I was told today that my primary care physician Dr. Samuel Hawk, no longer sees patients physically I guess he only sees them on FaceTime... Dr. Hawk was my primary care physician from when he was working out of a physical therapy, rehab clinic. Back then Dr. Hawk would personally meet and greet you and he had a genuine connection with his patients. I guess now his clinic has increased in clients but decreased in service,in my opinion... There is no longer a one on one visit with Dr. Hawk and that's rather unfortunate. My phone call today to the clinic was rather uncomfortable. I felt very judged and in someway it was like I was being scolded like I was a five your old child. I guess the morning coffee didn't kick in for some even though it was nearly noon. I would recommend anyone going to Dr. Hawk's clinic when it becomes Dr. Hawk clinic again. and only If Dr. Hawk is going to see you physically one on one as a primary care physician... read more

PASS ON THIS PLACE. Went looking for a PCP, and since this office got good reviews, I decided to try it. I liked the fact that they had office hours into the evening, as my days don't allow appointments. Free parking, tho completely small and tight. One way in and out. So, if you have a big car, best of luck. First off, they have no system in place. When I came in, I signed in on their chart, and then I waited...and waited...and waited. Whoever it was looked at the chart, but didn't call me. Eventually after quite a long wait, I approached the front desk. No one, on their own initiative asked if I had been helped. Poor service at the front of the office. When I finally got called in, I saw one of their doctors who works there part-time. He was definitely not the greatest. As I hadn't seen a doctor in over 6 years. He took vitals, but didn't take weight or height. He scheduled a bunch of lab work to be done, and then added in an extra at the end. (When I went to Diagnostic Labs to do my blood work, it took extra long because the extra lab wasn't with the other ones, so they had to do extra paperwork. AND on top of that, I had to pay for one of my labs...don't know which, although Dr. Yepishin said they'd be all covered...uh, no.) Then, after 3 months, I get a BILL from Hawk Health for over $200!!! I had and still have insurance. It was simply a routine check-up, so I completely don't understand why I'm being billed, unless they don't take my insurance...which if they didn't, shouldn't someone say something BEFORE I see the doctor?!? Again, no system!!! Now, when I'm trying to call to get this cleared up, I leave a message with billing, and no one calls me back. I call again during office hours and get an automated voice system that doesn't work, as I don't have the extension to anyone in the office. It says to leave a message, but then cuts off. I just don't understand...their office hours say they're open, but the message says they're closed. Once this gets squared away (which it better), I'm on the search again for another doctor's office. read more

I just took my son in for his first appointment. It started with phone calls. Reception has been consistently friendly, kind, and helpful with insurance questions. At our first appointment, Dr. Hawk spent A LOT of time with us and I never once felt rushed. In spite of running a large clinic with many demands, he handled everything with apparent ease and we felt very comfortable the whole time. He is an expert with kindness and patience to round out his great knowledge and insight. He answered a lot of questions I had, spoke to us (and his staff) very respectfully, and answered an incredible amount of questions of mine. We needed some forms and the staff member who usually completes them was leaving so the clinical director took time out of her presumably very busy workload to walk another staff member through the process, ensuring that everything was completed correctly so we didn't have to come back for the forms later. Doctor Hawk is easily the best doctor I have ever had. I need to visit a doctor regularly so personality goes a long way. I expect doctors to know their medicine. Sadly, I do not expect them to be personable. Often enough, they are not. Doctor Hawk has a wonderful sense of humor, and he puts me at ease. I eagerly anticipate my visits with him which is something I never thought I would say about a GP. I trust his knowledge and I suggest him to friends and family. I am proud to have such a great doctor. Wait times are minimal. The waiting space is refreshing. Nothing about his clinic screams, "Medical institution!" It is a warm and inviting space. His staff is friendly. They know my name and are not afraid of a quick chat. Calls are always returned and scheduling is a breeze. I have renewed faith in modern medicine. Other GPs should drop in and just see how he runs this place. They might be humbled but we would be better off if more practices worked like his. read more

