That's right, my 5 year old was obsessed with the round-the-clock hurricane watches over the Caribbean, Oklahoma tornadoes, and blizzards in Wyoming. When we set up the channels on the converter box, we discovered qubo (small q), a kids channel not offered by our satellite service. Personally, I've opposed the idea of him watching the trashy, immature humor offered on stations like Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network or the mass-marketed Saturday morning junk. Sorry SpongeBob, you're part of the problem. Qubo is a subchannel of ION Media Network, partnering with NBC, Scholastic and other seemingly reputable groups, putting forth programming that if not entirely educational, it's mostly well-crafted and I don't mind him watching. It can compete with PBS Kids, as I think it is a step up from Noggin, which mainly targets a preschool audience. Qubo doesn't flood the shows with cereal and toy marketing. While it runs ads every 15 minutes, the ads are targeted mainly towards adults: weight loss plans, greatest hits of the 90s on CD, closet organizers and "amazing" as-seen-on-TV appliances ("but there's more!") My son tunes out for most of those. Some of the shows are imported from other countries: Postman Pat (UK), Gofrette (French Canadian), Pecola (Japanese), Jane and the Dragon (Canada/New Zealand's WETA - The people who did Lord of the Rings graphics). There's even a classic old staple like Lamb Chop's Play-along. While not completely educational, I can vouch for all these programs being reputable, showing good "growing up" stories that demonstrate values and doing the right thing. The animation varies from still-frame claymation (Dragon) to computer generated like Pecola, or the storybook natural highlight color tones of "Jane and the Dragon". And my wife and I do sing along to the "Jane and the Dragon" opening theme song too. Another favorite show is "The Adventures From The Book of Virtues" which features Native American themes and a talking buffalo telling stories, cleverly introducing kids to important historical figures like Abraham Lincoln, Helen Keller, or others with noteworthy accomplishments or renowned for their good deeds. Only downside to qubo is that it's a 24-hour network, which means our bedtime routine has to be sync-ed up with the ending of a specific show each day, before the next one begins.

The self-proclaimed "Worldwide Leader in Sports" is indispensable if you're into March Madness or…read morethe NHL but there are clouds on the horizon as their Disney owners are choking on billions of dollars in rights fees (NFL, NBA and MLB) that dwindling cable subscription carriage fees and declining ad revenues are straining to support. Not that anyone should rush to sponsor a telethon for this cash cow but their days of being a highly paid staple in cable lineups are drawing to a close. Soon they may be jettisoned by Disney meaning you'll finally be able to stream the full spectrum of ESPN networks without a cable bundle and for many, that will be the final snip in the cable cord. As an avid sports fan I find most of their coverage a hypertensive, over-the-top, scream-a-thon somehow believing the louder they shriek (or the hotter their take) the more you'll stay glued to the set. And let's not even talk about SportsCenter whose highlight reel has taught almost three generations of athletes to preen and posture for the camera honing their catchphrases. On balance, Hockey and the NFL are reasonable but as a baseball fan their weekly games are best experienced on mute. As for the NBA, their coverage (along with ABC) has been a lost cause for quite some time. It's hard to believe that their first program way back in 1979 was log rolling financed through credit card cash advances by Bill Rasmussen who founded the network. I have a feeling he has paid off his credit cards. Five stars just for the balz it took to do it.

The bilingual reviews offer nuggets of "behind the scenes" looks at how restaurant meals are prepared -- and suggestions for obscure menu options not well known to Westerners. I find that there is something primal about such raw authenticity. Watch out Anthony Bourdain! These millennial broadcasters may not have as much attitude as you do -- but they are every bit as genuine and knowledgeable! Not to take anything away from Yelp -- which often steers me right -- but watching what amounts to a master class on Chinese cookery gives me a much better feel for the bonafides of a restaurant. How many shows is this twit going to get? She's like the Rachael Ray of NY 1. She looks like Carrie-Anne Moss in the black raincoat already. And can someone tell her to wear less makeup and eat something?? I wish it were a longer program. 9.99. The hosts spend a day for 9.99. Its awesome, with themes abound and they cover a lot of ground, like Cool in Your Code. Eat Out New York. Not the most in-depth food show, but its just as fun as the lesser shows on Food Network, and its useful for New Yorkers of course. Its all about being applicable. Backdrop NYC. A must for short film lovers. All the films are by New York Filmmakers, set in or near New York. Great. New York Noise. to hell with all the so called music channels, I understand their need to have a more consistent viewership regarding programs that feature a continuing story beyond a 3 minute music video, but this is the program you need to watch if you like indie rock.
