We recently purchased a new home and called on HIG to meet us for our inspection/walk-through with the builder. EXPERIENCE: The inspector was at the home before we arrived and after we left. Every square inch was inspected including the "attic". She would've stayed longer but we heard the builder's rep was making it known of her overstayed but warranted welcome. SMH! It was amazing to see all the blue painter's tape markers she left for imperfections, damages, defects and questionable workmanship that we'd overlook or miss. But, the most shocking thing she found was behind the electrical panel. One of the wires wasn't coated or covered with a protectant that could've resulted in an electrical fire. Wow, just wow. A few days later, a professionally-made binder was given to us, complete with photos and explanations of what was done and found. OVERALL: A great investment on top of the one we already made. read more

I've utilized many inspection companies over the years, but Nalu Bustillos of Hawaii Inspection group missed some major issues: an over/stove that wouldn't turn off, a dishwasher that failed on its first cycle (both that needed to be replaced), multiple drawers that didn't function properly, extensive mold on roller blinds and multiple outlets and switches that didn't function. When these items were brought to their attention, they blamed proximity to the ocean creating the corrosion in the two months from the inspection to when I started some renovation. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY! Horrendous experience!! This company sent its President( 0wner Robert) to do an inspection on our property - their #1 guy! This guy had no clue what he was talking about when pressed on the issues we faced with him. He directly lied to our realtor about what he inspected telling him there was nothing wrong. Then 2 days later he presented a deal killing report withe several misstated errors. He refused to adjust his report after presented with other professional opinions including a statement from a manufacturer and made an issue of several important items in our home which were all non-issues . Due to what was reported I had (3) other professional contractors cross check the items to see if any remedy was needed to the stated items. Every single one of them said the items were completely erroneous and they couldn't believe the items were identified in the first place! ALL were a non issue. Of course this was at a great cost to us to verify what we thought and knew in the first place. The report killed the deal. I strongly considered legal action against this company due to their negligence.In Hawaii there's no agency that oversees this industry, so these inspectors can pretty much do what they please with no repercussions nor legal ramifications. In this case, the inspector made up an issue to make himself sound smarter then he was. If you're on the buying side look at the other negative reviews. This company may not be giving you an accurate depiction. They don't really know what they're doing. It could be catastrophic, If you're a seller, you may get stuck with this company in a transaction and they may try to seem like the smartest guy in the room, identifying items to correct that may not need correction. In either case, if you're looking to use Hawaii Inspection Group save yourself any worries and find another inspector. read more

I'm in the processs of purchasing an oceanfront condo and had Hawaii Inpection Group do my inspection. The inspector was not only timely, but thorough. He followed the scope of work for the inspection. He pointed out various components he thought I should be made aware of. Specifically, he pointed out where the main water shut off valve was located. He told me the water supply line to the refrigerator bypassed the main shut off valve and gave me a fix solution. This would allow me to shut off all the water in the condo to prevent a possible water leak when the condo is unoccupied. I used Hawaii Inspection Group two years ago when I purchased a home. If I purchase another property I will call Hawaii Inspection Group. read more

First of all I wanted to give Hawaii Inspection Group 5 STARS NOT 4.. John Lodge arrived on time but after a few inspections had to stop because I had issues with a previous plumber Ricky from South Maui Plumbing that I hired to fix an underground leak and he didn't finish the work. We scheduled another day to continue the inspection because Maui Plumbing was coming to reroute the plumbing up into the attic. It was kind of him to not charge me for having to return again. John thoroughly inspected all the plumbing done by Maui Plumbing and South Maui Plumbing. I'm so thankful that I hired Hawai'i Inspection Group. He found some problems with the plumbing work and even electrical issues that needed attention immediately by an electrician. He made certain that everything is up to code. Some of the work was a poor choice by the plumbers. It was just a quick fix. I highly recommend using this company not just for purchasing a home but for any major repairs and renovations. Once that wall is closed or you know nothing or hardly about electrical or plumbing, you may have issues with them down the road. He offered on his report preventative measures too. John helped to save me from future financial stresses by discovering some of the work that isn't up to code and could cause further leaks and fire hazard Down the road. I had several questions after the report was issued and he kindly answered them based on his experience which helped me with a current issue I was having with an insurance company. "With so few reviews, your opinion of Hawaii Inspection Group could be huge"? "Eeek! Methinks not", indeed! When you spend around a mil on an oceanfront condo on Maui's "Gold Coast" you really don't expect the inspector to miss: 1. The obvious signs of wet (rot) on a wall by the slider to the lanai... 2. Four missing screens (a problem on the 7th floor!)... 3. The bathroom fan that sounded like a 747 on takeoff... 4. An inoperative A/C unit... 5. The fact that all (all!) the windows stuck... (he did catch the sliders) 6. Damaged grout on the lanai... 7. Missing irrigation to one of the three planters (the missing plants should have been a tip off!) Unfortunately, when you make a purchase and then settle from several thousand miles away, you are at the mercy of the Realtor handling the sale and the people he chooses to do such things as the inspection. Hawaii Inspection Group made no effort to stand behind their work and, indeed, failed even to respond to a letter identifying the problems which we included with payment of their sizable bill. Maybe more reviews will come rolling in when other customers get over their disgust and decide to say something! Or maybe the one star reviews will save others from making this mistake! read more

We bought a property in Lahaina and we relied on the Hawaii Inspection Group to be our eyes on doing an inspection of the property before we purchased the property. They did a poor job in inspecting the windows, screens and electrical, and it cost us money that we paid that the previous owners should of been responsible for. read more

I've had the opportunity now to work with HIG four times, and gladly recommend them, both for home inspections and mold testing. We have had them do home inspections on 2 homes - one we ended up purchasing and one we did not, and in both cases, we got the reports very quickly, were able to meet with the inspector as soon as they finished and got a walk through of the properties with detailed notes - and a very detailed follow up report. These were thorough and useful, and the inspector (Chris) has been great to work with both times. Additionally we had water damage in our house recently and we used HIG to do two mold tests - one that showed we had mold spores and a follow up after getting a remediation. In both cases, they were able to schedule appointments quickly, the service was provided at a reasonable price, and we received the very thorough reports quickly afterwards (thanks Bud). I purchased a four-bedroom house in Maui and in need of an inspection. Two of the rooms in this four-bedroom house are boarded up from the rest of the house and have separate entrances. I had to ask the tenants to leave the house on the day of inspection since the mold tests were ordered. The morning of the inspection, the inspector told me that two of the rooms that have separate entrances are treated as Ohana, dispite that both rooms are connected to the rest of the house and the doors can still be opened to the house. Therefore there are three separate houses. Instead of the five hundred dollars, I will be charged three times the money instead. I was furious of course but I know it will be difficult to get all tenants out again and I'm pressing for time. After lengthy negotiation, I was able to knock down a few hundred dollars. The inspector did a terrible job too. He's lazy. There were so many things that he marked as inaccessible but in fact only if he would just lift his fingers and moved a few things to look.
