Public speaking that early in the morning is not for me. Well, last December (2012) I stumbled across a listing for all Santa Cruz County Toastmasters on the Internet. There on that list I saw "EVENING TOASTMASTERS". WOW! I was shocked! Monday evenings at 6:30? I could do that! I attended my first meeting as a guest in mid January (2013). The meeting place was easy to find, right there on Capitola Rd. near 17th Ave at the Live Oak Senior Center. Park in their parking lot. Walk a few steps to the meeting room. I actually met an old friend there at that meeting whom I had been out of touch with for a few years. Nice. I attended my first three meetings as a guest (free, yea). No pressure to join. After three meetings I decided to ante up and pay their very reasonable dues. I'm not saying how much because I think it changes from time to time. That group of very nice people made me feel like we had been friends for years. They made an effort to remember my name, (or read my name tag) and asked me questions about myself. They "encouraged" me, no pressure, to participate in small ways. I can still remember the first time I stood up at the podium and answered a simple question in a one minute exercise. I could not make much sense, I was so self conscious. But, nobody laughed! They applauded! I couldn't believe it. Applause? Wow. Okay, well what will they do if I actually give an intelligent presentation? Will I get a standing ovation?? Will they throw flower bouquets? A few days after I joined (paid my dues) I received a large envelope in the mail from Toastmasters Headquarters. There was my Welcome Packet in my hands. There were two manuals, a copy of their most recent monthly magazine, a welcome letter from the president, and a really good feeling that I had made a good decision to become a member. Well, it's September 2013 and I have missed only one Monday Evening Meeting since then. I have been giving about one 5 minute speech per month, but because of how the meetings are structured, I and most everyone gets to get up and say something at every meeting. My favorite exercise is called "Table Topics". A member is named the Table Topics Master at each meeting. This member gives a short 2 - 3 minute speech on that evening's topic, "Failure" for instance. Then the Master calls on several members to come up and answer a prepared question on the same topic for one to two minutes. Very challenging. Guests can be called on but they may also decline with full honors. This was the same exercise that got me up there that very first time. I blew it! They applauded! I felt pretty good. Since February (2012) I have won nearly a dozen "Blue Ribbons" for speeches and other "friendly competitive" exercises I have participated in. The recognition I have received pushes me forward. My inner entertainer is emerging. My communication skills are sharpened. And... BONUS! In addition to improving my speaking skills, the Toastmasters program has also helped me to become a better listener. How? Well, one of the fun things we get to do is "Evaluations"! Evaluations are the club's internal feedback mechanism. We evaluate each others' speeches! It's so fun! There ARE rules, of course. Evaluations have to be MOSTLY positive. The one thing that we can be tough on is OVERTIME speeches. I'll bet that every club has at least two members who can't stop talking. We have two. They get the "Bell" (we're not allowed to use the hook anymore) almost every speech they give. Do you think that I am one? Maybe. Come to a meeting and find out! Hehe! In short, Toatmasters is COOL!

My daughter truly enjoys the class and intends to turn her room into an art studio. Tami, the owner, is a wonderful art teacher and truly great with kids. Tami made the painting of the unicorn easy that every girl enjoyed the event and they were proud of their artwork. I highly recommend planning your next party with Tami. She made the party planning stress feel, and my daughter loved picking out what her friends would paint. The space of the studio was perfect and so cute with twinkle-lights and artwork all over. This place is such a gem for Gilroy! My daughter looks forward to going again to paint just for fun on one of studio's themed painting afternoons.
