Last week I ended up unintentionally rupturing a tendon in my non-dominant (thank goodness) hand. As someone who works as a nurse and an online Yelp Community Manager, I am required to use my hands constantly. Dr. Hollstein and his medical assistant Carol were able to fit me into his slammed busy schedule. I conveniently completed the registration paperwork online prior to my appointment. I checked in with Laura at the front desk who is absolutely a doll; welcoming everyone who comes in the door with a smile. While I wait to be brought back to an exam room, Laura and I had a friendly chit-chat. Upon going back to the exam room, Carol was lovely and easy going. Dr. Hollstein followed her and has such an amazing bedside manner and great sense of humor. Between the "eeks" and "ows" of him moving my hand/fingers and going over my medical information, we shared some good laughs. In the end, he ended up needing to immobilize and place a cast on my arm. Fast-forward a week and the first cast was uncomfortable by rubbing on my hand and fingers. Carol was able to get me in the same day to replace the cast with a new, better-fitting one. All in all, I would recommend any of the medical providers in this office when it comes to orthopedics and sports medicine. They truly care!

We tried carefully to find whom to report it to and were referred to Christina whom we were told was HR but then turned out to be the office manager? All very unclear. Regardless, we very specifically requested anonymity and discretion, and instead she was incredibly rude, disrespectful, and simply forwarded it to the doctor himself who was inappropriate, completely against our wishes! It was an abhorrent experience and handled just as abusively on all sides. There is no oversight recourse with these people.

I got a recommendation from my PT to see Dr. Yau, and when I called for an initial appointment, they were able to squeeze me in immediately to check me out! After examining me and my x-rays, Dr. Yau determined that my knee wasn't broken after all, and recommended that I follow a PT regimen in order to speed recovery and minimize atrophy and loss of mobility/flexibility. Thanks to his diagnosis and advice, I got back to 100% and am now back to distance running and my regular workouts with no trace of pain or weakness. Dr. Yau was kind, knowledgeable, and you could tell he wants the best outcome for his patients. I always saw athletes in the waiting room, which is just another indicator that this is the place to go if you are active and want to have the best results.

My first mistake was not looking at all of Dr Pearson's reviews on Yelp and Google. I saw four stars for his Santa Barbara practice and assumed that was good enough. He's a doctor, he knows what he's doing, right? Wrong. I came to Dr Pearson as most, through a referral from my PC Doc via my HMO. He diagnosed me with a Morton's neuroma and told me surgery was the only option. After a few months, I decided to go through with the procedure. He never ordered an MRI or any imaging. The surgery went fine, but my recovery never happened. After 11 months , he finally ordered an MRI. The MRI clearly showed and described a recurring neuroma. Dr Pearson, ignored that and basically told me the pain was in my head. "Pain is pain" were his exact words. No offer to do a follow up surgery or admit he didn't do the procedure correctly. He was very elusive and dismissive in his responses to questions. After a total of 14 appointments over a 2 year period, and a failed surgery, I gave up on this guy and found another doctor. I'm now 6 weeks post Op with Dr Haggerty at Alta Orthopedic. She found the neuroma, removed it and I'm now back to hiking and walking at about 80% and hopeful to make a full recovery. Sorry, Dr Pearson, pain is not always pain. Sometimes pain is caused by the actual problem you diagnosed but failed to resolve. Dr Pearson may be good enough for simple broken ankles and sprangs, but I'd stay far away If you need surgery or have a complicated issue.