I love Dr Hawk! I stopped seeing my pediatrician when I was 22, and just never transitioned to an adult doctor. At 27, upon graduating grad school, I decided it was time to start taking care of myself. Dr. Hawk showed no judgment, and was really encouraging and upbeat about my attempt at lifestyle changes and desire to live a healthier life. I started making appointments for my fiance, who has not had a primary care physician since his late teens (he's now in his 30s!) He's so doctor-phobic, and puts off making appointments and getting bloodwork until the last minute, but Dr. Hawk has been nothing but supportive very step of the way. In addition, the front staff is awesome - Cyrus is on top of everything, and Christina is a hoot to talk to. I've never had to wait a long time (aside from some snafus with their electronic booking system, which appear to be worked out) and the office is prompt in returning phone calls. read more

I really hadn't had a doctor in several years and an issue prompted me to visit the emergency ward at Queens. From there I was told I needed to find a general doctor to do future appts or see specialists. I really hadnt had a personal doctor for several years so i looked in the phone book for someone who was LGBT friendly, which was very important to me. It's not actually easy to find one if I do say and I think what would be important to others as well. So, I read that he dealt with a wide range of people and i read some reviews and made the call. I've been seeing him for about 3 months now and couldn't be happier. I am working with him on an ongoing foot issue and I also approached him on some other issues and he listened to me and made suggestions, and set things in motion that I would have never done on my own, so i am definitely on a path towards a better and healthier future. I was so not looking for a sterile, hospital oriented environment, as I used to go to UC San Francisco Medical center years ago, and remained there for a long time before moving to Honolulu. I really wanted something laid back, peaceful and welcoming. His staff are sweet and as the other person says, knows you by name and are there to say hello. I do like his hours and if I needed, I could go in later in the day since he has early evening hours, so that is a good piece of mind to have. It is enjoyable to go to his office and visit and definately not a fearful task that I used to have. read more

I am so glad I found Dr Sam Hawk. He is supportive and takes the time to listen to my health care issues. He spends more time with examination than any other MD i have had in the past. Have been going to Dr. Hawk now for a couple of months, referred by another physician. The location is good; our first visit we didn't know exactly where it was, but parked in the back of the building and we found it on the second floor to the left of Longs. Free parking, yay! The office is comfortable and I really like Dr. Hawk. He listens well, and I feel that all my questions are addressed. He is very patient, and I don't feel rushed or that he is in a hurry. Using the Hawk Health website was helpful for me, lots of information there. We found it easy to make appointments using the site and there are plenty of times available a few days out, so you can call the office or Dr. Hawk if you need one sooner. Very convenient that the office hours run later than usual practices. From what I understand, the practice is expanding soon as well. If I need Dr. Hawk, he is quick to answer the Google voicemail link on the website; I click it, it calls my cell and I leave a message. read more

Like I said before, I do not have any problems with medical animals, I in fact love dogs; but the truth of the matter is if it will be in a medical office, it MUST not have an obvious odor thats disturbing to patients. Also, your nurse is very kind but rarely answers phone calls or return phone calls in a timely manner. Busy or not, patients should be number one priority and feel at ease to know that their physician is there to ease and address any kind of concerns. I haven't gone to a doctor in about twenty years...yes, 20 years. So, I was really nervous about getting a physical. But, seeing as I'm getting older, I felt like I just needed to get a general check up. There are two staff by the name of Stephanie. The one I spoke to over the phone to make an appointment was really friendly and made my experience setting an appointment less awkward for me. However, the other Stephanie that was at the front desk when I went to fill out some paperwork the day of my appointment was a little timid. On top of that, she was really busy answering calls and scheduling appointments for other patients. I guess Hawk Health is a popular clinic, right? Anyhow, after a little wait, I was finally called in to see Dr. Hawk. He's super super nice and friendly. He took time to get to know me through small chit-chat. He also made my physical not so awkward, which I really loved. I told him about some physical problems I was having, and he wrote me up a request to do lab work. I like the fact that he gave me options of clinics to choose from to get my blood work done--as opposed