Proceed with caution. The specific arborist I had was not good. (1) He did not properly advise me that construction on my neighbor's property could harm my tree. (2) He did not note early signs of decline because of the construction. (3) I called out a potentially problematic 30' branch on said tree & he said it did not need trimmed. It fell a week later. Had we been in the yard when it fell, someone would've been killed. His response..."well I guess gravity took over". That's when I was done with Heartwood. I always got the feeling they only cared about squeezing in as many visits in a day they could and never took the time to thoroughly inspect/treat the trees. Now I have to remove the tree (which shades 1/2 of my yard) at a cost of 5K. This all could have been avoided had Heartwood (and anther tree company I'll review as well) had simply done their jobs properly. read more

Although they sent a technician to our house, I've yet to receive a quote on the technician's suggested course of action, which he (and the lady who answered the phone) said I'd receive within a day or so. It's been over a week and I've yet to receive any follow-up from this company. In fact I've called them twice and they still haven't responded. Heartwood Tree Service has been our go-to tree service for 20+ years. We had three 100+ year old willow oaks on our property. We are big tree huggers in our house-hold and it was a very sad day today when we had to have the last of these three mammoth creatures cut down after years care, feeding, and periodic crowning. Heartwood tree climbers have always taken great care to do whatever the could to keep our trees healthy. So, when the time came to finally say goodbye (after several major limbs dropped off the last tree this summer on extremely calm days), we knew that Heartwood would be the company to do the job. Hello I recently had tree trimming service performed by Heartwood Tree Care. I was under the impression the people were experts but I found after the job was completed that common sense trimming was not performed. There were two low hanging branches that extended into my neighbor's yard and hung over where they park. The team left them hanging and I am really disappointed. When I contacted Heartwood they sent the Aborists I worked with me and he stated since I didn't specifically ask to remove those branches their team didn't do it. I was unaware that I was supposed micro-manage the project. I mistakenly thought that experts would have the common sense to remove branches that protruded into a neighboring yard. Heartwood did say they would come back and remove for additional fee. I had already paid 3 times the cost of my second highest bid so I am very disappointed in their response. Just beaware if you hire these "experts" for tree trimming you will need to micro-manage their work. read more

Set up an appointment to have an arborist come look at my trees. The sales person assigned to my area was unavailable for a few weeks, but I still decided to meet with him. When Scott arrived, we talked about what I was looking for and what could be done. Scott seemed to be knowledgeable and assured me my trees were all healthy. We discussed the trees that needed pruning. He told me that there was a lead time of about 3 weeks if we wanted to move forward. Scott sent me an estimate a day or two later. I reached out to Scott via email and text to confirm something and ask a few questions but he was unresponsive. About a week or so later he finally responded. When I tried to schedule the work to be done, he was unresponsive again. I wanted to schedule the work to be done about 5-6 weeks in advance. This would ensure I got the day that worked best for me, but Scott didn't bother to return my messages. I felt that was unprofessional, disrespectful, and lacked common courtesy. Scott seemed to indicate that neither he or Heartwood Tree Services wants my money or business. Perhaps, the commission wasn't worth his time. Fortunately, they aren't the only gig in town, so I will patronize someone who wants and values my business. The lack of service and follow through at Heartwood Tree Services is disappointing. read more

