I went here with a Groupon. My girlfriend and I ordered a slab of baby back ribs, a pulled pork sandwich, french fries, baked beans, mac and cheese, red beans and rice, and peach cobler. The only thing that was decent were the ribs and french fries, but nothing to write home about. The pulled pork sandwich was a little dry. The baked beans did not have a lot of beans and consisted mostly of liquid. The mac and cheese tasted microwaved and pasty while being hot on the outside and luke-warm in the middle. The red beans and rice side was very similiar to soup with the consistency that it exhibited. I don't really care to slurp my rice and beans down if you know what I mean. Here's the kicker though, the peach cobler was no better. I thought cobbler was suppose to resemble something that more closely looked like pie. This was not even close. It looked like snot served in a bowl. I kid you not, it looked like crusty pieces of matter floating around in egg whites. I don't get why this place serves some of the sides that it does. A lot of them really aren't edible and vaguely represent what you would expect to get anywhere else. Not much else can be said about this place. read more

By far the worst BBQ I've had possibly ever in my life. The mac 'n cheese was tolerable. Sort of. I had a Groupon and tried it but, to be honest, if someone gave it to me for free I still wouldn't eat it at this point. Update: In an effort to be more constructive, the ribs were dry and the meat was somewhat tough/seemed old, the sauce manages to be bland and the wrong kind of spicy at the same time (and I LOVE spice, in general), the mac n' cheese was basically yellow mush with no flavor and zero texture/firmness, the coleslaw was the best thing in that it tasted nearly as good as fast food coleslaw normally does. read more

A-OK BBQ for take-out. The pulled pork and hot links are better than the ribs and rib tips. I haven't like any of the sides, and I've tried their regular fries (which look and taste like the frozen fries that come in 5+ pound bags in the grocery store freezer aisle), mac and cheese (Velveeta to the max), baked beans (very sweet), and cole slaw (bland). If you're driving here, the location and limited street parking make it a gamble whether or not you'll have to idle in a no-parking zone to get your food. read more