to specifying an exact location of his choosing. He also offered to do some work on my neck, which was causing me pain, the next time I see him in about 3 weeks. The physical therapy made me a little nervous, because I was thinking he was going to give me an intense shiatsu-type of massage. I cannot tell you how relieved I was when he told me, "No, No, No, we don't do that kind of stuff here. In fact, we really don't recommend it." YAAAY! I was relieved. I'm so torn about writing this review for all the world to see, but I can't be selfish, I must be truthful and let the cards fall where they may, so here goes! I'm a 43 year old female and have been a doctorphobe for quite the majority of my adult life, beyond the average "nobody likes going to the doctor" stuff, I seriously had phobia of doctors. Only after my young daughter and I spent 2 years in the Pediatric cancer trenches, having totally neglected my own body while sleeping in a hospital chair (189 inpatient days), did it become painfully clear, that I myself would have to find a caregiver. When I absolutely couldn't put it off any longer, I scoured the web for doctors and read about everyone in my 5 mile radius (in Honolulu that's a ton of doctors). For some reason people just don't leave many reviews for doctors, resteraunts yeah, moving companies yeah, doctors, not so much, so I was surprised to see so many reviews for this Samuel Hawk. When I first tried to make an appointment, his phones were being upgraded and not working great which gave me a little more time to procrastinate and research this guy. I mean if I'm going to let him in my personal space and have to tell him personal things, I want to know what he's about. I prefer to think of it as thorough research, although I know there are those who would think of it as borderline excessive (read stalking), it's not! So the first thing that got my attention, was the sheer number of reviews this guy had vs. any other physician in Honolulu, definitely a good sign! The second thing that got my attention was that he was LGBT "friendly", being a heterosexual single Mom, I'm ashamed to admit, I had never even realized that was something a doctor would even have to say. Holy *hit, that means there are LGBT "unfriendly" doctors, and just like that, MY doctor phobia seemed pale by comparison to what someone else who actually had to worry about "unfriendly" doctors would face:( So then, I was faced with the uncomfortable idea that, out of all the doctors in Honolulu, there is only one LGBT friendly (that I saw), and I'm not L,G,B or T., so what am I going to do? After some deliberation and soull searching, I decided that I shouldn't have to miss out on the best doctor in town, after all it said, "friendly", not "exclusive". On my first visit, the office was sooo, not doctor "officy", that it took me off guard, I didn't know what I thought, it was clean and cozy, and not at all like any other doctors office I'd ever been to. If my phobia hadn't been on high alert, it would have totally relaxed me on the first visit, it was going to take more than cozy lobby and friendly staff to win me over! Anyway, short story long, I've been going there for a little over a year now. I've seen all of the doctors there for one thing or another and can say without hesitation that they are all very good doctors, Dr Hawk wouldn't hire them if they were not, but.........there is just no equal to Dr Hawk, sorry, I know, that's probably unfair to the other skilled medical professionals in the world, that's just how I feel. The first thing he worked on was my hand, I wasn't even there for my hand pain, it had been injured 9 MONTHS prior in a bicycle accident. The tendon in my hand had started to contract and I had maybe 25% strength and grip, another doctor had given me 2 cortisone shots which seemed to have made it worse. I was actually there to see the psychotherapist, trying to make peace with the trauma of my daughter's Leukemia treatment. I mentioned my hand pain having no idea that it could even be helped so long after I damaged it, I had chalked it up to something that would probably need surgery when my daughter was healthy again and I could no longer stand the pain. Dr Hawk just stepped in at the therapist request to take a look and did some minor manipulations, literallly less than 5 minutes and what he did hurt like *ell while he did it, which I wasn't expecting and kind of irritated me to be honest. It wasn't all magical and instant, but within a few days the strength in my hand was returning and within a couple of weeks, I was back to 80% with no additional treatment. For most people this would be enough, my phobia would not be so easily deterred though, so I wrote it off as "probably just time that it healed" after almost a year. So when I found myself in the worst back pain I have ever experienced, I went to the ER (super logical, I know). They offered me pain medication and I declined, instead asking for imaging to be done of my spine, I'm thinking I've got some missing vital pieces or something it