The crew that trimmed our tree were courteous and efficient, and very considerate of the surrounding area. (And they humorously related their encounter with a surprised raccoon still living in the tree.) All we spoke with were good communicators. This review is long overdo, but I've used Heartwood twice, and a different crew worked on each job. Professionalism is the exact word to use regarding both crews, and the company overall. I had three different companies give me quotes - well, I attempted to get three quotes, but Heartwood was the only one of the three who would tackle the leaning trees in the back corner of my yard. It was right after a strong wind storm, and one was about to topple onto the neighbors shed. Because of a fence and being surrounded by other trees, no equipment could be used back there, so they had to climb it and cut it in sections. The other companies wouldn't even quote it and didn't seem interested in removing it, but Heartwood acted like it was no big deal. The second time was to cut some large pines that were pushing into my deck. Each job was quoted hourly, and the second job they sent enough guys to do it all in one day. I'm sure it was in part to avoid coming back the next day, but it was also a considerate service to me because I couldn't be inside the house during the ongoing work because there was a danger of very large trees potentially falling. Judging by how good the crew was, I doubt that was a risk, but in the tree business, it always has to be safety first. And for a crew working by the hour, the guys (and gal) moved very quickly, but very safely from what I observed. The first crew did, too, and I never saw any of them without their required safety gear. And in regards to safety, I work in the insurance industry - mainly in workers comp. And tree-removal companies pay some of the highest (maybe THE highest) worker's compensation rates in the industry due to the nature of the work. And the general liability rates are high, too, due to the potential damage trees can cause. And their auto and heavy equipment coverage is very high, too, considering they could have a couple hundred thousand dollars of trucks and equipment at several jobs throughout the city. So yes, tree-removal is expensive. And if it's not, there's a reason, and it's probably not a good one, as without the proper coverage or high enough limits, a homeowner could potentially be on the hook for any injury or damage from the job. So, when you get your bill, know that probably half - if not more - is going right to the insurance company. And the other half needs to cover the cost of the heavy, expensive equipment, and the fuel, and the workers' wages and the overhead and everything else required to run the business. I think the only way to make a tree-removal business profitable is to do many, many jobs very, very well (and safely) over a long period of time. I spent (I think) about $6,0000 total for both jobs, and they cut down several very large trees, trimmed limbs on several more, and manually cut down two that the other companies wouldn't do. And one final note. When I made the appointment, I was told there was a charge to have them come out, which is totally fair (and I believe it is then applied toward the bill if you have them do the work). I can't remember the amount - it was small, I believe, but when I tried to pay it (I wish I remembered the arborist's name, and I did for the longest time, but it's been too long now), he said, "The opportunity to come out here and potentially earn your business is worth more to me than that fee," and he wouldn't take the money. Conversely, the arborist for one of the other companies told me in regards to the leaning trees in the back that I should "find a company with insurance that uses a bunch of Mexicans" to get the job done. Whatever that even means; and how do you even go about doing that? Again, the word I keep coming back to is professional. And everyone from the crews to the office folks at Heartwood is exactly that. And they even cleaned up so well you wouldn't even know I had those trees to start the day, as aside from the smell of freshly cut pine, they left nothing behind. I used heartwood tree service a couple of times. First time was in a storm when a tree fell into my pool. Heartwood tree company was able to come out the very next day. I also had some HUGE trees cut down and Heartwood came out with a monster truck, cut the tree at the bottom and pulled the entire tree up, out and into the mulcher. It was fascinating to watch. The joy of home ownership strikes again. Tree branches. Definitely not a sexy home purchase, but necessary upkeep in Charlotte. I've used Heartwood twice in the past 4 years. As my neighbors tell me, they are the most expensive service. They are pricey, but to my neighbor's surprise, this last visit's quote was not the most expensive. I don't mind paying a fair price for quality service that gives me piece of mind. I appreciated their customer service. The arborist that came and helped me understand what is necessary and what is something to think about for the future. Not all the branches needed trimming, but the ones that did and were considered dangerous, they fit me into their schedule and within a week they were taken care of. Had someone come out, and they seemed very knowledgeable. We decided to get some work done. We got a quote that we felt was high. We emailed back and asked what the cost would be for part of the service. After a week of no reply, we finally got one. We then let them know that we had already taken care of part of the project and asked if they could just do the treatment. We heard nothing back, and then someone showed up early one morning, woke everyone up. They spoke to my wife who was unaware of our email communications, and proceeded to engage the equipment to do the entire original service. I jumped out of bed half asleep and showed them my email communication. The person said they were sorry and that their salesperson does this all the time. Job was performed adequately -- cleaning up a few trees and taking down some smaller ones; however, the crew broke our 6 month old driveway and also do not communicate well when they are going to show up at your house. A few times someone showed up at our house and I had repeat myself that I would call to confirm a time that works for us. It was a intrusive. Isn't it standard to call people before you show up at their house at 8 AM? They ended up fixing it but it was a huge inconvenience. We could only park one car on the driveway and I had to take a cab to work for 10 days. In addition, Owner demanded full payment of the job ($2500) even though we had extra expenses and had to invest a considerable amount of time. Although I had originally posted a good review, I found out later I was naïve as a first time homeowner looking for tree canopy maintenance. When it was all over, I was disappointed about the price, thoroughness, and overall service. In my opinion, the arborist does not take into consideration the customer's long term goals. Instead, he has tunnel vision looking only to come up with ways to facilitate more work and expense. I spent a $1000 up front on a set of trees that we ultimately decided, six months later, needed to be cut down and replaced. The estimate for taking them out was also over $1000 more than the competition. As I told him, I would have much rather invested the original money into taking them out if I knew I was going to have to eventually do that anyways. I encourage anyone reading this to get a second opinion before pursuing big jobs. I remain upset considering I recommended the company to both my neighbors. After they overcharged them as well, all of us will be going with a different company in the future. I will not recommend them to anyone looking for tree service in the future. I am guessing the company has increased too much in size and lost good customer service in the process. read more

