This review is for their most excellent rehab hospital. As an affiliate with Harvard Medical School, they have the latest high tech physical therapy equipment with knowledgeable physical therapists. My mother received PT twice a day. The food is excellent. Not your usual crummy hospital food. They serve lox, matzah ball soup, roast chicken, and more tasty goodies. Try and get a single room if you can. Located on Centre Street in Roslindale, part of Boston, they are down the street from Faulkner Hospital, on the other side of the street. My elderly mom came here from the Brigham after discharge for a broken leg. She stayed a week before she had to back into the hospital for health complications. The staff is nice but they are understaffed. I give them one star for the constant, overwhelming urine stench throughout the facility and the sticky floors in the patient rooms. My Dad was there for 2 months after a stroke the staff and everyone there was wonderful. My Dad Rico got very good care there. The PT, OT, Speech, were the best he had gained lots of mobility after all the work they did with him. I have to say they were wonderful and really know what they doing. Then he got into the long term and it was a total nightmare. I went in to see him he was crying he said one of the aids changed his depends but the whole bed and his night cloths were soaked she said I'll be right back. An hour went by he rang the bell she came bombing in saying I told you I'll be right back now you'll sit in it. 6 hours later she changed him. I was bullshit. I went in there like a mental person. Spoke to the head of the nurses. He said oh that wouldn't happen. I said listen my Dad has his mind. The next day went there he showed me what girl it was they obviously did nothing to her so I went up to her and said listen you had my dad the other night don't you ever leave him for 6 hours in urine. She said you white bitch I said oh really I will rip your f....n eyes out of your head and shove the hair so far up your ass if you treat my Dad like that again. So they told me I wasn't allowed to go to see my dad there anymore. Something is wrong with this situation she was wrong and I get punished. I couldn't disagree more with the previous reviewers. My experiences with Hebrew SeniorLife have been in direct contradiction. Twenty years ago, my grandfather was in their rehab and nursing wings. His life was shortened as a result of the abuse he suffered. I have since seen, with the elderly parents of friends, more examples of the pattern of abuse, neglect and overall incompetence that characterizes the organization. HSL is an extremely affluent and well-endowed nonprofit, and its management consists entirely of career bureaucrats who do little more than sit around collecting inflated salaries and waiting for their generous retirement packages to kick in. In recent years, due to disability, I have tragically found myself a resident in one of Hebrew SeniorLife's senior/disabled apartment buildings. They have been the most bitter and miserable years of my life. I have also been subjected to a program of apathy and abuse, and my health has suffered dramatically as a result. My father was transported here after a 3 week stay at Beth Israel. He had a bone infection and, as a result, was bed ridden. A few weeks in the bed lead to some muscle atrophy and as a result, my father had to come here to rebuild strength in his legs and back. The short of the long is: This place was great! They provided wonderful care for my father. They provide an hour each day of both Physical and Occupational Therapy. They pushed my father and encouraged him to become independent once again. A wonderful transition from the hospital, this place allowed for my dad to go to (partially stocked) kitchen to get juice and practice other skills he would need at home. It wasn't a burden to be here because the amenities for patients and their families are wonderful. One thing to note: If you're considering a private room, note that the bathroom is shared and only consists of a toilet. (We paid for a private room, but were unaware the bathroom was shared.) The staff here is wonderful and the nurses and aides are truly kind and caring people. I definitely recommend this facility! read more

