The museum covers every war since the Revolutionary War up through our service in Iraq and Afghanistan and highlights Indiana's involvement in those conflicts. The displays are incredible. There are vehicles, aircraft, and countless artifacts from the wars on display. You will truly develop a greater appreciation for the sacrifice and honor displayed in the defense of freedom around the world. I highly recommend the Indiana War Memorial!

My visit to the home of President Benjamin Harrison has been an unexpected highlight of my Indiana…read moreventures. We visited on a recent Saturday morning without reservations. Tickets can be purchased on line and receive a $2 discount (of $16 admission). Full price tickets can be purchased in the Welcome Center behind the Harrison home. Discounts are available for seniors and military. There is a brief film and a few artifacts in the Welcome Center along with a gift shop. We were able to join the first tour of the day, which only had three people including us. The docent-led tours start at 10:00 and run throughout the day. Gary, started our tour with a brief introduction and handed us off to docent Don S. at the front door of the Italianate Victorian home built in 1875. The beautifully restored home holds much of the original Harrison furniture. Don described the Harrison family dynamics, the history of the furniture and aspects of presidential life. We walked through rooms on three floors filled with artifacts and some of Mrs. Harrison's personal artwork. I could easily imagine the family at home during the tour. The third floor former ballroom, contains the Presidential Library (opened by appointment only, but visible to visitors). Other artifacts are also on display there. The 75 minute tour seemed to fly by as Don relayed interesting stories and anecdotes about the home and family. There is a dedicated free parking lot on the northside of the house or street parking is available. Elevators in the home are available for those who cannot climb the narrow stairs. The tour is not suitable for young children or strollers. Totally a must see for history, government and architecture buffs. The Harrison home is an Indiana treasure.

The Hendricks County Museum is amazing. The Museum was once the County jail and home of the local…read moresheriff. We were given a fabulous personal and guided tour of the museum by Judy W., who is a volunteer at the museum. Judy is knowledgable and passionate about the history of Hendricks County. She was engaging throughout the tour. On our tour, we saw special exhibits of Hendricks County artifacts. We visited the original jail cells! Prisoners were held in the home where the sheriff and his family lived. We toured the entire house, which is filled with antiques and vintage items that would have been consistent with the age of the residence. The Victorian home has been remarkably restored and maintained. There was a room filled with war artifacts dating back to the Civil War. There was another room filled with information and artifacts from Normal College, which closed many years ago. The tour was free, but donations are accepted that help care for the home. There were many stairs, so I'm not sure that the tour is totally accessible. There is street parking available. The tour is suitable for school age children and adults. Plan about 45 minutes for the tour. The hours are limited, so call ahead to ensure they are open. I highly recommend a visit if you like local history.

Home to the former Sheriff, it's been preserved as it was in its prime, complete with the in-home JAIL CELLS that held the town's prisoners under the same roof as the sheriff's children. Ask about the prisoner escapes - there's some great stories there. Seeing old-fashioned kid's bedrooms, a beautiful kitchen, huge staircase, and Civil War memorabilia galore, this spot offered way more than I would've guessed. This is a nice family event, just outside of Indianapolis. They normally hold it at Anson Acres…read morePark, annually, over a weekend in late April/ early May. It has tons of space and has a nice set up. Tickets are $5 per person, with kids 2 and under free. Tickets can be purchased on line or at the gate with cash or card. Parking here is easy, but you may have to walk a bit to get to the gate. I had about a half to quarter mile walk. They have inflatables available for the littles to play, but they were uncomfortably packed. My littles still had a good time playing on them though. The festival is full of food and drink vendors as well as merchandise vendors. You can purchase live action role play (LARP) swords, horns, furs, cups, soap, honey, turkey legs, root beer, lemon or strawberry shake-ups, burgers and fries. There is a stage where they have a Celtic band playing as well as other acts like belly dancers and speakers. They also have a ring in the center of the field where they host LARP battles, next to the field is a fire that was pretty much blowing annoying smoke while I was there. Near the food vendors and to the side of the stage, there are picnic tables under a shelter and tall tables placed in the open field. There are a few spaces that are designated for kids to learn how to sword fight with the LARP swords and learn how to use them. A little walk from the vendors and demo area is what they call Viking village. I think the role players actually live there over the weekend. The have a falcon and hawk handler back there and you will see them doing stuff like actually making dinner and marching to the LARP arena on the other side of the park. The park has a restroom facility, but the organizers have also added some port-a-pottys around the park for visitors. It was a good number because I did not have to wait to use them. For those of you that ate your Wheaties, the organizers host a keg throwing contest for kids, women and men. They use different sizes for different groups with the kids throwing a skillet and the men throwing a full size keg. There is also opportunities for adults to participate in archery and axe throwing. If you do visit, I will recommend a couple of things. First, get there early. You will get a better parking spot and have less of a crowd. Second bring one of those bag chairs. Seating here is limited and goes very quickly. Also, there are refills available on the shake-ups that you can get for almost half the price of the original purchase. Make sure to get your money's worth. Lastly, be aware that the merchandise you can be here is nice, but can be very expensive. I spent almost a $100 for a horn cup with a belt holster for one of my littles. This was a nice day and something different for my littles and I to do. The littles and I stayed here most of the day and the only thing that got us to leave was that they had to shut down due to lightning strikes nearby. I highly recommend checking out this event. At $5 per person, with free parking, it is a deal. You will definitely have lots of fun here. I cannot wait until next year.

I had the chance to explore this place while traveling to the area and it was really interesting to learn about the history of medicine and medical research that took place in the early 20th century. I love how everything in the museum is exactly the same as it was back in the 1940s so I felt like I was able to get a taste of what really happened back then. The tour guide was knowledgeable about all of the various rooms, equipment, and displays. I took a self-guided tour of their medicinal garden on the side of the building and it was really cool to learn about the ways that these herbs have been and are currently being used for holistic treatments.

The Montgomery County Fair hasn't changed much over the years. The events are centered around 4-H…read moreand open competitions. I like that you won't spend a lot of money to visit. Admission and parking are free. Young bulls were being judged in the arena when we arrived on day 4 of the Fair. There's a salt-of-the-earth feel to the show. Two buildings held judged prepared food items, home arts, 4-H poster exhibits and more. There were photos of homemade pies that made me wish I had been a judge. The barns were filled with cows, swine, chickens and other farm animals, each anxious to capture the coveted grand champion ribbon. Owners were proudly grooming their cows. Of course, there's fair food. About a dozen local food trucks filled the parking lot selling elephant ears, smash burgers, Hawaiian ice and more. The 4-H was selling rib eyes and hamburgers in the Beef food stand. We had a hamburger dinner (came with two sides and a beverage) for $9. An artisan was demonstrating wood carving near an entrance. I didn't see kitschy carnival rides. The walkways are not paved, so wheel chair access may be challenging in some areas. This fair offers a classic taste of Indiana.

Shannon Family Farms does many things, but one of the things they're best at is raising pigs! My…read morehusband and I love the pork we've had from SFF. They have a wide variety of cuts -- delicious bacon included, of course! But one of my favorites is their ground sausage seasoned with sage ("sweet and sassy sage" to be precise!) They're also in the process of starting a cut flower garden -- so exciting! They sell their pork at Four Seasons Local Market (open Thursday-Saturday) but you can also order directly through them.
