It now provides an enjoyable afternoon or morning out, and is great for children (of all ages!) and families. A latecomer to the railways in Britain, the line was built to the narrow gauge of 2'6" and with sharp curves and gradients to reduce costs. It was operated first bu the Cambrian Railway, which in turn was absorbed into the Great Western Railway in 1923. None of this ever helped the finances of the company, which were troubled from the start. Passenger services ceased in 1931; despite surges in the two world wars, freight services stopped in 1956. The line was saved and reopened from Llanfair Caereinion by enthusiasts in 1963, reaching Welshpool in 1981. The line through the centre of Welshpool was abandoned at the behest of the local authorities in the 1960s, so the present terminus is on the southern edge of the town at Raven Square. The line retains it's original two locomotives, the Earl and Countess, and over the years has added various locomotives from lines around the world. It has also had to a acquire carriages from other railways, so that the rolling stock is now truly international. The route is rural and very scenic, with a round trip taking around two hours. There are car parks at both Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion, and the latter has a good cafe and small but decent railway bookshop. The website has details of train services through the year. Most of the carriages have steep steps - some can be accessed by wheelchair lifts at Welshpool and at Llanfair; it's best to call ahead to enquire about specific needs.

Upstairs is for the dentist, and midwife/health visitors. The whole place is really clean and spacious, and there is so much more room to cater for draytons ever growing population, right outside is a chemist which makes it easier for people to collect prescriptions as soon as they have been to the doctors.