hurt so bad. Much to my surprise, the ER doctor comes back and says, CT scan says your spine is fine.......but, you have 2 nodules in your left breast, we sent the images to your doctor (Dr Hawk), this isn't something that can wait. Have been with Dr. Hawk going on two years now. The main reason I started to see him was that he was an osteopath. When I realized he was also a general practitioner, I quickly changed from my previous doctor. There were some issues that I felt uncomfortable dealing with previous doctor, that I had no problem with Dr. Hawk. He made me feel comfortable, was supportive and has my best health interest in mind. He is quick to notice things that I may not have paid attention to. It has been fairly easy making appointments and in getting in to see him. I've now been waiting on them to release test results for over a month and I don't expect them to follow through on a simple email. I've been overly patient and willing to let their slide mistakes in something as important as including the right tests for blood work and follow through - but no more. I liked his demeanor and bedside manner so much during that one visit, I decided that he was the only doctor that I wanted to see for my routine office visits and to get a first opinion when I have a medical question. Since then he has not only provided great office service, he has recommend excellent specialists to help me when I've needed them. I always know that when I visit his office, Dr. Hawk will spend the time to understand and discuss the specific reason for my visit and follow up with me about previous visits to make sure that everything is okay. I had a difficult time finding a new primary care physician but saw Hawk Health was accepting new patients. On my first visit I was able to reach Dr Hawk by telephone and we made an appt right then and there. His office is clean, welcoming and not as stuffy as a hospital. There is little waiting as he sees you right on the time of your appt. I wanted a Dr with Osteopathic training as i am athletic and mostly need treatment for running or surfing injuries. Dr Hawk examined my injured knee and did some therapy on it. I have been to him several times over the past year and each time I leave I feel better and have a plan for recovery. I feel like Dr Hawk truly cares about my well being and spends the time listen and examining me. If you need a great Dr who is not going to spend 5 minutes then prescribe drugs then you should give them a call or schedule an appt online. read more

Up until this summer I had received amazing care from the hawk clinic but am now extremely disappointed. I sought care after feeling very ill for a week, was told my doctor wasn't available for the next month and chose to see another employee of the clinic. After being sent to the ER & a follow up at the clinic with more tests I did not receive a call back about my results despite voicing my concern about still feeling ill. I called after 2 weeks of not hearing back to try and schedule with my normal doctor/follow up on the results and was told they were not normal so they wanted to prescribe me something. I explained I had been having a really hard time and wasn't sure my body could handle it to which they responded they would need to discuss with me further and asked if I would be available for a call back that evening. Again, no call back. Despite me trying to schedule with my regular doctor the entire time (about 4 weeks) I was finally told they were no longer practicing. Not sure why this was kept from me for so long or why another GP wasn't recommended for continued care. The one thing I like best is the clinic is open on Saturdays which is GREAT because I work Mon-Fri and I can always be accommodated with an appointment. I've been going to Dr. Hawk for 2 years now. He is the best doctor I have ever had. He really cares about your health, he takes his time with you, he doesn't make you wait in the waiting room, and he is super knowledgeable and thorough. He will go the extra mile for his patients. He is also very smart, which will save you a lot of pain and suffering over time because he can prevent you from getting sick in the future. He is open to whatever the best solution would be. If there is something in your diet that is making you sick, he will be the one to notice it, but he isn't against prescribing medication if that's what it takes. I appreciate that he will suggest whatever is best, and that he knows so much about so many types of medicine. I completely trust Dr. Hawk and am glad to have him as my general practitioner. So much that when I go to another specialist, I've even been known to get a second opinion from Dr. Hawk, just because I trust him so much and know he will do what's best. He offers a warm and comforting atmosphere and is easy to talk to, so you can really get to the heart of the matter of whatever your symptoms are, which is especially needed when you are sick or suffering and need to see a doctor! This sharing is lengthy but I feel the story needs to be told so you the