Another job well done they are very tender and just the way I like it.

I ordered a small tip. The tips were cut perfectly as I always ask the guy behind the counter to do. I got home and ate my tips and found they were super tender and delicious. I love hickeys tips.

I was greeted by a really nice person behind the counter. They quickly took my order of small rib tips and small fries. They have a super small patio for 2 people. There isn't a dining area so once, I received my order and I took it home. (15 minutes drive). It was plenty warm when I got home. As I sat down to eat the small is actual filling. The tips were meaty and tender, I asked for the hot bbq sauce, even though it not super spicy, it has some nice heat. The fries were good dipped in the bbq sauce. I wish the bbq sauce was spicier.

Hecky's was a phenomenal place to choose for our Black History Month celebration! From beginning to end Cheryl was a gem to work with! She was able to provide recommendations and help me with a menu! The food arrived timely, it's was enough for the staff and they all wanted seconds! Thank you Heckys for providing such a great experience! Look forward to working with Cheryl in the future! Brandi - Encompass Health

    Bone dry chalky corn muffin

I love the idea of a place like this that's been in business so long and it's an institution. But there were a few glaring things that irked me. The brisket was very nicely crusted. The fatty side was much better than the underside but without adding sauce, it was quite dry. The sauce was delicious. Both regular and spicy versions were excellent. Slaw was good. Didn't taste homemade but worth it. No pickles available. The corn muffins- OMG- DON'T order these! Dry and like powder. These were beyond disappointing and we threw them away after one bite. I almost couldn't swallow the small piece even with butter on it. Sad. Chicken hot link- mostly hot, not flavorful. Very dry. I'd take a pass. I've had the pork ones and they are good. I wanted beef ribs but not available today. Pork ribs must be the thing here but my wife doesn't eat them so we had other things. Next time I'll eat pork ribs in the car. Although this is an icon in the Chicago area, I really think it's my last visit.

Half Slab of St. Louis Ribs
    Gino W.

I had driven to Evanston to try a restaurant only to find out that it was closed permanently. Plan B also turned out to be closed permanently. So, I Googled for other options, and Hecky's was it since I was nearby. I ordered a half slab of St. Louis ribs, greens, potato salad, baked beans, and peach cobbler. The flavor of the ribs was good enough, but they were not quite tender. So I did a low heat, long bake in the oven. Meat fell off the bone. If I go back, I'd request to have the sauce on the side. The greens tasted like no seasoning had been added. I diced a small onion, cut up a garlic clove, and cut up a habanero to put in with some bouillon and pepper, after which I did a slow cook stovetop. That kicked them up. The potato salad and the baked beans were right on. I ordered everything on a Saturday and ate it the next day after letting the seasoning set in the greens. As to the peach cobbler, there was no flavor. I worked in a little cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg and then baked on low for a few minutes to heat it while keeping the juice. I added a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream, and that seemed to work. I think my timing may have been off. It happens. Perhaps the outcome will be differently whenever the next time I go for an order.

    Any gluten free options?

Things like the cole slaw and greens would obviously be gluten free, but I would recommend you calling the restaurant and asking. They are very friendly and will be happy to answer any questions you have.

Considering I am from Texas, I will admit I can be a little particular when it comes to BBQ, but this was pretty good BBQ, especially this far north. The smoked meats were flavorful, tender, and had a good slow-cooked taste. The brisket, pulled pork, rib tips, and sausage all brought something different, and the variety made the meal feel like a true sampler experience. The sides were just as good. The mac and cheese, red beans and rice, collard greens, apple slaw, and cornbread all had that comforting soul food feel and paired really well with the BBQ. Overall, Soul & Smoke delivered on both the smoke and the soul. Great flavor, generous portions, and a satisfying meal from start to finish. Definitely a spot worth visiting if you are in Evanston and looking for good BBQ and soul food.

I also ordered a side of cole slaw and red beans and rice. The guy behind the counter said they don't have mild sauce for the chicken. Then he told me the sauces that they had, so I said no sauce. I guess he was also relating the sauces for the rib tips when I already said no sauce. They cook the chicken fresh and may take a little time. When I got home, I was ready to dig in but I found out the sauce discussion left my rib tips with no bbq sauce. I called them and a nice lady told me I would be taken care of the next time, I visit. Thank goodness, I had bbq sauce. But I tried the tips without sauce and they were seasoned well. I put on some Sweet Baby Rays on them and dang it was good. The tips were tender and a lot of meat. The chicken was so good that I wish I would have gotten more. It was seasoned and crunchy. The Cole slaw was okay and the red beans and rice was good, just which it had a little more pot liquor. I would definitely go back. Also the prices that they have online is really outdated.

I ordered the jerk chicken quesadillas which came with a standard red salsa, an attempt at crema (which seemed more like watered down sour cream) and a more spicy hot green salsa. I paid $8.99 and it was well worth it regardless of the cream. The quesadillas were a nice mix of chicken, beans, roasted corn and rice. I did not see lettuce and tomato as the menu stated. As an experienced diner I look for appropriate portions and this was perfect. The building is owned and ran by the City of Evanston. There is plenty of seating and rotating art exhibits to enjoy with the option to rent event space. I imagine such great things for this building...I hope they come to fruition. Why 3 stars? Simply put cleanliness, the front door was greasy when I opened it and the counter had some type of fluid smeared on it (soda perhaps). There is outdoor seating under a pergola lined with semi-private planters, while the inside features a bar, high tops, low tops, and large booths. The music was upbeat, giving the space an elevated lounge vibe that pairs really well with the upholstered booths and vintage industrial design. I ordered the Wolf Burger, which is a whopping three-patty burger. That first bite was juicy and pure bliss--a total explosion of great flavors. It was a little messy (like all burgers with an egg), but the extra liquid was perfect for balancing the density of such a meaty burger. The soft bun soaked in a lot of those juices with each bite, intensifying the flavor as I ate more. The fries were thin and on the greasier side--not my personal favorite, but they worked alright as a vehicle for the sauce. Speaking of which, the chili aioli served with the fries was fantastic. We also got the mac and cheese, which hit a great balance between rich and creamy without feeling excessively wet. The boat it came in was a bit small, making it a little messy to scoop out with the serving spoon, but it was soooo good. Overall, it is absolutely a fantastic neighborhood place for comfort food and drinks with friends in a great space!
