are accepted and celebrated for the unique person they all are. The actual studio is set up a hill amongst the evergreens with a wonderful front porch and multiple art rooms for creating. Love the concept!