I went last night, I asked for the middle pieces of the rib no hot link but extra chicken wings with my mutt meal. The young lady still gave me a link and the hard end of the rid tips. The fries were old and hard and the smoked chicken was super dry. I phoned to tell Yoli at Hecky's how awful my experience was this time, she didn't even apologize. If it wasn't an inconvenience for me to take my 6 year old back out in the cold I would have taken that food back. Instead of Yoli rectifying the bad experience she wanted to argue about how the fries had just come out. So I get an e-mail coupon that Hecky's sent me for ribs for $10. I drive from Lincolnwood to buy them and when I present the coupon, I am told that they are out of ribs but you have the chicken wings that are also on the coupon. How does a rib place run out of ribs and why are they still open if they have no ribs. I get home and place an order for three slabs of ribs on the phone. They tell me they will be ready in 15 minutes. So either they are pulling a bait and switch, or they didn't want to serve me because I am White. Either way, they just lost a 25 year customer! I took them home-- cut up some spring onion on top-- put some vinegar and hot sauce on top -. -- and closed my eyes-- and thought my grandmother had come back from the dead. The Cole slaw was fresh-- cold and delicious. I have to say this. Are you tired of catfish that has no flavor -- guess why? They are farm raised-- where they feed them genetically modified corn. EXCUSE ME?! If you want catfish that TASTES like catfish-- serious greens-- delicious-- FRESH Cole slaw, and pleasant, EFFICIENT, curbside service-- GO BACK TO HECKYS. Groupon in hand, my friend and I recently visited Hecky's for what I had promised him would be the great bar-b-que of my childhood memories. Instead, what we got was $20 of fatty, distasteful rib tips and some mediocre maccaroni and cheese. We both were thoroughly disappointed, unless my memory failed me, I was thankful that I only spent $10 on the Groupon. It would be highly unlikely that I would return. This was a tough review to write and I am posting it in the hope that Hecky's will figure out a better way. I ordered some BBQ chicken and a slab of ribs on New Years Eve for the teens that were staying home that night. It came quickly and the food was OK but the bill for this rather underwhelming single bag of food (including a modest tip for the driver) was right about FORTY DOLLARS! Two hours later I was dining like a queen at a fabulous restaurant in the city for the same amount of money - silly comparison, but a way of pointing out how greedy Hecky's has gotten. The "slab" of ribs fed one teen boy - that's all - and cost 22.00 with tip. The chicken was overcooked and was not even close to being a 'half a chicken'. Great BBQ! We ordered the rib tips and hot links and both were awesome. The hot links were nice and spicy and rib tips very tasty. They give you a ton of food including a bunch of fries. The only thing I would change about my order for next time is that the hot BBQ sauce is really really HOT!! My nose was running so much when eating and my husband and I ate in silence because we were both suffering from the heat, but it was still good! Just a heads up if you're not looking for crazy hot. So the employees are nice enough and it smells good in there. This is totally personal preference but I think the sauce really ruined my lunch. It was my first time in there and they asked me if I wanted my food sauced and I said yes but it was not what I was expecting. It tastes like ketchup and vinegar mixed together and did not have the sweet smokey complexity I was hoping for. The ribs tasted as if they were bought at jewel or Dominick's. disappointment washed over us.. Well today,I really wanted to drive south to Uncle John's for his delectable juicy smoke tinged ribs. But it started to rain. Took a chance and headed your way.. My nose scanned the air for that porky smoke,my eyes surveyed the lobby in hopes that the crowds lined up would certify what my heart wanted so. But it was not to be. I ordered catfish. It's a frozen breaded thing fried too long ,too hard. No catfish flavor. I ordered the ribs naked with sauce on the side based on another customers complaint about the sauce. The tips were meaty,with a good proportion of fat. The sauce does not have a pleasant taste at all. I can't put my finger on it. I just know it shouldn't go on the BBQ. But this meat was not BBQ. The BBQ was nothing to write home about, it had been made in the morning and by the time it was ready at 6pm it was dry and tough. The service was good but of course on a carry out it is hard to mess up, although they did commit the cardinal sin of forgetting the BBQ sauce (that was asked for on the side), not one packet in the whole bag. Barbeque turkey leg?!?! It seemed crazy so I had to try it. Hecky's has lots of good reviews about their ribs, so I want to focus on the almost unknown specialty: the barbeque turkey leg. It is one massive turkey leg, much bigger than anything I've seen at Thanksgiving. It's smoked, just like the ribs, and covered in the same delicious barbeque sauce, which makes for messy eating, but with a knife and fork, you can manage. It's messy, but well worth it. read more

My husband bought this home and it was not good to me at all. I now remember why I never ate here more than once when I was a student at Northwestern. I had a half slab and the meat was not tender at all. I only ate two of the bones because that was all that I could tolerate. The sauce was a bit too tangy for me. My husband had rib tips which were a little better. He also had the baked beans which were not that great either. I like tender ribs and these unfortunately were not. Been coming here for years. Rib tips are very good quality, meaty and generous. Sauce is very good. The extra large is enough for 2 hungry people. I prefer the hot sauce. Its not overpowering but still has a kick. Prices can be a little high but it is worth it. Fries are very good as well. Parking at peak hours is challenging as it is mostly street which is why I knocked off a star. Smells wonderful inside. read more

What a waste. Just got delivered some Hecky's since a friend recommended I try and was totally disappointed. The chicken is raw, the hot link is spoiled,(smells really bad) and basically raw, (when i picked it up, it collapsed in my hand) and the rib tips I was too scared to try. Now drown that with the sauce, and you couldn't taste it if you wanted to. Too much sauce, guess they were trying to disguise the spoiled and raw meat. Didn't feel the need to call and complain because I'm sure they knew when they prepared it, and just didn't give a d. I had the BBQ pulled pork sandwich and it was okay. I also ordered the mac and cheese and the size of the portion was ridiculous for $4.50, it's about a third of the size it should be for that price.
