Just don't do it. They messed up Brunswick stew. It was $5 for the small. It is flavorless and smells horrible. Would not recommend even for a cat. Services was quick and lady was nice. First, I am surprised that I haven't reviewed this place before. Second, I am absolutely amazed it has quite a few low ratings. I have no idea who these people are who give low ratings, but I can say they are all insane. LOL Seriously, this is one of the best BBQ places in Georgia. I have to admit that I am extremely critical of any BBQ place and Georgia has some of the worst in the South. This may be the best Georgia BBQ place I have ever tried and I have tried a lot of them. Not sure what the deal is as great BBQ seems to stop at the Savannah River on the South Carolina side of the state. As an aside, the hands down best BBQ in the country is in SC and NC. For decades now, when I drive I20 through Crawfordville and Heavey's is open, I stop and get BBQ to go. Occasionally, I will eat inside. Last time I did that was with my son and grandson on the way to a Braves game. They loved it. They have an incredible atmosphere inside, plus the giant rocking chair by the front door and antique vehicles outside that you can take a look at. Inside is antiques and super cool artifacts of the South, including animal heads on the walls and all kinds of antique items. It is worth it just for the atmosphere. But, the food rocks, as well. That is why I don't get the low reviews. I am a pulled pork guy and that is how I compare Southern BBQ. In Texas, I try the brisket, as things are different out there. Pulled pork, hash, and sides are what I go for and everything I have ever gotten from here was good. Perhaps their selection is not quite as much as some other places, but with BBQ, you are really going for pulled pork and ribs. Their hash (and rice) is outstanding and their pulled pork is so good it doesn't need sauce. But they have a few choices of sauces, including the disgusting Kansas City/Texas/Memphis sweet stuff. But also they have the thin vinegar/ketchup SC/NC sauce. I think they even offer the middle SC mustard based sauce. Mac and cheese and greens are both good. They have a few others, but those are my go too. I hit this page today because I was checking to see if maybe they were open on Thursday. They are not, only Fri-Sun. All the best BBQ joints are only open three to at most four days a week. My trip to Watkinsville on Thursday will, unfortunately, not be one where I stop at Heavy's for a quart of Pulled pork and a couple of sides to take home. My loss. I love Heavy's. The people are friendly, as well. These low scores confuse me and almost makes me think something is going on. read more