potential patient will understand my sincere gratitude to Dr. Samuel Hawk, DO: An August 2, 2014 fall from a ladder while trying to pick avocados resulted in life time injuries; burst compression fracture to my L1 vertebrae including a lost of 1.5 inches from my height because the upper section of the circular fracture broke off sending two bone slivers into my spinal canal and the other bone fragments falling around the outer area of the remaining L1. Also adding 2 herniated disks to the three I had prior to 8/2 for a total of five herniated disks. After spending nearly a month away from home; in the hospital, transferring to a rehabilitation center, being readmitted to the hospital, I was sent home with 120 tablets of Oxycodone-Acetaminophen (Percocet), 90 tablets of Baclofen, 30 tablets of Gabapentin, 60 tablets of Hydrocodon-Acetaminophen (Norico) and 120 tablets of Senexon (Senokot-S)...whew that was a serious cocktail. On my follow-up appointment with my PCP after being released, an appointment with a MD specializing Pain Management was made. From that consultation appointment, I was told that if I wanted to have pain relief without the prescribed pain medications in tablet form, I should consider one of the following because surgery to remove the bone fragments would be the last effort: 1. Burn the nerve endings in my spinal canal OR 2. Receive epidural shots on a regular basis into my spine but not entering the spinal canal. I was told the frequency varied among individual patients but the LIFETIME norm was a shot every six months to one shot annually, average one every nine months. My son, a third year DO (Doctor of Osteopathic) medical student at the time of my ladder-mishap come home for a month (8/30/2014 thru 9/29/2014) after I was released from the hospital on 8/30/2014 to help me get back on my feet and toush (buttocks) without assistance and accompany me to all of my medical appointments. He agreed, none of the pain management alternatives including surgery were worth its inherit risk. He sought a different solution and found Dr. Samuel Hawk, DO. After the initial treatment, I could walk with a cane, some deliberation, but I COULD WALK without stopping for a stretch-break every several steps. After subsequent treatments and in before my son had to return to his rotations, I could drive, sit for more than 10 minutes without feeling pain and stiffness, take the dog out for her half-hour to forty-five minutes walks twice a day, squat to pick up her poop, do the things I did, but definitely slower and with caution. The only task I can not do, nor could any doctor "fix" is enabling me to lift more than ten pounds. This restriction caused me to give up home care for my husband and mother because I could not pick either after a fall, something my husband did often or lift the wheelchair from the car truck, the mobile device used by my mother on walks over a block long. Dr. Samuel Hawk is very knowledge, well versed but speaks "layman," has great patience, lots of empathy and above all he is honest. After treating me for almost six months, he told me that I had reached a plateau and that he could not do anything more for me other than maintenance. He said of course he would be glad to provide the beneficial message to my back muscles, but recommended yoga and messages by masseurs who were knowledgeable about back injuries. I started both and he was absolutely correct. As long as I regularly attend Hot Yoga sessions, 2 to 3 times a week, have a message every third week (or sooner if my muscles are screaming "Ouch, I'm tight"), be careful with my daily activities to avoid all falls and accidents, I feel almost as good as before that fateful day 8/2/2014. I have not taken any pain meds less than two weeks after being released from on 8/30/2014. Should I need any other medical care, I certainly would be seeing Dr. Hawk for treatment. Dr. Hawks is amazing!!! I have been to many doctors about my chronic long term back problems and I was consistently told that there was no explanation for my back pain, because they couldn't feel anything and the x-rays showed only a slight distortion. All the doctors solutions was medication and stretches that didn't work until Dr. Hawk! He is incredibly! Every time I went to see him for my back pain depending on how it felt and he treated me according to my pain, without medication. Amazing physician. Dr. Hawk takes the time to really get to know what is really going on with you. I was referred to him in 2012 when I had nagging pains in my back and neck and have been going to him ever since I found out he was a primary care physician. He is down to earth and very easy to talk to. He is very knowledgeable and is always looking at what is in the best interest of you as a patient. He has a way about him that makes it ok to bring up problems and issues that he sees and is passionate about helping you get through anything and everything for the future. He has an aura about him that makes you excited about wanting to be healthy and be the best that you can be.
