The appointment was scheduled for around July. They kept calling me to confirm and I confirmed. In fact, they called me MULTIPLE TIMES to confirm, and I confirmed. A few days before the appointment, they cancelled saying they couldn't treat me because I have a pacemaker. Okay, fine. Earlier THIS year, they called me to schedule another appointment for today (06/10/25.) I'm thinking, "Great! They sorted things out, I'm good to go!" In fact, last MONTH they called me to schedule the PROCEDURE in August. And just like the FIRST time, they kept calling me to confirm and I did. In fact, they sent me TEXTS, and I'd confirm those too. Just like anybody else would, I'm thinking we're all on track! Then I go in for the appointment today: Me: "Hello, I'm here for my appointment." Receptionist: *puzzled "Uh, hhmm... what's your name?" *I give her my name Receptionist: *checks computer "Oh, your appointment was cancelled." Me: *trying to remain calm "Wait a minute, how can that be? I talked to you guys confirming, even confirmed with your texts!" Receptionist: *checks computer "It's saying here we reached out to confirm your appointment but never got an answer." Me: "Yeah, nah... I TALKED to you guys! Confirmed BOTH appointments. Jelene, a Kama'aina who recently came back to Hawaii after her 25 plus years professional training and experience on the east coast is brilliant! She spends time to access and converse about symptoms and then develops a plan to teach you how to move forward to alleviate pain. Her experience matters! She is well versed in the physiology and outer workings of the body. Her brilliant mind and observations are gifts as she translates and demonstrates in layman terms her findings. She has a sense of humor and a personal history of physical therapy herself and understands traumatic events that affect the mind and body. Ask for Jelene if you need PT.

I came in with a torsional ovarian cyst and was in excruciating pain. She has absolutely no compassion and was completely incompetent; She was accompanied by a holier than thou twenty something blondie nurse came and treated me like a drug seeker. Neither knew I'm a physician in the community. If they looked in my chart, they could see I don't have any drug history. However, I do have an extremely complicated neurosurgical history. After writhing in pain for literally hours with an extremely high blood pressure, Miss Blondie Remedial Nurse comes in and ask how I am doing and offers me a Celebrex! Are you kidding me? I screamed at her as my pain was excruciating. She then gives me her blondie high school attitude and brings in Hammer who does NOTHING except for scolding me for yelling at the nurse all while I am curled up in a ball, writhing in pain, and begging to be transferred out. Absolute disgrace of an incompetent doctor. I have had several strokes and I can't have spiking blood pressurelike that. Dr. Hammer was even arguing with my doctor on the phone, She is incompetent, arrogant, and should not in medicine. You know a doctor isn't good when they work as BOTH a hospitalist and Emergency Room doctor. I learned later through one of my professional colleagues that she has a terrible reputation and impossible to work with.

Many of the RNs are traveling and maybe only here for a few months. So I felt the care was very well-rounded since they bring their skills, experience and expertise from other hospitals around the country. I also felt the full-time long-term providers were excellent. The food is exceptional and plant based options are always available. My wait in the ER was never more than 35 minutes, except when coming in by ambulance. In those cases, no wait at all. The facilities are dated in some ways, but not so when it comes to equipment - X-ray, MRIs, etc , all in good condition. I had 2 MRIs there actually. Went well.

He was there 4 days getting IV hydration . Doctor response took a long time . We asked if someone was assisting him walk around the hall to keep his strength up . The staff said yes , he said no . Staff said he just did not remember . We have access to his chart . No notes about walking . We asked several times for someone to assist him to shower. 4 days no shower . His B/P improved and he was able to be discharged. 4 days in bed only assistance was to bathroom. No physical activity, no shower , nothing . Unfortunately they are the only show in town . If they paid our local nurses what they pay traveling nurses to fill in we might have a well staffed caring facility. His diet was not conducive to his difficulty with digestion. It seems there was no continuity of care . The oncologist could not take the time to come see him while he was there . That would be to convenient. He will have to come back up to same location next week for oncology consult . No patient advocate came in as we requested . The social worker came in and asked what he wanted to do without checking with the family or making sure there was care giving set up prior to discharge ! He lives alone . Just diagnosed with stage 4 cancer . We count on the "care givers" to coordinate and recommend the "next step" nothing . Luckily he has family to help . We have never been down this road . We needed information as well . As much as we asked we got nothing . We called hospice . We got the appointment for him next week . We got transportation arranged . We researched care needed . Diet conducive to his diagnosis. Lucky he has our mom and strong sisters !!! We really feel we are on our own . You are your own advocate. Unfortunately he does not know the questions to ask or really what he has or what to expect . He is not a druggy or street person . He is an adult that needs good medical care .

However, his PA Dennis Avarro has been consistently rude and even condescending. I would actually recommend this office overall, but I have to give the 2-star rating because of the blatant disrespect that we received on these occasions. Here are a couple examples: On a follow-up visit, we consulted with Dennis Avarro about my father's heart condition. When doing the assessment of his weight and diet and about the effects on my father's health, he stated, "Then why are you still fat?" - this was not said in a joking manner. Although my father might have had a near-MI episode in the past, Dennis' brain needs to get checked for hypoxia because of how irritable he is. We request Dr. Shikuma specifically now. On our last visit, we were greeted at the desk and asked to wait in the office. While we were waiting, coincidentally, a young Hawaiian woman stormed out of the exam room and stated loudly something to the effect of, "Just bill me, I don't care. So unprofessional!" She spoke with the person at the front desk and left. We already knew who examined her. It definitely wasn't the Dr. She was livid to say the least. All credit to Dr. Shikuma, as he sees these conditions every day and really demonstrates the professionalism that a FACC, or any physician, should exude. I'm just unsure of why he hasn't recognized his physician assistant as his weak link. In the meantime, such blatantly negative experiences round this review out to a 2-star. I wholeheartedly (yup, pun intended) believe that establishments that deserve a good review are only those that are capable of delivering consistently. Dennis causes this office to be inconsistent in patient care.