The outside of the establishment with the vehicles is well kept. It looks kind of odd due to the fact they are scarecrows. When you walk into the location it wasn't well maintained and the staff wasn't welcoming. The location is famous for the movie Sweet Home Alabama and you'll notice old pictures of the location in the film. I and my fiancé were not sure how and if the food was cooked. The refrigerator looked disgusting and not well maintained and there were layers of dust and grime in this location. I've read previous reviews stating that this was some of the best barbecues in Georgia and I can say this food was not good at all. The pulled pork sandwich I had was simply warmed meat on a piece of bread and dry. I asked for french fries and was brought the most random box of ketchup that seem that hasn't been used in years. My fiancé felt uncomfortable and disgusted by the location of the food and it looked unsanitary. This place was amazing! Probably the coolest little BBQ joint I've ever been too. Old and Smokey with little Nick-knacks everywhere. And the food was great as well. Had the pork plate and a chicken plate and they were both very tasty and well done. Bread on the tables was an old school touch but when she brought us the jug of sweet tea for refills, that sealed the deal. Great little BBQ place that tastes like old South. We split the combo platter for $14. It had so much food the 2 of us couldn't eat everything. Half a barbecue chicken, about 1/2 pound of pork, a huge bowl of stew, and a mound of slaw. And loaves of white bread on the tables. We liked everything but the stew. The chicken was the best. BBQ sauces are Carolina style vinegar based and were tasty. Great grabbing a piece of bread and loading it up with slaw, pork & sauce and folding it over to eat. I would recommend stopping in, looking at the rustic exterior, and going somewhere else to eat. There's rustic charm, and then there's never, ever, cleaning. The place is pretty filthy. There was a loaf of bread on each table. When I picked mine up to move it out of the way, there was mold growing under it. I had the ribs, fries, and cole slaw. I don't really like cole slaw, so I won't comment on it. The fries were fresh, but tasted like the oil was very old. The ketchup bottle was filthy as well. If you'll hand me a disgusting bottle, it makes me nervous about what it might look like in the kitchen. The ribs were tender...but cold. The only reason to go here is for the nostalgia of Sweet Home Alabama. I believe that is the only reason this place is still in operation. We were camping nearby and love stopping at "hole in the wall" type places. I can safely say that I felt like I was eating at a man's hunting camp. The cook was ladling out bbq, Brunswick stew and cole slaw. I would equate my bbq sandwich to sloppy joes but with pork instead. My husband enjoyed his pork plate but I just wanted to clean everything. It was the most unique place I have ever eaten but I will never return. Quaint little back roads stop for a warm meal. The decor inside is what you might expect and then some, decked out with taxidermy covering the walls from floor to ceiling. Places like this thrive on their regular crowd and tend to cater more to them than two random travelers; and the service and attitude of the counter clerk proves this point. Nonetheless, the food was tasty. BBQ Rib plate comes with Brunswick Stew and Coleslaw (with diced pickles ) and you can tell it has been cooked low and slow with care. Spanky, the yard dog/security system is there to greet anyone who walks up, as long as they come to him and give him pets. We were on a Georgia State Park reconnaissance tour recently. We were heading toward Hamburg State Park when I saw a weathered sign advertising Heavy's BBQ, stating that scenes from the movie "Sweet Home Alabama" were filmed there. It's a cute movie. We figured that since it was Sunday they'd be closed. Not so. So, we stopped for some grub. This place is fascinating. Vintage and antique vehicles and farm tools are all around the outside. Inside, you can't stop looking at all the decor, especially the huge gator with the huge bass in its mouth. You order at the front counter and are handed a tray with your food. We chose the separate dining room with the big, warming fireplace. It was beautiful on a cold rainy Sunday afternoon. ...What was that? Sunday????" Yes, SUNDAY when most bbq places are closed. The dining room is also a taxidermy showcase with lots of buck heads, a bear, and so on. Some find it off putting, but we thought it added to the atmosphere with the big handmade wooden tables and the dark wooden paneling. We loved it. It's obvious the patrons are locals. The lady behind the counter asked about family members and such. Some came in in their church clothes for takeout while small groups gathered in the dining room. And the food itself is something else. We both ordered a bbq sandwich and were amazed at the quantity of pork on each. I'd say it was easily 1/2 a pound. Now, I know people are very discerning about sauce, and it's usually based on the region where they live. This old girl is originally from NC, so I am familiar with and like Eastern NC tangy, tart vinegar-based sauce. If you like the stuff from SC, Memphis, Kansas City, this may not be your jam. But you can get a burger or a hotdog. We didn't try them so I can't comment, but I'd wager they're good. We each got slaw as a side, thinking we'd get a cup at best. No! You get a HUGE soup bowl of the stuff. We liked it: fresh with chopped pickles thrown in. One order would easily have been enough for us. And for less than $20, we had way more food than we could eat or expected. This place has been around since 1941, and that says something, too. We decided that if we camp at Mistletoe or Hamburg state parks, we are going to hit Heavy's for some good grub. read more

This is the best barbecue restaurant I've ever eaten in. Four and a half stars on Google, and that's about right. I have had barbecue as good as Heavy's before, but only from a hole-in-the-wall roadside joint in Huntsville, Alabama, never from a sit-down place. Only here have I gotten delicious barbecue, real Southern atmosphere, peace and quiet, AND good service. Name me one other barbecue place, anywhere, where a customer can expect and receive all those things. Seriously. Hollywood came to the South looking for the perfect Southern town, and the perfect watering hole, to put in the movie "Sweet Home Alabama." Apparently no place in Alabama qualified, but that didn't matter, because they found Crawfordville, and they found Heavy's. Crawfordville is beautiful. Easily one of the most charming little cities in Georgia. Crawfordville and Taliaferro County are like stepping back in time. But about the food. Top-notch cole slaw. Best barbecued pork I've ever had. Sauces that should be bottled and never will be. You order tea and they give you a pitcher of tea. Every table has a fresh loaf of Sunbeam. This has come to define the barbecue experience for me. I've never seen anyone there--other than my family and me--who isn't a local. I would say more but this is one of those places you don't really want to review on the internet. You want it to succeed, but you don't want it to change due to a crush of new diners. 3 stars equals "A-OK" according to yelp, and that's pretty much how I would describe this "legendary" BBQ joint that is located roughly between nowhere and the boonies. The meat was a bit mushy with not much smoke flavor, and very vinagrey. This is North Carolina 'que (and sauce) folks, so if you like your pork sweet and savory, don't stop for the meat. However, do stop to take a look at the "museum" which is basically a bunch of old restored cars, tractors, and buggies from the 1850s to the present. And a 'que joint cannot be judged by meat alone. I thought their Brunswick stew was really good, and their coleslaw was not too mayonnaise-y and definitely fresh. The pecan and sweet potato pies were delicious with a nice homemade crust, but I wish they hadn't been refrigerated to an ice block status. In summation, if you're passing by and need a bite and place to stretch your legs, check it out (but keep in mind it's only open Fri-Sun). But I don't think it's worth a special trip. read more