Heartwood Tree Service Asheville just did two full days of superb work for us. Our job was quite challenging: the removal of two very large White Oaks, one dead and the other dying, on a narrow Asheville street between closely packed houses. Concerned about the safety of property and people during the process, and the financial cost, we spoke with six tree service companies before selecting Heartwood. Heartwood's Mastor Arborist Tommy Masters was patient, knowledgeable, and stayed in very good contact with us from our first call to him to the completion of the job. He also quoted a very fair price. The strategy Tommy proposed -- using a large crane despite the narrowness of the street and the low-hanging (but, as it turned out, readily disconnected and reconnected) electrical and cable wires, gave Yona and the rest of the Heartwood crew secure control over the entire dismantling process. (Another certified arborist at a different company had recommended a much smaller crane that would have had a much harder and less safe time reaching the tops of the huge oaks, one of which was already rotting at its base.) Tommy arranged for all the permits, made sure the wires were detached and re-attached timely, and advised us as to what and when to communicate to our neighbors. Meanwhile, during the job itself, Yona and the rest of the crew were highly skilled and professional throughout. They skillfully cut giant chunks of tree, which were then transported securely by the crane, and the crew cleaned up the logs and debris on the street and site so thoroughly at the end of each day, it would have been impossible to know afterward that any tree work had just been completed. Also, the stumps that were left were about as expertly minimized as we could ever have hoped for, one of them blending into the sloping landscape, the other just the right height in the front yard for us to place something upon it. We cannot give a more heartfelt recommendation than this one for Tommy, Yona, and the entire Heartwood Asheville crew for a difficult job, safely, respectfully, and expertly executed. read more

Heartwood Tree Service (lived up to their already high ranking in every respect. The owner himself (Patrick) responded to my request for an estimate (I intended to get more estimates but after his visit decided to accept his on the spot.) An arborist himself, Patrick identified and referred to our trees and bushes by name, making several useful suggestions as to where and how cut or prune half a dozen trees for added protection of our roof, to provide additional light to overly shaded younger trees, and to improve the view from our home. He even offered to take some samples of apparently diseased trees back with him for analysis and diagnosis. A few days later--in fact a day earlier than tentatively agreed--a smartly uniformed and helmeted crew of three tackled our fairly extensive scope of work. They completed in about 2 1/2 hours at the agreed upon reasonable cost. Yes, it's expensive, but all tree work seems to be ( I should have saved my 8 years of college and graduate school and learned how to be a tree person!). And these guys are insured and have workman's comp so you won't get sued if someone gets hurt on your property. That COULD be worth a lot!
