The staff not only take an unfathomable amount of pride in their work, but are friendly, professional, and entirely accommodating of just about any reasonable request. One of their star employees, Dave, has always made me feel as though I am not just a guest, but am visiting my second home. And I imagine that I'm not alone when I say that after the first visit and meeting with the owners, Jesse and Chris, that I felt as though I'd gained two new best friends. Talented, whip smart, and cool, they are the perfect proprietors of such a place. Island life can be tricky, teetering between too hippie and too stuffy, but they've found a real balance by being themselves, and the property at Bodega reflects this. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fireplace, and a fully equipped kitchen in each of the seven cabins, this is not what I'd consider roughing it by any stretch of the imagination. A classic log cabin inside and out, the modern touches are what make it cool. Plush leather couches, filament bulb lamps, Pendleton blankets, reclaimed Douglas Fir tables--the could-be twee aspect of cabin life is exonerated by sensible design. There's even a flat screen TV in each cabin with a small library of movies in the main lodge to choose from, but I wouldn't bother--there's so much to see and do at or nearby Bodega Ridge. Spectacular meadows, forests, and wildflowers surrounding the property, Bodega is positioned so that it's almost always bright and sunny. The staggeringly beautiful trails along the ridge offer one of the best views of the gulf islands, and the ocean is close enough to walk to in a matter of minutes. Also, bonus: the weirdly infamous Stoneworld (as seen here: http://www.hellobc.com/british-columbia/blog/january-2011/stoneworld-on-galiano-island.aspx) is a worthy stop on the way to a serious magical forest hike. Free wifi throughout the property, an amazing main lodge that can accommodate up to 70 dinner guests, and wonderfully knowledgeable proprietors who will have a recommendation for just about anything--all a quick boat ride from Vancouver. I don't know that I have the words to describe just how amazing Bodega Ridge is. Bringing the city to the island, staying rustic and real, this place has it all. **of note: Bodega is located about a 40 minute drive, or a few leisurely hours by bike from the ferry. He was happy to take pictures for us and he was also very knowledgable of the area and it's history. He was an fabulous tour guide and professional pilot. After looking for options I decided to give West Coast Helicopters (WCH) a call to see if their services would be an option. If a trip were to be had it would be out of Nanaimo. I was directed to contact Andy Hatfield; pilot and operations manager for the WCH Nanaimo office. After contacting Andy; I knew that I had the RIGHT person to look after our needs. Working with Andy we put together a fabulous flight plan that included 3 stops. Andy was patient, understanding, professional and above all else displayed a willingness to provide a trip that would make a "LIFETIME" day. My family and I talked about our day once the flight was over. The four of us scored the day as a PERFECT 10 out of 10. We had perfect weather and WCH provided us with the perfect helicopter and pilot. If there are others who want to experience a "LifeDay" give WCH a call. They can provide you the adventure.

The date that they were in town worked, liked their work, they were approachable at first. A day later they wanted to meet at almost midnight my time and when I said that wasn't going to work because I had to get up in the morning. They said fine maybe Friday at 1pm. I said i would check my work schedule and they said that was fine. The next morning, i got a series of snarky text messages including one saying they reserve the right to refuse a shoot. So I had been set on them but they were so moody, i figured that I better keep my options open. So i contacted some other photographers where I out lined the pictures I was looking for. So i forwarded the email so that we were all on the same page about what I was looking for. They sent me a long email ending with but if you like our work, we would be happy to do the shoot that day just get back to us Tuesday about times you would like to meet. So I wrote the date they were available and committed to $400 in renovations to the room I wanted to use, bought new curtains that let the light in, white bedding and and accent chair because they don't have a studio here. Tuesday I messaged them with all the times we could meet and even traded one of my shifts to accommodate Friday at 1pm which they had originally quoted. Half way through the day, I get a text message saying they didn't think it would work out because of something I'd said in the email (which was totally misinterpreted) but they didn't take the time to clarify, just made a knee jerk decision based on something that wasn't even relevant to them. So now I'm out $1000 and they cancelled because of a misunderstanding in their reading comprehension. From were I'm standing they look like to use-to-be good photographers that don't want to work or take their clients needs into consideration and pick apart every communication so that things don't work out instead of working with their client. They are so whimsical that they promote themselves, make a verbal agreement and then take the choice away from the client without meeting them. If clients are desperate enough for a photographer that puts their clients needs second and cancel without warning leaving you stuck with a bill for venu, then you should pick these two.