Heavy's is just over a mile off I20 between Atlanta and Augusta Ga near Crawfordville Ga. If you love "joints" you need to go even though the BBQ is just average. The bar scene's from the movie Sweet Home Alabama were filmed here and the inside and outside of the place are like a museum of "Southern." There is an antique Coke delivery truck and all kinds of other neat stuff outside. Inside there are more mounted animal parts than you can count. The day we visited was the middle of hunting season and most of the customers were taking a break from trying to get their own animal parts to mount. The seating is basically picnic tables with pitchers of sweet tea and a loaf of white bread on each table. The Menu is pulled pork, ribs, hamburgers and wings. A local had told us that the hamburgers and wings were the best things on the menu - we should have listened but, being BBQ fanatics we ordered the pork. It had a nice flavor, slightly smokey, was moist with a good mix of outside pieces. The problem was it was cold. Cold like it had been cooked days ago (the cooker wasn't smoking on this day) and kept in the refrigerator. The sauce (only one choice) was Carolina style vinegar based - not my personal preference but good for that type sauce. I had french fries (just average) and Cole slaw. Cole slaw wasn't overloaded with dressing but had too much pickle relish for my taste. Bottom line - definitely go if you get anywhere near this part of Georgia - but go for the atmosphere, not the BBQ. read more

The decor was definately interesting and definately someplace we still talk about. I was completely taken by it and read up on it. When we walked in the staff appeared to be upset that we were there. Very unfriendly. Thought about leaving. Now wished we had. We ordered a pork plates and a rib plate. The pork was gross! Way to much vinegar. The Brunswick stew was a watery mushy mess(looked like baby food). Tasted like there was ketchup in it. The slaw was large chunks of cabbage with cut up chunks of sweet pickles. Husband got the ribs and enjoyed them. The only thing my child ate was the white laid bread. The sweet tea had very little tea to the sugar. The inside is a run down nasty building. It could use a good scrubbing. There is bar soap in bathroom that looked like it had been there for years! That was the only soap to use. Thank goodness I carry hand sanitizer. When you pull up to Heavy's, you'll notice the collections of tractors and whatnot outside. There may be a voice in your head that says "This is a tourist trap". Go with that voice. My wife and I had pork plates. These consist of shredded pork, brunswick stew, and slaw. i can't speak for the slaw personally, but my wife thought it was mediocre, but the best thing they served. In my opinion, the BBQ was very mediocre with no smoke at all. It was as if they had cooked it in a crock pot. It was finely shredded and all one color, but I saw nothing that looked like outside meat. The brunswick stew was terrible- and I've eaten some pretty bad brunswick stew from other restaurants with a smile before. On the bright side, the iced tea was good, and the white bread on the table was fresh. My wife says: I thought the meat was bad. It had many fatty bits, and was extremely watery. There's no doubt that this meat had recently been cooked in a pot on a stove or a crock pot- there's just no smoke there at all. The brunswick stew was bad. The decor is a poor man's version of Ripley's Believe It Or Not. If they spent half of the time they spent on their decor working on their food, it'd be a decent place to eat. But after our experience there... even though there's really nowhere else in Crawfordville to eat, you're better off driving farther down the road to get something else better. read more

Even if you're not too heavy (sorry, I couldn't resist) into BBQ, you'll have a hard time resisting a stop, as the exterior of Heavy's building begs further exploration. Warning: this place has a lot of dead stuffed animals; I've never seen so many in one place before. I really liked this place. The Brunswick Stew, which I still don't know what it is, was really good. The ribs effortlessly came off of the bone, the coleslaw... one of the best that I have had. The dining room was quite an experience and worth the visit just on that alone. Next time I am in this area I will definitely give Heavy's BBQ a visit. If you like vinegar-based BBQ, this is a great out of the way place to eat. No ribs available when we were there, but food was quite good and enjoyed the artifacts scattered everywhere.
