Smaller hardware stores are convenient if you live closeby, but they aren't usually worth the trip if there's a Depot closer, or if you need a plumbing supply store or something, or I you might want to return something easily. GNH is no different. It's closer than Depot or Lowe's by about twenty minutes for me, so I pop in when I need a couple small things, some Benjamin Moore paint, or I'm already going to Bryant's. They have a nice selection of mudding/taping/plaster tools and a surprisingly full selection of power tools. The plumbing and electrical sections are pretty basic. They have almost no duct work. And they weren't able to special order a USG plaster from their distributor for some reason, though the ordering guy was perfectly nice about it. But in general, the employees aren't super friendly unless you're a local and a regular.

And forget about calling to see if they have an item. They'll act like you're a big inconvenience, say yes over the phone and still won't have the item when you get there. So for once, don't shop local. Go to a big box store, get a better price, better selection and better service. Many of the people at Lowes and Home Depot remember me and are always so nice!

About 45 minutes to an hour were spent browsing through the incredible old/new - new/old stock (however it's referred to) and we had the pleasure of talking with Dennis, who answered whatever questions I had while gently rebuffing my attempts to buy things that were not for sale. I did however purchase a nice old file in new condition as well as an old, ornate drill bit holder which will proudly be displayed in my home shop. This store has a hazy, relaxed, out-of-time feel to it and is as relaxing and comfortable as any familiar place where one wants to get lost for a while and forget the loud, impersonal modern world in which we find ourselves immersed far too often.

This Houst & Son on Tinker St in the heart of Woodstock is independently owned- falling within the fold of the True Value brand. We've relied on these folks for years especially when we've stayed at a local B&B with access to their grill then come here for a bag of charcoal briquettes. We'll still get those- but now as things have changed for us, we're getting kitchen items, cast-iron skillets, etc to use on weekends when we're in town. The right side of Houst is dedicated to kitchen items such as cutlery, cleaning supplies, pots+pans, serving spoons, welcome mats+other outdoor items. The left side has painting supplies, plumbing products and other DIY projects that need seeing quickly. For bigger home improvements, ask. Price? It's Woodstock. I'm not driving out of my way to save a a few dollars. But, these folks have a rewards system which you can accumulate and use for future purchases. As far as service, it's unbeatable.
