Mount Vernon (M.V.) is a 6 A high school in Fairfax County. Considering the fact that Fairfax…read morecounty consists of the best schools in the state. But it also has its share of bad schools. Unfortunately Mount Vernon is one of them. In the halls of M.V. there is always inappropriate behavior. Whether it's fights, students throwing things, or bad/vulgar language being talked about loudly. As a student I can name multiple times each of those things happening and there are surely more that I am not aware of. The (boys) bathrooms are also horrible and very uncomfortable. There is always sketchy behavior in the bathroom. You can choose any bathroom IN THE ENTIRE SCHOOL and 9 times out of 10 they always reek of the smell of weed. Along with the bathrooms smelling really bad they are also just poorly cleaned. There are puddles of pee on the floor (sometimes poop) and for whatever reasons there is hardly ever toilet paper, soap dispensers, and paper towels. Students also decide that the bathroom is a good place to fight. If that isn't bad enough for you, if you go in the bathroom at the wrong time people take pictures of you while you're using the bathroom. The cafeteria isn't as bad as the hallway and bathrooms but it's not good. School lunch is okay. What is really bad about the cafeteria is that it is a very dirty place. There is food from the last day still on the table and the floors are the equivalent of 7-11 floors. Most students in the cafeteria are out of control and they throw food. The teachers were always very nice people but weren't the best at teaching. (There are some good ones) But they always seemed to give me a hard time when I asked for a simple favor. I felt lost in all of my classes and I am a pretty good student. If I can give this school lower then a 1 star I would

The teachers are truly exceptional and the Head of School does a fantastic job of leading the school in accomplishing its mission. Erick has always been a joy to work with and I've never met an educator so dedicated to supporting our son's success. (Our son just took a week-long "Maymester" course on game theory with him and LOVED it). If you're looking for a school where your child's talents will be nurtured, values will be shaped, independence will be fostered, and community-engaged citizenship will be encouraged, look no further - HGS is the best school around. At HGS, your child will get honest feedback on their work and will gain the confidence needed to be successful both in and out of the classroom beyond high school. (If you have an artistic child, don't be put off by the lack of art classes. Through internships, "Maymester" classes, and electives, our son has been able to develop a solid portfolio to use in applying for film schools next year). If you're considering HGS but aren't sure if it's the right fit for your child, tour the school and see what you think. Erick and Lizzy (Admissions) can connect you with parents who can talk to you about their experiences. Tell them you'd like to talk to the mom of the rising senior who's planning to go to film school - they'll know who you're talking about and will give you my contact info. Happy to talk with you about how fantastic HGS is! :) Kim