My mother was at Hebrew Senior Life for roughly five years as she slowly deteriorated from Lewy Body Disease. She spent the first 2 1/2 years in the Roslindale facility and then the next 2 1/2 years in what was then the Dedham facility, in both cases, in skilled nursing units. Having just watched the PBS Frontline expose of Emeritus, a national chain of assisted and skilled nursing facilities (see http://video.pbs.org/video/2365054620/?utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=pbsofficial&utm_campaign=froncovefullprogram ), I felt compelled to publicly give accolades to Hebrew Senior Life. The care that my mother received over the course of five years at Hebrew Senior Life was extraordinary. First, the people that they hired really cared about the residents. There were very few employees there who seemed to be there merely to collect a paycheck. They often went the extra step for a resident, whatever that may have called for. Second, the employees were very well trained. My mother's disease resulted in a certain form of dementia that could come and go day by day; it would hijack my mother's brain one day and then return it to her the next. It was the employees who would call me to tell me that my mother was having a lucid day and that I might want to come over that day. The employees understood the diseases and symptomatology of the diseases of all the residents for whom they were providing care, and they were empathetic in most cases, even when it was the resident engaged in challenging behavior. Third, the facility was kept very clean. In spite of my mother being on a dementia unit, you never smelled urine, you never smelled anything but what was being served for the next meal. That was quite a feat. Fourth, there were constant activities for anyone who could participate in any way. Children would come over with some frequency from the nearby school. Vocalists, instrumentalists, and others would come so that there was something happening on most weekday days. We could have paid for any skilled nursing facility. When my father had a massive stroke, we had him in one expensive facility (what was then Avery in Needham, Golden Living Center - Healthwood) after another - and they were terrible. I wish only that I had placed him in Hebrew Senior Life while he was still alive. I do really believe that you can feel you are making an excellent choice if you place a relative who needs this type of care in Hebrew Senior Life. read more

My dear mother had been living with Dementia for the last few years of her life and when her condition worsen, we, the family decided it would be a good idea to get her into a Long Term Care Facility where she would be well taken care of and we could visit her frequently. We decided to get her into the Hebrew Senior Life since it was local to us and thus, decided to submit an application about a year ago. Upon not hearing anything back from Monica Jardin, the admissions coordinator, I decided to contact her on a few occasions about the status of my mother's application and I was always told that she was on the list waiting for a room to be available. My mom got sicker and sicker and very sadly just recently passed away and no one at the Hebrew Senior Life has ever contacted me again about my mom's admission! Come to find out, this organization tends to give first class attention only to patients who are financially well off but since that was not my mom's case and she didn't even have any real estate on her name she was NEVER considered for admission and was just left to the side and we were all ignored! This is one of the most greedy money hungry organizations I have ever come in contact with and I find it very sad that they base their patients' admissions on their financial status! read more

Both in patient Rehab and out patient Physical Therapy experiences were wonderful. I was in patient twice following replacement surgeries. The care was wonderful. Out patient physical therapy was outstanding. They were caring and professional. We are blessed to have such a great facility in our neighborhood. read more

I totally agree with Roberta C's stellar review regarding Hebrew Seniorlife/Roslindale. My husband was recently there after a stroke, and the care he received was superb. He had previously been in other re-habs, and this was by far the best. It is extremely clean, and the staff was very knowledgeable and compassionate. Medically, my husband's case was extremely complicated, and he did pass away at the facility. I cannot begin to express how wonderful the staff treated him and our whole family; incredible! I don't understand why other facilities cannot come up to Hebrew's high standards; every patient/family deserves the BEST! read more

My mother had a cardiac arrest within hours of arriving at Hebrew Matthew. She left Beth Israel breathing on her own. When we arrived in the ambulance it was short staffed and very disorganized. We were told by one of her nurses they did not like to take patients on the weekends due short staffing. We were very nervous and everyone acted out of sorts. Within hours my mom suffered a cardiac arrest and was placed in the emergency room. She went into a coma and was given less than a six percent chance to survive and we had to let her go. The director of Hebrew Matthew wrote me letter saying he would investigate the situation and lack of staff. I never heard back. I have called him and still have not heard back. It has been months and no answer from the director. This was a terrible situation and painful. To see your mom survive and smile at you and hours later to know she was not being watched or hooked up to the right machines and suffered at the hands of poor care is devastating. Please think twice on bringing your parent or loved ones to this facility. read more
