I called to inquire about the availability of a book I wanted. After a brief hold I was told the book was available and could be held for my husband to pick up that afternoon. The book was in pristine condition and reasonably priced. I will definitely purchase from them again! I hope soon to have an afternoon to browse in the shop in person. read more

LOVE this place! Always find so many wonderful and unusual antique books here (which I buy for their fascinating content, I'm not a collector). It does take a minute to get oriented--don't panic!--but as you get acclimated to your surroundings, you'll realize that this shop is incredibly well organized for this style of used bookshop. My esoteric tastes aside, they also have new publisher's overstocks, and great paperback and hardback fiction and mystery sections that not only had several of the titles on my Amazon list, but incredibly, beat Amazon prices (plus a WIN for the environment...no unnecessary shipping and packaging waste...and duh, you leave w the book right away.). This place is an absolute gem! It has an antique feel that makes you want to spend the whole day there. The selection is wonderful--several obscure genres but also your standard large fiction section. The prices are a steal--cheaper than Amazon and you'd be supporting a local small business. This is my fav bookstore in Virginia. It's old and waaaaay funky. Room after room of new and used books. The floors squeak. The signs are handmade. Disorder brings order to the experience. The staff knows where everything is. I stop here every time I'm in C'Ville and always find something good. This is the kind of bookstore that will soon be gone forever. Maybe not Heartwood...but the genre. You must stop here. Buy something and enjoy it. Prices are beyond reasonable. Go often, you never know what you'll find, seems they get loads of previously owned books all the time...boxes of them are cued up to unpack. A complete analog experience. read more

When my daughter and I shopped there in 2016, we happened upon unique finds that were serendipitously connected to us. One was a book about the church that I grew up in Huntington, WV. I already owned one, but I had to have that one, too! My daughter was also drawn to a leather maroon binding that turned out to be a yearbook: 1943 Woodberry Forest to be precise. Which is when my father attended. Pics of him and several of his friends are peppered throughout it! I also bought a copy of Majestic Middle Tennessee because it has a lengthy genealogy that's handwritten on the flyleaf from a mother to her daughter. My hope was to return it to the family -- a project that I'm just getting to. Today I learned that the daughter lived in a Vassar dorm called Cushing in 1960. That's the dorm that my daughter lived in when she attended Vassar! When we checked out at the cash register, the wonderful employees were intrigued by our finds. I wish I'd known enough back then to share the Tennessee story, too. We are always attracted to bookstores, but this one has a special je ne sais quoi that will draw me again any time I'm in Charlottesville. Check it out! this is a great used book store! half off fiction paperback books and plenty of interesting coffee table books on display. well organized and easy to get lost in a corner for a while browsing. i kinda pretended i was belle from beauty and the beast as i was cruising through. ill borrow..... this one! but youve already read it three times! it's my favorite! far off places... if you like it that much, it's yours. but sir! that's the best my childhood memory can serve me but it is quite a charming old store, which adds to the classic cozy feel of this neighborhood. this was a necessary pit stop on my visit to charlottesville, because i am HATING the time travelers wife, which is my current read. i was able to find 2 things that had been suggested to me, and one more that just looked like it must be read. read more
