Did you know that every time a car gets towed off the street for forgetting to move during peak hours the city of Hawthorne gets a cut of $100+?!?! Not to mention if the owner never comes to claim that car it can be auctioned off and then the city of Hawthorne gets even more money! Just because Hawthorne is surrounded by better cities it thinks it can charge it's people higher prices like better cities, but alas, Hawthorne you are not as special as your neighbors! Hawthorne does something called "peak tow" hours where they steal your car and demand you pay a ransom to get it back! This seems like a desperate attempt to gouge money from it's "poorer" hard-working people with no where to park when they get off their blue collar jobs because we're all crammed in rows of tiny apartment buildings with less than ample parking. I've often wondered why they don't do this in the richer areas of the city. I guess they need to make up the money somehow. For the higher rent prices, constant street sweeping and "peak tow" you would think the streets would be MUCH cleaner, there'd be more events, more services and less crime. But no Hawthorne is definitely a "knock-off" of a city still charging like they're the "real thing". Stay in Torrance, El Segundo, Lawndale, Inglewood, etc because at least you'll get your money's worth. read more

The way they fixed the streets sucks, very confusing. Last year they announced the mall would re-open but now I see a hotel is going up faster than the mall. I guess it's nice to see that our kids will have faster access to a hotel rather than a mall. Where is all the money going? We need to investigate this city. Nothing is done for kids, no summer camps like Lawndale. Why don't we have bowling alleys, big restaurants, Incredible Johns, speed zone? That old mall is pretty big, we want to see some action. Hawthorne is my home and I love it. Everywhere could improve, but our city is really in need of a strong infusion of local pride and localism to support it. Mayor Vargas seems to support that, and Hawthorne is generally a nice place to live, even in the poorer parts. Stay strong city hall, get even cooler. read more

We stayed at the Ayres hotel which I guess is on the west side of Hawthorne and I didn't think it was bad. But I've read that this city is run down and there are bad parts, just like any city. On the west side there seemed to be a ton of new businesses opening. We didn't venture much further into Hawthorne on the east side. If you stay on the west side, you should be ok.... I have been calling the animal control office at Hawthorne City Hall since 8 AM this morning it is now 4:30 PM still have not received a call from that office after calling the police department to express my concerns I find if there is only one officer assigned to animal control me as a citizen of the city of Hawthorne find it very hard to believe that in one persons absence the whole department is shut down I lost two of my dogs yesterday been searching high and low and the great city of Hawthorne that I live in was not and is not equipped to help their citizens poor poor poor service you The city of Hawthorne read more

Parts of this city are a bit run down, but if you know where to go, you'll find some great places to eat! While most parts are east of the 405 and south of the 105, I do believe 360 at Southbay (a very nice luxury apartment/condo community) now counts as part of Hawthorne. If you want to live close to LAX and have a nice apartment or a nice little one-story house, Hawthorne fits the bill. It's just east of all the big aerospace corporations, like Northrop, Boeing, Raytheon, etc. read more

The City just revamped Hawthorne Bl. What a pain it is to drive anywhere on Hawthorne Bl. The signals are so poorly timed, you go from signal to signal. As others have mentioned the signal at Hindry & Rosecrans is a camera trap. The yellow light is so short you dont have time to stop before the camera goes off. $490.00. I'll go somewhere else to shop from now on. Too bad I cant give the City zero stars. read more

Counter staff is rude. Human feces everywhere. Broken glass, trash, old furniture and tires. City Counsel must be pocketing all the $ in the budget. Hawthorne Blvd's traffic lights are incorrectly timed so it takes 15 minutes to drive 1/2 a mile. No one follows COVID guidelines and there are huge, unmasked family gatherings. I moved to Hawthorne four years ago from Long Beach, a beautiful, well run city with organized traffic and traffic signals and a beautiful sense of community. Hawthorne is none of these things. I've tried to give it a chance to like it for four years, and I am always completely frustrated just driving to and from home. Traffic signals are absolutely horribly set up and are timed terribly so it takes at least twice as long to get anywhere. Whatever civil planner designed Hawthorne Blvd. with all those weird turns, center islands, etc should be fired. Why a horrendous design! It's inconvenient, confusing, and dangerous. And then on top of that? They poured all this money in to re-do it...the same poorly designed way! My street only has room to park on one side, and it's so narrow you can barely squeeze by. Streets like Inglewood have no turn lanes, so if you want to turn left you have to hold up all the traffic in that lane. Not only terribly inconvenient but also dangerous. There is absolutely no sense of community here, there's practically no trees around where I live, it's not a very nice place to live. When I moved here, I found a Hawthorne group page on Facebook. I asked where there are good things to do go out and do. Many people responded and literally NOBODY said there was anything good in Hawthorne. They said "there's concerts in the park in Hermosa Beach, Gardena has this, Redondo Beach has that, but NOTHING in Hawthorne. Maybe one day someone will bring good things to the city, redesign Hawthorne Blvd and time the traffic signals to make for a better flow of traffic, but until then, I give Hawthorne a big thumbs down. read more

This city should be called the dead city, not the city of friendly neighbors. I grew up in Mar Vista, West Hollywood and Culver City. I bought a house in Hawthorne about four years ago, gated community. Crime seems normal, but you would never know that from driving around here. The businesses and homes are disgusting and dirty. Most of them need to be knocked down completely. It looks super ghetto here. The Westside of Hawthorne is superclean with respectable people. The Eastside of Hawthorne is totally different and ghetto. Young thugs hanging outside dealing drugs in clear day. School ratings are awful! There are no restaurants to eat or places to shop. The Hawthorne Mall was closed down over 10 years ago, due to violent crimes and robberies. That mall has been abandoned this whole time. I believe they're turning it into some sort of space center, finally! Nothing for kids to do either. I have to go to Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach and El Segundo to do any type of activities, shopping, eating or even errands. I believe 70% of the people don't speak English in this city too. I love my house and thank god my kids go to school in El Segundo. Haven't had any problems yet. We got a new Mayor not to long ago and I noticed that a lot of the businesses on Hawthorne strip have been remodeled. Both high schools have been completely rebuilt. So I really hope the new Mayor is going to clean the city up and bring life back to it. Many years ago this was a blue-collar city. It has a lot of history here. It's where all our space stuff is made. Its also located in the center of Los Angeles. This city should be just as good as Manhattan Beach no reason it still kept like this. read more

It's all LA County right?!?! Well this small-ish city borders Lawndale/Torrance/Inglewood/ and Los Angeles. It an ok place with it's share of crime, good eateries etc but one large characteristic that it lost is the "Hawthorne Mall". before other "super" malls sprang up this was the place for my generation to hang out, get a frozen yogurt and go back to school shopping. Also gone is the cute little movie theatre next door...which is where I saw back to the future....ok....I just told my age! 8o/ lol read more
